We perform the perturbative generation of the higher-derivative Chern-Simons contribution to the effective action in the three-dimensional QED at zero and finite temperature. In the latter case, we show that as the temperature goes to infinity this contribution vanishes. However, as expected, as the temperature goes to zero only the covariant part survives. The non-covariant part contributes only in intermediate temperatures where presents a maximum.
We revisit the Coleman-Hill theorem in the context of reduced planar QED. Using the global U(1) Ward identity for this non-local but still gauge invariant theory, we can confirm that the topological piece of the photon self-energy at zero momentum does not receive further quantum corrections apart from the potential one-loop contribution, even when considering the Lorentz non-invariant case due to the Fermi velocity $v_F<c$. This is of relevance to probe possible time parity odd dynamics in a planar sheet of graphene which has an effective description in terms of $(2+1)$-dimensional planar red…
Induced Lorentz-Violating Chern-Simons Term in QED: Uncovering Short Distance Interaction Terms in the Effective Lagrangian without the Shadow of Regularization
We study monopole operators with the lowest possible topological charge $q=1/2$ at the infrared fixed point of scalar electrodynamics in $2+1$ dimension (scalar QED$_3$) with $N$ complex scalars and Chern-Simons coupling $|k|=N$. In the large $N$ expansion, monopole operators in this theory with spins $\ell<O(\sqrt{N})$ and associated flavor representations are expected to have the same scaling dimension to sub-leading order in $1/N$. We use the state-operator correspondence to calculate the scaling dimension to sub-leading order with the result $N-0.2789+O(1/N)$, which improves on existing le…
Mixed dimensional theories have been used to describe condensed matter systems where fermions are constrained to a plane while the gauge fields they interact with remain four-dimensional. Here we investigate dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in the framework of a mixed-dimensional theory that has been successful in describing graphene and other planar Dirac materials and has been dubbed as Pseudo or Reduced Quantum Electrodynamics. We explore the interplay between the gauge and fermion sector when a Chern-Simons term is considered and, by exploring the tensor structure of the fermion self …
Chiral symmetry breaking comes from the mass dynamically generated through interaction of Dirac fermions for both quantum electrodynamics in (2+1)D (QED3) and (3+1)D (QED4). In QED3, the presence of a Chern-Simons (CS) parameter affects the critical structure of the theory, favoring the symmetric phase where the electron remains massless. Here, we calculate the main effects of a Pseudo-Chern-Simons (PCS) parameter $θ$ into the dynamical mass generation of Pseudo quantum electrodynamics (PQED). The $θ$-parameter provides a mass scale for PQED at classical level and appears as the pole of the ga…

In this paper, we study the one-loop induced photon's effective action in the very special relativity electrodynamics in $(2+1)$ spacetime (VSR-QED$_{3}$). Due to the presence of new nonlocal couplings resulting from the VSR gauge symmetry, we have additional graphs contributing to the $\langle AA\rangle$ and $\langle AAA \rangle$ amplitudes. From these contributions, we discuss the VSR generalization of the Abelian Maxwell-Chern-Simons Lagrangian, consisting in the dynamical part and the Chern-Simons-like self-couplings, respectively. We use the VSR-Chern-Simons electrodynamics to discuss som…
Quantum corrections to Lorentz- and CPT-violating QED in flat spacetime produce unusual radiative corrections, which can be finite but of undetermined magnitude. The corresponding radiative corrections in a gravitational theory are even stranger, since the term in the fermion action involving a preferred axial vector $b^μ$ would give rise to a gravitational Chern-Simons term that is proportional $b^μ$, yet which actually does not break Lorentz invariance. Initially, the coefficient of this gravitational Chern-Simons term appears to have the same ambiguity as the coefficient for the analogous t…
We calculate higher-order quantum contributions in different Lorentz-violating parameters to the gauge sector of the extended QED. As a result of this one-loop calculation, some terms which do not produce first-order corrections, contribute with nontrivial gauge-invariant second-order quantum inductions.
