Organic charge transfer salts show a variety of complex phases ranging from antiferromagnetic long-range order, spin liquid, bad metal or even superconductivity. A powerful method to investigate magnetism is spin-polarized inelastic neutron scattering. However, such measurements have often been hindered in the past by the small size of available crystals as well as by the fact that the spin in these materials is distributed over molecular rather than atomic orbitals and good estimates for the magnetic form factors are missing. By considering Wannier functions obtained from density functional theory calculations, we derive magnetic form factors for a number of representative organic molecules. Compared to Cu2+, the form factors |F(q)|2 fall off more rapidly as function of q reflecting the fact that the spin density is very extended in real space. Form factors |F(q)|2 for TMTTF, BEDT-TTF and (BEDT-TTF)2 have anisotropic and nonmonotonic structure.
We theoretically investigate possible photoinduced topological phase transitions in the organic salt $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$, which possesses a pair of inclined massless Dirac-cone bands between the conduction and valence bands under uniaxial pressure. The Floquet analyses of a driven tight-binding model for this material reveal rich photoinduced variations of band structures, Chern numbers, and Hall conductivities under irradiation with elliptically polarized light. The obtained phase diagrams contain a variety of nonequilibrium steady phases, e.g., the Floquet Chern insulator, Floquet semime…
We performed third-order electrical conductivity measurements on the organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ using an ac bridge technique sensitive to nonlinear signals. Third-order conductance $G_3$ is clearly observed even at low electric fields, and interestingly, $G_3$ is critically enhanced above the charge-order transition temperature $T_{\rm CO}=136$~K. The observed frequency dependence of $G_3$ is incompatible with a percolation model, in which a Joule heating in a random resistor network is relevant to the nonlinear conduction. We instead argue the nonlinearity of the relaxation tim…
Motivated by recent experimental suggestions of charge-order-driven ferroelectricity in organic charge-transfer salts, such as $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Cl, we investigate magnetic and charge-ordered phases that emerge in an extended two-orbital Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice at $3/4$ filling. This model takes into account the presence of two organic BEDT-TTF molecules, which form a dimer on each site of the lattice, and includes short-range intramolecular and intermolecular interactions and hoppings. By using variational wave functions and quantum Monte Carlo techniq…
We perform a first principles band calculation for quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductors $β$-(BDA-TTP)$_{2}$I$_{3}$ and $β$-(BDA-TTP)$_{2}$SbF$_{6}$. The first principles band structures between the I$_{3}$ and SbF$_{6}$ salts are apparently different. We construct a tight-binding model for each material which accurately reproduces the first principles band structure. The obtained transfer energies give the differences such as (i) larger dimerization in the I$_{3}$ salt than the SbF$_{6}$ salt, and (ii) different signs and directions of the inter-stacking transfer energies. To decompos…
Pressure-Induced Zero-Gap Semiconducting State in Organic Conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ Salt
(BEDT-TFF)$_2$I$_3$ charge transfer salts are reported to show superconductivity and pressure induced quasi two-dimensional Dirac cones at the Fermi level. By performing state of the art ab initio calculations in the framework of density functional theory, we investigate the structural and electronic properties of the three structural phases $α$, $β$ and $κ$. \edit{We furthermore report about the irreducible representations of the corresponding electronic band structures, symmetry of their crystal structure, and discuss the origin of band crossings. Additionally, we discuss the chemically indu…
By means of full-potential all-electron density-functional theory and many-body perturbation theory, we compute the band alignment at a prototypical hybrid inorganic/organic interface. The electronic properties of a model system built of poly(\emph{para}-phenylene) and \emph{rs}-ZnO are studied in two different geometries, employing several approaches of increasing sophistication. To this extent, we explore models for predicting the level alignment, which are based on the knowledge of the electronic structure of the individual constituents and are commonly used for semiconductor interfaces. Fo…
Quantum chemical calculations have been employed to investigate the solvation of lithium cations in ethylene carbonate/propylene carbonate and propylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate mixed electrolytes. The impact of the presence of the counteranion on the solvation of Li+ in pure propylene carbonate and dimethyl carbonate was also studied. The calculations revealed small free-energy changes for the transitions between different preferred structures in mixed solvents. This implies that transitions between distinct local arrangements can take place in the mixtures. The addition of dimethyl carbo…
Surface-defect passivation is key to achieving high photoluminescence quantum yield in lead halide perovskite nanocrystals. However, in perovskite light-emitting diodes these surface ligands also have to enable balanced charge injection into the nanocrystals to yield high efficiency and operational lifetime. In this respect, alkaline halides have been reported to passivate surface trap states and increase the overall stability of perovskite light emitters. On the one side, the incorporation of alkaline ions into the lead halide perovskite crystal structure is considered to counterbalance catio…
We report the dielectric, magnetic, and ultrasonic properties of a one-dimensional organic salt TTF-QBr$_3$I. These indicate that TTF-QBr$_3$I shows a ferroelectric spin-Peierls (FSP) state in a quantum critical regime. In the FSP state, coupling of charge, spin, and lattice leads to emergent excitation of spin solitons as topological defects. Amazingly, the solitons are highly mobile even at low temperatures, although they are normally stationary because of pinning. Our results suggest that strong quantum fluctuations enhanced near a quantum critical point enable soliton motion governed by at…
Bechgaard salts, (TMTSF)2X (TMTSF = tetramethyl tetraselenafulvalene and X = complex anion), form the most popular series of organic superconductors. In these salts, TMTSF molecules act as super-electron donor and X as acceptor. We computationally examine the electronic structure and properties of X in commonly used (TMTSF)2X (X = NO3, BF4, ClO4, PF6) superconductors and notice that they belong to the class of superhalogens due to their higher vertical detachment energy than halogen anions. This prompted us to choose other superhalogens such as X = BO2, BH4, B2F7, AuF6 and study their (TMTSF)2…
Owing to prospective energy-efficient and environmentally benign applications, organic ferroelectric materials are useful and necessary alternative to inorganic ferroelectrics. Although the first discovered ferroelectric, Rochelle salt, was a salt of an organic compound, organic ferroelectrics have not been as abundant as the inorganic ones. Further, the small polarization values in the organic systems discovered so far have been a demotivating factor for their applications. However, scientific interest and activities surrounding such materials, for the purpose of fundamental understanding and…
We investigate the continuous variation of electronic states from a Fermi liquid to a quantum spin liquid induced by chemical substitution in the organic dimer-Mott system of $κ$-[(BEDSe-TTF)$_x$(BEDT-TTF)$_{1-x}$]$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br. Electrical transport measurements reveal that the mixing of BEDSe-TTF into the BEDT-TTF layers induces a quantum Mott transition around $x$=0.10. Although a charge gap disappears at this point, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements indicate that fermionic low-energy excitations remain in the insulating salts, suggesting that fermionic spin excita…
A combination of magnetic heat capacity measurements versus temperature under multiple fixed external fields using a polycrystalline sample, plus easy and hard axis aligned magnetization versus field measurements using a single crystal of the radical 2-(4,5,6,7-tetrafluorobenzimidazol-2-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-3-oxide-1-oxyl) at multiple fixed temperatures below 0.75 K, confirmed a zero-field Neel temperature of TN(0) = 0.73 K, with extrapolated 0 K critical field parameters of Hc(parallel) = 170 Oe and Hc(perpendicular) = 306 Oe. Assuming the previously determined 1D …
According to Vegard's law, larger radius atoms substitute for smaller atoms in a solid solution would enlarge the lattice parameters. However, by first-principles calculations, we have observed unusual lattice shrinkage when W replaces Ge in rock salt GeTe. We attribute this anomalous contract to the larger electronegativity difference between W and Te than between Ge and Te, which results in shorter W-Te bonds and pronounced local distortion around W dopants. The present work would provide new insight into the lattice parameter determination and a deeper understanding of the structural proper…
Despite of useful applications of Ag, it is hazardous to health and environment and hence early detection is required. Crystal defects influencing optical property is less likely utilized for Ag detection using prevalent UV-Vis technique. Quantum dots (QDs) ZnS prepared by soft chemical route are exploited for the detection of Ag ions in aqueous solution for nM to mM concentrations. UV-Vis and photoluminescence (PL) measurements reveal quantum confinement effect and presence of defects in ZnS nanoparticles (NPs). Controlled synthesis of ZnS NPs allows appearance of defects related peak at 400-…
There is an increasing interest in the amorphous states of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous coordination polymers, which can be produced by pressure-induced amorphization, temperature-induced amorphization, melt-quenching, ball-milling, irradiation, etc. They can exhibit useful physical and chemical properties, distinct from those achievable in the crystalline states, along with greater ease of processing, and intrinsic advantages over crystals and powders, such as high transparency and mechanical robustness. However, these amorphous states are particularly challenging to characteriz…
Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) are promising materials for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) alternatives to silicate-based LEDs due to their tuneable structure and programmability. Yet, the 3D nature of LMOFs creates challenges for stability, optical transparency, and device integration. Metal-organic nanosheets (MONs) potentially overcome these limitations by combining the benefits of MOFs with an atomically thin morphology of large planar dimensions. Here, we report the bottom-up synthesis of atomically thin ZIF-7-III MONs via facile low-energy salt-templating. Employing gue…
The spin-crossover in organometallic molecules constitutes one of the most promising routes towards the realization of molecular spintronic devices. In this article, we explore the hybridization-induced spin-crossover in metal-organic complexes. We propose a minimal many-body model that captures the essence of the spin-state switching in a generic parameter space, thus providing insight into the underlying physics. Combining the model with density functional theory (DFT), we then study the spin-crossover in isomeric structures of Ni-porphyrin (Ni-TPP). We show that metal-ligand charge transfer…
