We study the statistics of the work distribution $P(w)$ in a $d-$dimensional closed quantum system with linear dimension $L$ subjected to a periodic drive with frequency $ω_0$. We show that after an integer number of periods of the drive, the corresponding rate function $I(w)= -\ln[P(w)]/L^d$ satisfies an universal lower bound $I(0)\ge n_d$ and has a zero at $w=Q$, where $n_d$ and $Q$ are the defect density and residual energy generated during the drive. We supplement our results by calculating $I(w)$ for a class of $d$-dimensional integrable models and show that it has oscillatory dependence on $ω_0$ originating from Stuckelberg interference generated during multiple passage through intermediate quantum critical points or regions during the drive. We suggest experiments to test our theory.
We introduce a model for a periodically driven electron pump that sequentially interact with an arbitrary number of heat and particle reservoirs. Exact expressions for the thermodynamic fluxes, such as entropy production and particle flows are derived arbitrarily far from equilibrium. We use the present model to perform a comparative study of thermodynamic uncertainty relations that are valid for systems with time-periodic driving.
Quantum interference lies at the heart of several surprising equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena in many-body Physics. Here we discuss two recently explored non-equilibrium scenarios where external periodic drive applied to closed (i.e., not attached to any external bath) quantum many-body systems have apparently opposite effects in respective cases. In one case it freezes/localizes a disorder free system dynamically, while in the other it delocalizes a disordered many-body localized system, and quantum interference is responsible for both the effects. We review these in the perspective …
We derive the fluctuation theorem for a stochastic and periodically driven system coupled to two reservoirs with the aid of a master equation. We write down the cumulant generating functions for both the current and entropy production in closed compact forms so as to treat the adiabatic and nonadiabatic contributions systematically. We derive the fluctuation theorem by taking into account the time reversal symmetry and the property that the instantaneous currents flowing into the left and the right reservoir are not equal. It is found that the fluctuation-dissipation relation derived from the …
We study Markovian stochastic motion on a graph with finite number of nodes and adiabatically periodically driven transition rates. We show that, under general conditions, the quantized currents that appear at low temperatures are a manifestation of topological invariants in the counting statistics of currents. This observation provides an approach for classification of topological properties of the counting statistics, as well as for extensions of the phenomenon of the robust quantization of currents at low temperatures to the properties of the counting statistics which persist to finite temp…
We address the issue of the validity of linear response theory for a closed quantum system subject to a periodic external driving. Linear response theory (LRT) predicts energy absorption at frequencies of the external driving where the imaginary part of the appropriate response function is different from zero. Here we show that, for a fairly general non-linear many-body system on a lattice subject to an extensive perturbation, this approximation should be expected to be valid only up to a time $t^*$ depending on the strength of the driving, beyond which the true coherent Schrödinger evolution …
We demonstrate that the counting statistics of currents in periodically driven ergodic stochastic systems can show sharp changes of some of its properties in response to continuous changes of the driving protocol. To describe this effect, we introduce a new topological phase factor in evolution of the moment generating function which is akin to the topological geometric phase in evolution of a periodically driven quantum mechanical system with time-reversal symmetry. This phase leads to the prediction of a sign change for the difference of the probabilities to find even and odd number particle…
Prethermalization refers to the transient phenomenon where a system thermalizes according to a Hamiltonian that is not the generator of its evolution. We provide here a rigorous framework for quantum spin systems where prethermalization is exhibited for very long times. First, we consider quantum spin systems under periodic driving at high frequency $ν$. We prove that up to a quasi-exponential time $τ_* \sim e^{c \fracν{\log^3 ν}}$, the system barely absorbs energy. Instead, there is an effective local Hamiltonian $\hat D$ that governs the time evolution up to $τ_*$, and hence this effective H…
Current fluctuations play an important role in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, and are a key object of interest in both theoretical studies and in practical applications. So far, most of the studies were devoted to the fluctuations in the time-averaged current -- the zero frequency Fourier component of the time dependent current. However, in many practical applications the fluctuations at other frequencies are of equal importance. Here we study the full frequency dependence of current statistics in periodically driven stochastic systems. First, we show a general method to calculate the …
In the thermodynamics of nanoscopic systems the relation between classical and quantum mechanical description is of particular importance. To scrutinize this correspondence we study an anharmonic oscillator driven by a periodic external force with slowly varying amplitude both classically and within the framework of quantum mechanics. The energy change of the oscillator induced by the driving is closely related to the probability distribution of work for the system. With the amplitude $λ(t)$ of the drive increasing from zero to a maximum $λ_{max}$ and then going back to zero again initial and …
We show that the correlation functions of a class of periodically driven integrable closed quantum systems approach their steady state value as $n^{-(α+1)/β}$, where $n$ is the number of drive cycles and $α$ and $β$ denote positive integers. We find that generically $β=2$ within a dynamical phase characterized by a fixed $α$; however, its value can change to $β=3$ or $β=4$ either at critical drive frequencies separating two dynamical phases or at special points within a phase. We show that such decays are realized in both driven Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) and one-dimensional (1D) transverse fi…
By means of a Floquet analysis, we study the quantum dynamics of a fully connected Lipkin-Ising ferromagnet in a periodically driven transverse field showing that thermalization in the steady state is intimately connected to properties of the $N\to \infty$ classical Hamiltonian dynamics. When the dynamics is ergodic, the Floquet spectrum obeys a Wigner-Dyson statistics and the system satisfies the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH): Independently of the initial state, local observables relax to the $T=\infty$ thermal value, and Floquet states are delocalized in the Hilbert space. On th…
We discuss activated escape from a metastable state of a system driven by a time-periodic force. We show that the escape probabilities can be changed very strongly even by a comparatively weak force. In a broad parameter range, the activation energy of escape depends linearly on the force amplitude. This dependence is described by the logarithmic susceptibility, which is analyzed theoretically and through analog and digital simulations. A closed-form explicit expression for the escape rate of an overdamped Brownian particle is presented and shown to be in quantitative agreement with the simula…
We experimentally study a periodically driven many-body localized system realized by interacting fermions in a one-dimensional quasi-disordered optical lattice. By preparing the system in a far-from-equilibrium state and monitoring the remains of an imprinted density pattern, we identify a localized phase at high drive frequencies and an ergodic phase at low ones. These two distinct phases are separated by a dynamical phase transition which depends on both the drive frequency and the drive strength. Our observations are quantitatively supported by numerical simulations and are directly connect…
In the present work we illustrate that classical but nonlinear systems may possess features reminiscent of quantum ones, such as memory, upon suitable external perturbation. As our prototypical example, we use the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in its vortex glass regime. We impose an external drive as a perturbation mimicking a quantum measurement protocol, with a given "measurement rate" (the rate of repetition of the drive) and "mixing rate" (characterized by the intensity of the drive). Using a variety of measures, we find that the system may or may not retain its coheren…
Extending notions of phase transitions to nonequilibrium realm is a fundamental problem for statistical mechanics. While it was discovered that critical transitions occur even for transient states before relaxation as the singularity of a dynamical version of free energy, their nature is yet to be elusive. Here, we show that spontaneous symmetry breaking can occur at a short-time regime and causes universal dynamical quantum phase transitions in periodically driven unitary dynamics. Unlike conventional phase transitions, the relevant symmetry is antiunitary: its breaking is accompanied by a ma…
Frustrated quantum $XXZ$ spin chains with the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) couplings are typically deterministic many-body systems exhibiting Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) spectral statistics. We investigate energy diffusion for these spin chains in the presence of a periodically oscillating magnetic field. Diffusion coefficients are found to obey the power law with respect to both the field strength and driving frequency with its power varying depending on the linear response and non-perturbative regimes. The widths of the linear response and the non-perturbative regimes depend on the str…
We analyze the dynamics of occupation probabilities for a certain type of design models by the use of two different methods. On the one hand we present some numerical calculations for two concrete interactions which point out that the occurrence of statistical dynamics depends on the interaction structure. Furthermore we show an analytical derivation for an infinite system that yields statistical behaviour for the average over the whole ensemble of interactions in the Van Hove-limit.
We investigate quantum corrections to the classical work characteristic function (CF) as a semiclassical approximation to the full quantum work CF. In addition to explicitly establishing the quantum-classical correspondence of the Feynman-Kac formula, we find that these quantum corrections must be in even powers of $\hbar$. Exact formulas of the lowest corrections ($\hbar^2$) are proposed, and their physical origins are clarified. We calculate the work CFs for a forced harmonic oscillator and a forced quartic oscillator respectively to illustrate our results.
Having established the fact that interacting classical kicked rotor systems exhibit long-lived prethermal phase with quasi-conserved average Hamiltonian before entering into chaotic heating regime, we use spatio-temporal fluctuation correlation of kinetic energy to probe the above dynamic phases. We remarkably find the diffusive transport of fluctuation in the prethermal regime reminding us the underlying hydrodynamic picture in a generalized Gibbs ensemble with a definite temperature that depends on the driving parameter and initial conditions. On the other hand, the heating regime, character…
Statistics of closed paths in two-dimensional systems, which just determines the interference quantum correction to conductivity and anomalous magnetoconductance, has been studied by computer simulation of a particle motion over the plane with randomly distributed scatters. Both ballistic and diffusion regimes have been considered. The results of simulation have been analyzed in the framework of diffusion approximation. They are used for calculation of the magnetic field dependence of magnetoconductance in the model 2D system. It is shown that the anomalous magnetoconductance can be in princip…
In this communication, the derivation of the Boltzmann-Gibbs and the Maxwellian distributions is presented from a geometrical point of view under the hypothesis of equiprobability. It is shown that both distributions can be obtained by working out the properties of the volume or the surface of the respective geometries delimited in phase space by an additive constraint. That is, the asymptotic equilibrium distributions in the thermodynamic limit are independent of considering open or closed homogeneous statistical systems.
Equilibrium theormodynamics is characterized by two fundamental ideas: thermalisation--that systems approach a late time thermal state; and phase structure--that thermal states exhibit singular changes as various parameters characterizing the system are changed. We summarise recent progress that has established generalizations of these ideas to periodically driven, or Floquet, closed quantum systems. This has resulted in the discovery of entirely new phases which exist only out of equilibrium, such as the $π$-spin glass or Floquet time crystal.
We demonstrate supersymmetry in the counting statistics of stochastic particle currents and use it to derive exact nonperturbative relations for the statistics of currents induced by arbitrarily fast time-dependent protocols.
As the dimensions of physical systems approach the nanoscale, the laws of thermodynamics must be reconsidered due to the increased importance of fluctuations and quantum effects. While the statistical mechanics of small classical systems is relatively well understood, the quantum case still poses challenges. Here we set up a formalism that allows to calculate the full probability distribution of energy exchanges between a periodically driven quantum system and a thermalized heat reservoir. The formalism combines Floquet theory with a generalized master equation approach. For a driven two-level…
We review selected advances in the theoretical understanding of complex quantum many-body systems with regard to emergent notions of quantum statistical mechanics. We cover topics such as equilibration and thermalisation in pure state statistical mechanics, the eigenstate thermalisation hypothesis, the equivalence of ensembles, non-equilibration dynamics following global and local quenches as well as ramps. We also address initial state independence, absence of thermalisation, and many-body localisation. We elucidate the role played by key concepts for these phenomena, such as Lieb-Robinson bo…
