In condensed matter systems, out of a large number of interacting degrees of freedom emerge weakly coupled particles, in terms of which most physical properties are described. For example, Landau quasiparticles (QP) determine all electronic properties of a normal metal. The lack of identification of such QPs is major barrier for understanding myriad exotic properties of correlated electrons, such as unconventional superconductivity and non-Fermi liquid behaviours. Here, we report the observation of a composite particle in a Mott insulator Sr2IrO4---and exciton dressed with magnons---that propagates with the canonical characteristics of a QP: a finite QP residue and a lifetime longer than the hopping time scale. The dynamics of this charge-neutral bosonic excitation mirrors the fundamental process of the analogous one-hole propagation in the background of ordered spins, for which a well-defined QP has never been observed. The much narrower linewidth of the exciton reveals the same intrinsic dynamics that is obscured for the hole and is intimately related to the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity.
To study excitonic effects on high-harmonic generation (HHG) in Mott insulators, we investigate pumped nonequilibrium dynamics in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. By employing time-dependent calculations based on the exact diagonalization and infinite time-evolving block decimation methods, we find the strong enhancement of the HHG intensity around the exciton energy. The subcycle analysis in the sub-Mott-gap regime shows that the intensity region of the time-resolved spectrum around the exciton energy splits into two levels and oscillates following the driving electric field. This …
We show how strongly correlated materials could be described within the framework of an excitonic insulator formalism, and delineate the relationship between inter- and intra-band ordering phenomena. Our microscopic model of excitons clarifies the fundamental role of Van-Hove-singularity-nesting in driving both inter- and intra-band ordering transitions, and uncovers an interesting connection with resonating-valence-bond physics.
We investigate the effect of nonlocal interactions on the photo-doped Mott insulating state of the two-dimensional Hubbard model using a nonequilibrium generalization of the dynamical cluster approximation. In particular, we compare the situation where the excitonic states are lying within the continuum of doublon-holon excitations to a set-up where the excitons appear within the Mott gap. In the first case, the creation of nearest-neighbor doublon-holon pairs by excitations across the Mott gap results in enhanced excitonic correlations, but these excitons quickly decay into uncorrelated doubl…
In Mott insulators with the t^4_{2g} electronic configuration such as of Re^{3+}, Ru^{4+}, Os^{4+}, and Ir^{5+} ions, spin-orbit coupling dictates a Van Vleck-type nonmagnetic ground state with angular momentum J=0, and the magnetic response is governed by gapped singlet-triplet excitations. We derive the exchange interactions between these excitons and study their collective behavior on different lattices. In perovskites, a conventional Bose condensation of excitons into a magnetic state is found, while an unexpected one-dimensional behavior supporting spin-liquid states emerges in honeycomb …
We have applied a many-body Wannier functions method to theoretically calculate an excitonic optical conductivity spectrum and energy structure in a one-dimensional (1D) Mott insulator at absolute zero temperature with large system size. Focusing on full charge fluctuations associated with pairs of a holon and doublon, we employ a charge model, which is interpreted as a good effective model to investigate photoexcitations of a 1D extended Hubbard model at half-filling in the spin-charge separation picture. As a result, the theoretical spectra with appropriate broadenings qualitatively reproduc…
The real part of optical conductivity $\text{Re}σ(ω)$ of the Mott insulators has a large amount of information on how spin and charge degrees of freedom interact with each other. By using the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group, we study $\text{Re}σ(ω)$ of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice at half filling. We find an excitonic peak at the Mott-gap edge of $\text{Re}σ(ω)$ not only for the two-dimensional square lattice but also for two- and four-leg ladders. For the square lattice, however, we do not clearly find a gap between an excitonic peak and continuum …
Electron quasiparticles are progressively weakened by correlations upon approaching a continuos Mott metal insulator transition in a bulk solid. We show that corresponding to the bulk weakening, a dead layer forms below the surface of the solid, where quasiparticles are exponentially suppressed. The surface dead layer depth is a bulk property, and diverges when the Mott transition is approached. We describe this phenomenon in a Hubbard model within a self-consistent Gutzwiller approximation. Photoemission data of Rodolakis et al. in V2O3 appear to be in accord with this physical picture.
We point out the universal presence of the excitonic superexchange in spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulators. It is observed that, the restriction to the lowest spin-orbit-entangled "$J$" states may sometimes be insufficient to characterize the microscopic physics, and the virtual excitonic processes via the upper "$J$" states provide an important correction to the superexchange. We illustrate this excitonic superexchange from a two-dimensional $5d$ iridate Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and explain its physical consequences such as the orbital-like coupling to the external magnetic flux and the nonlinear magnetic…
A three-orbital model derived from the two-dimensional projection of the $ab$ $initio$ Hamiltonian for alkaline doped fullerene A$_3$C$_{60}$ with A=Cs,Rb,K is studied by a variational Monte Carlo method. We correctly reproduce the experimental isotropic s-wave superconductivity around the $ab$ $initio$ parameters. With narrowing the bandwidth, the transition to an insulator is also reproduced, where orbital symmetry is found to be spontaneously broken with emergence of an excitonic Mott insulator for two orbitals and an antiferromagnetic insulator nearly degenerate with a spin liquid for the …
Landau suggested that the low-temperature properties of metals can be understood in terms of long-lived quasiparticles with all complex interactions included in Fermi-liquid parameters, such as the effective mass $m^{\star}$. Despite its wide applicability, electronic transport in bad or strange metals and unconventional superconductors is controversially discussed towards a possible collapse of the quasiparticle concept. Here we explore the electrodynamic response of correlated metals at half filling for varying correlation strength upon approaching a Mott insulator. We reveal persistent Ferm…
We show that the Mott insulating state of the half-filled paramagnetic Hubbard model in infinite dimensions contains electronic quasiparticles with very small quasiparticle weight at the inner edge of the Hubbard bands. We use a stochastic and non-perturbative quantum impurity solver based on calculating the impurity self energy as a sample average over a representative distribution of impurity models solved by exact diagonalization. Due to the natural parallelization of the method, millions of poles are readily generated for the self energy which allows to work with very small pole-broadening…
Observation of excitonic Floquet states in a one-dimensional organic Mott insulator using mid-infrared pump near-infrared probe reflection spectroscopy
The density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method is used to investigate optical excitations in the Mott insulating phase of a one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. The linear optical conductivity is calculated using the dynamical DMRG method and the nature of the lowest optically excited states is investigated using a symmetrized DMRG approach. The numerical calculations agree perfectly with field-theoretical predictions for a small Mott gap and analytical results for a large Mott gap obtained with a strong-coupling analysis. Is is shown that four types of optical excitations exist in …
Femtosecond relaxation of photo-excited quasiparticles in the one dimensional Mott insulator ET-F2TCNQ are measured as a function of external pressure, which is used to tune the electronic structure. By fitting the static optical properties and measuring femtosecond decay times at each pressure value, we correlate the relaxation rates with the electronic bandwidth t and on the intersite correlation energy V. The scaling of relaxation times with microscopic parameters is different than for metals and semiconductors. The competition between localization and delocalization of the Mott-Hubbard exc…
Filling-control metal-insulator transition on the two-dimensional Hubbard model is investigated by using the correlator projection method, which takes into account momentum dependence of the free energy beyond the dynamical mean-field theory. The phase diagram of metals and Mott insulators is analyzed. Lifshitz transitions occur simultaneously with metal-insulator transitions at large Coulomb repulsion. On the other hand, they are separated each other for lower Coulomb repulsion, where the phase sandwiched by the Lifshitz and metal-insulator transitions appears to show violation of the Lutting…
The quasiparticle decays due to electron-electron interaction in silicon are studied by means of first-principles all-electron GW approximation. The spectral function as well as the dominant relaxation mechanisms giving rise to the finite life time of quasiparticles are analyzed. It is then shown that these life times and quasiparticle energies can be used to compute the complex dielectric function including many-body effects without resorting to empirical broadening to mimic the decay of excited states. This method is applied for the computation of the electron energy loss spectrum of silicon…
Bilayer electron-hole systems undergo excitonic condensation when the distance d between the layers is smaller than the typical distance between particles within a layer. All excitons in this condensate have a fixed dipole moment which points perpendicular to the layers, and therefore this condensate of dipoles couples to external electromagnetic fields. We study the transport properties of this dipolar condensate system based on a phenomenological model which takes into account contributions from the condensate and quasiparticles. We discuss, in particular, the drag and counterflow transport,…
We define, compute and analyze the nonequilibrium differential optical conductivity of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half-filling after applying a pump pulse, using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method. The melting of the Mott insulator is accompanied by a suppression of the local magnetic moment and ensuing photogeneration of doublon-holon pairs. The differential optical conductivity reveals $(i)$ mid-gap states related to parity-forbidden optical states, and $(ii)$ strong renormalization and hybridization of the excitonic resonance and the absorption…
Time-resolved soft-X-ray photoemission spectroscopy is used to simultaneously measure the ultrafast dynamics of core-level spectral functions and excited states upon excitation of excitons in WSe$_2$. We present a many-body approximation for the Green's function, which excellently describes the transient core-hole spectral function. The relative dynamics of excited-state signal and core levels reveals a delayed core-hole renormalization due to screening by excited quasi-free carriers, revealing an excitonic Mott transition. These findings establish time-resolved core-level photoelectron spectr…
We study the optical response of a Mott Hubbard system in the framework of the half--filled Extended Hubbard Model using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method. We discuss the appearance of excitonic features inside the spectral gap as the system goes from the Spin Density Wave (SDW) to the Charge Density Wave (CDW) phase.
The Hall angle in the doped V_2O_3 is discussed on the basis of an extended Ginzburg-Landau theory of spin fluctuations. A spinon-like collective transport process beyond the ordinary quasiparticle transport theory is necessary to understand the experiment. At the same time a criticism of a quasiparticle transport theory on the basis of the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation is made.
We calculate the zero-temperature gap and quasiparticle weight of the half-filled Hubbard model with a random dispersion relation. After extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit, we obtain reliable bounds on these quantities for the Hubbard model in infinite dimensions. Our data indicate that the Mott-Hubbard transition is continuous, i.e., that the quasiparticle weight becomes zero at the same critical interaction strength at which the gap opens.
We investigate the Mott transition in the Kagomé lattice Hubbard model using a cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory. The calculation of the double occupancy, the density of states, the static and dynamical spin correlation functions demonstrates that the system undergoes the first-order Mott transition at the Hubbard interaction $U/W \sim 1.4$ ($W$:bandwidth). In the metallic phase close to the Mott transition, we find the strong renormalization of three distinct bands, giving rise to the formation of heavy quasiparticles with strong frustration. It is elucidated that the quasipart…
We investigate the Mott transition in the anisotropic kagomé lattice Hubbard model using the cellular dynamical mean field theory combined with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations. By calculating the double occupancy and the density of states, we determine the interaction strength of the first-order Mott transition and show that it becomes small as the anisotropy increases. We also calculate the spin correlation functions and the single-particle spectrum, and reveal that the quasiparticle and magnetic properties change dramatically around the Mott transition; the spin correlations …
We investigate the characteristics of the metallic phase near the Mott transition in the Kagomé lattice Hubbard model using the cellular dynamical mean field theory. By calculating the specific heat and spin correlation functions, we demonstrate that the quasiparticles show anomalous properties in the metallic phase close to the Mott transition. We find clear evidence for the multi-band heavy quasiparticles in the specific heat, which gives rise to unusual temperature dependence of the spin correlation functions.
The dynamics of charge carriers close to the Mott transition is explored theoretically and experimentally in the quasi two-dimensional organic charge-transfer salt $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br$_x$Cl$_{1-x}$, with varying Br content. The frequency dependence of the conductivity deviates significantly from simple Drude model behavior: there is a strong redistribution of spectral weight as the Mott transition is approached and with temperature. The effective mass of the quasiparticles increases considerably when coming close to the insulating phase. A dynamical mean-field-theory treatment of…

We study the ground-state topology and quasiparticle properties in bosonic Mott insulators with two- dimensional spin-orbit couplings in cold atomic optical lattices. We show that the many-body Chern and spin-Chern number can be expressed as an integral of the quasihole Berry curvatures over the Brillouin zone. Using a strong-coupling perturbation theory, for an experimentally feasible spin-orbit coupling, we compute the Berry curvature and the spin Chern number and find that these quantities can be generated purely by interactions. We also compute the quasiparticle dispersions, spectral weigh…
We show theoretically the fingerprints of short-range spiral magnetic correlations in the photoemission spectra of the Mott insulating ground states realized in the triangular silicon surfaces K/Si(111)-B and SiC(0001). The calculated spectra present low energy features of magnetic origin with a reduced dispersion ~10-40 meV compared with the center-of-mass spectra bandwidth ~0.2-0:3 eV. Remarkably, we find that the quasiparticle signal survives only around the magnetic Goldstone modes. Our findings would position these silicon surfaces as new candidates to investigate non-conventional quasipa…
The renormalization factor, dubbed ``quasiparticle charge'' Z_e, of the coupling between the supercurrent and quasiparticles was analyzed in the context of high temperature cuprates in a recent paper by Ioffe and Millis. They observed that Z_e in cuprates deviates from the BCS value (Z_e=1), which was interpreted as the proximity effect near a Mott insulator. Here we show that the deviation from Z_e=1 can occur, in general, even in the absence of quasiparticle interactions, when the superconducting order coexists with another order parameter with the same internal symmetry. As an example, we c…
We study excitonic pairing in nodal fermion systems characterized by a vanishing quasiparticle density of states at the pointlike Fermi surface and a concomitant lack of screening for long-range interactions. By solving the gap equation for the excitonic order parameter, we obtain a critical value of the interaction strength for a variety of power-law interactions and densities of states. We compute the free energy and analyze possible phase transitions, thus shedding further light on the unusual pairing properties of this peculiar class of strongly correlated systems.
Using the variational cluster approach based on the self-energy functional theory, we study the possible occurrence of excitonic order and superconductivity in the two-orbital Hubbard model with intra- and inter-orbital Coulomb interactions. It is known that an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator state appears in the regime of strong intra-orbital interaction, a band insulator state appears in the regime of strong inter-orbital interaction, and an excitonic insulator state appears between them. In addition to these states, we find that the $s^{\pm}$-wave superconducting state appears in the small…
The strong coupling half-filled Kondo lattice model is an important example of a strongly interacting dense Fermi system for which conventional Fermi gas analysis has thus far failed. We remedy this by deriving an exact transformation that maps the model to a dilute gas of weakly interacting electron and hole quasiparticles that can then be analyzed by conventional dilute Fermi gas methods. The quasiparticle vacuum is a singlet Mott insulator for which the quasiparticle dynamics are simple. Since the transformation is exact, the electron spectral weight sum rules are obeyed exactly. Subtleties…
We use a three-pulse ultrafast optical spectroscopy to study the relaxation processes in a frustrated Mott insulator Na$_2$IrO$_3$. By being able to independently produce the out-of-equilibrium bound states (excitons) of doublons and holons with the first pulse and suppress the underlying antiferromagnetic order with the second one, we were able to elucidate the relaxation mechanism of quasiparticles in this system. By observing the difference in the exciton dynamics in the magnetically ordered and disordered phases we found that the mass of this quasiparticle is mostly determined by its inter…
The quasiparticle interferences (QPIs) of a Mott insulator are investigated using the $T$-matrix formalism implemented with the dynamical mean-field theory ($T$-DMFT). In Mott insulating state, because DMFT predicts a singularity in the real part of the electron self energy $\Re Σ(ω) \sim η/ω$ at low frequency, where $η$ can be considered as the 'order parameter' for Mott insulating state, QPIs are completely washed out at the small bias voltage. However, a further analysis shows that $\Re Σ(ω)$ in fact serves as an energy-dependent chemical potential shift. As a result, the effective bias vol…
Surface effects of a doped thin film made of a strongly correlated material are investigated both in the absence and presence of a perpendicular electric field. We use an inhomogeneous Gutzwiller approximation for a single band Hubbard model in order to describe correlation effects. For low doping, the bulk value of the quasiparticle weight is recovered exponentially deep into the slab, but with increasing doping, additional Friedel oscillations appear near the surface. We show that the inverse correlation length has a power-law dependence on the doping level. In the presence of an electrical …
Magnetism in transition-metal compounds (TMCs) has traditionally been associated with spin degrees of freedom, because the orbital magnetic moments are typically largely quenched. On the other hand, magnetic order in 4f- and 5d-electron systems arises from spin and orbital moments that are rigidly tied together by the large intra-atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Using inelastic neutron scattering on the archetypal 4d-electron Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, we report a novel form of excitonic magnetism in the intermediate-strength regime of the SOC. The magnetic order is characterized by ``soft…
We consider theoretically the formation and stability of quasi-one dimensional many-body excitons in GaAs quantum wire structures under external photoexcitation conditions by solving the dynamically screened Bethe-Salpeter equation for realistic Coulomb interaction. In agreement with several recent experimental findings the calculated excitonic peak shows very weak carrier density dependence upto (and even above) the Mott transition density, $n_c\sim3\times10^5$ cm$^{-1}$. Above $n_c$ we find considerable optical gain demonstrating compellingly the possibility of one-dimensional quantum wire l…
We study the electronic state of the doped Mott-Hubbard insulator within Dynamical Mean Field Theory. The evolution of the finite temperature spectral functions as a function of doping show large redistributions of spectral weight in both antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. In particular, a metallic antiferromagnetic state is obtained with a low frequency Slater-splitted quasiparticle peak coexisting with Hubbard bands. In the high temperature paramagnetic metallic phase, upon reducing doping, the system has a crossover through a ``bad metal'' state characterized by an anomalous shift o…
We study carrier interaction induced many-body effects on the excitonic optical properties of highly photoexcited one-dimensional semiconductor quantum wire systems by solving the dynamically screened Bethe-Salpeter equation using realistic Coulomb interaction between carriers. Including dynamical screening effects in the electron/hole self-energy and in the electron-hole interaction vertex function, we find that the excitonic absorption is essentially peaked at a constant energy for a large range of photoexcitation density ($n= 0-6\times 10^5$ cm$^{-1}$), above which the absorption peak disap…
We investigate transport in strongly correlated metals. Within dynamical mean-field theory, we calculate the resistivity, thermopower, optical conductivity and thermodynamic properties of a hole-doped Mott insulator. Two well-separated temperature scales are identified: T_FL below which Landau Fermi liquid behavior applies, and T_MIR above which the resistivity exceeds the Mott-Ioffe-Regel value and `bad-metal' behavior is found. We show that quasiparticle excitations remain well-defined above T_FL and dominate transport throughout the intermediate regime T_FL < T_MIR. The lifetime of these `r…
How a Mott insulator develops into a weakly coupled metal upon doping is a central question to understanding various emergent correlated phenomena. To analyze this evolution and its connection to the high-$T_c$ cuprates, we study the single-particle spectrum for the doped Hubbard model using cluster perturbation theory on superclusters. Starting from extremely low doping, we identify a heavily renormalized quasiparticle dispersion that immediately develops across the Fermi level, and a weakening polaronic side band at higher binding energy. The quasiparticle spectral weight roughly grows at tw…
Appropriately designed transition metal oxide heterostructures involving small band gap Mott insulators are argued to support spatially separated electron and hole gasses at equilibrium. Spatial separations and carrier densities favoring the formation of excitonic states are achievable. The excitonic states may exhibit potentially novel properties. Energetic estimates are given, candidate material systems are discussed, and the possibility of large photvoltaic effects is mentioned
We present high-resolution thermal diffusivity measurements on several near optimally doped electron- and hole-doped cuprate systems in a temperature range that passes through the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit, above which the quasiparticle picture fails. Our primary observations are that the inverse thermal diffusivity is linear in temperature and can be fitted to $D_Q^{-1}=aT+b$. The slope $a$ is interpreted through the Planckian relaxation time $τ\approx\hbar/k_BT$ and a thermal diffusion velocity $v_B$, which is close, but larger than the sound velocity. The intercept $b$ represent a crossover di…
Exciton Mott transition in Si is investigated by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The excitonic correlation as manifested by the 1s-2p resonance is observed above the Mott density. The scattering rate of charge carriers is prominently enhanced at the proximity of Mott density, which is attributed to the non-vanishing exciton correlation in the metallic electron-hole plasma. Concomitantly, the signature of plasmon-exciton coupling is observed in the loss function spectra.
A long-standing issue in the physics of strongly correlated electronic systems is whether the motion of a single hole in quantum antiferromagnets can be understood in terms of the quasiparticle picture. Very recently, investigations of this issue have been within the experimental reach. Here we perform a large-scale density matrix renormalization group study, and provide the first unambiguous numerical evidence showing that in ladder systems, a single hole doped in the Mott antiferromagnet does not behave as a quasiparticle. Specifically, the injected hole is found to be always localized as lo…
The ground state properties of a paramagnetic Mott insulator are investigated in the presence of an external electrical field using the inhomogeneous Gutzwiller approximation for a single band Hubbard model in a slab geometry. The metal insulator transition is shifted towards higher Hubbard repulsions by applying an electric field perpendicular to the slab. The spatial distribution of site dependent quasiparticle weight shows that the quasiparticle weight is maximum in few layers beneath the surface. Moreover only at higher Hubbard repulsion, larger than the bulk critical U, the electric field…
The combination of strong spin-orbit coupling and correlations, e.g. in ruthenates and iridates, has been proposed as a means to realize quantum materials with nontrivial topological properties. We discuss here Mott insulators where onsite spin-orbit coupling favors a local $J_{\textrm{tot}}=0$ singlet ground state. We investigate excitations into a low-lying triplet, triplons, and find them to acquire nontrivial band topology in a magnetic field. We also comment on magnetic states resulting from triplon condensation, where we find, in addition to the same ordered phases known from the $J_{\te…
We present a study of VO2 in the rutile and monoclinic (M1) phases by means of all-electron full-potential LMTO GW calculation. Full frequency dependence and the off-diagonal matrix elements of the self-energy are taken into account. As a result of dynamical correlation, a satellite structure is found above the $t_{2g}$ quasiparticle peak but not below, in both the rutile and monoclinic phases. For the monoclinic structure, the insulating state is not obtained within the usual 1-shot GW calculation. We perform a simplified "self-consistent" GW scheme by adding a uniform shift to the conduction…
Superconductivity in underdoped cuprates emerges from an unusual electronic state characterised by nodal quasiparticles and an antinodal pseudogap. The relation between this state and superconductivity is intensely studied but remains controversial. The discrimination between competing theoretical models is hindered by a lack of electronic structure data from related doped Mott insulators. Here we report the doping evolution of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, a close analogue to underdoped cuprates. We demonstrate that metallicity emerges from a rapid collapse of the Mott gap wit…
Optical excitation serves as a powerful approach to control the electronic structure of layered Van der Waals materials via many-body screening effects, induced by photoexcited free carriers, or via light-driven coherence, such as optical Stark and Bloch-Siegert effects. Although theoretical work has also pointed to an exotic mechanism of renormalizing band structure via excitonic correlations in bound electron-hole pairs (excitons), experimental observation of such exciton-driven band renormalization and the full extent of their implications is still lacking, largely due to the limitations of…
