We calculate the three-loop thermodynamic potential of QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential(s) using the hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) reorganization of finite temperature and density QCD. The resulting analytic thermodynamic potential allows us to compute the pressure, energy density, and entropy density of the quark-gluon plasma. Using these we calculate the trace anomaly, speed of sound, and second-, fourth-, and sixth-order quark number susceptibilities. For all observables considered we find good agreement between our three-loop HTLpt calculations and available lattice data for temperatures above approximately 300 MeV.
In this proceedings we present a state-of-the-art method of calculating thermodynamic potential at finite temperature and finite chemical potential, using Hard Thermal Loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) up to next-to-next-leading-order (NNLO). The resulting thermodynamic potential enables us to evaluate different thermodynamic quantities including pressure and various quark number susceptibilities (QNS). Comparison between our analytic results for those thermodynamic quantities with the available lattice data shows a good agreement.
We present results of a three-loop hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory calculation of the thermodynamical potential of a finite temperature and baryon chemical potential system of quarks and gluons. We compare the resulting pressure and diagonal quark susceptibilities with available lattice data. We find reasonable agreement between our analytic results and lattice data at both zero and finite chemical potential.
The weak-coupling expansion of the QCD free energy is known to order g_s^6log{g_s}, however, the resulting series is poorly convergent at phenomenologically relevant temperatures. In this proceedings, I discuss hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) which is a gauge-invariant reorganization of the perturbative expansion for gauge theories. I review a recent NNLO HTLpt calculation of QCD thermodynamic functions. I show that the NNLO HTLpt results are consistent with lattice data down to temperatures T~2T_c.
We present predictions for the second- and fourth-order curvature coefficients of the QCD phase transition line using the NNLO HTLpt-resummed thermodynamic potential. We present three cases corresponding to (i) $μ_s = μ_l = μ_B/3$, (ii) $μ_s=0$, $μ_l = μ_B/3,$ and (iii) $S = 0$, $Q/B = 0.4$, $μ_l = μ_B/3$. In all three cases, we find excellent agreement with continuum extrapolated lattice QCD results for $κ_2$, given current statistical uncertainties. We also make HTLpt predictions for $κ_4$ in all three cases, finding again excellent agreement with lattice extractions of this coefficient wher…
The resummed thermodynamics of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four space-time dimensions ($\text{SYM}_{4,4}$) has been calculated previously to two loop order within hard thermal loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) using the canonical dimensional regularization (DRG) scheme. Herein, we revisit this calculation using the regularization by dimensional reduction (RDR) scheme. Since the RDR scheme manifestly preserves supersymmetry it is the preferred scheme, however, it is important to assess if and by how much the resummed perturbative results depend on the regularization scheme u…
In this proceedings contribution we present a recent three-loop hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) calculation of the thermodynamic potential for a finite temperature and chemical potential system of quarks and gluons. We compare the resulting pressure, trace anomaly, and diagonal/off-diagonal quark susceptibilities with lattice data. We show that there is good agreement between the three-loop HTLpt analytic result and available lattice data.
Based on the external perturbation that disturbs the system only slightly from its equilibrium position we make the Taylor expansion of the pressure of a quark gas. It turns out that the first term was used in the literature to construct a Hard Thermal Loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) within the variation principle of the lowest order of the thermal mass parameter. Various thermodynamic quantities within the 1-loop HTLpt encountered overcounting of the leading order (LO) contribution and also required a separation scale for soft and hard momenta. Using same variational principle we reconstruct…
We calculate the two-loop pressure of a plasma of quarks and gluons at finite temperature and chemical potential using the hard thermal loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) reorganization of finite temperature/density quantum chromodynamics. The computation utilizes a high temperature expansion through fourth order in the ratio of the chemical potential to temperature. This allows us to reliably access the region of high temperature and small chemical potential. We compare our final result for the two-loop HTLpt pressure at finite temperature and chemical potential with perturbative quantum chromo…
We calculate the thermodynamic functions of pure-glue QCD to three-loop order using the hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) reorganization of finite temperature quantum field theory. We show that at three-loop order hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory is compatible with lattice results for the pressure, energy density, and entropy down to temperatures $T\simeq3\;T_c$. Our results suggest that HTLpt provides a systematic framework that can used to calculate static and dynamic quantities for temperatures relevant at LHC.
The conventional weak-coupling expansion for thermodynamic quantities in hot field theories shows poor convergence unless the coupling constant is tiny. I discuss screened perturbation theory (SPT) which is a way of reorganizing the perturbative expansion for scalar theories %by adding and subtracting a local mass term in the Lagrangian, and hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLPT), which is its generalization to gauge theories. I present results for the pressure to three loops in SPT and to two loops in HTLPT. We compare the latter with three- and four-dimensional lattice simulations of …
The poor convergence of quantum field theory at finite temperature has been one of the main obstacles in the practical applications of thermal QCD for decades. Here we briefly review the progress of hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) in reorganizing the perturbative expansion in order to improve the convergence. The quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillator is used as a simple example to show the breakdown of weak-coupling expansion, and variational perturbation theory is introduced as an effective resummation scheme for divergent weak-coupling expansions. We discuss HTLpt thermodyna…
The hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) framework is used to calculate the thermodynamic functions of a quark-gluon plasma to three-loop order. This is the highest order accessible by finite temperature perturbation theory applied to a non-Abelian gauge theory before the high-temperature infrared catastrophe. All ultraviolet divergences are eliminated by renormalization of the vacuum, the HTL mass parameters, and the strong coupling constant. After choosing a prescription for the mass parameters, the three-loop results for the pressure and trace anomaly are found to be in very good a…
We consider our recently obtained general structure of two point (self-energy and propagator) functions of quarks and gluons in a nontrivial background like a heat bath and an external magnetic field. Based on this, here we have computed free energy and pressure of quarks and gluons for a magnetized hot and dense deconfined QCD matter in weak field approximation. For heat bath we have used hard thermal loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) in presence of finite chemical potential. For weak field approximations we have obtained the pressure of QCD matter, both with and without the high temperature e…
The perturbative series for finite-temperature field theories has very poor convergence properties and one needs a way to reorganize it. In this talk, I review two ways of reorganizing the perturbative series for field theories at finite temperature and chemical potential, namely hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) and dimensional reduction (DR). I will present results for the pressure, trace anomaly, speed of sound and the quark susceptibilities from a 3-loop HTLpt calculation and for the quark susceptibilities using DR at four loops. A careful comparison with available lattice data…
In a previous paper (JHEP {\bf 05} (2014) 27), we calculated the three-loop thermodynamic potential of QCD at finite temperature $T$ and quark chemical potentials $μ_q$ using the hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) reorganization of finite temperature and density QCD. The result allows us to study the thermodynamics of QCD at finite temperature and isospin chemical potential $μ_I$. We calculate the pressure, energy density, and entropy density, the trace anomaly, and the speed of sound at zero and nonzero $μ_I$. The second, fourth, and sixth-order isospin susceptibilities are calcula…
The weak-coupling expansion for thermodynamic quantities in thermal field theories is poorly convergent unless the coupling constant is tiny. We discuss the calculation of the free energy for a hot gas of electrons and photons to three-loop order using hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt). We show that the hard-thermal-loop perturbation reorganization improves the convergence of the successive approximations to the QED free energy at large coupling, e ~ 2. The reorganization is gauge invariant by construction, and due to the cancellations among various contributions, we obtain a compl…
In this Ph.D. thesis, the primary goal is to present a recent investigation of the finite density thermodynamics of hot and dense quark-gluon plasma. As we are interested in a temperature regime, in which naive perturbation theory is known to lose its predictive power, we clearly need to use a refined approach. To this end, we adopt a resummed perturbation theory point of view and employ two different frameworks. We first use hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HLTpt) at leading order to obtain the pressure for nonvanishing quark chemical potentials, and next, inspired by dimensional reduct…
We extend our work on QCD thermodynamics with 2+1 quark flavors at nonzero chemical potential to finer lattices with $N_t=6$. We study the equation of state and other thermodynamic quantities, such as quark number densities and susceptibilities, and compare them with our previous results at $N_t=4$. We also calculate the effects of the addition of the charm and bottom quarks on the equation of state at zero and nonzero chemical potential. These effects are important for cosmological studies of the early Universe.
We compare recent lattice studies of QCD thermodynamics at non-zero quark chemical potential with the thermodynamics of a hadron resonance gas. We argue that for T < Tc the equation of state derived from Monte--Carlo simulations of two flavour QCD at non-zero chemical potential can be well described by a hadron resonance gas when using the same set of approximations as used in current lattice calculations. We estimate the importance of truncation errors arising from the use of a Taylor expansion in terms of the quark chemical potential and examine the influence of unphysically large quark mass…
We have extended the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model for two degenerate flavours to include the isospin chemical potential ($μ_I$). All the diagonal and mixed derivatives of pressure with respect to the quark number (proportional to baryon number) chemical potential ($μ_0$) and isospin chemical potential upto sixth order have been extracted at $μ_0 = μ_I = 0$. These derivatives give the generalized susceptibilities with respect to quark and isospin numbers. Similar estimates for the flavour diagonal and off-diagonal susceptibilities are also presented. Comparison to Lattice QCD (LQCD)…
We derive the nonextensive thermodynamics of an ideal quantum gas composed by bosons and/or fermions with finite chemical potentials. We find agreement with previous works when $μ\le m$, and some inconsistencies are corrected for fermions when $μ> m$. This formalism is then used to study the thermodynamical properties of hadronic systems based on a Hadron Resonance Gas approach. We apply this result to study the protoneutron star stability under several conditions.
We present in this work a generalization of the solution of Gorenstein and Yang to the inconsistency problem of thermodynamics for systems of quasi-particles whose masses depend on both the temperature and the chemical potential. We work out several solutions for an interacting system of quarks and gluons and show that there is only one type of solution that reproduce both perturbative and lattice QCD.
Thermodynamics properties of an interacting system of bosons are considered at finite temperatures and zero chemical potential within the Skyrme-like mean-field model. An interplay between attractive and repulsive interactions is investigated. As a particular example an equilibrium system of pions is discussed. Several modifications of thermodynamic properties in the considered system are found with increasing a strength of attractive forces. Different types of the first order phase transition are classified. Some of these transitions exist also in the Boltzmann approximation. However, effects…
This dissertation is devoted to the study of thermodynamics for quantum gauge theories. The poor convergence of quantum field theory at finite temperature has been the main obstacle in the practical applications of thermal QCD for decades. In this dissertation I apply hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory, which is a gauge-invariant reorganization of the conventional perturbative expansion for quantum gauge theories to the thermodynamics of QED and Yang-Mills theory to three-loop order. For the Abelian case, I present a calculation of the free energy of a hot gas of electrons and photons by ex…
The non extensive thermodynamics of an ideal gas composed by bosons and/or fermions is derived from its partition function for systems with finite chemical potentials. It is shown that the thermodynamical quantities derived in the present work are in agreement with those obtained in previous works when $μ\le m$. However some inconsistencies of previous references are corrected when $μ> m$. A discontinuity in the first derivatives of the partition function and its effects are discussed in detail. We show that at similar conditions, the non extensive statistics provide a harder equation of state…
The QCD transition from a hadronic to a quark-gluon plasma phase is a cross-over at vanishing/small baryo-chemical potential, while at higher chemical potentials it is argued that it becomes of first order, ending with a critical end-point. The present goal is the determination of the critical line and, possibly, the recognition of the critical endpoint. For this purpose, the effective model (Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with Polyakov Loop) with 2+1 flavours is used. In Mean Field Approximation it is possible to obtain all thermodynamic quantities (pressure, entropy, energy and quark density) and …
We present a derivation of an exact high temperature expansion for a one-loop thermodynamic potential $Ω(\tildeμ)$ with complex chemical potential $\tildeμ$. The result is given in terms of a single sum the coefficients of which are analytical functions of $\tildeμ$ consisting of polynomials and polygamma functions, decoupled from the physical expansion parameter $βm$. The analytic structure of the coefficients permits us to explicitly calculate the thermodynamic potential for the imaginary chemical potential and analytically continue the domain to the complex $\tildeμ$ plane. Furthermore, our…
We study QCD thermodynamics in presence of two independent imaginary chemical potentials coupled to two degenerate flavors of staggered quarks. Analytic continuation is used to determine non-linear susceptibilities, to test the Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model below the zero density critical temperature, Tc, and to determine the average phase factor of the fermion determinant. Deviations from HRG predictions, of the order of a few percent, are clearly visible for temperatures T > 0.95 Tc. The determination of non-linear susceptibilities, using different interpolating functions for analytic con…
An effective quasiparticle description of the thermodynamics of deconfined matter, compatible with both finite-temperature lattice data and the perturbative limit, is generalized to finite chemical potential. Within this approach, the available 4-flavor lattice equation of state is extended to finite baryon density, and implications for cold, charge-neutral deconfined matter in beta-equilibrium in compact stars are considered.
Driven by the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the RHIC, researches and discussions on the QCD phase diagram have flourished recently. In order to provide a reference from microscopic transport models, we performed a systematic analysis, using a multiphase transport (AMPT) model for the particle yields and a statistical model (THERMUS) for the thermal fit, for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$=7.7-200 GeV. It is found that at a fixed collision centrality the chemical freeze-out parameter, temperature $T_{\text{ch}}$, increases with collision energy and somehow saturates at certain va…
We study the thermodynamics of the two flavor massless Schwinger model on a torus at a finite chemical potential. We show that thermodynamic quantities only depend on the isospin chemical potential and there are marked deviations from a free fermion theory.
We review the existing weak-coupling results on the thermodynamic potential of deconfined QCD at small and large quark chemical potential and compare with results from lattice gauge theory as well as the exactly solvable case of large-N_f QCD. We also discuss the new analytical results on non-Fermi-liquid effects in entropy and specific heat as well as in dispersion laws of quark quasiparticles at large quark chemical potential.
We present large $N_f$ QCD/QED as a test bed for improved pressure calculations, show how to apply the hints obtained on optimized renormalization scales at large $N_f$ to finite $N_f=2$, and compare the results to recent lattice data.
We explore the quasiparticle model at finite chemical potential related to Ru-Keng Su's distinguished contributions to the topic. Besides, we discuss recent developments in the model, and in particular, one argues that the effective mass of the quasiparticle might attain a specific form as a function of momentum, in addition to its dependence on temperature and chemical potential. Unlike the approaches based on the properties of underlying symmetry or renormalization group, the momentum dependence emerges as a special solution to an integro-differential equation resulting from the underlying t…
Based on the constituent quasiparticle model of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), color quantum path-integral Monte-Carlo (PIMC) calculations of the thermodynamic properties of the QGP are performed. We extend our previous zero chemical potential simulations to the QGP at finite baryon chemical potential. The results indicate that color PIMC can be applied not only above the QCD critical temperature $T_c$ but also below $T_c$. Besides reproducing the lattice equation of state our approach yields also valuable additional insight into the internal structure of the QGP, via the pair distribution func…
We discuss an effective Polyakov loop model for QCD thermodynamics with a chemical potential. Using high temperature expansion techniques the partition sum is mapped exactly onto the partition sum of a flux model. In the flux representation the complex action problem is resolved and a simulation with worm-type algorithms becomes possible also at finite chemical potential.
We study the thermodynamics of the 2+1 dimensional Gross-Neveu model in the presence of a chemical potential by introducing a representation for the canonical partition function which encodes both real and imaginary chemical potential cases. It is pointed out that the latter case probes the thermodynamics of the possible anyon-like excitations in the spectrum. It is also intimately connected to the breaking of the discrete Z-symmetry of a U(1) gauge theory coupled to the Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature, which we interpret as signaling anyon deconfinement. Finally, the chiral properties…

We investigate two-flavour and two-colour QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential in comparison with a corresponding Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model. By minimizing the thermodynamic potential of the system, we confirm that a second order phase transition occurs at a value of the chemical potential equal to half the mass of the chiral Goldstone mode. For chemical potentials beyond this value the scalar diquarks undergo Bose condensation and the diquark condensate is nonzero. We evaluate the behaviour of the chiral condensate, the diquark condensate, the baryon charge density and the masse…
We discuss the isentropic trajectories on the QCD phase diagram in the temperature and the quark chemical potential plane using the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop coupling (PNJL model). We impose a constraint on the strange quark chemical potential so that the strange quark density is zero, which is the case in the ultra relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We compare our numerical results with the truncated estimates by the Taylor expansion in terms of the chemical potential to quantify the reliability of the expansion used in the lattice QCD simulation. We finally discuss the…
We investigate three-colour QCD thermodynamics at finite quark chemical potential. Lattice QCD results are compared with a generalized Nambu Jona-Lasinio model in which quarks couple simultaneously to the chiral condensate and to a background temporal gauge field representing Polyakov loop dynamics. This so-called PNJL model thus includes features of both deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration. The parameters of the Polyakov loop effective potential are fixed in the pure gauge sector. The chiral condensate and the Polyakov loop as functions of temperature and quark chemical potential ar…
We extend the previously obtained results for the thermodynamic potential of hot QCD in the limit of large number of fermions to non-vanishing chemical potential. We give exact results for the thermal pressure in the entire range of temperature and chemical potential for which the presence of a Landau pole is negligible numerically. In addition we compute linear and non-linear quark susceptibilities at zero chemical potential, and the entropy at small temperatures. We compare with the available perturbative results and determine their range of applicability. Our numerical accuracy is sufficien…
We summarize the derivation of the finite temperature, finite chemical potential thermodynamic potential in the bag-model approximation to quantum chromodynamics (QCD) that includes a finite $s$-quark mass in the Feynman diagram contributions for both zero-order and two-loop corrections to the quark interaction. The thermodynamic potential for quarks in QCD is a desired ingredient for computations of the equation of state in the early universe, supernovae, neutron stars, and heavy-ion collisions. The 2-loop contributions are normally divergent and become even more difficult in the limit of fin…
The issue discussed is a thermodynamic version of the Bern-Kosower master amplitude formula, which contains all necessary one-loop Feynman diagrams. It is demonstrated how the master amplitude at finite values of temperature and chemical potential can be formulated within the framework of the world-line formalism. In particular we present an elegant method how to introduce a chemical potential for a loop in the master formula. Various useful integral formulae for the master amplitude are then obtained. The non-analytic property of the master formula is also derived in the zero temperature limi…
The fourth-order correlations of conserved charges, such as the baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness, are studied at finite temperature and nonzero baryon chemical potential in an effective model. It is found that the fourth-order correlations change rapidly and have three extrema during the chiral crossover with the increase of the baryon chemical potential. The absolute values of the extrema approach infinity when the thermodynamical system moves toward the QCD critical point and the fourth-order correlations are divergent at the critical point. The contour plots of the fourth-ord…
Generically, the black brane solution with planar horizons is thermodynamically stable. We find a counter-example to this statement by demonstrating that an anisotropic black brane is unstable. We present a charged black brane solution dual to a spatially anisotropic finite temperature $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills plasma at finite $U(1)$ chemical potential. This static and regular solution is obtained both numerically and analytically. We uncover rich thermodynamic phase structures for this system by considering the cases when the anisotropy constant "a" takes real and imaginary values, re…
