It is shown that exciton condensates exhibit an incredible richness in the role that fundamental symmetries play whether manifest or broken. We investigate the appearance of the singlet and the triplet excitonic condensates under spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and consider realistic couplings to the radiation field as manipulated by the fundamental symmetries related to spin, time, orbital and particle degrees of freedom. The role of the strong SOC in inducing a ground state with coexisting singlet and triplet components is shown. It is also shown that the ground state of an excitonic condensate, in the realistic senario of spontaneous coupling to the radiation field, is dominated by a dark component transparent to photoluminescence.
It is shown that the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin orbit couplings enhance the conclusive power in the experiments on the excitonic condensed state by at least three low temperature effects. First, spin orbit coupling facilitates the photoluminescense measurements via enhancing the bright contribution in the otherwise dominantly dark exciton condensed state. The second is the presence of a power law temperature dependence of the thermodynamic observables in low temperatures and the weakening of the second order transition at the critical temperature. The third is the appearance of the nondiagona…
We develop a model approach to describe charge fluctuations and different charge phases in strongly correlated 3d oxides. As a generic model system one considers that of centers each with three possible valence states described in frames of pseudo-spin (isospin) formalism by an effective anisotropic non-Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Simple uniform mean-field phases include an insulating monovalent phase, mixed-valence binary disproportionated phase, and mixed-valence ternary under-disproportionated phase. We consider two first phases in more details focusing on the problem of electron/hole states an…
Using a weak-coupling renormalization group formalism, we study competing ordered phases for repulsively interacting fermions on the bilayer honeycomb lattice away from half-filling, which is realized experimentally as doped bilayer graphene. As electrons are added to the system, excitonic order is suppressed, and unconventional superconductivity appears generically in its place. In general it is found that the maximum critical temperature for superconductivity appears directly adjacent to the dome of particle-hole order, illustrating the importance of fluctuations in these channels for the fo…
The condensation of electron-hole (e-h) pairs is studied at zero temperature and in the presence of a weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the inversion-layer quantum wells. Under realistic conditions, a perturbative SOC can have observable effects in the order parameter of the experimentally long-searched-for excitonic condensate. Firstly, the fermion exchange symmetry is absent for the e-h pairs indicating a counterexample to the known classification schemes of fermion pairing. With the lack of fermion exchange, the condensate spin has no definite parity. Additionally, the excitonic SOC breaks …
Currently a way is lacking to detect unambiguously the possible phase coherence of an exciton condensate in an electron-hole double layer. Here we show that despite the fact that excitons are charge-neutral, the double layer exciton superfluid exhibits a diamagnetic response. In devices with specific circular geometry the magnetic flux threading between the layers must be quantized in units of $\frac{h}{e} χ_m$ where $χ_m$ is the diamagnetic susceptibility of the device. We discuss possible experimental realizations of the predicted unconventional flux quantization.

Using a controlled weak-coupling renormalization group approach, we establish the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in the vicinity of spin or charge ordered excitonic states for the case of electrons on the Bernal stacked bilayer honeycomb lattice. With one electron per site this system exhibits nearly parabolically touching conduction and valence bands. Such a state is unstable towards a spontaneous symmetry breaking, and repulsive interactions favor excitonic order, such as a charge nematic and/or a layer antiferromagnet. We find that upon adding charge carriers to the system, t…
Resonant magnetic excitations are widely recognized as hallmarks of unconventional superconductivity in copper oxides, iron pnictides, and heavy-fermion compounds. Numerous model calculations have related these modes to the microscopic properties of the pair wave function, but the mechanisms underlying their formation are still debated. Here we report the discovery of a similar resonant mode in the non-superconducting, antiferromagnetically ordered heavy-fermion metal CeB6. Unlike conventional magnons, the mode is non-dispersive, and its intensity is sharply concentrated around a wave vector s…
In condensed matter systems, out of a large number of interacting degrees of freedom emerge weakly coupled particles, in terms of which most physical properties are described. For example, Landau quasiparticles (QP) determine all electronic properties of a normal metal. The lack of identification of such QPs is major barrier for understanding myriad exotic properties of correlated electrons, such as unconventional superconductivity and non-Fermi liquid behaviours. Here, we report the observation of a composite particle in a Mott insulator Sr2IrO4---and exciton dressed with magnons---that propa…
Superconductors are classified by their pairing mechanism and the coupling strength, measured as the ratio of the energy gap to the critical temperature, Tc. We present an extensive comparison of the gap ratios among many single- and multiband superconductors from simple metals to high-Tc cuprates and iron pnictides. Contrary to the recently suggested universality of this ratio in Fe-based superconductors, we find that the coupling in pnictides ranges from weak, near the BCS limit, to strong, as in cuprates, bridging the gap between these two extremes. Moreover, for Fe- and Cu-based materials,…
Applied pressure drives the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_{5}$ towards a quantum critical point that becomes hidden by a dome of unconventional superconductivity. Magnetic fields suppress this superconducting dome, unveiling the quantum phase transition of local character. Here, we show that $5\%$ magnetic substitution at the Ce site in CeRhIn$_{5}$, either by Nd or Gd, induces a zero-field magnetic instability inside the superconducting state. This magnetic state not only should have a different ordering vector than the high-field local-moment magnetic state, but it also competes with…
The nature of unconventional superconductivity associated with charge density wave order in transition metal dichalcogenides is currently a debated issue. Starting from a normal state elec- tronic structure followed by a charge ordered state how superconductivity in 1T-TiSe 2 arises with applied pressure is still under research. A preformed excitonic liquid driven ordered state mediated superconductivity is found in broad class of TMD on the border of CDW. Using dynamical mean field theory with input from noninteracting band structure calculation, I show a superconducting phase appears near ab…
We investigate the phase diagram and the spin-orbital entanglement of a one-dimensional SU(2)$\otimes XXZ$ model with SU(2) spin exchange and anisotropic $XXZ$ orbital exchange interactions and negative exchange coupling. As a unique feature, the spin-orbital entanglement entropy in the entangled ground states increases here linearly with system size. In the case of Ising orbital interactions we identify an emergent phase with long-range spin-singlet dimer correlations triggered by a quadrupling of correlations in the orbital sector. The peculiar translational invariant spin-singlet dimer phas…
