All spaces are assumed to be separable and metrizable. Consider the following properties of a space $X$. (1) $X$ is Polish. (2) For every countable crowded $Q\subseteq X$ there exists a crowded $Q'\subseteq Q$ with compact closure. (3) Every closed subspace of $X$ is either scattered or it contains a homeomorphic copy of $2^ω$. (4) Every closed subspace of $X$ is a Baire space. While (4) is the well-known property of being completely Baire, properties (2) and (3) have been recently introduced by Kunen, Medini and Zdomskyy, who named them the Miller property and the Cantor-Bendixson property respectively. It turns out that the implications $(1)\rightarrow (2)\rightarrow (3)\rightarrow (4)$ hold for every space $X$. Furthermore, it follows from a classical result of Hurewicz that all these implications are equivalences if $X$ is coanalytic. Under the axiom of Projective Determinacy, this equivalence result extends to all projective spaces. We will complete the picture by giving a $\mathsf{ZFC}$ counterexample and a consistent definable counterexample of lowest possible complexity to the implication $(i)\leftarrow (i+1)$ for $i=1,2,3$. For one of these counterexamples we will need a classical theorem of Martin and Solovay, of which we give a new proof, based on a result of Baldwin and Beaudoin. Finally, using a method of Fischer and Friedman, we will investigate how changing the value of the continuum affects the definability of these counterexamples. Along the way, we will show that every uncountable completely Baire space has size continuum.
The purpose of this paper is to define for every Polish space $X$ a class of sets, the $EBP(X)$-sets or the extended Baire property sets, to work out many properties of the $EBP(X)$-sets and to show their usefulness in analysis. For example, a proper generalization of the Pettis Theorem is proved in this context that furnishes a new automatic continuity result for Polish groups. The name extended Baire property sets is reasonable since $EBP(X)$ contains the Baire property sets $BP(X)$ and it is consistent with ZFC that the containment is proper.
Quasi-Polish spaces were introduced by de Brecht as a possibly non-Hausdorff generalization of Polish spaces sharing many of their descriptive set-theoretic properties. We give a self-contained exposition of the basic theory of quasi-Polish spaces, based on their "logical" characterization as $\mathbfΠ^0_2$ subspaces of countable powers of Sierpinski space, with several new proofs emphasizing this point of view as well as making more extensive use of Baire category techniques.
W. Hurewicz proved that analytic Menger sets of reals are $σ$-compact and that co-analytic completely Baire sets of reals are completely metrizable. It is natural to try to generalize these theorems to projective sets. This has previously been accomplished by $V = L$ for projective counterexamples, and the Axiom of Projective Determinacy for positive results. For the first problem, the first author, S. Todorcevic, and S. Tokgöz have produced a finer analysis with much weaker axioms. We produce a similar analysis for the second problem, showing the two problems are essentially equivalent. We al…
A topological space is defined to be banalytic (resp. analytic) if it is the image of a Polish space under a Borel (resp. continuous) map. A regular topological space is analytic if and only if it is banalytic and cosmic. Each (regular) banalytic space has countable spread (and under PFA is hereditarily Lindelöf). Applying banalytic spaces to topological groups, we prove that for a Baire topological group $X$ the following conditions are equivalent: (1) $X$ is Polish, (2) $X$ is analytic, (3) $X$ is banalytic and cosmic, (4) $X$ is banalytic and has countable pseudocharacter. Under PFA the con…
For a Tychonoff space $X$ and a subspace $Y\subset\mathbb R$, we study Baire category properties of the space $C_{\downarrow F}(X,Y)$ of continuous functions from $X$ to $Y$, endowed with the Fell hypograph topology. We characterize pairs $X,Y$ for which the function space $C_{\downarrow F}(X,Y)$ is $\infty$-meager, meager, Baire, Choquet, strong Choquet, (almost) complete-metrizable or (almost) Polish.
The structure of the Wadge degrees on zero-dimensional spaces is very simple (almost well-ordered), but for many other natural non-zero-dimensional spaces (including the space of reals) this structure is much more complicated. We consider weaker notions of reducibility, including the so-called Δ^0_α-reductions, and try to find for various natural topological spaces X the least ordinal α_X such that for every α_X \leq β< ω_1 the degree-structure induced on X by the Δ^0_β-reductions is simple (i.e. similar to the Wadge hierarchy on the Baire space). We show that α_X \leq ω for every quasi-Polish…
We investigate the possibility of extension of fragmented functions from Lindelöf subspaces of completely regular spaces and find necessary and sufficient conditions on a fragmented Baire-one function to be extendable on any completely regular superspace
A fundamental result proved by Bourgain, Fremlin and Talagrand states that the space $B_1(M)$ of Baire one functions over a Polish space $M$ is an angelic space. Stegall extended this result by showing that the class $B_1(M,E)$ of Baire one functions valued in a normed space $E$ is angelic. These results motivate our study of various topological properties in the classes $B_α(X,G)$ of Baire-$α$ functions, where $α$ is a nonzero countable ordinal, $G$ is a metrizable non-precompact abelian group and $X$ is a $G$-Tychonoff first countable space. In particular, we show that (1) $B_α(X,G)$ is a $κ…
In this paper, we intend to show that under not too restrictive conditions, results much stronger than the one obtained earlier by Hejduk could be established in category bases.
Given a completely metrizable space $X$, let $\mathfrak{par}(X)$ denote the smallest possible size of a partition of $X$ into Polish spaces, and $\mathfrak{cov}(X)$ the smallest possible size of a covering of $X$ with Polish spaces. Observe that $\mathfrak{cov}(X) \leq \mathfrak{par}(X)$ for every $X$, because every partition of $X$ is also a covering. We prove it is consistent relative to a huge cardinal that the strict inequality $\mathfrak{cov}(X) < \mathfrak{par}(X)$ can hold for some completely metrizable space $X$. We also prove that using large cardinals is necessary for obtaining this …
The main result is the following. Let $f \colon X \rightarrow Y$ be a continuous mapping of a completely Baire space $X$ onto a hereditary weakly Preiss-Simon regular space $Y$ such that the image of every open subset of $X$ is a resolvable set in $Y$. Then $Y$ is completely Baire. The classical Hurewicz theorem about closed embedding of the space of rational numbers into metrizable spaces is generalized to weakly Preiss-Simon regular spaces.
We answer a question of O. Kalenda and J. Spurný and give an example of a completely regular hereditarily Baire space $X$ and a Baire-one function $f:X\to [0,1]$ which can not be extended to a Baire-one function on $βX$.

Recall that a Hausdorff space $X$ is said to be Namioka if for every compact (Hausdorff) space $Y$ and every metric space $Z$, every separately continuous function $f:X\times{Y}\rightarrow{Z}$ is continuous on $D\times{Y}$ for some dense $G_δ$ subset $D$ of $X$. It is well known that in the class of all metrizable spaces, Namioka and Baire spaces coincide (Saint-Raymond, 1983). Further it is known that every completely regular Namioka space is Baire and that every separable Baire space is Namioka (Saint-Raymond, 1983). In our paper we study spaces $X$, we call them weakly Namioka, for which th…
In this paper we investigate the action of Polish groups (not necessary abelian) on an uncountable Polish spaces. We consider two main situations. First, when the orbits given by group action are small and the second when the family of orbits are at most countable. We have found some subgroups which are not measurable with respect to a given $σ$-ideals on the group and the action on some subsets gives a completely nonmeasurable sets with respect to some $σ$-ideals with a Borel base on the Polish space. In most cases the general results are consistent with ZFC theory and are strictly connected …
We prove the following two results. 1. If $X$ is a completely regular space such that for every topological space $Y$ each separately continuous function $f:X\times Y\to\mathbb R$ is of the first Baire class, then every Lindelöf subspace of $X$ bijectively continuously maps onto a separable metrizable space. 2. If $X$ is a Baire space, $Y$ is a compact space and $f:X\times Y\to\mathbb R$ is a separately continuous function which is a Baire measurable function, then there exists a dense in $X$ $G_δ$-set $A$ such that $f$ is jointly continuous at every point of $A\times Y$ (this gives a positive…
We study $G_δ$ subspaces of continuous dcpos, which we call domain-complete spaces, and $G_δ$ subspaces of locally compact sober spaces, which we call LCS-complete spaces. Those include all locally compact sober spaces-in particular, all continuous dcpos-, all topologically complete spaces in the sense of Čech, and all quasi-Polish spaces-in particular, all Polish spaces. We show that LCS-complete spaces are sober, Wilker, compactly Choquet-complete, completely Baire, and $\odot$-consonant-in particular, consonant; that the countably-based LCS-complete (resp., domain-complete) spaces are the q…
A topological space $X$ is called Piotrowski if every quasicontinuous map $f:Z\to X$ from a Baire space $Z$ to $X$ has a continuity point. In this paper we survey known results on Piotrowski spaces and investigate the relation of Piotrowski spaces to strictly fragmentable, Stegall, and game determined spaces. Also we prove that a Piotrowski Tychonoff space $X$ contains a dense (completely) metrizable Baire subspace if and only if $X$ is Baire (Choquet).
We prove that, for every n, the topological space ω_n^ω (where ω_n has the discrete topology) can be partitioned into ω_n copies of the Baire space. Using this fact, the authors then prove two new theorems about completely ultrametrizable spaces. We say that Y is a condensation of X if there is a continuous bijection from X to Y. First, it is proved that the Baire space is a condensation of ω_n^ω if and only if it can be partitioned into ω_n Borel sets, and some consistency results are given regarding such partitions. It is also proved that it is consistent with ZFC that, for any n < ω, the co…
This paper deals with different concepts for characterizing the size of mathematical objects. A game theoretic investigation and generalization of two size concepts, which can both be formulated in topological terms, is provided: the so called "Baire category" and the "$σ$-category". This is mainly done by means of (generalized) Banach-Mazur games using the Axiom of determinacy (the inconsistency of AC and AD is reflected in the beginning and a weaker form of AC is chosen for proofs). Analogue versions of Cantor-Bendixson and Heine-Borel are proofed as well as some definability results. Such s…
Countably infinite groups (with a fixed underlying set) constitute a Polish space $G$ with a suitable metric, hence the Baire category theorem holds in $G$. We study isomorphism invariant subsets of $G$, which we call group properties. We say that the generic countably infinite group is of property $P$ if $P$ is comeager in $G$. We prove that every group property with the Baire property is either meager or comeager. We show that there is a comeager elementary equivalence class in $G$ but every isomorphism class is meager. We prove that the generic group is algebraically closed, simple, not fin…
It is studied a connection between the separability and the countable chain condition of spaces with the $L$-property (a topological space $X$ has the $L$-property if for every topological space $Y$, separately continuous function $f:X\times Y\to\mathbb R$ and open set $I\subseteq \mathbb R$ the set $f^{-1}(I)$ is a $F_σ$-set). We show that every completely regular Baire space with the $L$-property and the countable chain condition is separable and construct a nonseparable completely regular space with the $L$-property and the countable chain condition. This gives a negative answer to a questi…
In this paper, we shall study categorial properties of the hyperspace of all nontrivial convergent sequences $\mathcal{S}_c(X)$ of a Freéch-Urysohn space $X$, this hyperspace is equipped with the Vietoris topology. We mainly prove that $\mathcal{S}_c(X)$ is meager whenever $X$ is a crowded space, as a corollary we obtain that if $\mathcal{S}_c(X)$ is Baire, the $X$ has a dense subset of isolated points. As an interesting example $\mathcal{S}_c(ω_1)$ has the Baire property, where $ω_1$ carries the order topology (this answers a question from \cite{sal-yas}). We can give more examples like this …
Using the property of being completely Baire, countable dense homogeneity and the perfect set property we will be able, under Martin's Axiom for countable posets, to distinguish non-principal ultrafilters on $ω$ up to homeomorphism. Here, we identify ultrafilters with subpaces of $2^ω$ in the obvious way. Using the same methods, still under Martin's Axiom for countable posets, we will construct a non-principal ultrafilter $\UU\subseteq 2^ω$ such that $\UU^ω$ is countable dense homogeneous. This consistently answers a question of Hrušák and Zamora Avilés. Finally, we will give some partial resu…
