By means of full-potential all-electron density-functional theory and many-body perturbation theory, we compute the band alignment at a prototypical hybrid inorganic/organic interface. The electronic properties of a model system built of poly(\emph{para}-phenylene) and \emph{rs}-ZnO are studied in two different geometries, employing several approaches of increasing sophistication. To this extent, we explore models for predicting the level alignment, which are based on the knowledge of the electronic structure of the individual constituents and are commonly used for semiconductor interfaces. For their evaluation in the context of hybrid materials, we perform an \textit{ab-initio} study of the entire system, including a quasiparticle description of the electronic structure within the $G_0W_0$ approximation. Based on this, we quantify the impact of structure, charge redistribution, orbital hybridization, and molecular polarization on the band offsets and the alignment type. We highlight not only known limitations of predicting the level alignment at a hybrid inorganic/organic interface by simple models, but also demonstrate how structural details of the interface components impact the results.
Structural relaxations in electronically excited poly(para-phenylene) are studied using many-body perturbation theory and density-functional-theory methods. A sophisticated description of the electron-hole interaction is required to describe the energies of the excitonic states, but we show that the structural relaxations associated with exciton formation can be obtained quite accurately within a constrained density-functional-theory approach. We find that the structural relaxations in the low-energy excitonic states extend over about 8 monomers, leading to an energy reduction of 0.22 eV and a…
Component of photoexcited states with large spatial extent is investigated for optical absorption spectra of the electroluminescent conjugated polymers by using the intermediate exciton theory. We calculate the ratio of oscillator strengths due to long-range excitons with respect to sum of all the oscillator strengths of the absorption as a function of the monomer number. The oscillator strengths of the long-range excitons in poly(para-phenylene) are smaller than those in poly(para-phenylenevinylene), and those of poly(para-phenylenedivinylene) are larger than those in poly(para-phenylenevinyl…
Ring torsion effects on optical excitation properties in poly(para-phenylene) (PPP) and polyaniline (PAN) are investigated by extending the Shimoi-Abe model [Synth. Met. 78, 219 (1996)]. The model is solved by the intermediate exciton formalism. Long-range excitons are characterized, and the long-range component of the oscillator strengths is calculated. We find that ring torsions affect the long-range excitons in PAN more easily than in PPP, due to the larger torsion angle of PAN and the large number of bonds whose hopping integrals are modulated by torsions. Next, ring torsional disorder eff…
Electronic excitations in dilute solutions of poly para phenylene ethynylene (poly-PPE) are studied using a QM/MM approach combining many-body Green's functions theory within the $GW$ approximation and the Bethe-Salpeter equation with polarizable force field models. Oligomers up to a length of 7.5\,nm (10 repeat units) functionalized with nonyl side chains are solvated in toluene and water, respectively. After equilibration using atomistic molecular dynamics (MD), the system is partitioned into a quantum region (backbone) embedded into a classical (side chains and solvent) environment. Optical…
Photo-physical and nonlinear-optical properties of a new amphiphilic conjugated polymer: hydroxylated pyridyl para-phenylene (Py-PhPPP) both in CH2Cl2 solution and in thin films have been investigated. By using Z-scan technique with nanosecond laser pulses of wavelengths ranging from 430 to 600 nm, the large nonlinear absorption and refraction have been determined in terms of the effective third-order, nonlinear-optical susceptibilities. These Z-scans reveal that the nonlinear absorption alters from reverse saturable absorption to saturable absorption at wavelength of ~ 540 nm. Similarly, alte…
The evolution of the density of states (DOS) and conductivity as function of well controlled doping levels in OC_1C_10-poly(p-phenylene vinylene) [OC_1C_10-PPV] doped by FeCl_3 and PF_6, and PF_6 doped polypyrrole (PPy-PF_6 have been investigated. At a doping level as high as 0.2 holes per monomer, the former one remains non-metallic, while the latter crosses the metal-insulator transition. In both systems a similar almost linear increase in DOS as function of charges per unit volume c* has been observed from the electrochemical gated transistor data. In PPy-PF_6, when compared to doped OC_1C_…
We present ab initio calculations which show that the direct-band-gap, effective masses and Fermi velocities of charge carriers in ZnO monolayer (ML-ZnO) in graphene-like honeycomb structure are all tunable by application of in-plane homogeneous biaxial strain. Within our simulated strain limit of $\pm 10$%, the band gap remains direct and shows a strong non-linear variation with strain. Moreover, the average Fermi velocity of electrons in unstrained ML-ZnO is of the same order of magnitude as that in graphene. The results promise potential applications of ML-ZnO in mechatronics/straintronics …
Understanding and controlling exciton transport is a strategic way to enhance the optoelectronic properties of high-performance organic devices. In this article we study triplet exciton migration in crystalline poly($p$-phenylene vinylene) polymer (PPV) using comprehensive electronic structure and quantum dynamical methods. We solve the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics for the triplet energy migrating between two neighboring Frenkel sites in J- and H-aggregate arrangements. From the two-site model we extract key parameters for use with a master-equation approach that allows us to treat nanosi…
Lattice parameter of metastable high-pressure phase of zinc oxide, rock-salt ZnO was measured in the 10-300 K temperature range using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. No phase transition was observed down to 10 K. The lattice parameter of rock-salt ZnO was found to increase from 4.266 Å in the 10-80 K range up to 4.2752(3) Å at 298 K, while the volume thermal expansion coefficient increases from slight negative values below 40 K up to 4.77\times10^-5 K^-1 at 298 K.
The electronic structure and the location of muonium centers (Mu) in single-crystalline ZnO were determined for the first time. Two species of Mu centers with extremely small hyperfine parameters have been observed below 40 K. Both Mu centers have an axial-symmetric hyperfine structure along with a [0001] axis, indicating that they are located at the AB_{O,//} and BC_{//} sites. It is inferred from their small ionization energy (~6 meV and 50 meV) and hyperfine parameters (~10^{-4} times the vacuum value) that these centers behave as shallow donors, strongly suggesting that hydrogen is one of …
The combination of x-ray spectroscopy methods complemented with theoretical analysis unravels the coexistence of paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases in the Zn_0.9Mn_0.1O shell deposited onto array of wurtzite ZnO nanowires. The shell is crystalline with orientation toward the ZnO growth axis, as demonstrated by X-ray linear dichroism. EXAFS analysis confirmed that more than 90% of Mn atoms substituted Zn in the shell while fraction of secondary phases was below 10%. The value of manganese spin magnetic moment was estimated from the Mn Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy to be 4.3μB which is c…
X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation has been used for the first time to study chemical interaction in the FeO-ZnO system at 4.8 GPa and temperatures up to 1300 K. Above 750 K, the chemical reaction between FeO and ZnO has been observed that resulted in the formation of rock salt (rs) Fe1-xZnxO solid solutions (0.3 \leq x \leq 0.85). The lattice parameters of these solid solutions have been in situ measured as a function of temperature under pressure, and corresponding thermal expansion coefficients have been calculated.

A recently developed linear-scaling density-functional theory (LS-DFT) formalism is used to calculate optical absorption spectra of hybrids of C60 and the conjugated polymers poly(para-phenylene) (PPP) and poly(para-phenylene vinylene) (PPV). The use of a LS formalism allows calculations on large systems with realistic proportions of C60, which has been of interest for the use of such materials in photovoltaics. Two different bonding structures are tested for the hybrid PPP and for both systems additional peaks are present in the absorption spectra below the original onset of absorption. By id…
Most of the applications of the nano structures dependent on the morphology which affects the opto electronics properties. This research article provides a pathway of guiding optical properties like band-gap and fluorescence properties by controlled growth of nano-rods, -flowers, -needles or- tubes without external chemical doping, by simple hydro thermal method by controlling over synthesis parameter, temperature.
We have studied the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic defects in the magnetic and electrical transport properties of Co-doped ZnO thin films. X ray absorption measurements show that Co substitute Zn in the ZnO structure and it is in the 2+ oxidation state. Magnetization (M) measurements show that doped samples are mainly paramagnetic. From M vs. H loops measured at 5 K we found that the values of the orbital L and spin S numbers are between 1 and 1.3 for L and S = 3/2, in agreement with the representative values for isolated Co 2+. The obtained negative values of the Curie-Weiss temperature…
Elucidating the underlying principles behind band gap engineering is paramount for the successful implementation of semiconductors in photonic and optoelectronic devices. Recently it has been shown that the band gap of a wide and direct band gap semiconductor, such as ZnO, can be modified upon co-crystallization with amino acids, with the role of the biomolecules remaining unclear. Here, by probing and modeling the light emitting properties of ZnO-amino acid co-crystals, we identify the amino acids role on this band gap modulation and demonstrate their effective chirality transfer to the inter…
We present a theoretical study of broadening of defect luminescence bands due to vibronic coupling. Numerical proof is provided for the commonly used assumption that a multi-dimensional vibrational problem can be mapped onto an effective one-dimensional configuration coordinate diagram. Our approach is implemented based on density functional theory with a hybrid functional, resulting in luminescence lineshapes for important defects in GaN and ZnO that show unprecedented agreement with experiment. We find clear trends concerning effective parameters that characterize luminescence bands of donor…

We have applied the many-body ab-initio diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) method to study Zn and ZnO crystals under pressure, and the energetics of the oxygen vacancy, zinc interstitial and hydrogen impurities in ZnO. We show that DMC is an accurate and practical method that can be used to characterize multiple properties of materials that are challenging for density functional theory approximations. DMC agrees with experimental measurements to within 0.3 eV, including the band-gap of ZnO, the ionization potential of O and Zn, and the atomization energy of O$_2$, ZnO dimer, and wurtzite ZnO.…
A comparative study of wurtzite ZnO doped by rare earth elements (Tm, Yb, Ce) have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) based on the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave orbital (FP-LAPW) method, as implemented in Wien2K code. The structural parameters were calculated by PBEsol functional and in good agreement with the experimental data. The electronic (density of states, band structure) and optical (absorption coefficient, reflectivity, refraction index) properties were determined by TB-mBJ potential. The rare earth element doped ZnO have a significant impact on t…
An extensive theoretical investigation of the nonpolar (10$\bar{1}$0) and (11$\bar{2}$0) surfaces as well as the polar zinc terminated (0001)--Zn and oxygen terminated (000$\bar{1}$)--O surfaces of ZnO is presented. Particular attention is given to the convergence properties of various parameters such as basis set, k--point mesh, slab thickness, or relaxation constraints within LDA and PBE pseudopotential calculations using both plane wave and mixed basis sets. The pros and cons of different approaches to deal with the stability problem of the polar surfaces are discussed. Reliable results for…
We studied the circular polarization and angular dependences of the magneto-photoluminescence spectra of the free A-exciton 1S state in wurtzite ZnO at T = 5 K. The circular polarization properties of the spectra clearly indicate that the top valence band has Gamma_7 symmetry. The out-of-plane component of the magnetic field, which is parallel to the sample's c axis, leads to linear Zeeman splitting of both the dipole-allowed Gamma_5 exciton state and the weakly allowed Gamma_1/Gamma_2 exciton states. The in-plane field, which is perpendicular to the c axis, increases the oscillator strength o…
Poly($para$-phenylene) has been recognized as one important family of conducting polymers upon doping with donors or acceptors. This system possesses a chain-like structure with infinite benzene rings linked with the single C-C bond. Oligophenyls as models of poly($para$-phenylene) with short chains in the \emph{para} position were found to exhibit superconductivity at transition temperatures ranging from 3 K to 123 K upon dopant. Structural studies have revealed that there exist the order-disorder transitions in many \emph{p}-oligophenyls with almost doubled lattice constants in the \emph{b} …
We report the calculated fundamental band gaps of \emph{wurtzite} ternary alloys Zn$_{1-x}$M$_x$O (M=Mg, Cd) and the band offsets of the ZnO/Zn$_{1-x}$M$_x$O heterojunctions, these II-VI materials are important for electronics and optoelectronics. Our calculation is based on density functional theory within the linear muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) approach where the modified Becke-Johnson (MBJ) semi-local exchange is used to accurately produce the band gaps, and the coherent potential approximation (CPA) is applied to deal with configurational average for the ternary alloys. The combined LMTO-MBJ-…
The structural, optical, morphological and nonlinear optical properties of Cu:ZnO spray-coated films are studied. The surface morphology of Cu:ZnO thin films turned out to be homogenous, crack free and well covered with pea-shaped grains. The peak shift observed in the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra of the Cu:ZnO thin films infers the defect states present in the films. The satellite peak observed at 939.9 eV for Cu2P core-level spectra confirms the +2 oxidation state of Cu in the films. The formation of additional defect levels in the nanostruc-tures upon Cu doping was investigated …
This work explores the Zn vacancy in ZnO using hybrid density functional theory calculations. The Zn vacancy is predicted to be an exceedingly deep polaronic acceptor that can bind a localized hole on each of the four nearest-neighbor O ions. The hole localization is accompanied by a distinct outward relaxation of the O ions, which leads to lower symmetry and reduced formation energy. Notably, we find that initial symmetry-breaking is required to capture this effect, which might explain the absence of polaronic hole localization in some previous hybrid density functional studies. We present a …
The effects of including the Hubbard on-site Coulombic correction to the structural parameters and valence energy states of wurtzite ZnO was explored. Due to the changes in the structural parameters caused by correction of hybridization between Zn d states and O p states, suitable parameters of Hubbard terms have to be determined for an accurate prediction of ZnO properties. Using the LDA+${U}$ method by applying Hubbard corrections $U_p$ to Zn 3d states and $U_p$ to O 2p states, the lattice constants were underestimated for all tested Hubbard parameters. The combination of both $U_d$ and $U_p…

Samarium doped Na$_2$O-ZnO-TeO$_2$ (NZT) glasses were prepared by the melt quenching method. The glass-forming ability and glass stability of prepared glass was estimated by Hruby parameter using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermo-gravimetric Analysis (TGA). The study of FTIR spectra and X-ray diffraction described the ionic nature and the amorphous pattern of glass respectively. The absorption peaks were observed for the transitions 6H5/2-4P3/2 at 402 nm,6H5/2-4M19/2 at 418 nm, 6H5/2-4I15/2 at 462 nm and 6H5/2-4I11/2 at 478 nm in the absorption spectra. The optical band gap energy…
The structural, optical and magnetic properties of the Zn1-xMnxO (0 < x < 0.05) thin films synthesized by sol-gel technique have been analyzed in the light of modification of the electronic structure and disorder developed in the samples due to Mn doping. The films are of single phase in nature and no formation of any secondary phase has been detected from structural analysis. Absence of magnetic impurity phase in these films confirmed from morphological study also. Increasing tendency of lattice parameters and unit cell volume has been observed with increasing Mn doping concentration. The inc…
Pariser-Parr-Pople (P-P-P) model Hamiltonian has been used extensively over the years to perform calculations of electronic structure and optical properties of $π$-conjugated systems successfully. In spite of tremendous successes of \emph{ab initio} theory of electronic structure of large systems, the P-P-P model continues to be a popular one because of a recent resurgence in interest in the physics of $π$-conjugated polymers, fullerenes and other carbon based materials. In this paper, we describe a Fortran 90 computer program developed by us, which uses P-P-P model Hamiltonian to not only sol…
We study the long-time self-diffusion of a single conjugated organic para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) molecule physisorbed on the inorganic ZnO $\left(10\overline{1}0\right)$ surface by means of all-atom molecular dynamics computer simulations. We find strongly anisotropic diffusion processes in which the diffusive motion along the polar [0001] direction of the surface can be many orders of magnitudes slower at relevant experimental temperatures than in the perpendicular direction. The observation can be rationalized by the underlying charge pattern of the electrostatically heterogeneous surface which i…

Ionic layer epitaxy (ILE) has recently been developed as an effective strategy to synthesize nanometer-thick 2D materials with a non-layered crystal structure, such as ZnO. The packing density of the amphiphilic monolayer is believed to be a key parameter that controls the nanosheet nucleation and growth. In this work, we systematically investigated the growth behavior of single-crystalline ZnO nanosheets templated at the water-air interface by an anionic oleylsulfate monolayer with different packing densities. The thicknesses of ZnO nanosheets were tuned from one unit cell to four unit cells,…
Orientation dependent electronic properties of wurtzite zinc oxide nanorods are characterized by aloof beam electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) carried out in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). The two key crystal orientation differentiating transitions specific to the in-plane (13.0 eV) and out-of-plane (11.2 eV) directions with respect to the wurtzite structure are examined by first principles density-functional theory calculations. We note some degree of orientation dependence at the onset of direct band gap transition near 3.4 eV. We demonstrate that good polarization…
The results of computer simulations of light scattering by a random array of small particles is presented. Results are given for arrays of particles situated randomly in a cubic, 3D sample $1.6μ$ on a side with particle numbers ranging from 100 to 937. The material parameters used correspond to ZnO and Ag, over the wavelength range $300nm < λ< 400nm$. The particle diameter considered for ZnO is 50nm and for Ag 20nm. No evidence of light localization was found. Energy density calculations show that energy is mostly confined to the region near and in the scattering particles, and that little ene…
A spatial stochastic model is developed which describes the 3D nanomorphology of composite materials, being blends of two different (organic and inorganic) solid phases. Such materials are used, for example, in photoactive layers of hybrid polymer zinc oxide solar cells. The model is based on ideas from stochastic geometry and spatial statistics. Its parameters are fitted to image data gained by electron tomography (ET), where adaptive thresholding and stochastic segmentation have been used to represent morphological features of the considered ET data by unions of overlapping spheres. Their mi…
We generalize and systematize basic experimental data on optical and luminescence properties of ZnO single crystals, thin films, powders, ceramics, and nanocrystals. We consider and study mechanisms by which two main emission bands occur, a short-wavelength band near the fundamental absorption edge and a broad long-wavelength band, the maximum of which usually lies in the green spectral range. We determine a relationship between the two luminescence bands and study in detail the possibility of controlling the characteristics of ZnO by varying the maximum position of the short-wavelength band. …
Using the hybrid exchange-correlation functional within the density-functional theory, we have systematically investigated the structural and electronic properties of MO (M = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd) in binary rocksalt (B1), zincblende (B3) and wurtzite (B4) phases, including the structural parameters, bulk moduli, band gaps and deformation potentials. Our results agree well with the experimental data and other theoretical results, and give a better understanding of the relationship between the geometric and electronic structure. After calculating the band alignment, we find that in both th…
Electronic structure and band characteristics for zinc monochalcogenides with zinc-blende- and wurtzite-type structures are studied by first-principles density-functional-theory calculations with different approximations. It is shown that the local-density approximation underestimates the band gap and energy splitting between the states at the top of the valence band, misplaces the energy levels of the Zn-3d states, and overestimates the crystal-field-splitting energy. Regardless of the structure type considered, the spin-orbit-coupling energy is found to be overestimated for ZnO and underesti…
First-principles density-functional calculations have been performed for zinc monochalcogenides with zinc-blende- and wurtzite-type structures. It is shown that the local-density approximation underestimates the band gap, misplaces the energy levels of the Zn-3d states, and overestimates the crystal-field splitting energy. Without spinorbit coupling, the order of the states at the top of VB is found to be normal for all the ZnX phases considered. Upon inclusion of the spinorbit coupling in calculations, ZnO in zinc-blende- and wurtzite-type phases become anomalous. It is shown that the Zn-3d e…
Hybrid systems consisting of organic molecules at inorganic semiconductor surfaces are gaining increasing importance as thin film devices for optoelectronics. The efficiency of such devices strongly depends on the collective behavior of the adsorbed molecules. In the present paper we propose a novel, coarse-grained model addressing the condensed phases of a representative hybrid system, that is, para-sexiphenyl (6P) at zinc-oxide (ZnO). Within our model, intermolecular interactions are repre- sented via a Gay-Berne potential (describing steric and van-der-Waals interactions) combined with the …
We report on the energy level alignment evolution of valence and conduction bands of armchair-oriented graphene nanoribbons (aGNR) as their band gap shrinks with increasing width. We use 4,4-dibromo-para-terphenyl as molecular precursor on Au(111) to form extended poly-para-phenylene nanowires, which can be fused sideways to form atomically precise aGNRs of varying widths. We measure the frontier bands by means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy, corroborating that the nanoribbons band gap is inversely proportional to their width. Interestingly, valence bands are found to show Fermi level pinn…
Designing molecular organic semiconductors with distinct frontier orbitals is key for the development of devices with desirable properties. Generating defined organic nanostructures with atomic precision can be accomplished by on-surface synthesis. We use this dry chemistry to introduce topological variations in a conjugated poly-para-phenylene chain in the form of meta-junctions. As evidenced by STM and LEED, we produce a macroscopically ordered, monolayer thin zigzag chain film on a vicinal silver crystal. These cross-conjugated nanostructures are expected to display altered electronic prope…
