The radiative induction of the CPT and Lorentz violating Chern-Simons (CS) term is reassessed. The massless and massive models are studied. Special attention is given to the preservation of gauge symmetry at higher orders in the background vector $b_μ$ when radiative corrections are considered. Both the study of the odd and even parity sectors of the complete vacuum polarization tensor at one-loop order and a non-perturbative analysis show that this symmetry must be preserved by the quantum corrections. As a complement we obtain that transversality of the polarization tensor does not fix the value of the coefficient of the induced CS term.
We show that in the functional integral formalism the (finite) coefficient of the induced, Lorentz- and CPT-violating Chern-Simons term, arising from the Lorentz- and CPT-violating fermion sector, is undetermined.
We study the $z=3$ Horava-Lifshitz QED with a CPT-breaking term, characterized by the axial vector $b_μ$, and perform the one-loop calculations. Explicitly, we demonstrate that just as in the usual Lorentz-breaking QED, in our case, the Carroll-Field-Jackiw term is finite but ambiguous.
We rediscuss the recent controversy on a possible Chern-Simons like term generated through radiative corrections in QED with a CPT violating term. We emphasize the fact that any absence of an {\sl a priori} divergence should be explained by some symmetry or some non-renormalisation theorem : otherwise, no prediction can be made on the corresponding quantity.
In this paper, we apply the functional integral methodology to induce the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term in Horava-Lifshitz $z=3$ CPT-violating QED, where Lorentz and CPT breaking for fermion and photon sectors is introduced, and show that the CFJ term is finite but undetermined.
We calculate the induced Lorentz- and CPT-violating Chern-Simons term arising from the Lorentz- and CPT-violating sector of quantum electrodynamics with a $b_μ\barψγ^μγ_5ψ$ term. The result to all orders in $b$ coincides with the previous linear-in-$b$ calulation by Chung and Oh [hep-th/9812132] as well as Jackiw and Kostelecký [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 82}, 3572 (1999)], since all higher order terms vanish.
We calculate by the method of dimensional regularization and derivative expansion the one-loop effective action for a Dirac fermion with a Lorentz-violating and CPT-odd kinetic term in the background of a gauge field. We show that this term induces a Chern-Simons modification to Maxwell theory. Some related issues are also discussed.
Radiative corrections arising from the axial coupling of charged fermions to a constant vector b_μcan induce a Lorentz- and CPT-violating Chern-Simons term in the QED action. We calculate the exact one-loop correction to this term keeping the full b_μdependence, and show that in the physically interesting cases it coincides with the lowest-order result. The effect of regularization and renormalization and the implications of the result are briefly discussed.
Focusing on gauge degrees of freedom specified by a 1+3 dimensions model hosting a Maxwell term plus a Lorentz and CPT non-invariant Chern-Simons-like contribution, we obtain a minimal extension of such a system to a supersymmetric environment. We comment on resulting peculiar self-couplings for the gauge sector, as well as on background contribution for gaugino masses. Furthermore, a non-polynomial generalization is presented.
We consider the one-loop renormalization of QED in curved space-time with additional Lorentz and/or CPT breaking terms. The renormalization group equations in the vacuum sector are derived. In the special case of Minkowski metric and with constant Lorentz and CPT breaking terms these equations reduce to the ones obtained earlier by other authors. The necessary form of the vacuum counterterms indicate possible violations of the space or time homogeneity or space isotropy in the gravitational phenomena. However, the necessity of the phenomenologically most interesting terms such as linear in the…
We consider the Lorentz-violating extended QED involving all nonminimal dimension-5 additive CPT-odd terms. For this theory, we investigate the possibility of generating the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term of the first order in any of these nonminimal couplings. This term is demonstrated to vanish in certain regularization schemes. We also study the question of higher-derivative divergent contributions and demonstrate that they can be eliminated by considering a given proportionality between the coefficients.
The gauge-invariant Chern-Simons-type Lorentz- and CPT-breaking term is here re-assessed and issues like causality, unitarity, spontaneous gauge-symmetry breaking are investigated. Moreover, we obtain a minimal extension of such a system to a supersymmetric environment. We comment on resulting peculiar self-couplings for the gauge sector, as well as on background contribution for gaugino masses.
Using the Fock-Schwinger proper time method, we calculate the induced Chern-Simons term arising from the Lorentz- and CPT-violating sector of quantum electrodynamics with a $b_μ\barψγ^μγ_5 ψ$ term. Our result to all orders in $b$ coincides with a recent linear-in-$b$ calculation by Chaichian et al. [hep-th/0010129 v2]. The coincidence was pointed out by Chung [Phys. Lett. {\bf B461} (1999) 138] and Pérez-Victoria [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83} (1999) 2518] in the standard Feynman diagram calculation with the nonperturbative-in-$b$ propagator.
We show that the ambiguity for the Chern-Simons-like term induced from quantum correction in the extended QED should have nothing to do with the approximation on the exact fermionic propagator, contradictory to the claim in Ref.[19]. Further, we investigate the induced Chern-Simons-like term using the original 't Hooft-Veltman dimensional regularization and reproduce the result obtained by gauge symmetry analysis. This fact demonstrates that the origin of the ambiguity should lie in different choices on regularization schemes.
We have studied BPS vortices in a CPT-odd and Lorentz-violating Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs (MCSH) electrodynamics attained from the dimensional reduction of the Carroll-Field-Jackiw-Higgs model. The Lorentz-violating parameter induces a pronounced behavior at origin (for the magnetic/electric fields and energy density) which is absent in the MCSH vortices. For some combination of the Lorentz-violating coefficients there always exist a sufficiently large winding number $n_{0}$ such that for all $% |n|\geq |n_{0}|$ the magnetic field flips its signal, yielding two well defined regions with oppos…
In this paper, we study a CPT-even Lorentz-breaking extension of the scalar QED. For this theory, we calculate the one-loop lower-order contributions in the Lorentz-violating parameters to the two-point functions of scalar and gauge fields. We found that the two background tensors, coming from the two sectors (scalar and gauge) are mixed in the one-loop corrections both in finite and divergent parts. This shows that these two Lorentz-breaking terms cannot be studied in an isolated form. Besides, the results in the gauge sector are confirmed to be transversal.
Taking as starting point a Lorentz and CPT non-invariant Chern-Simons-like model defined in 1+3 dimensions, we proceed realizing its dimensional reduction to D=1+2. One then obtains a new planar model, composed by the Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) sector, a Klein-Gordon massless scalar field, and a coupling term that mixes the gauge field to the external vector, $v^μ$. In spite of breaking Lorentz invariance in the particle frame, this model may preserve the CPT symmetry for a single particular choice of $v^μ$. Analyzing the dispersion relations, one verifies that the reduced model exhibits stabi…
We examine the nonperturbative structure of the radiatively induced Chern-Simons term in a Lorentz- and CPT-violating modification of QED. Although the coefficient of the induced Chern-Simons term is in general undetermined, the nonperturbative theory appears to generate a definite value. However, the CPT-even radiative corrections in this same formulation of the theory generally break gauge invariance. We show that gauge invariance may yet be preserved through the use of a Pauli-Villars regulator, and, contrary to earlier expectations, this regulator does not necessarily give rise to a vanish…
We consider QED in a constant axial vector background (Æther). Further Lorentz invariance violations (LIV) might occur owing to radiative corrections. The phenomenology of this model is studied, clarifying issues related to the various regularizations employed, with a particular emphasis on the induced photon mass. To this concern, it is shown that in the presence of LIV dimensional regularization may produce a radiatively induced finite photon mass. The possible physical role of the large momentum cutoff is elucidated and the finite temperature radiative corrections are evaluated. Finally, va…
We consider four-dimensional chiral gauge theories defined over a spacetime manifold with topology $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$ and periodic boundary conditions over the compact dimension. The effective gauge-field action is calculated for Abelian $U(1)$ gauge fields $A_μ(x)$ which depend on all four spacetime coordinates (including the coordinate $x^{4}\in S^1$ of the compact dimension) and have vanishing components $A_{4}(x)$ (implying trivial holonomies in the 4-direction). Our calculation shows that the effective gauge-field action contains a local Chern-Simons-like term which violates Lorent…
The renormalization of quantum field theories usually assumes Lorentz and gauge symmetries, besides the general restrictions imposed by unitarity and causality. However, the set of renormalizable theories can be enlarged by relaxing some of these assumptions. In this work, we consider the particular case of a CPT-preserving but Lorentz-breaking extension of scalar QED. For this theory, we calculate the one-loop radiative corrections to the three- and four-point scalar-vector vertex functions, at the lowest order in the Lorentz violation parameters; and we explicitly verify that the resulting l…
By the thermofield dynamics (TFD) formalism we obtain the energy-momentum tensor for the Electromagnetism with Lorentz Breaking Even term of the Standard Model Extended (SME) Sector in a topology $S^{1}\times S^{1}\times R^{2}$. We carry out the compactification by a generalized TFD-Bogoliubov transformation that is used to define a renormalized energy-momentum tensor, and the Casimir energy and pressure at finite temperature are then derived. A comparative analysis with the electromagnetic case is developed, and we remark the influence of the background in the traditional Casimir effect.
We discuss the regularization and renormalization of QED with Lorentz and CPT violation, and argue that the coefficient of the Chern-Simons term is an independent parameter not determined by gauge invariance. We also study these issues in a model with spontaneous breaking of Lorentz and CPT symmetries and find an explicit relation with the ABJ anomaly. This explains the observed convergence of the induced Chern-Simons term.
In this work, we study the radiative generation of the CPT-odd Lorentz-violating Chern-Simons term, arising from massless fermions. For this, we calculate the vacuum polarization tensor using the 't Hooft-Veltman regularization scheme, in which the result obtained for the coefficient of the Chern-Simons term is $(k_{AF})_μ=-\frac{e^2}{4π^2}\,b_μ$. This result leads us precisely to the same conductivity found in Weyl semimetals, i.e., the 't Hooft-Veltman regularization scheme is the correct one to be used in this context. We also discuss the temperature dependence of $(k_{AF})_μ$, in which at …
In this paper, we describe the quantum electrodynamics added by Lorentz-violating CPT-even terms in the context of the standard model extension. We focus our attention on the fermion sector, represented by the CPT-even symmetric Lorentz-breaking tensor $c_{μν}$. We adopt a generic form that parametrizes the components of $c_{μν}$ in terms of one four-vector, namely, $c_{μν}=u_μu_ν- ζ\frac{u^2}{4}g_{μν}$. We then generate perturbatively, up to the third order in this tensor, the aether-like term for the gauge field. Finally, we discuss the renormalization scheme for the gauge propagator, by tak…
We investigate the breakdown of Lorentz symmetry in QED by a CPT violating interaction term consisting of the coupling of an axial fermion current with a constant vector field $b$, in the framework of algebraic renormalization -- a regularization-independent method. We show, to all orders in perturbation theory, that a CPT-odd and Lorentz violating Chern-Simons-like term, definitively, is not radiatively induced by the axial coupling of the fermions with the constant vector $b$.
We construct the inequivalent irreducible representations (IIR's) of the CPT groups of the Dirac field operator \hatψ and the electromagnetic quantum potential \hat{A}_μ. The results are valid both for free and interacting (QED) fields. Also, and for the sake of completeness, we construct the IIR's of the CPT group of the Dirac equation.
A possibility is discussed that new nontrivial Chern-Simons like terms may be generated in (3+1)--dimensional QED Lagrangian, when induced by quark loops interacting with a non-abelian background field in an SU(2) model of QCD.
We rediscuss the controversy on a possible Chern-Simons like term generated through radiative corrections in QED with a CPT violating term. We analyse some consequences of the division of the Lagrangian density between "free part" and "interaction part". We also emphasize the fact that any absence of an {\sl a priori} divergence should be explained by some symmetry or some non-renormalisation theorem and show that the so-called "unambiguous result" based upon "maximal SO(3) residual symmetry " does not offer a solution.
We investigate the zero temperature chiral phase transition in (2+1)-dimensional QED in the presence of a Chern-Simons term, changing the number of fermion flavors. In the symmetric phase, there are no light degrees of freedom even at the critical point. Unlike the case without a Chern-Simons term, the phase transition is first-order.
We show that, at one loop, the magnetic mass vanishes at finite temperature in QED in any dimension. In QED$_{3}$, even the zero temperature part can be regularized to zero. We calculate the two loop contributions to the magnetic mass in QED$_{3}$ with a Chern-Simons term and show that it vanishes. We give a simple proof which shows that the magnetic mass vanishes to all orders at finite temperature in this theory. This proof also holds for QED in any dimension.
We consider one-loop radiative corrections from Lorentz- and CPT- violating extended QED to address the specific problem of finding explicitly an effective action describing amplitude of photon triple splitting. We show that it is not possible to find a nonzero photon triple splitting effective action, at least by using the derivative expansion method (at zero external momenta), up to leading order in the Lorentz- and CPT- violating parameter.
In the present work, we study different aspects of Lorentz and CPT symmetry violation in extended massless QED. By following the observation that the 2+1 dimensional Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory can be originated from the 3+1 dimensional Chern-Simons-like action, we also focus on the fermion sector to relate the 3+1 dimensional extended massless QED to 2+1 dimensional massive QED. We take advantage of this to state that the Chern-Simons-like action in extended massless QED can be induced with its coefficient being well defined and finite just as its 2+1 counterpart. We make use of three differe…
The mechanism of dimensional transmutation is discussed in the context of Maxwell-Chern-Simons scalar QED. The method used is non-perturbative. The effective potential describes a broken symmetry state. It is found that the symmetry breaking vacuum is more stable when the Chern-Simons mass is different from zero. In this work we investigate the radiatively induced Chern-Simons-like terms in four-dimensions at zero and finite temperature. We use the approach of rationalizing the fermion propagator up to the leading order in the CPT-violating coupling $b_μ$. In this approach, we have shown that although the coefficient of Chern-Simons term can be found unambiguously in different regularization schemes at zero or finite temperature, it remains undetermined. We observe a correspondence among results obtained at finite and zero temperature.
The low-energy electron-electron scattering potential is derived and discussed for the Maxwell-Chern-Simons model coupled to QED_3 with spontaneous symmetry breaking. One shows that the Higgs mechanism might favour electron-electron bound states.
In this paper we evaluate the induced Lorentz and CPT violating Chern-Simons term in the QED action at finite temperature. We do this using the method of derivative expansion of fermion determinants. Also, we use the imaginary-time formalism to calculate the temperature dependence of the Chern-Simons term
We analyse the recent controversy on a possible Chern-Simons like term generated through radiative corrections in QED with a CPT violating term : we prove that, if the theory is correctly defined through Ward identities and normalisation conditions, no Chern-Simons term appears, without any ambiguity. This is related to the fact that such a term is a kind of minor modification of the gauge fixing term, and then no renormalised. The past year literature on that subject is discussed, and we insist on the fact that any absence of an {\sl a priori} divergence should be explained by some symmetry o…
We investigate the effects of the Chern-Simons coupling on the high energy behavior in the $(2+1)$-dimensional Chern-Simons QED with a four-Fermi interaction. Using the $1/N$ expansion we discuss the Chern-Simons effects on the critical four-Fermi coupling at $O(1/N)$ and the $β$ function around it. High-energy behavior of Green's functions is also discussed. By explicit calculation, we find that the radiative correction to the Chern-Simons coupling vanishes at $O(1/N)$ in the broken phase of the dynamical parity symmetry. We argue that no radiative corrections to the Chern-Simons term arise a…
We apply the self consistency method for determining critical exponents to a model with a four fermi interaction coupled to QED and compute various gauge independent exponents in arbitrary dimensions in the large $N$ expansion at $O(1/N)$. The formalism is developed to include a Chern Simons term in three dimensions and the effect such a term has on the exponents is deduced.
We present two compact derivations of the correct definition of the Chern-Simons term in the topologically non trivial context of thermal $QED_3$. One is based on a transgression descent from a D=4 background connection, the other on embedding the abelian model in SU(2). The results agree with earlier cohomology conclusions and can be also used to justify a recent simple heuristic approach. The correction to the naive Chern-Simons term, and its behavior under large gauge transformations are displayed.
We investigate an alternative CPT-odd Lorentz-breaking QED which includes the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term of the Standard Model Extension (SME), writing the gauge sector in the action in a Palatini-like form, in which the vectorial field and the field-strength tensor are treated as independent entities. Interestingly, this naturally induces a Lorentz-violating mass term in the classical action. We study physical consistency aspects of the model both at classical and quantum levels.
Lorentz and CPT violating QED with massless fermions at finite temperature is studied. We show that there is no ambiguity in the induced coefficient of the Chern-Simons-like term that defines the so-called Carroll-Field-Jackiw model at high temperature. We also show that this system constitutes an example where the breaking of CPT and Lorentz symmetries is more severe at high temperature than in the zero temperature case thus precluding any naive expectations of Lorentz symmetry restoration.
In this paper, we describe the generation of the CPT-even, aether-like terms via the new CPT-even magnetic-like coupling. We carry out a study the loop corrections generated by this coupling. Previous investigations has been initiated on this issue and we have extended them to studying of higher-point functions, of quantum corrections to vertices of the interaction and to two-point function of the spinor field.
We study a class of generalized Abelian gauge field theories where CPT symmetry is violated by a Chern-Simons-like term which selects a preferred direction in spacetime. Such Chern-Simons-like terms may either emerge as part of the low-energy effective action of a more fundamental theory or be produced by chiral anomalies over a nonsimply connected spacetime manifold. Specifically, we investigate the issues of unitarity and causality. We find that the behaviour of these gauge field theories depends on whether the preferred direction is spacelike or timelike. For a purely spacelike preferred di…
We extend the bosonization of $2+1$ - dimensional QED with one fermionic flavor performed previously to the case of QED with an induced Chern - Simons term. The coefficient of this term is quantized: $e^2n/8π$, $n\in {\bf Z}$. The fermion operators are constructed in terms of the bosonic fields $A_i$ and $E_i$. The construction is similar to that in the $n=0$ case. The resulting bosonic theory is Lorentz invariant in the continuum limit and has Maxwell's equations as its equations of motion. The algebra of bilinears exhibits nontrivial operatorial mixing with lower dimensional operators, which…
This paper was originally designated as Comment to the paper by R. Jackiw and V. Alan Kostelecky (hep-ph/9901358). We provide an example of the fermionic system, the superfluid 3He-A, in which the CPT-odd Chern-Simons terms in the effective action are unambiguously induced by chiral fermions. In this system the Lorentz and gauge invariances both are violated at high energy, but the behavior of the system beyond the cut-off is known. This allows us to construct the CPT-odd action, which combines the conventional 3+1 Chern-Simons term and the mixed axial-gravitational Chern-Simons term discussed…
The noncommutative (NC) massive quantum electrodynamics in $2+1$ dimensions is considered. We show explicitly that the one-loop effective action arising from the integrating out the fermionic fields leads to the ordinary NC Chern-Simons and NC Maxwell action at the long wavelength limit (large fermion mass). In the next to leading order, the higher-derivative contributions to NC Chern-Simons are obtained. Moreover, the gauge invariance of the outcome action is carefully discussed. We then consider the higher-derivative modification into the pure NC Chern-Simons Lagrangian density and evaluate …
An effective model for QED with the addition of a nonminimal coupling with a chiral character is investigated. This term, which is proportional to a fixed 4-vector $b_μ$, violates Lorentz symmetry and may originate a CPT-even Lorentz breaking term in the photon sector. It is shown that this Lorentz breaking CPT-even term is generated and that,in addition, the chiral nonminimal coupling requires this term is present from the beginning. The nonrenormalizability of the model is invoked in the discussion of this fact and the result is confronted with the one from a model with a Lorentz-violating n…
The electrodynamics with a Chern-Simons term $p_μA_ν\widetilde{F}^{μν}$ violates Lorentz and $CPT$ symmetries with a non-vanishing $p_μ$. For a fixed vector $p_μ$, in this paper we point out that the energy-momentum tensor of this theory coupled to the gravity minimally is symmetric but not divergence free, which consequently makes the gravitational field equation inconsistent. To preserve the consistency, we introduce a Chern-Simons term in the gravity sector with the coefficient determined by the Lorentz and $CPT$ violating term in the electromagnetic field. Further we study the phenomenolog…
In this paper, the induced Chern-Simons like action for a system of fermions interacting with a gauge field in (3 +1) dimensions is calculated in the presence of a background field that breaks the Lorentz and CPT symmetries. The main result of this work corresponds to the obtation of a usual Chern-Simons-type action in four-dimensional spacetime resulting from the addition to the conventional QED Lagrangian of a term with a background field that breaks the Lorentz symmetry of the Lagrangian gauge theory. It is pointed out that the proportionality constant in that term depends heavily on the re…
Modified theories of electrodynamics that include violations of Lorentz symmetry often allow for the possibility of vacuum Cerenkov radiation. This phenomenon has previously been studied in a number of Lorentz-violating theories, but none of the methods that have previously been developed are sufficient to study a theory with a timelike Chern-Simons term $k_{AF}$, because such a term may generate exponentially growing solutions to the field equations. Searching for vacuum Cerenkov radiation in a theory with a purely timelike Chern-Simons term using only elementary methods, we find that, despit…
The spontaneous magnetization in Chern-Simons QED_3 is discussed in a finite temperature system. The thermodynamical potential is analyzed within the weak field approximation and in the fermion massless limit. We find that there is a linear term with respect to the magnetic field with a negative coefficient at any finite temperature. This implies that the spontaneous magnetic field does not vanish even at high temperature. In addition, we examine the photon spectrum in the system. We find that the bare Chern-Simons coefficient is cancelled by the radiative effects. The photons then become topo…
We obtain the induced Lorentz- and CPT-violating term in QED at finite temperature using imaginary-time formalism and dimensional regularization. Its form resembles a Chern-Simons-like structure, but, unexpectedly, it does not depend on the temporal component of the fixed $b_μ$ constant vector that is coupled to the axial current. Nevertheless Ward identities are respected and its coefficient vanishes at T=0, consistently with previous computations with the same regularization procedure, and it is a non-trivial function of temperature. We argue that at finite $T$ a Chern-Simons-like Lorentz- a…
