Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two given graphs. The Ramsey number $R(G_1,G_2)$ is the least integer $r$ such that for every graph $G$ on $r$ vertices, either $G$ contains a $G_1$ or $\overline{G}$ contains a $G_2$. Parsons gave a recursive formula to determine the values of $R(P_n,K_{1,m})$, where $P_n$ is a path on $n$ vertices and $K_{1,m}$ is a star on $m+1$ vertices. In this note, we first give an explicit formula for the path-star Ramsey numbers. Secondly, we study the Ramsey numbers $R(P_n,K_1\vee F_m)$, where $F_m$ is a linear forest on $m$ vertices. We determine the exact values of $R(P_n,K_1\vee F_m)$ for the cases $m\leq n$ and $m\geq 2n$, and for the case that $F_m$ has no odd component. Moreover, we give a lower bound and an upper bound for the case $n+1\leq m\leq 2n-1$ and $F_m$ has at least one odd component.
The $k$-colour bipartite Ramsey number of a bipartite graph $H$ is the least integer $N$ for which every $k$-edge-coloured complete bipartite graph $K_{N,N}$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The study of bipartite Ramsey numbers was initiated over 40 years ago by Faudree and Schelp and, independently, by Gyárfás and Lehel, who determined the $2$-colour bipartite Ramsey number of paths. Recently the $3$-colour Ramsey number of paths and (even) cycles, was essentially determined as well. Improving the results of DeBiasio, Gyárfás, Krueger, Ruszinkó, and Sárközy, in this paper we determine a…
The $k$-colour bipartite Ramsey number of a bipartite graph $H$ is the least integer $n$ for which every $k$-edge-coloured complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The study of bipartite Ramsey numbers was initiated, over 40 years ago, by Faudree and Schelp and, independently, by Gyárfás and Lehel, who determined the $2$-colour Ramsey number of paths. In this paper we determine asymptotically the $3$-colour bipartite Ramsey number of paths and (even) cycles.
The anti-Ramsey problem was introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1970s. The anti-Ramsey number of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, $ar(n,s, \mathcal{H})$, is the smallest integer $c$ such that in any coloring of the edges of the $s$-uniform complete hypergraph on $n$ vertices with exactly $c$ colors, there is a copy of $\mathcal{H}$ whose edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbers of linear paths and loose paths in hypergraphs for sufficiently large $n$, and give bounds for the anti-Ramsey numbers of Berge paths. Similar exact anti-Ramsey numbers are obtai…
We study the Ramsey number for the 3-path of length three and $n$ colors and show that $R(P^3_3;n)\le λ_0 n+7\sqrt{n}$, for some explicit constant $λ_0=1.97466\dots$.
Recently, asymptotic values of 2-color Ramsey numbers for loose cycles and also loose paths were determined. Here we determine the 2-color Ramsey number of 3-uniform loose paths when one of the paths is significantly larger than the other: for every $n\geq \Big\lfloor\frac{5m}{4}\Big\rfloor$, we show that $$R(\mathcal{P}^3_n,\mathcal{P}^3_m)=2n+\Big\lfloor\frac{m+1}{2}\Big\rfloor.$$
For given graphs $G$ and $H,$ the \emph{Ramsey number} $R(G,H)$ is the least natural number $n$ such that for every graph $F$ of order $n$ the following condition holds: either $F$ contains $G$ or the complement of $F$ contains $H.$ In this paper, we improve the Surahmat and Tomescu's result \cite{ST:06} on the Ramsey number of paths versus Jahangirs. We also determine the Ramsey number $R(\cup G,H)$, where $G$ is a path and $H$ is a Jahangir graph.
We determine Turán numbers for the family of 3-uniform minimal paths of length four \emph{for all $n$}. We also establish the second and third order Turán numbers and use them to compute the corresponding Ramsey numbers for up to four colors.
For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$, the ordered Ramsey number $\operatorname{OR}_t(G)$ is the least integer $N$ such that every $t$-coloring of the edges of the complete $k$-uniform graph on vertex set $\{1,\ldots,N\}$ contains a monochromatic copy of $G$ whose vertices follow the prescribed order. Due to this added order restriction, the ordered Ramsey numbers can be much larger than the usual graph Ramsey numbers. We determine that the ordered Ramsey numbers of loose paths under a monotone order grows as a tower of height one less than the maximum degree. We al…
We show that if we color the hyperedges of the complete $3$-uniform complete graph on $2n+\sqrt{18n+1}+2$ vertices with $n$ colors, then one of the color classes contains a loose path of length three.
For given graphs $G$ and $H,$ the \emph{Ramsey number} $R(G,H)$ is the least natural number $n$ such that for every graph $F$ of order $n$ the following condition holds: either $F$ contains $G$ or the complement of $F$ contains $H.$ In this paper, we determine the Ramsey number of paths versus generalized Jahangir graphs. We also derive the Ramsey number $R(tP_n,H)$, where $H$ is a generalized Jahangir graph $J_{s,m}$ where $s\geq2$ is even, $m\geq3$ and $t\geq1$ is any integer.
Let $P_t$ denote the path on $t$ vertices. The $r$-coloured Ramsey number of $P_t$, denoted by $R_r(P_t)$, is the minimum integer $n$ such that whenever the complete graph on $n$ vertices is given an $r$-edge-colouring, there exists a monochromatic copy of $P_t$. In this note, we determine $R_r(P_5)$, which is approximately $3r$.
A family $\mathcal{P}$ of subgraphs of $G$ is called a {\it path cover} (resp. a {\it path partition}) of $G$ if $\bigcup _{P\in \mathcal{P}}V(P)=V(G)$ (resp. $\dot\bigcup _{P\in \mathcal{P}}V(P)=V(G)$) and every element of $\mathcal{P}$ is a path. The minimum cardinality of a path cover (resp. a path partition) of $G$ is denoted by ${\rm pc}(G)$ (resp. ${\rm pp}(G)$). In this paper, we characterize the forbidden subgraph conditions assuring us that ${\rm pc}(G)$ (or ${\rm pp}(G)$) is bounded by a constant. Our main results introduce a new Ramsey-type problem.
We show that there exists an absolute constant $A$ such that for each $k\ge2$ and every coloring of the edges of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph on $ Ar$ vertices with $r$ colors, one of the color classes contains a loose path of length three.
The following relaxation of the classical problem of determining Ramsey number of a fixed graph has first been proposed by Erdos, Hajnal and Rado over 50 years ago. Given a graph $G$ and an integer $t \geq 2$ determine the minimum number $N$ such that in any $t$-coloured complete graph on $N$ vertices there is a copy of $G$ using only edges of some $t-1$ colours. We determine the answer precisely when $G$ is a path.
Given a graph $H$, the size Ramsey number $r_e(H,q)$ is the minimal number $m$ for which there is a graph $G$ with $m$ edges such that every $q$-coloring of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. We study the size Ramsey number of the directed path of length $n$ in oriented graphs, where no antiparallel edges are allowed. We give nearly tight bounds for every fixed number of colors, showing that for every $q\geq 1 $ there are constants $c_1 = c_1(q),c_2$ such that $$\frac{c_1(q) n^{2q}(\log n)^{1/q}}{(\log\log n)^{(q+2)/q}} \leq r_e(\overrightarrow{P_n},q+1) \leq c_2 n^{2q}(\log {n})^2.$$ O…
For given graphs $G_1, G_2,\ldots, G_n$ and any integer $j$, the size of the multipartite Ramsey number $m_j(G_1, G_2,\ldots, G_n)$ is the smallest positive integer $t$ such that any $n$-coloring of the edges of $K_{j\times t}$ contains a monochromatic copy of $G_i$ in color $i$ for some $i$, $1 \leq i \leq n$, where $K_{j\times t}$ denotes the complete multipartite graph having $j$ classes with $t$ vertices per each class. In this paper we compute the size of the multipartite Ramsey number $m_j(K_{1,2}, P_4, nK_2)$ for any $j,n\geq 2$ and $m_j(nK_2,C_7)$, for any $j\leq4$ and $n\geq 2$.
Starting from an innocent Ramsey-theoretic question regarding directed paths in tournaments, we discover a series of rich and surprising connections that lead into the theory around a fundamental problem in Combinatorics: the Ruzsa-Szemerédi induced matching problem. Using these relationships, we prove that every coloring of the edges of the transitive $n$-vertex tournament using three colors contains a directed path of length at least $\sqrt{n} \cdot e^{\log^* n}$ which entirely avoids some color. We also expose connections to a family of constructions for Ramsey tournaments, and introduce an…
Given graphs $G$ and $H$ and a positive integer $k$, the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number}, denoted by $gr_{k}(G : H)$ is defined to be the minimum integer $n$ such that every coloring of $K_{n}$ using at most $k$ colors will contain either a rainbow copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. We consider this question in the cases where $G \in \{P_{4}, P_{5}\}$. In the case where $G = P_{4}$, we completely solve the Gallai-Ramsey question by reducing to the $2$-color Ramsey numbers. In the case where $G = P_{5}$, we conjecture that the problem reduces to the $3$-color Ramsey numbers and provide sev…
Given a positive integer $s$, a graph $G$ is $s$-Ramsey for a graph $H$, denoted $G\rightarrow (H)_s$, if every $s$-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The $s$-colour size-Ramsey number ${\hat{r}}_s(H)$ of a graph $H$ is defined to be ${\hat{r}}_s(H)=\min\{|E(G)|\colon G\rightarrow (H)_s\}$. We prove that, for all positive integers $k$ and $s$, we have ${\hat{r}}_s(P_n^k)=O(n)$, where $P_n^k$ is the $k$th power of the $n$-vertex path $P_n$.
For two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, the online Ramsey number $\tilde{r}(G_1,G_2)$ is the smallest number of edges that Builder draws on an infinite empty graph to guarantee that there is either a red copy of $G_1$ or a blue copy of $G_2$, under the condition that Builder draws one edge in each round and Painter immediately colors it red or blue. For online Ramsey numbers of paths, Cyman, Dzido, Lapinskas, and Lo conjectured that $\tilde{r}(P_4, P_{\ell+1}) = \lceil(7\ell+2)/5\rceil$ for all $\ell \ge 3$ [Electron. J. Combin. 22 (2015) #P1.15]. We verify the conjecture in this paper.
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a 3-uniform hypergraph. The multicolor Ramsey number $ r_k(\mathcal{H})$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every coloring of $ \binom{[n]}{3}$ with $k$ colors has a monochromatic copy of $\mathcal{H}$. Let $ \mathcal{L}$ be the loose 3-uniform path with 3 edges and $ \mathcal{M}$ denote the messy 3-uniform path with 3 edges; that is, let $\mathcal{L} = \{abc, cde, efg\}$ and $\mathcal{M} = \{ abc, bcd, def\}$. In this note we prove $ r_k(\mathcal{L}) < 1.54k$ and $ r_k(\mathcal{M}) < 1.6k$ for $k$ sufficiently large.
Let $H=(V,E)$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph. For each $1 \leq s \leq r-1$, an $s$-path ${\mathcal P}^{r,s}_n$ of length $n$ in $H$ is a sequence of distinct vertices $v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_{s+n(r-s)}$ such that $\{v_{1+i(r-s)},\ldots, v_{s+(i+1)(r-s)}\}\in E(H)$ for each $0 \leq i \leq n-1$.Recently, the Ramsey number of $1$-paths in uniform hypergraphs has received a lot of attention. In this paper, we consider the Ramsey number of $r/2-$paths for even $r$. Namely, we prove the following exact result: $R({\mathcal P}^{r,r/2}_n,{\mathcal P}^{r,r/2}_3)=R({\mathcal P}^{r,r/2}_n,{\mathcal P}^{r,r/2}_4)…
Recently, the authors gave Ramsey-type results for the path cover/partition number of graphs. In this paper, we continue the research about them focusing on digraphs, and find a relationship between the path cover/partition number and forbidden structures in digraphs. Let $D$ be a weakly connected digraph. A family $\mathcal{P}$ of subdigraphs of $D$ is called a {\it path cover} (resp. a {\it path partition}) of $D$ if $\bigcup _{P\in \mathcal{P}}V(P)=V(D)$ (resp. $\dot\bigcup _{P\in \mathcal{P}}V(P)=V(D)$) and every element of $\mathcal{P}$ is a directed path. The minimum cardinality of a pat…
A path $v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_m$ in a graph $G$ is $degree$-$monotone$ if $deg(v_1) \leq deg(v_2) \leq \cdots \leq deg(v_m)$ where $deg(v_i)$ is the degree of $v_i$ in $G$. Longest degree-monotone paths have been studied in several recent papers. Here we consider the Ramsey type problem for degree monotone paths. Denote by $M_k(m)$ the minimum number $M$ such that for all $n \geq M$, in any $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ there is some $1\leq j \leq k$ such that the graph formed by the edges colored $j$ has a degree-monotone path of order $m$. We prove several nontrivial upper and lower bounds for $M_k(…
Given a hypergraph $H$, the size-Ramsey number $\hat{r}_2(H)$ is the smallest integer $m$ such that there exists a graph $G$ with $m$ edges with the property that in any colouring of the edges of $G$ with two colours there is a monochromatic copy of $H$. We prove that the size-Ramsey number of the $3$-uniform tight path on $n$ vertices $P^{(3)}_n$ is linear in $n$, i.e., $\hat{r}_2(P^{(3)}_n) = O(n)$. This answers a question by Dudek, Fleur, Mubayi, and Rödl for $3$-uniform hypergraphs [On the size-Ramsey number of hypergraphs, J. Graph Theory 86 (2016), 417-434], who proved $\hat{r}_2(P^{(3)}…
We prove new upper bounds on the multicolour Ramsey numbers of paths and even cycles. It is well known that $(k-1)n+o(n)\leq R_k(P_n)\leq R_k(C_n)\leq kn+o(n)$. The upper bound was recently improved by Sárközy who showed that $R_k(C_n)\leq\left(k-\frac{k}{16k^3+1}\right)n+o(n)$. Here we show $R_k(C_n) \leq (k-\frac14)n +o(n)$, obtaining the first improvement to the coefficient of the linear term by an absolute constant.
The size-Ramsey number $R^{(k)}(H)$ of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is the minimum number of edges in a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with the property that every `$2$-edge coloring' of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. For $k\ge2$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$, a $k$-uniform tight path on $n$ vertices $P^{(k)}_{n}$ is defined as a $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices for which there is an ordering of its vertices such that the edges are all sets of $k$ consecutive vertices with respect to this order. We prove a lower bound on the size-Ramsey number of $k$-uniform tight paths, which is, consider…
The size-Ramsey number $\hat{R}(F,r)$ of a graph $F$ is the smallest integer $m$ such that there exists a graph $G$ on $m$ edges with the property that any colouring of the edges of $G$ with $r$ colours yields a monochromatic copy of $F$. In this short note, we give an alternative proof of the recent result of Krivelevich that $\hat{R}(P_n,r) = O((\log r)r^2 n)$. This upper bound is nearly optimal, since it is also known that $\hat{R}(P_n,r) = Ω(r^2 n)$.
Given two non-empty graphs $G,H$ and a positive integer $k$, the Gallai-Ramsey number $\operatorname{gr}_k(G:H)$ is defined as the minimum integer $N$ such that for all $n\geq N$, every $k$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow colored copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, we got some exact values or bounds for $\operatorname{gr}_k(P_5:H) \ (k\geq 3)$ if $H$ is a general graph or a star with extra independent edges or a pineapple.
Haxell et. al. [%P. Haxell, T. Luczak, Y. Peng, V. Rödl, A. %Ruciński, M. Simonovits, J. Skokan, The Ramsey number for hypergraph cycles I, J. Combin. Theory, Ser. A, 113 (2006), 67-83] proved that the 2-color Ramsey number of 3-uniform loose cycles on $2n$ vertices is asymptotically $\frac{5n}{2}$. Their proof is based on the method of Regularity Lemma. Here, without using this method, we generalize their result by determining the exact values of 2-color Ramsey numbers involving loose paths and cycles in 3-uniform hypergraphs. More precisely, we prove that for every $n\geq m\geq 3$, $R(\mathc…
The Ramsey number $r(H)$ of a graph $H$ is the minimum integer $n$ such that any two-coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. While this definition only asks for a single monochromatic copy of $H$, it is often the case that every two-edge-coloring of the complete graph on $r(H)$ vertices contains many monochromatic copies of $H$. The minimum number of such copies over all two-colorings of $K_{r(H)}$ will be referred to as the threshold Ramsey multiplicity of $H$. Addressing a problem of Harary and Prins, who were the first to systematically study …
We denote by $P_n$ the path on $n$ vertices and $W_m$ the wheel on $m+1$ vertices. Chen et al. and Zhang determined the values of $R(P_n,W_m)$ when $m\leq n+1$ and when $n+2\leq m\leq 2n$, respectively. In this paper we determine all the values of $R(P_n,W_m)$ for the left case $m\geq 2n+1$. Together with Chen et al's and Zhang's results, we give a complete solution to the problem of deter…
For any $r\geq 2$ and $k\geq 3$, the $r$-color size-Ramsey number $\hat R(\mathcal{G},r)$ of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{G}$ is the smallest integer $m$ such that there exists a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ on $m$ edges such that any coloring of the edges of $\mathcal{H}$ with $r$ colors yields a monochromatic copy of $\mathcal{G}$. Let $\mathcal{P}_{n,k-1}^{(k)}$ denote the $k$-uniform tight path on $n$ vertices. Dudek, Fleur, Mubayi and Rődl showed that the size-Ramsey number of tight paths $\hat R(\mathcal{P}_{n,k-1}^{(k)}, 2) = O(n^{k-1-α} (\log n)^{1+α})$ where $α= \frac{k-…
Given graphs $G$ and $H$ and a positive integer $q$ say that $G$ is $q$-Ramsey for $H$, denoted $G\rightarrow (H)_q$, if every $q$-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The size-Ramsey number $\hat{r}(H)$ of a graph $H$ is defined to be $\hat{r}(H)=\min\{|E(G)|\colon G\rightarrow (H)_2\}$. Answering a question of Conlon, we prove that, for every fixed $k$, we have $\hat{r}(P_n^k)=O(n)$, where $P_n^k$ is the $k$-th power of the $n$-vertex path $P_n$ (i.e. , the graph with vertex set $V(P_n)$ and all edges $\{u,v\}$ such that the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $P_n…
An oriented graph is a directed graph with no bi-directed edges, i.e. if $xy$ is an edge then $yx$ is not an edge. The oriented size Ramsey number of an oriented graph $H$, denoted by $r(H)$, is the minimum $m$ for which there exists an oriented graph $G$ with $m$ edges, such that every $2$-colouring of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper we prove that the oriented size Ramsey number of the directed paths on $n$ vertices satisfies $r(P_n) = Ω(n^2 \log n)$. This improves a lower bound by Ben-Eliezer, Krivelevich and Sudakov. It also matches an upper bound by Bucić and the au…
In this paper we prove a new result about partitioning coloured complete graphs and use it to determine certain Ramsey numbers exactly. The partitioning theorem we prove is that for k at least 1, in every edge colouring of a complete graph with the colours red and blue, it is possible to cover all the vertices with k disjoint red paths and a disjoint blue balanced complete (k+1)-partite graph. When the colouring is connected in red, we prove a stronger result - that it is possible to cover all the vertices with k red paths and a blue balanced complete (k+2)-partite graph. Using these results w…
Let $P$ denote a 3-uniform hypergraph consisting of 7 vertices $a,b,c,d,e,f,g$ and 3 edges $\{a,b,c\}, \{c,d,e\},$ and $\{e,f,g\}$. It is known that the $r$-color Ramsey number for $P$ is $R(P;r)=r+6$ for $r\le 7$. The proof of this result relies on a careful analysis of the Turán numbers for $P$. In this paper, we refine this analysis further and compute, for all $n$, the third and fourth order Turán numbers for $P$. With the help of the former, we confirm the formula $R(P;r)=r+6$ for $r\in\{8,9\}$.
The size Ramsey number $\hat{r}(F)$ of a graph $F$ is the smallest integer $m$ such that there exists a graph $G$ on $m$ edges with the property that any colouring of the edges of $G$ with two colours yields a monochromatic copy of $F$. In 1983, Beck provided a beautiful argument that shows that $\hat{r}(P_n)$ is linear, solving a problem of Erdős. In this short note, we provide an alternative but elementary proof of this fact that actually gives a better bound, namely, $\hat{r}(P_n) < 137n$ for $n$ sufficiently large.
We study the multicolor Ramsey numbers for paths and even cycles, $R_k(P_n)$ and $R_k(C_n)$, which are the smallest integers $N$ such that every coloring of the complete graph $K_N$ has a monochromatic copy of $P_n$ or $C_n$ respectively. For a long time, $R_k(P_n)$ has only been known to lie between $(k-1+o(1))n$ and $(k + o(1))n$. A recent breakthrough by Sárközy and later improvement by Davies, Jenssen and Roberts give an upper bound of $(k - \frac{1}{4} + o(1))n$. We improve the upper bound to $(k - \frac{1}{2}+ o(1))n$. Our approach uses structural insights in connected graphs without a l…
Let $P$ denote a 3-uniform hypergraph consisting of 7 vertices $a,b,c,d,e,f,g$ and 3 edges $\{a,b,c\}, \{c,d,e\},$ and $\{e,f,g\}$. It is known that the $r$-color Ramsey number for $P$ is $R(P;r)=r+6$ for $r\le 9$. The proof of this result relies on a careful analysis of the Turán numbers for $P$. In this paper, we refine this analysis further and compute the fifth order Turán number for $P$, for all $n$. Using this number for $n=16$, we confirm the formula $R(P;10)=16$.
For graphs $F_n$ and $G_n$ of order $n$, if $R(F_n, G_n)=(χ(G_n)-1)(n-1)+σ(G_n)$, then $F_n$ is said to be $G_n$-good, where $σ(G_n)$ is the minimum size of a color class among all proper vertex-colorings of $G_n$ with $χ(G_n)$ colors. Given $Δ(G_n)\le Δ$, it is shown that $P_n$ is asymptotically $G_n$-good if $α(G_n)\le\frac{n}{4}$.
Let $f(K_n, H, q)$ be the minimum number of colors needed to edge-color $K_n$ so that every copy of $H$ is colored with at least $q$ colors. Originally posed by Erdős and Shelah when $H$ is complete, the asymptotics of this extremal function have been extensively studied when $H$ is a complete graph or a complete balanced bipartite graph. Here we investigate this function for some other $H$, and in particular we determine the asymptotic behavior of $f(K_n, P_v, q)$ for almost all values of $v$ and $q$, where $P_v$ is a path on $v$ vertices.
Given a pair of graphs $G$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $R(G,H)$ is the smallest $N$ such that every red-blue coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_N$ contains a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$. If graph $G$ is connected, it is well known and easy to show that $R(G,H) \geq (|G|-1)(χ(H)-1)+σ(H)$, where $χ(H)$ is the chromatic number of $H$ and $σ$ the size of the smallest color class in a $χ(H)$-coloring of $H$. A graph $G$ is called $H$-good if $R(G,H)= (|G|-1)(χ(H)-1)+σ(H)$. The notion of Ramsey goodness was introduced by Burr and Erdős in 1983 and has been extensively studied si…
Consider a game played on the edge set of the infinite clique by two players, Builder and Painter. In each round, Builder chooses an edge and Painter colours it red or blue. Builder wins by creating either a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$ for some fixed graphs $G$ and $H$. The minimum number of rounds within which Builder can win, assuming both players play perfectly, is the on-line Ramsey number $\tilde{r}(G,H)$. In this paper, we consider the case where $G$ is a path $P_k$. We prove that $\tilde{r}(P_3, P_{\ell+1}) = \lceil 5\ell/4 \rceil = \tilde{r}(P_3, C_\ell)$ for all $\ell \ge 5$…
Let $G_1, G_2, ..., G_t$ be graphs. The multicolor Ramsey number $R(G_1, G_2, ..., G_t)$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that if the edges of complete graph $K_n$ are partitioned into $t$ disjoint color classes giving $t$ graphs $H_1,H_2,...,H_t$, then at least one $H_i$ has a subgraph isomorphic to $G_i$. In this paper, we prove that if $(n,m)\neq (3,3), (3,4)$ and $m\geq n$, then $R(P_3,P_n,P_m)=R(P_n,P_m)=m+\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor-1$. Consequently $R(P_3,mK_2,nK_2)=2m+n-1$ for $m\geq n\geq 3$.
An ordered graph is a simple graph with an ordering on its vertices. Define the ordered path $P_n$ to be the monotone increasing path with $n$ edges. The ordered size Ramsey number $\tilde{r}(P_r,P_s)$ is the minimum number $m$ for which there exists an ordered graph $H$ with $m$ edges such that every two-coloring of the edges of $H$ contains a red copy of $P_r$ or a blue copy of $P_s$. For $2\leq r\leq s$, we show $\frac{1}{8}r^2s\leq \tilde{r}(P_r,P_s)\leq Cr^2s(\log s)^3$, where $C>0$ is an absolute constant. This problem is motivated by the recent results of Bucić-Letzter-Sudakov and Letzt…
One formulation of the Erdos-Szekeres monotone subsequence theorem states that for any red/blue coloring of the edge set of the complete graph on $\{1, 2, \ldots, N\}$, there exists a monochromatic red $s$-clique or a monochromatic blue increasing path $P_n$ with $n$ vertices, provided $N >(s-1)(n-1)$. %We had previously shown that a suitable generalization of this problem to quadruple systems is essentially equivalent to classical diagonal hypergraph Ramsey numbers. Here, we prove a similar statement as above in the off-diagonal case for triple systems, with the quasipolynomial bound $N>2^{c(…
We prove that for all graphs with at most $(3.75-o(1))n$ edges there exists a 2-coloring of the edges such that every monochromatic path has order less than $n$. This was previously known to be true for graphs with at most $2.5n-7.5$ edges. We also improve on the best-known lower bounds in the $r$-color case.
Recently, determining the Ramsey numbers of loose paths and cycles in uniform hypergraphs has received considerable attention. It has been shown that the $2$-color Ramsey number of a $k$-uniform loose cycle $\mathcal{C}^k_n$, $R(\mathcal{C}^k_n,\mathcal{C}^k_n)$, is asymptotically $\frac{1}{2}(2k-1)n$. Here we conjecture that for any $n\geq m\geq 3$ and $k\geq 3,$ $$R(\mathcal{P}^k_n,\mathcal{P}^k_m)=R(\mathcal{P}^k_n,\mathcal{C}^k_m)=R(\mathcal{C}^k_n,\mathcal{C}^k_m)+1=(k-1)n+\lfloor\frac{m+1}{2}\rfloor.$$ Recently the case $k=3$ is proved by the authors. In this paper, first we show that th…
The hypergraph Ramsey number of two $3$-uniform hypergraphs $G$ and $H$, denoted by $R(G,H)$, is the least integer $N$ such that every red-blue edge-coloring of the complete $3$-uniform hypergraph on $N$ vertices contains a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$. The Fano plane $\mathbb{F}$ is the unique 3-uniform hypergraph with seven edges on seven vertices in which every pair of vertices is contained in a unique edge. There is a simple construction showing that $R(H,\mathbb{F}) \ge 2(v(H)-1) + 1.$ Hypergraphs $H$ for which the equality holds are called $\mathbb{F}$-good. Conlon asked to dete…
We say that a graph $G$ is Ramsey for $H_1$ versus $H_2$, and write $G \to (H_1,H_2)$, if every red-blue colouring of the edges of $G$ contains either a red copy of $H_1$ or a blue copy of $H_2$. In this paper we study the threshold for the event that the Erdős--Rényi random graph $G(N,p)$ is Ramsey for a clique versus a path. We show that $$G\big( (1 + \varepsilon) rn,p \big) \to (K_{r+1},P_n)$$ with high probability if $p \gg n^{-2 / (r + 1)}$, and $$G\big( rn + t, p \big) \to (K_{r+1},P_n)$$ with high probability if $p \gg n^{-2 / (r + 2)}$ and $t \gg 1/p$. Both of these results are sharp (…
