We investigate the radial dependence of the spectral break separating the inertial from the dissipation range in power density spectra of interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations, between $0.42$ and $5.3$ AU, during radial alignments between MESSENGER and WIND for the inner heliosphere and between WIND and ULYSSES for the outer heliosphere. We found that the spectral break moves to higher and higher frequencies as the heliocentric distance decreases. The radial dependence of the corresponding wavenumber is of the kind $κ_b\sim R^{-1.08}$ in good agreement with that of the wavenumber derived from the linear resonance condition for proton cyclotron damping. These results support conclusions from previous studies which suggest that a cyclotron-resonant dissipation mechanism must participate into the spectral cascade together with other possible kinetic noncyclotron-resonant mechanisms.
We consider the radial evolution of perpendicular ion heating due to the violation of magnetic moment conservation caused by Alfven and kinetic Alfven wave turbulence. This process, referred to as stochastic heating, can be quantified by the ratio between the average velocity fluctuations at the ion gyroradius and the perpendicular ion thermal speed $ε\equiv δv / v_{t\perp}$. Using 17 years of Helios observations, we constrain how much energy could be dissipated by this mechanism between 0.29 and 0.98 au. We find that stochastic heating likely operates throughout the entire inner heliosphere, …

We study the radial evolution of intermittency of density fluctuations in the fast solar wind. The study is performed analyzing the plasma density measurements provided by Helios 2 in the inner heliosphere between $0.3$ and $0.9$ AU. The analysis is carried out by means of a complete set of diagnostic tools, including the flatness factor at different time scales to estimate intermittency, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to estimate the degree of intermittency, and the Fourier transform to estimate the power spectral densities of these fluctuations. Density fluctuations within fast wind are rather …
Small-scale magnetic flux ropes (SFRs), in the solar wind, have been studied for decades. Statistical analysis utilizing various in situ spacecraft measurements is the main observational approach which helps investigate the generation and evolution of these small-scale structures. Based on the Grad-Shafranov (GS) reconstruction technique, we use the automated detection algorithm to build the databases of these small-scale structures via various spacecraft measurements at different heliocentric distances. We present the SFR properties including the magnetic field and plasma parameters at differ…
We utilize observations from the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) to study the radial evolution of the solar wind in the inner heliosphere. We analyze electron velocity distribution functions observed by the Solar Wind Electrons, Alphas, and Protons suite to estimate the coronal electron temperature and the local electric potential in the solar wind. From the latter value and the local flow speed, we compute the asymptotic solar wind speed. We group the PSP observations by asymptotic speed, and characterize the radial evolution of the wind speed, electron temperature, and electric potential within eac…
In this study we examine the radial dependence of the inertial and dissipation range indices, as well as the spectral break separating the inertial and dissipation range in power density spectra of interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations using {\it Parker Solar Probe} data from the fifth solar encounter between $\sim$0.1 and $\sim$0.7 au. The derived break wavenumber compares reasonably well with previous estimates at larger radial distances and is consistent with gyro-resonant damping of Alfvénic fluctuations by thermal protons. We find that the inertial scale power law index varies betwee…
We report analysis of sub-Alfvénic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) perturbations in the low-\b{eta} radial-field solar wind using the Parker Solar Probe spacecraft data from 31 October to 12 November 2018. We calculate wave vectors using the singular value decomposition method and separate the MHD perturbations into three types of linear eigenmodes (Alfvén, fast, and slow modes) to explore the properties of the sub-Alfvénic perturbations and the role of compressible perturbations in solar wind heating. The MHD perturbations there show a high degree of Alfvénicity in the radial-field solar wind, with…
We present observations of the power spectral anisotropy in wave-vector space of solar wind turbulence, and study how it evolves in interplanetary space with increasing heliocentric distance. For this purpose we use magnetic field measurements made by the Helios-2 spacecraft at three positions between 0.29 and 0.9 AU. To derive the power spectral density (PSD) in $(k_\parallel, k_\bot)$-space based on single-satellite measurements is a challenging task not yet accomplished previously. Here we derive the spectrum $\rm{PSD}_{\rm{2D}}$($\rm{k}_\parallel$, $\rm{k}_\bot$) from the spatial correlati…
The solar wind transients propagating out in the inner heliosphere can be observed in white-light images from Heliospheric Imager-1 (HI1), an instrument of the Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) on board the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO), from two perspectives. The spatial velocity distribution inside solar wind transients is key to understanding their dynamic evolution processes. We generated a velocity map of transients in 3D space based on 2D white-light images and used it to estimate the expansion rate as well as some kinematic propertie…
Fluctuations of solar wind magnetic field and plasma parameters exhibit a typical turbulence power spectrum with a spectral index ranging between $\sim -5/3$ and $\sim -3/2$. In particular, at $1$ AU, the magnetic field spectrum, observed within fast corotating streams, also shows a clear steepening for frequencies higher than the typical proton scales, of the order of $\sim 3\times10^{-1}$ Hz, and a flattening towards $1/f$ at frequencies lower than $\sim 10^{-3}$ Hz. However, the current literature reports observations of the low-frequency break only for fast streams. Slow streams, as observ…

In this letter we report observations of magnetic switchback (SB) features near 1 au using data from the \emph{Wind} spacecraft. These features appear to be strikingly similar to the ones observed by the Parker Solar Probe mission (PSP) closer to the Sun: namely, one-sided spikes (or enhancements) in the solar-wind bulk speed $V$ that correlate/anti-correlate with the spikes seen in the radial-field component $B_R$. In the solar-wind streams that we analyzed, these specific SB features near 1 au are associated with large-amplitude Alfvénic oscillations that propagate outward from the sun along…
The solar wind, when measured close to 1 au, is found to flow mostly radially outward. There are, however, periods when the flow makes angles up to 15$^\circ$ away from the radial direction, both in the east-west and north-south directions. Stream interaction regions (SIRs) are a common cause of east-west flow deflections. Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) may be associated with non-radial flows in at least two different ways: 1) the deflection of the solar wind in the sheath region, especially close to the magnetic ejecta front boundary, may result in large non-radial flows, 2) the expansion of t…
We develop and apply a bespoke fitting routine to a large volume of solar wind electron distribution data measured by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) over its first five orbits, covering radial distances from 0.13 to 0.5 au. We characterise the radial evolution of the electron core, halo and strahl populations in the slow solar wind during these orbits. The fractional densities of these three electron populations provide evidence for the growth of the combined suprathermal halo and strahl populations from 0.13 to 0.17 au. Moreover, the growth in the halo population is not matched by a decrease of the…
Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observations during its first encounter at 35.7 $R_\odot$ have shown the presence of magnetic field lines which are strongly perturbed to the point that they produce local inversions of the radial magnetic field, known as switchbacks. Their counterparts in the solar wind velocity field are local enhancements in the radial speed, or jets, displaying (in all components) the velocity-magnetic field correlation typical of large amplitude Alfvén waves propagating away from the Sun. Switchbacks and radial jets have previously been observed over a wide range of heliocentric d…
We carry out two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of an ensemble of Alfvénic fluctuations propagating in a structured, expanding solar wind including the presence of fast and slow solar wind streams. Using an appropriate expanding box model, the simulations incorporate the effects of fast-slow stream shear and compression and rarefaction self-consistently. We investigate the radial and longitudinal evolution of the cross-helicity, the total and residual energies and the power spectra of outward and inward Alfvénic fluctuations. The stream interaction is found to strongly affec…
We provide a simple geometric explanation for the source of switchbacks and associated large and one-sided transverse flows in the solar wind observed by Parker Solar Probe. The more radial, Sub-Parker Spiral structure of the heliospheric magnetic field observed previously by Ulysses, ACE, and STEREO is created within rarefaction regions where footpoint motion from the source of fast into slow wind at the Sun creates a magnetic field line connection across solar wind speed shear. Conversely, when foot-points move from the source of slow wind into faster wind, a Super-Parker Spiral field struct…
The origin of switchbacks in the solar wind is discussed in two classes of theory that differ in the location of the source being either in the transition region near the Sun or in the solar wind, itself. The two classes of theory differ in their predictions of the switchback rate as a function of distance from the Sun. To test these theories, one-hour averages of Parker Solar Probe data were summed over orbits three through seven. It is found that: 1. The average switchback rate was independent of distance from the Sun. 2. The average switchback rate increased with solar wind speed. 3. The sw…
We report radial speed evolution of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) detected by the SOHO/LASCO coronagraph, interplanetary scintillation (IPS) at 327 MHz, and in-situ observations. In this study, we analyze solar wind disturbance factor (g-value) data derived from IPS observations during 1997-2009 covering nearly the whole period of Solar Cycle 23. By comparing observations from the SOHO/LASCO, IPS, and in situ, we then identify 39 ICMEs that could be analyzed carefully. Here, we define two speeds V_SOHO and V_bg, which are initial speed of ICME and the speed of the background so…
Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are large-scale eruptions from the Sun into interplanetary space. Despite being major space weather drivers, our knowledge of the CME properties in the inner heliosphere remains constrained by the scarcity of observations at distances other than 1 au. Furthermore, most CMEs are observed in situ by single spacecraft, requiring numerical models to complement the sparse observations available. We aim to assess the ability of the linear force-free spheromak CME model in EUHFORIA to describe the radial evolution of interplanetary CMEs, yielding new context for observat…
Aims: We aim to use the high spatial resolution of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to map the flow pattern of molecular gas near DG Tau and its disk, a young stellar object driving a jet and a molecular outflow. Methods: We use observations from ALMA in the J = 2 - 1 transition of 12CO, 13CO, and C18O to study the Keplerian disk of DG Tau and outflows that may be related to the disk and the jet. Results: We find a new wind component flowing radially at a steep angle (~25 deg from the vertical) above the disk with a velocity of ~ 3.1 km/s. It continues the trend of decre…
We present a novel mechanism for the outward transport of crystalline dust particles: the outward radial drift of pebbles. The dust ring structure is frequently observed in protoplanetary disks. One of the plausible mechanisms of the formation of dust rings is the accumulation of pebbles around the pressure maximum, which is formed by the mass loss due to magnetically driven disk winds. In evolving protoplanetary disks due to magnetically driven disk winds, dust particles can migrate outwardly from the crystallization front to the pressure maximum by radial drift. We found that the outward rad…
Massive stars show a variety of spectral variability: presence of discrete absorption components in UV P-Cygni profiles, optical line profile variability, X-ray variability, radial velocity modulations. Our goal is to study the spectral variability of single OB stars to better understand the relation between photospheric and wind variability. For that, we rely on high spectral resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio optical spectra collected with the spectrograph NARVAL on the Telescope Bernard Lyot at Pic du Midi. We investigate the variability of twelve spectral lines by means of the Temporal…
Recent near-sun solar-wind observations from Parker Solar Probe have found a highly dynamic magnetic environment, permeated by abrupt radial-field reversals, or "switchbacks." We show that many features of the observed turbulence are reproduced by a spectrum of Alfvénic fluctuations advected by a radially expanding flow. Starting from simple superpositions of low-amplitude outward-propagating waves, our expanding-box compressible MHD simulations naturally develop switchbacks because (i) the normalized amplitude of waves grows due to expansion and (ii) fluctuations evolve towards spherical pola…
One of the key challenges in solar and heliospheric physics is to understand the acceleration of the solar wind. As a super-sonic, super-Alfvénic plasma flow, the solar wind carries mass, momentum, energy, and angular momentum from the Sun into interplanetary space. We present a framework based on two-fluid magnetohydrodynamics to estimate the flux of these quantities based on spacecraft data independent of the heliocentric distance of the location of measurement. Applying this method to the Ulysses dataset allows us to study the dependence of these fluxes on heliolatitude and solar cycle. The…

Disc-winds originating from the inner parts of accretion discs are considered as the basic component of magnetically collimated outflows. The only available analytical MHD solutions to describe disc-driven jets are those characterized by the symmetry of radial self-similarity. However, radially self-similar MHD jet models, in general, have three geometrical shortcomings, (i) a singularity at the jet axis, (ii) the necessary assumption of axisymmetry, and (iii) the non-existence of an intrinsic radial scale, i.e. the jets formally extend to radial infinity. Hence, numerical simulations are nece…
We study the evolution of turbulence in the solar wind by solving numerically the full 3D magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations embedded in a radial mean wind. The corresponding equations (expanding box model or EBM) have been considered earlier but never integrated in 3D simulations. Here, we follow the development of turbulence from 0.2 AU up to about 1.5 AU. Starting with isotropic spectra scaling as $k^{-1}$, we observe a steepening toward a $k^{-5/3}$ scaling in the middle of the wavenumber range and formation of spectral anisotropies. The advection of a plasma volume by the expanding sola…
We present anisotropy results for anomalous cosmic-ray (ACR) protons in the energy range $\sim$0.5-35 MeV from Cosmic Ray Subsytem (CRS) data collected during calibration roll maneuvers for the magnetometer instrument when Voyager 2 (V2) was in the inner heliosheath. We use a new technique to derive for the first time the radial component of the anisotropy vector from CRS data. We find that the CRS-derived radial solar wind speeds, when converted from the radial components of the anisotropy vectors via the Compton-Getting (C-G) effect, generally agree with those similarly-derived speeds from t…
We study the anisotropy of II-order structure functions defined in a frame attached to the local mean field in three-dimensional (3D) direct numerical simulations of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, including or not the solar wind expansion. We simulate spacecraft flybys through the numerical domain by taking increments along the radial (wind) direction that forms an angle of $45^o$ with the ambient magnetic field. We find that only when expansion is taken into account, do the synthetic observations match the 3D anisotropy observed in the solar wind, including the change of anisotropy with scal…
We analyse ALMA observations of the SO($J_K=6_5-5_4$) emission of the circumstellar envelope of oxygen-rich AGB star R Dor, probing distances between 20 and 100 au from the star where the nascent wind is building up. We give evidence for the slow wind to host, in addition to a previously observed rotating disc, a radial outflow covering very large solid angles and displaying strong inhomogeneity both in direction and radially: the former takes the form of multiple cores and the latter displays a radial dependence suggesting an episode of enhanced mass loss having occurred a century or so ago.

The massive red supergiant (RSG) W26 in Westerlund 1 is one of a growing number of RSGs shown to have winds that are ionized from the outside in. The fate of this dense wind material is important for models of second generation star formation in massive star clusters. Mackey et al. (2014) showed that external photoionization can stall the wind of RSGs and accumulate mass in a dense static shell. We use 1D R-HD simulations of an externally photoionized wind to predict the Halpha and [NII] emission arising from photoionized winds both with and without a dense shell. We analyse spectra of the Hal…
The observed radial profiles of the X-ray emission from Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe) have been claimed to conflict with the standard one-dimensional (1-D) steady model. However, the 1-D model has not been tested to reproduce both the volume-integrated spectrum and the radial profile of the surface brightness, simultaneously. We revisit the 1-D steady model and apply it to PWNe 3C 58 and G21.5-0.9. We find that the parameters of the pulsar wind, the radius of the termination shock $r_{\rm s}$ and magnetization $σ$, greatly affect both the photon spectrum and radial profile of the emission. We hav…
Non-ideal magnetohydrodynamical effects play a crucial role in determining the mechanism and efficiency of angular momentum transport as well as the level of turbulence in protoplanetary disks (PPDs), which are key to understanding PPD evolution and planet formation. It was shown in our previous work that at 1 AU, the magnetorotational instability (MRI) is completely suppressed when both Ohmic resistivity and ambipolar diffusion (AD) are taken into account, resulting in a laminar flow with accretion driven by magnetocentrifugal wind. In this work, we study the radial dependence of the laminar …
Magnetic fields in the sun's outer atmosphere -- the corona -- control both solar-wind acceleration and the dynamics of solar eruptions. We present the first clear observational evidence of coronal magnetic nulls in off-limb linearly polarized observations of pseudostreamers, taken by the Coronal Multichannel Polarimeter (CoMP) telescope. These nulls represent regions where magnetic reconnection is likely to act as a catalyst for solar activity. CoMP linear-polarization observations also provide an independent, coronal proxy for magnetic expansion into the solar wind, a quantity often used to …
Above the top of the solar corona, the young slow solar wind transitions from low-beta, magnetically structured flow dominated by radial structures, to high-beta, less structured flow dominated by hydrodynamics. This transition, long inferred via theory, is readily apparent in the sky region close to 10 degrees from the Sun, in processed, background-subtracted solar wind images. We present image sequences collected by the STEREO/HI1 instrument in 2008 Dec, covering apparent distances from approximately 4 to 24 degrees from the center of the Sun and spanning this transition in large-scale morph…
We examine the radial evolution of correlation lengths perpendicular (\(λ_C^{\perp}\)) and parallel (\(λ_C^{\parallel}\)) to the magnetic-field direction, computed from solar wind magnetic-field data measured by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) during its first eight orbits, Helios 1, Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), WIND, and Voyager 1 spacecraft. Correlation lengths are grouped by an interval's alignment angle; the angle between the magnetic-field and solar wind velocity vectors (\(Θ_{\rm BV}\)). Parallel and perpendicular angular channels correspond to angles \(0^{\circ}~<~Θ_{\rm BV}~<~40^{\cir…
Wind-driving in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is commonly attributed to a two-step process. First, matter in the stellar atmosphere is levitated by shock waves, induced by stellar pulsation, and second, this matter is accelerated by radiation pressure on dust, resulting in a wind. In dynamical atmosphere and wind models the effects of the stellar pulsation are often simulated by a simplistic prescription at the inner boundary. We test a sample of dynamical models for M-type AGB stars, for which we kept the stellar parameters fixed to values characteristic of a typical Mira variable but v…
A new class of one-dimensional solar wind models is developed within the general polytropic, single-fluid hydrodynamic framework. The particular case of quasi-adiabatic radial expansion with a localized heating source is considered. We consider analytical solutions with continuous Mach number over the entire radial domain while allowing for jumps in the flow velocity, density, and temperature, provided that there exists an external source of energy in the vicinity of the critical point which supports such jumps in physical quantities. This is substantially distinct from both the standard Parke…
We study the anisotropy with respect to the local magnetic field of turbulent magnetic fluctuations at magnetofluid scales in the solar wind. Previous measurements in the fast solar wind obtained axisymmetric anisotropy, despite that the analysis method allows nonaxisymmetric structures. These results are probably contaminated by the wind expansion that introduces another symmetry axis, namely, the radial direction, as indicated by recent numerical simulations. These simulations also show that while the expansion is strong, the principal fluctuations are in the plane perpendicular to the radia…
We present an analytical model to investigate the production of pebbles and their radial transport through a protoplanetary disk (PPD) with magnetically driven winds. While most of the previous analytical studies in this context assume that the radial turbulent coefficient is equal to the vertical dust diffusion coefficient, in the light of the results of recent numerical simulations, we relax this assumption by adopting effective parametrisations of the turbulent coefficients involved in terms of the strength of the magnetic fields driving the wind. Theoretical studies have already pointed ou…
Wood et al suggested that mass-loss rate is a function of X-ray flux ($\dot{M} \propto F_x^{1.34}$) for dwarf stars with $F_x \lesssim F_{x,6} \equiv 10^6$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. However, more active stars do not obey this relation. These authors suggested that the break at $F_{x,6}$ could be caused by significant changes in magnetic field topology that would inhibit stellar wind generation. Here, we investigate this hypothesis by analysing the stars in Wood et al's sample that had their surface magnetic fields reconstructed through Zeeman-Doppler Imaging (ZDI). Although the solar-like outlie…
Radial substructures in circumstellar disks are now routinely observed by ALMA. There is also growing evidence that disk winds drive accretion in such disks. We show through 2D (axisymmetric) simulations that rings and gaps develop naturally in magnetically coupled disk-wind systems on the scale of tens of au, where ambipolar diffusion (AD) is the dominant non-ideal MHD effect. In simulations where the magnetic field and matter are moderately coupled, the disk remains relatively laminar with the radial electric current steepened by AD into a thin layer near the midplane. The toroidal magnetic …
