This is a short review summarizing the current status of the comparison between microscopic and macroscopic entropy of extremal BPS black holes in string theory.
The extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole embedded in a Melvin-like magnetic universe is studied in the framework of the Kerr/CFT correspondence. The near horizon geometry can be written as a warped and twisted product of $AdS_2 \times S^2$, also in presence of an axial external magnetic field that deforms the black hole. The central charge of the Virasoro algebra can be extracted from the asymptotic symmetries. Using the Cardy formula for the microscopic statistical entropy of the dual two-dimensional CFT, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, for this charged and magnetised black hole, is reprodu…
A seven parameter family of five-dimensional black hole solutions depending on mass, two angular momenta, three charges and the asymptotic value of a scalar field is constructed. The entropy is computed as a function of these parameters both from the Bekenstein-Hawking formula and from the degeneracies of the corresponding D-brane states in string theory. The expressions agree at and to leading order away from extremality.
We derive the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula for four and five dimensional non-supersymmetric black holes (which include the Schwarzchild ones) by counting microscopic states. This is achieved by first showing that these black holes are U-dual to the three-dimensional black hole of Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli and then counting microscopic states of the latter following Carlip's approach. Higher than five dimensional black holes are also considered. We discuss the connection of our approach to the D-brane picture.
String theory is used to compute the microscopic entropy for several examples of black holes in compactifications with $N=2$ supersymmetry. Agreement with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the moduli-independent $N=2$ area formula is found in all cases.
Extremal BPS-saturated black holes in $N=2$, $d=4$ supergravity can carry electric and magnetic charges $(q^Λ_{(m)},q_Λ^{(e)})$. It is shown that in smooth cases the moduli fields at the horizon take a fixed "rational" value $X^Λ(q_{(m)},q^{(e)})$ which is determined by the charges and is independent of the asymptotic values of the moduli fields. A universal formula for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is derived in terms of the charges and the moduli space geometry at $X^Λ(q_{(m)},q^{(e)})$. This work extends previous results of Ferrara, Kallosh and the author for the pure magnetic case.
Macroscopic quantum vacuum and modern theories of gravitation share the strong interplay between geometry and physical phenomena. We review selected issues related to the accuracy of the measurement of Casimir forces with particular emphasis on the implications for the search of non-Newtonian gravitational forces in the micrometer range. We then discuss the interplay of the Higgs particle with gravitation, arguing that spectroscopic shifts in atomic transitions due to the modifications of the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field in regions with strong curvature of space-time may be of c…
We show that the spinning magnetic one-brane in minimal five-dimensional supergravity admits a decoupling limit that interpolates smoothly between a self-dual null orbifold of AdS_3 \times S^2 and the near-horizon limit of the extremal Kerr black hole times a circle. We use this interpolating solution to understand the field theory dual to spinning M5 branes as a deformation of the Discrete Light Cone Quantized (DLCQ) Maldacena-Stominger-Witten (MSW) CFT. In particular, the conformal weights of the operators dual to the deformation around AdS_3 \times S^2 are calculated. We present pieces of e…
We study the stretched membrane of a black hole as consisting of a perfect fluid. We find that the pressure of this fluid is negative and the specific heat is negative too. A surprising result is that if we are to assume the fluid be composed of some quanta, then the dispersion relation of the fundamental quantum is $E=m^2/k$, with $m$ at the scale of the Planck mass. There are two possible interpretation of this dispersion relation, one is the noncommutative spacetime on the stretched membrane, another is that the fundamental quantum is microscopic black holes.
In this paper we construct the BPS black hole generating solution of toroidally compactified string (and M) theory, giving for it both the macroscopic and microscopic description. Choosing a proper U-duality gauge the latter will be given by a bound state made solely of D-branes. The axionic nature of the supergravity solution will be directly related to non-trivial angles between the constituent D-branes (type IIB configuration) or, in a T-dual gauge, to the presence of magnetic flux on constituent D-brane world volumes (type IIA configuration). As expected, the four dimensional axion fields …
Using G2(2) dualities we construct the most general black string solution of minimal five-dimensional ungauged supergravity. The black string has five independent parameters, namely, the magnetic one-brane charge, smeared electric zero-brane charge, boost along the string direction, energy above the BPS bound, and rotation in the transverse space. In one extremal limit it reduces to the three parameter supersymmetric string of five-dimensional minimal supergravity; in another extremal limit it reduces to the three parameter non-supersymmetric extremal string of five-dimensional minimal supergr…
In this brief note we show that the horizon entropy of the largest known class of non-supersymmetric extremal black rings, with up to six parameters, is exactly reproduced for all values of the ring radius using the same conformal field theory of the four-charge four-dimensional black hole. A particularly simple case is a dipole black ring without any conserved charges. The mass gets renormalized, but the first corrections it receives can be easily understood as an interaction potential energy. Finally, we stress that even if the entropy is correctly reproduced, this only implies that one sect…
We investigate the Kerr-Newman-NUT black hole solution obtained from Plebański-Demiański solutions with several assumptions. The origin of the microscopic entropy of this black hole is investigated using the conjectured Kerr/CFT correspondence which is originally proposed for extremal Kerr black holes. The isometry of the near-horizon extremal Kerr-Newman-NUT black hole shows that the asymptotic symmetry group may be implemented to compute the central charge of the Virasoro algebra. Furthermore, by assuming Frolov-Thorne vacuum, the conformal temperatures can be obtained. Then by using the Car…
In this note it is shown that near-extremal four dimensional dyonic black holes, where the dilaton is not constant, can be described by a microscopic model consisting of a one-dimensional gas of massless particles.
We study configurations consisting of a pair of non-extremal black holes in four dimensions, both with the same mass, and with charges of the same magnitude but opposite sign---diholes, for short. We present such exact solutions for Einstein-Maxwell theory with arbitrary dilaton coupling, and also solutions to the U(1)^4 theories that arise from compactified string/M-theory. Despite the fact that the solutions are very complicated, physical properties of these black holes, such as their area, charge, and interaction energy, admit simple expressions. We also succeed in providing a microscopic d…
We determine the corrections to the entropy of extremal black holes arising from terms quadratic in the Riemann tensor in $N=2, D=4$ supergravity theories. We follow Wald's proposal to modify the Bekenstein-Hawking area law. The new entropy formula, whose value only depends on the electric/magnetic charges, is expressed in terms of a single holomorphic function and is consistent with electric-magnetic duality. For string effective field theories arising from Calabi-Yau compactifications, our result for the entropy of a certain class of extremal black-hole solutions fully agrees with the counti…
Euclidean gravity method has been successful in computing logarithmic corrections to extremal black hole entropy in terms of low energy data, and gives results in perfect agreement with the microscopic results in string theory. Motivated by this success we apply Euclidean gravity to compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of various non-extremal black holes in different dimensions, taking special care of integration over the zero modes and keeping track of the ensemble in which the computation is done. These results provide strong constraint on any ultraviolet completion of the theory i…
After summarizing the development of black hole thermodynamics in the seventies, we describe a recent microscopic model. This model suggests that the Bekenstein-Hawking area formula holds for extremal black holes as well as for ordinary (non-extremal) ones. On the other hand, semiclassical studies have suggested a discontinuity between non-extremal and extremal cases. We indicate how a reconciliation has been brought about by summing over topologies.
Torsion represents the most natural extension of General Relativity and it attracted interest over the years in view of its link with fundamental properties of particle motion. The bulk of the approaches concerning the torsion dynamics focus their attention on their geometrical nature and they are naturally led to formulate a non-propagating theory. Here we review two different paradigms to describe the role of the torsion field, as far as a propagating feature of the resulting dynamics is concerned. However, these two proposals deal with different pictures, i.e., a macroscopic approach, based…
A random matrix model with a sigma-model like constraint, the restricted trace ensemble (RTE), is solved in the large-n limit. In the macroscopic limit the smooth connected two-point resolvent G(z,w) is found to be non-universal, extending previous results from monomial to arbitrary polynomial potentials. Using loop equation techniques we give a closed though non-universal expression for G(z,w), which extends recursively to all higher k-point resolvents. These findings are in contrast to the usual unconstrained one-matrix model. However, in the microscopic large-n limit, which probes only corr…
Computations in general relativity have revealed an interesting phase diagram for the black hole - black string phase transition, with three different black objects present for a range of mass values. We can add charges to this system by `boosting' plus dualities; this makes only kinematic changes in the gravity computation but has the virtue of bringing the system into the near-extremal domain where a microscopic model can be conjectured. When the compactification radius is very large or very small then we get the microscopic models of 4+1 dimensional near-extremal holes and 3+1 dimensional n…
In this article we study correspondence between the microscopic spectrum and macroscopic properties of a class of extremal and non-extremal black branes and outline an origin of the interactions among various microstates of a given black brane configuration from the perspective of an intrinsic Riemannian geometry arising from the coarse graining entropy over a large number of microstates. We have analyzed the state-space geometry in the case of various extremal and non-extremal black branes arising from the string theories, multi-centered black brane configurations, small black holes with frac…
The microscopic and the macroscopic properties of A-superstatistics, related to the class A(0,n-1)\equiv sl(1|n) of simple Lie superalgebras are investigated. The algebra sl(1|n) is described in terms of generators f_1^\pm, >..., f_n^\pm, which satisfy certain triple relations and are called Jacobson generators. The Fock spaces of A-superstatistics are investigated and the Pauli principle of the corresponding statistics is formulated. Some thermal properties of A-superstatistics are constructed under the assumption that the particles interact only via statistical interaction imposed by the Pau…
