We show that a 1D quantum wire with $23$ channels of interacting fermions has a perfect metal phase in which all weak perturbations that could destabilize this phase are irrelevant. Consequently, weak disorder does not localize it, a weak periodic potential does not open a gap, and contact with a superconductor also fails to open a gap. Similar phases occur for $N \geq 24$ channels of fermions, except for $N=25$, and for $8k$ channels of interacting bosons, with $k\geq 3$. Arrays of perfect metallic wires form higher-dimensional fermionic or bosonic perfect metals, albeit highly-anisotropic ones.
We present a study of Hall transport in semi-Dirac critical phases. The construction is based on a covariant formulation of relativistic systems with spatial anisotropy. Geometric data together with external electromagnetic fields is used to devise an expansion procedure that leads to a low-energy effective action consistent with the discrete $PT$ symmetry that we impose. We use the action to discuss terms contributing to the Hall transport and extract the coefficients. We also discuss the associated scaling symmetry.
We probe the relationship between magnetism and "non-metallic" transport in the magnetically frustrated metal FeCrAs using the low-field Hall effect. We find that the low-field Hall coefficient is dependent on crystal orientation, and exhibits two temperature-induced sign reversals when the current is within the $ab$-plane. We suggest that these observations are due to scattering from magnetic fluctuations that become momentum-dependent near the onset of long-range magnetic order. It seems, however, that this additional spin-fluctuation scattering rides on top of the non-metallic resistivity, …
We show that in anisotropic Fermi liquids where momentum-conserving scattering is much faster than momentum-relaxing scattering processes, local imaging of the electric current flow patterns can cleanly distinguish between ballistic, viscous and ohmic flow patterns simultaneously (using a single image). We propose using multi-layer graphene-based heterostructures, including ABA trilayer graphene, as a natural experimental platform where an anisotropic ballistic-to-viscous crossover may be visible in near-term experiments. Such experiments could lead to more direct measurements of momentum-cons…
We propose a theoretical model of a ferroelectric metal where spontaneous electric polarization coexists with the conducting electrons. In our model we adopt a scenario when conducting electrons interact with two soft transverse optical phonons, generalize it to the case when there is a spontaneous ferroelectric polarization in the system, and show that a linear coupling to the phonons emerges as a result. We find that this coupling results in anisotropic electric transport which has a transverse to the current voltage drop. Importantly, the obtained transverse component of the resistivity has…
RV6Sn6 (R=rare earth) compounds are appealing materials platforms for exploring the interplay between R-site magnetism and nontrivial band topology associated with the nonmagnetic vanadium-based kagome network. Here we present the synthesis and characterization of the kagome metal TbV6Sn6 via single-crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetization, transport, and heat capacity measurements. Magnetization measurements reveal strong, uniaxial magnetic anisotropy rooted in the alignment of Tb3Å moments in the interplane direction below 4.3(2) K. TbV6Sn6 exhibits multiband transport behavior with high mob…
We show that a one-dimensional quantum wire with as few as 2 channels of interacting fermions can host metallic states of matter that are stable against all perturbations up to $q^\text{th}$-order in fermion creation/annihilation operators for any fixed finite $q$. The leading relevant perturbations are thus complicated operators that are expected to modify the physics only at very low energies, below accessible temperatures. The stability of these non-Fermi liquid fixed points is due to strong interactions between the channels, which can (but need not) be chosen to be purely repulsive. Our re…
Using a cluster extension of the dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) we map out the magnetic phase diagram of the anisotropic square lattice Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor intrachain $t$ and interchain $t_{\perp}$ hopping amplitudes at half-filling. A fixed value of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t'=-t_{\perp}/2$ removes the nesting property of the Fermi surface and stabilizes a paramagnetic metal phase in the weak-coupling regime. In the isotropic and moderately anisotropic regions, a growing spin entropy in the metal phase is quenched out at a critical interaction strength by the on…
Anisotropic character of the metal-to-metal transition in Pr4Ni$_3$O$_{10}$
Heavy fermion compounds exhibiting a ferromagnetic quantum critical point have attracted considerable interest. Common to two known cases, i.e., CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ and YbNi$_4$P$_2$, is that the 4f moments reside along chains with a large inter-chain distance, exhibiting strong magnetic anisotropy that was proposed to be vital for the ferromagnetic quantum criticality. Here we report an angle-resolved photoemission study on CeRh6Ge4, where we observe sharp momentum-dependent 4f bands and clear bending of the conduction bands near the Fermi level, indicating considerable hybridization between condu…

Pressure evolution of the superconducting kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is studied with single-crystal x-ray diffraction and density-functional band-structure calculations. A highly anisotropic compression observed up to 5 GPa is ascribed to the fast shrinkage of the Cs-Sb distances and suppression of Cs rattling motion. This prevents Sb displacements required to stabilize the three-dimensional charge-density-wave (CDW) order and elucidates the disappearance of the CDW already at 2 GPa despite only minor changes in the electronic structure of the normal state. At higher pressures, vanadium bands …
Block spin magnetism and metal-insulator transition in a two-dimensional Hubbard model with perfect vacancy superstructure
