The size Ramsey number $\hat{r}(F)$ of a graph $F$ is the smallest integer $m$ such that there exists a graph $G$ on $m$ edges with the property that any colouring of the edges of $G$ with two colours yields a monochromatic copy of $F$. In 1983, Beck provided a beautiful argument that shows that $\hat{r}(P_n)$ is linear, solving a problem of Erdős. In this short note, we provide an alternative but elementary proof of this fact that actually gives a better bound, namely, $\hat{r}(P_n) < 137n$ for $n$ sufficiently large.
The $s$-colour size-Ramsey number of a hypergraph $H$ is the minimum number of edges in a hypergraph $G$ whose every $s$-edge-colouring contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. We show that the $s$-colour size-Ramsey number of the $t$-power of the $r$-uniform tight path on $n$ vertices is linear in $n$, for every fixed $r, s, t$, thus answering a question of Dudek, La Fleur, Mubayi, and Rödl (2017). In fact, we prove a stronger result that allows us to deduce that powers of bounded degree hypergraph trees and powers of `long subdivisions' of bounded degree hypergraphs have size-Ramsey numbers tha…
The Ramsey number $R_X(p,q)$ for a class of graphs $X$ is the minimum $n$ such that every graph in $X$ with at least $n$ vertices has either a clique of size $p$ or an independent set of size $q$. We say that Ramsey numbers are linear in $X$ if there is a constant $k$ such that $R_{X}(p,q) \leq k(p+q)$ for all $p,q$. In the present paper we conjecture that if $X$ is a hereditary class defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs, then Ramsey numbers are linear in $X$ if and only if $X$ excludes a forest, a disjoint union of cliques and their complements. We prove the "only if" part of …
The size-Ramsey number $\hat{R}(F,r)$ of a graph $F$ is the smallest integer $m$ such that there exists a graph $G$ on $m$ edges with the property that any colouring of the edges of $G$ with $r$ colours yields a monochromatic copy of $F$. In this short note, we give an alternative proof of the recent result of Krivelevich that $\hat{R}(P_n,r) = O((\log r)r^2 n)$. This upper bound is nearly optimal, since it is also known that $\hat{R}(P_n,r) = Ω(r^2 n)$.
We give asymptotically optimal constructions in generalized Ramsey theory using results about conflict-free hypergraph matchings. For example, we present an edge-coloring of $K_{n,n}$ with $2n/3 + o(n)$ colors such that each $4$-cycle receives at least three colors on its edges. This answers a question of Axenovich, Füredi and the second author (On generalized Ramsey theory: the bipartite case, J. Combin. Theory Ser B 79 (2000), 66--86). We also exhibit an edge-coloring of $K_n$ with $5n/6+o(n)$ colors that assigns each copy of $K_4$ at least five colors. This gives an alternative very short s…
The classical result in the theory of random graphs, proved by Erdos and Renyi in 1960, concerns the threshold for the appearance of the giant component in the random graph process. We consider a variant of this problem, with a Ramsey flavor. Now, each random edge that arrives in the sequence of rounds must be colored with one of R colors. The goal can be either to create a giant component in every color class, or alternatively, to avoid it in every color. One can analyze the offline or online setting for this problem. In this paper, we consider all these variants and provide nontrivial upper …
For given graphs $G_1,\ldots,G_k$, the size-Ramsey number $\hat{R}(G_1,\ldots,G_k)$ is the smallest integer $m$ for which there exists a graph $H$ on $m$ edges such that in every $k$-edge coloring of $H$ with colors $1,\ldots,k$, $ H $ contains a monochromatic copy of $G_i$ of color $i$ for some $1\leq i\leq k$. We denote $\hat{R}(G_1,\ldots,G_k)$ by $\hat{R}_{k}(G)$ when $G_1=\cdots=G_k=G$. Haxell, Kohayakawa and Łuczak showed that the size Ramsey number of a cycle $C_n$ is linear in $n$ i.e. $\hat{R}_{k}(C_{n})\leq c_k n$ for some constant $c_k$. Their proof, is based on the regularity lemma…
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, we investigate for which functions $p=p(n)$ the random graph $G_{n,p}$ (the binomial random graph on $n$ vertices with edge probability $p$) satisfies with probability $1-o(1)$ that every red-blue-coloring of its edges contains a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$. We prove a general upper bound on the threshold for this property under the assumption that the denser of the two graphs satisfies a certain balancedness condition. Our result partially confirms a conjecture by the first author and Kreuter, and together with earlier lower bound results establishes th…
Given a positive integer $ r $, the $ r $-color size-Ramsey number of a graph $ H $, denoted by $ \hat{R}(H, r) $, is the smallest integer $ m $ for which there exists a graph $ G $ with $ m $ edges such that, in any edge coloring of $ G $ with $ r $ colors, $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $ H $. Haxell, Kohayakawa and Łuczak showed that the size-Ramsey number of a cycle $ C_n $ is linear in $ n $ i.e. $ \hat{R}(C_n, r) \leq c_rn $, for some constant $ c_r $. Their proof, however, is based on the Szemerédi's regularity lemma and so no specific constant $ c_r $ is known. Javadi, Khoeini, O…
Let U_q be the quantum group associated to a Lie algebra g of rank n. The negative part U^- of U has a canonical basis B with favourable properties, introduced by Kashiwara and Lusztig. The approaches of Kashiwara and Lusztig lead to a set of alternative parametrizations of the canonical basis, one for each reduced expression for the longest word in the Weyl group of g. We show that if g is of type A_4 there are close relationships between the Lusztig cones, canonical basis elements and the regions of linearity of reparametrization functions arising from the above parametrizations. A graph can…
We give an alternative proof of W. T. Gowers' theorem on block bases by reducing it to a discrete analogue on specific countable nets. We also give a Ramsey type result on k-tuples of block sequences in a normed linear space with a Schauder basis.
In this paper, we introduce some reduction processes on graphs which preserve the regularity of related edge ideals. As a consequence, an alternative proof for the theorem of R. Fröberg on linearity of resolution of edge ideal of graphs is given.
We prove an asymptotically tight lower bound on the average size of independent sets in a triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $d$, showing that an independent set drawn uniformly at random from such a graph has expected size at least $(1+o_d(1)) \frac{\log d}{d}n$. This gives an alternative proof of Shearer's upper bound on the Ramsey number $R(3,k)$. We then prove that the total number of independent sets in a triangle-free graph with maximum degree $d$ is at least $\exp \left[\left(\frac{1}{2}+o_d(1) \right) \frac{\log^2 d}{d}n \right]$. The constant $1/2$ in the exponent…
For given integers $k$ and $r$, the Folkman number $f(k;r)$ is the smallest number of vertices in a graph $G$ which contains no clique on $k+1$ vertices, yet for every partition of its edges into $r$ parts, some part contains a clique of order $k$. The existence (finiteness) of Folkman numbers was established by Folkman (1970) for $r=2$ and by Nešetřil and Rödl (1976) for arbitrary $r$, but these proofs led to very weak upper bounds on $f(k;r)$. Recently, Conlon and Gowers and independently the authors obtained a doubly exponential bound on $f(k;2)$. Here, we establish a further improvement by…
The celebrated Erdős--Stone--Simonovits theorem characterizes the asymptotic maximum edge density in $\mathcal{F}$-free graphs as $1 - 1/(χ(\mathcal{F})-1) + o(1)$, where $χ(\mathcal{F})$ is the minimum chromatic number of a graph in $\mathcal{F}$. In Examples 25 and 31 of [L. N. Coregliano and A. A. Razborov. Semantic limits of dense combinatorial objects. Uspekhi Mat. Nauk, 75(4(454)):45-152, 2020], it was shown that this result can be extended to the general setting of graphs with extra structure: the maximum asymptotic density of a graph with extra structure without some induced subgraphs …
