Resonant magnetic excitations are widely recognized as hallmarks of unconventional superconductivity in copper oxides, iron pnictides, and heavy-fermion compounds. Numerous model calculations have related these modes to the microscopic properties of the pair wave function, but the mechanisms underlying their formation are still debated. Here we report the discovery of a similar resonant mode in the non-superconducting, antiferromagnetically ordered heavy-fermion metal CeB6. Unlike conventional magnons, the mode is non-dispersive, and its intensity is sharply concentrated around a wave vector separate from those characterizing the antiferromagnetic order. The magnetic intensity distribution rather suggests that the mode is associated with a coexisting order parameter of the unusual antiferro-quadrupolar phase of CeB6, which has long remained "hidden" to the neutron-scattering probes. The mode energy increases continuously below the onset temperature for antiferromagnetism, in parallel to the opening of a nearly isotropic spin gap throughout the Brillouin zone. These attributes bear strong similarity to those of the resonant modes observed in unconventional superconductors below their critical temperatures. This unexpected commonality between the two disparate ground states indicates the dominance of itinerant spin dynamics in the ordered low-temperature phases of CeB6 and throws new light on the interplay between antiferromagnetism, superconductivity, and "hidden" order parameters in correlated-electron materials.
The space and time symmetry breaking at magnetic phase transitions in multiferroics results in a number of strongly pronounced optical effects. Our high-resolution spectroscopic study of 3d- excitons in a complex multi-sublattice magnetoelectric CuB2O4 demonstrates that, among those, a large antiferromagnetic linear dichroism is observed which is highly sublattice-sensitive to subtle changes in the spin subsystems. We prove that the discovered linear dichroism is related microscopically to the magnetic Davydov splitting of the exciton states. We announce a novel magnetic phase transition and a…
Using the self-consistent Born approximation we study the delocalization of interlayer excitons in the bilayer Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet. Under realistic conditions we find that the coupling between the exciton motion and the spin system is strongly enhanced as compared to the case of a single carrier, to a degree that it mimics the confinement physics of carriers in Ising spin systems. We predict that the "ladder spectrum" associated with this confinement physics should be visible in the c-axis exciton spectra of insulating bilayer cuprates such as YBa2Cu3O6. Our discovery indicates …
The recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals magnet NiPS$_3$ provides a new route to examine many-body quasiparticles under 2D confinement. Excitons are of particular interest due to their strong coupling to the magnetic ground state in this material. Here, by using a first-principles based approach, we find bright excitons between 1.4 eV to 1.7 eV, similar to the sharp coherent and band edge excitons experimentally observed. Our analysis shows that each exciton in NiPS$_3$ is composed of a combination of $d$-$d$ and charge-transfer character, where the relative ratio of each pai…
Explaining the mechanism of superconductivity in the high-$T_c$ cuprates requires an understanding of what causes electrons to form Cooper pairs. Pairing can be mediated by phonons, the screened Coulomb force, spin or charge fluctuations, excitons, or by a combination of these. An excitonic pairing mechanism has been postulated, but experimental evidence for coupling between conduction electrons and excitons in the cuprates is sporadic. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to monitor the temperature dependence of the $\underline{d}d$ exciton spectrum of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$…
We study the electronic properties of AA-stacked bilayer graphene in a transverse electric field. The strong on-site Coulomb repulsion stabilizes the antiferromagnetic order in such a system. The antiferromagnetic order is suppressed by the transverse bias voltage, at least partially. The inter-plane Coulomb repulsion and non-zero voltage stabilize an exciton order parameter. The exciton order parameter coexists with the antiferromagnetism and can be as large as several tens of meV for realistic values of the bias voltage and interaction constants. The application of a transverse bias voltage …
Excitonic insulators are usually considered to form via the condensation of a soft charge mode of bound electron-hole pairs. This, however, presumes that the soft exciton is of spin-singlet character. Early theoretical considerations have also predicted a very distinct scenario, in which the condensation of magnetic excitons results in an antiferromagnetic excitonic insulator state. Here we report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of Sr3Ir2O7. By isolating the longitudinal component of the spectra, we identify a magnetic mode that is well-defined at the magnetic and struc…
CeCo(In$_{0.990}$Hg$_{0.010}$)$_{5}$ is a charge doped variant of the $d$-wave CoCoIn$_{5}$ superconductor with coexistent antiferromagnetic and superconducting transitions occurring at T$_{N}$= 3.4 K and T$_{c}$=1.4 K, respectively. We use neutron diffraction and spectroscopy to show that the magnetic resonant fluctuations present in the parent superconducting phase are replaced by collinear $c$-axis magnetic order with three-dimensional Ising critical fluctuations. No low energy transverse spin fluctuations are observable in this doping-induced antiferromagnetic phase and the dynamic resonan…
Using a combination of ultraviolet-vacuum ultraviolet reflectivity and spectroscopic ellipsometry, we observe a resonant exciton at an unusually high energy of 6.3eV in epitaxial graphene. Surprisingly, the resonant exciton occurs at room temperature and for a very large number of graphene layers $N$$\approx$75, thus suggesting a poor screening in graphene. The optical conductivity ($σ_1$) of resonant exciton scales linearly with number of graphene layer (up to \emph{at least} 8 layers) implying quantum character of electrons in graphene. Furthermore, a prominent excitation at 5.4eV, which is …
Avoided crossing of the emission lines of a nearly free positive trion and a cyclotron replica of an exciton bound to an interface acceptor has been observed in the magneto-photoluminescence spectra of p-doped GaAs quantum wells. Identification of the localized state depended on the precise mapping of the anti-crossing pattern. The underlying coupling is caused by an exciton transfer combined with a resonant cyclotron excitation of an additional hole. The emission spectrum of the resulting magnetically tunable coherent state probes weak localization in the quantum well.
Matter-light interaction is at the center of diverse research fields from quantum optics to condensed matter physics, opening new fields like laser physics. A magnetic exciton is one such rare example found in magnetic insulators. However, it is relatively rare to observe that external variables control matter-light interaction. Here, we report that the broken inversion symmetry of multiferroicity can act as an external knob enabling the magnetic exciton in van der Waals antiferromagnet NiI2. We further discover that this magnetic exciton arises from a transition between Zhang-Rice-triplet and…
Precise infrared magnetotransmission experiments have been performed in magnetic fields up to 32 T on a series of multilayer epitaxial graphene samples. We observe changes in the spectral features and broadening of the main cyclotron transition when the incoming photon energy is in resonance with the lowest Landau level separation and the energy of a K point optical phonon. We have developed a theory that explains and quantitatively reproduces the frequency and magnetic field dependence of the phenomenon as the absorption of a photon together with the simultaneous creation of an intervalley, i…
The distribution of chemically similar transition-metal ions is a fundamental issue in the study of herbertsmithite-type kagome antiferromagnets. Using synchrotron radiation, we have performed resonant powder x-ray diffractions on newly synthesized CoCu3(OH)6Cl2, which provide an exact distribution of transition-metal ions in the frustrated antiferromagnet. Both magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements are quantitatively consistent with the occupation fractions determined by resonant x-ray diffraction. The distribution of transition-metal ions and residual magnetic entropy sugges…
We report on optical transmission spectroscopy of the Cr-based frustrated triangular antiferromagnets CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4, and the spinels CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4 in the near-infrared to visible-light frequency range. We explore the possibility to search for spin correlations far above the magnetic ordering temperature and for anomalies in the magnon lifetime in the magnetically ordered state by probing exciton-magnon sidebands of the spin-forbidden crystal-field transitions of the Cr3+ ions (spin S = 3/2). In CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4 the appearance of fine structures below T_N is assigned to…
The resonant interaction between quasi-one dimensional excitons and photons is investigated. For a single isolated organic quantum wire, embedded in its single crystal monomer matrix, the strong exciton-photon coupling regime is reached. This is evidenced by the suppression of the resonant excitonic absorption arising when the system eigenstate is a polariton. These observations demonstrate that the resonant excitonic absorption in a semiconductor can be understood in terms of a balance between the exciton coherence time and the Rabi period between exciton-like and photon-like states of the po…

Using the variational cluster approach based on the self-energy functional theory, we study the possible occurrence of excitonic order and superconductivity in the two-orbital Hubbard model with intra- and inter-orbital Coulomb interactions. It is known that an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator state appears in the regime of strong intra-orbital interaction, a band insulator state appears in the regime of strong inter-orbital interaction, and an excitonic insulator state appears between them. In addition to these states, we find that the $s^{\pm}$-wave superconducting state appears in the small…
We report the high resolution resonant inelastic EUV scattering study of quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCoF3. By tuning the EUV photon energy to cobalt M23 edge, a complete set of low energy 3d spin-orbital excitations is revealed. These low-lying electronic excitations are modeled using an extended multiplet-based mean field calculation to identify the roles of lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom in modifying the RIXS spectral lineshape. We have demonstrated that the temperature dependence of RIXS features upon the antiferromagnetic ordering transition enables us to probe the energet…
With electron filling $n=1$ in the $\rm Sr_2VO_4$ compound, the octahedrally coordinated $t_{\rm 2g}$ orbitals are strongly active due to tetragonal distortion induced crystal field tuning by external agent such as pressure. Considering the full range of crystal field induced tetragonal splitting in a realistic three-orbital model, collective spin-orbital excitations are investigated using the generalized self consistent and fluctuation approach. The variety of self consistent states obtained including orbital entangled ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders reflects the rich spin-orbital …
Titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) has rich physical properties with potential implications in both fundamental physics and new applications. Up-to-date, the main focus of applied research is to tune its optical properties, which is usually done via doping and/or nano-engineering. However, understanding the role of $d$-electrons in materials and possible functionalization of $d$-electron properties are still major challenges. Herewith, within a combination of an innovative experimental technique, high energy optical conductivity, and of the state-of-the-art {\it ab initio} electronic structure calcula…

We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of La2CuO4. A number of spectral features are identified that were not clearly visible in earlier lower-resolution data. The momentum dependence of the spectral weight and the dispersion of the lowest energy excitation across the insulating gap have been measured in detail. The temperature dependence of the spectral features was also examined. The observed charge transfer edge shift, along with the low dispersion of the first charge transfer excitation are attributed to the lattice motion being coupled to the electronic syst…
We propose a novel mechanism for exchange-induced exciton-magnon absorptions via hopping between two antiferromagnetically coupled sites and a simultaneous magnetic dipole transition to an excited orbital state. The obtained selection rules correspond to ones for magnetic dipole transitions and are in agreement with the exciton-magnon transitions observed in the quasi one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF3. The calculated magnon density of states in combination with a structure dependent factor identifies the observed optical magnon sideband to originate from transverse magnon modes.

We studied the intensity of resonant Raman scattering due to optical phonons in a planar II-VI-type semiconductor microcavity in the regime of strong coupling between light and matter. Two different sets of independent experiments were performed at near outgoing resonance with the middle polariton (MP)branch of the cavity. In the first, the Stokes-shifted photons were kept at exact resonance with the MP, varying the photonic or excitonic character of the polariton. In the second, only the incoming light wavelength was varied, and the resonant profile of the inelastic scattered intensity was st…
We studied the magnetic ordering of thin films and bulk crystals of rutile RuO$_2$ using resonant X-ray scattering across the Ru L$_2$ absorption edge. Combining polarization analysis and azimuthal-angle dependence of the magnetic Bragg signal, we have established the presence of G-type antiferromagnetism in RuO$_2$ with T$_N$ $>$ 300 K. In addition to revealing a spin-ordered ground state in the simplest ruthenium oxide compound, the persistence of magnetic order even in nanometer-thick films lays the ground for potential applications of RuO$_2$ in antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Resonant behavior of the Raman process is predicted when the laser frequency is close to the orbital excitation energy of LaMnO3 at 2 eV. The incident photon creates a vibrationally excited self-trapped ``orbiton'' state from the orbitally-ordered Jahn-Teller (JT) ground state. Trapping occurs by local oxygen rearrangement. Then the Franck-Condon mechanism activates multiphonon Raman scattering. The amplitude of the $n$-phonon process is first order in the electron-phonon coupling $g$. The resonance occurs {\it via} a dipole forbidden $d$ to $d$ transition. We previously suggested that this tr…
We report the direct observation of slow fluctuations of helical antiferromagnetic domains in an ultra-thin holmium film using coherent resonant magnetic x-ray scattering. We observe a gradual increase of the fluctuations in the speckle pattern with increasing temperature, while at the same time a static contribution to the speckle pattern remains. This finding indicates that domain-wall fluctuations occur over a large range of time scales. We ascribe this non-ergodic behavior to the strong dependence of the fluctuation rate on the local thickness of the film.
