We analyze the applicability of far-infrared fine-structure lines [CII] 158 micron, [OI] 63 micron and [OIII] 88 micron to reliably trace the star formation rate (SFR) in a sample of low-metallicity dwarf galaxies from the Herschel Dwarf Galaxy Survey and compare with a broad sample of galaxies of various types and metallicities in the literature. We study the trends and scatter in the relation between the SFR (as traced by GALEX FUV and MIPS 24 micron) and far-infrared line emission, on spatially resolved and global galaxy scales, in dwarf galaxies. We assemble far-infrared line measurements from the literature and infer whether the far-infrared lines can probe the SFR (as traced by the total-infrared luminosity) in a variety of galaxy populations. In metal-poor dwarfs, the [OI] and [OIII] lines show the strongest correlation with the SFR with an uncertainty on the SFR estimates better than a factor of 2, while the link between [CII] emission and the SFR is more dispersed (uncertainty factor of 2.6). The increased scatter in the SFR-L([CII]) relation towards low metal abundances, warm dust temperatures, large filling factors of diffuse, highly ionized gas suggests that other cooling lines start to dominate depending on the density and ionization state of the gas. For the literature sample, we evaluate the correlations for a number of different galaxy populations. The [CII] and [OI] lines are considered to be reliable SFR tracers in starburst galaxies, recovering the star formation activity within an uncertainty of factor 2. [Abridged]
(Abridged) Long gamma-ray bursts (LGRB) have been suggested as promising tracers of star formation owing to their association with the core-collapse of massive stars. The goal of this work is to characterise the population of host galaxies of LGRBs at 1 < z < 2, investigate the conditions in which LGRBs form at these redshifts and assess their use as tracers of star formation. We perform a spectro-photometric analysis to determine the stellar mass, star formation rate, specific star formation rate and metallicity of the complete, unbiased host galaxy sample of the Swift/BAT6 LGRB sample at 1 <…
Our ability to study the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the earliest galaxies will rely on emission line diagnostics at rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. In this work, we identify metallicity-sensitive diagnostics using UV emission lines. We compare UV-derived metallicities with standard, well-established optical metallicities using a sample of galaxies with rest-frame UV and optical spectroscopy. We find that the He2-O3C3 diagnostic (He II 1640 / C III 1906,1909 vs. O III 1666 / C III 1906,1909) is a reliable metallicity tracer, particularly at low metallicity (12+log(O…
Are LGRBs biased tracers of star formation? Clues from the host galaxies of the Swift/BAT6 complete sample of bright LGRBs. II: star formation rates and metallicities at z < 1
We present ISM and CGM metallicities for 25 absorption systems associated with isolated star-forming galaxies (<z>=0.28) with 9.4<log(M*/Msun)<10.9 and with absorption detected within 200kpc. Galaxy ISM metallicities were measured using Ha/[NII] emission lines from Keck/ESI spectra. CGM single-phase low-ionization metallicities were modeled using MCMC and Cloudy analysis of absorption from HST/COS and Keck/HIRES or VLT/UVES quasar spectra. We find that the star-forming galaxy ISM metallicities follow the observed stellar mass metallicity relation (scatter 0.19dex). CGM metallicity shows no dep…
Globular clusters (GCs) are found ubiquitously in massive galaxies and due to their old ages, they are regarded as fossil records of galaxy evolution. Spectroscopic studies of GC systems are often limited to the outskirts of galaxies, where GCs stand out against the galaxy background and serve as bright tracers of galaxy assembly. In this work, we use the capabilities of the Multi Unit Explorer Spectrograph (MUSE) to extract a spectroscopic sample of 722 GCs in the inner regions ($\lesssim 3 R_\text{eff}$) of 32 galaxies in the Fornax cluster. These galaxies were observed as part of the Fornax…

Deriving the metallicity, [Fe/H], in low-resolution spectra of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars is a tedious task that, owing to the large number of line blends, often leads to uncertainties on [Fe/H] exceeding 0.25dex. The CEMP stars increase in number with decreasing [Fe/H] and some of these are known to be bona fide second generation halo stars. Hence, knowing their [Fe/H] is important for tracing the formation and chemical evolution of the Galaxy. Here, we aim to improve the [Fe/H] measurements in low-resolution spectra by avoiding issues related to blends. We improve our chemical t…
The difference in metallicity distribution functions of halo stars and globular clusters as a function of galaxy type: A tracer of globular cluster formation and evolution
I present integrated colors and surface brightness fluctuation magnitudes in the mid-IR, derived from stellar population synthesis models that include the effects of the dusty envelopes around thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars. The models are based on the Bruzual & Charlot CB* isochrones; they are single-burst, range in age from a few Myr to 14 Gyr, and comprise metallicities between $Z$= 0.0001 and $Z$ = 0.04. I compare these models to mid-IR data of AGB stars and star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds, and study the effects of varying self-consistently the mass-loss ra…

We recently presented a new statistical method to constrain the physics of star formation and feedback on the cloud scale by reconstructing the underlying evolutionary timeline. However, by itself this new method only recovers the relative durations of different evolutionary phases. To enable observational applications, it therefore requires knowledge of an absolute 'reference time-scale' to convert relative time-scales into absolute values. The logical choice for this reference time-scale is the duration over which the star formation rate (SFR) tracer is visible because it can be characterise…
We present a methodology for the use of sulphur as global metallicity tracer in galaxies, allowing performing a complete abundance analysis using only the red-to-near infrared spectral region. We have applied it to a compilation of high-quality data split into two samples: HII regions (DHR) in spiral and irregular galaxies, and dwarf galaxies dominated by a strong starburst (HIIGal). Sulphur abundances have been derived by direct methods under the assumption of an ionisation structure composed of two zones: an intermediate one where S{++} is originated and a low ionisation one where S{+} is fo…
We investigate the fine-structure [C${\rm \scriptsize II}$] line at $158\,μ$m as a molecular gas tracer by analyzing the relationship between molecular gas mass ($M_{\rm mol}$) and [C${\rm \scriptsize II}$] line luminosity ($L_{\rm [CII]}$) in 11,125 $z\simeq 6$ star-forming, main sequence galaxies from the SIMBA simulations, with line emission modeled by SÍGAME. Though most ($\sim 50-100\,\%$) of the gas mass in our simulations is ionized, the bulk ($> 50\,\%$) of the [C${\rm \scriptsize II}$] emission comes from the molecular phase. We find a sub-linear (slope $0.78\pm 0.01$) $\log L_{\rm [C…
We carry out a comparative analysis of the metallicities from the stellar, neutral-gas, and ionized-gas components in the metal-rich spiral galaxy M83. We analyze spectroscopic observations taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detect a clear depletion of the HI gas, as observed from the HI column densities in the nuclear region of this spiral galaxy. We find column densities of log[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}$] $<$ 20.0 at galactocentric distances of $<$ 0.18 kpc, in contrast to column densities of log[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}$] $…
The ages and metallicities of globular clusters (GCs) are known to be powerful tracers of the properties of their progenitor galaxies, enabling their use in determining the merger histories of galaxies. However, while useful in separating GCs into individual accretion events, the orbits of GC groups themselves have received less attention as probes of their progenitor galaxy properties. In this work, we use simulations of galaxies and their GC systems from the E-MOSAICS project to explore how the present-day orbital properties of GCs are related to the properties of their progenitor galaxies. …

We present three-dimensional astrochemical simulations and synthetic observations of magnetised, turbulent, self-gravitating molecular clouds. We explore various galactic interstellar medium environments, including cosmic-ray ionization rates in the range of $ζ_{\rm CR}=10^{-17}$-$10^{-14}\,{\rm s}^{-1}$, far-UV intensities in the range of $G_0=1$-$10^3$ and metallicities in the range of $Z=0.1$-$2\,{\rm Z}_{\odot}$. The simulations also probe a range of densities and levels of turbulence, including cases where the gas has undergone recent compression due to cloud-cloud collisions. We examine:…
The Milky Way bulge is an important tracer of the early formation and chemical enrichment of the Galaxy. The abundances of different iron-peak elements in field bulge stars can give information on the nucleosynthesis processes that took place in the earliest supernovae. Cobalt (Z=27) and copper (Z=29) are particularly interesting. We aim to identify the nucleosynthesis processes responsible for the formation of the iron-peak elements Co and Cu. Methods. We derived abundances of the iron-peak elements cobalt and copper in 56 bulge giants, 13 of which were red clump stars. High-resolution spectra…
Context. Determining the metallicities and ages of M31 clusters is fundamental to the study of the formation and evolution of M31 itself. The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) has carried out a systematic spectroscopic campaign of clusters and candidates in M31. Aims. We constructed a catalogue of 346 M31 clusters observed by LAMOST. By combining the information of the LAMOST spectra and the multi-band photometry, we developed a new algorithm to estimate the metallicities and ages of these clusters. Methods. We distinguish young clusters from old using random f…
We study 147 star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in order to determine their mean metallicities and ages, as well as the mean metallicities of 80 surrounding fields. We construct an age-metallicity relation (AMR) for the clusters in the LMC. For this purpose, we used Strömgren photometry obtained with the SOI camera on the 4.1 m SOAR telescope. We found the mean metallicity and age for 110 star clusters. For the remaining 37, we provide an age estimation only. To the best of our knowledge, for 29 clusters from our sample, we provide both the metallicity and age for the first time…
To understand the formation of stars from clouds of molecular gas, one essentially needs to know two things: What gas collapses, and how long it takes to do so. We address these questions by embedding pseudo-Lagrangian tracer particles in three simulations of self-gravitating turbulence. We identify prestellar cores at the end of the collapse, and use the tracer particles to rewind the simulations to identify the preimage gas for each core at the beginning of each simulation. This is the first of a series of papers, wherein we present the technique and examine the first question: What gas coll…
Despite advances in observational data, theoretical models, and computational techniques to simulate key physical processes in the formation and evolution of galaxies, the stellar mass assembly of galaxies still remains an unsolved problem today. Optical spectroscopic measurements appear to show that the gas-phase metallicities of local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are significantly lower than those of normal star-forming galaxies. This difference has resulted in the claim that ULIRGs are fueled by metal-poor gas accretion from the outskirts\cite{Mannucci10}. Here we report on a n…
This work presents a first attempt to apply fuzzy cluster analysis (FCA) to analyzing stellar spectra. FCA is adopted to categorize line indices measured from LAMOST low-resolution spectra, and automatically remove the least metallicity-sensitive indices. The FCA-processed indices are then transferred to the artificial neural network (ANN) to derive metallicities for 147 very metal-poor (VMP) stars that have been analyzed by high-resolution spectroscopy. The FCA-ANN method could derive robust metallicities for VMP stars, with a precision of 0.2 dex compared with high-resolution analysis. The r…
Measurements of the gas mass are necessary to determine the planet formation potential of protoplanetary disks. Observations of rare CO isotopologues are typically used to determine disk gas masses; however, if the line emission is optically thick this will result in an underestimated disk mass. With ALMA we have detected the rarest stable CO isotopologue, 13C17O, in a protoplanetary disk for the first time. We compare our observations with the existing detections of 12CO, 13CO, C18O and C17O in the HD163296 disk. Radiative transfer modelling using a previously benchmarked model, and assuming …

We present new period-$ϕ_{31}$-[Fe/H] relations for first overtone RRL stars (RRc), calibrated over a broad range of metallicities ($-2.5 < \textrm{[Fe/H]}< 0.0$) utilizing the largest currently available set of Galactic halo field RRL with homogeneous spectroscopic metallicities. Our relations are defined in the optical (ASAS-SN $V$-band) and, inaugurally, in the infrared (WISE $W1$ and $W2$ bands). Our $V$-band relation can reproduce individual RRc spectroscopic metallicities with a dispersion of 0.30 dex over the entire metallicity range of our calibrator sample (an RMS smaller than what we…
Despite the advances provided by large-scale photometric surveys, stellar features - such as metallicity - generally remain limited to spectroscopic observations often of bright, nearby low-extinction stars. To rectify this, we present a neural network approach for estimating the metallicities and distances of red giant stars with 8-band photometry and parallaxes from Gaia EDR3 and the 2MASS and WISE surveys. The algorithm accounts for uncertainties in the predictions arising from the range of possible outputs at each input and from the range of models compatible with the training set (through…
In an effort to improve our understanding of the spiral arm structure of the Milky Way, we use Classical Cepheids (CCs) to increase the number of young tracers on the far side of the Galactic disk with accurately determined distances. We use a sample of 30 CCs, discovered using near-infrared photometry from the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea survey (VVV) and classified based on their radial velocities and metallicities. We combine them with another 20 CCs from the literature for which VVV photometry is available. The compiled sample of CCs with homogeneously computed distances based on VVV …
Dense molecular gas and star formation are correlated in galaxies. The effect of low metallicity on this relationship is crucial for interpreting observations of high redshift galaxies, which have lower metallicities than galaxies today. However, it remains relatively unexplored because dense molecular gas tracers like HCN and HCO+ are faint in low metallicity systems. We present Green Bank Telescope observations of HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) on giant molecular cloud (34pc) scales in the nearby low metallicity ($12+\log({\rm O/H})=8.2$) starburst IC 10 and compare them to those in other galaxies. …
