Matter makes a transition from non-relativistic to relativistic regime, as it falls onto a black hole. We employ a relativistic equation of state, abbreviated as RC, to study multi-species fluid flow around black holes. We show that pair-plasma fluid around a black hole is thermally not relativistic. In order to make it relativistic, a finite baryon loading is necessary. As a consequence of this, pair-plasma flow do not suffer centrifugal pressure driven shock in accretion. However, fluid with finite baryon content may undergo shock transition.
The physical mechanism responsible for driving accretion flows in astrophysical accretion disks is commonly thought to be related to the development of plasma instabilities and turbulence. A key question is therefore the determination of consistent equilibrium configurations for accretion-disk plasmas and investigation of their stability properties. In the case of collisionless plasmas kinetic theory provides the appropriate theoretical framework. This paper presents a kinetic description of low-frequency and long-wavelength axisymmetric electromagnetic perturbations in non-relativistic, stron…
Astrophysical plasmas in accretion discs are usually treated in the framework of fluid or MHD approaches but there are some situations where these treatments become inadequate and one needs to revert to the more fundamental underlying kinetic theory. This occurs when the plasma becomes effectively collisionless or weakly-collisional such as, for example, in radiatively inefficient accretion flows onto black holes. In this paper, we lay down the basics of kinetic theory in these contexts. In particular, we formulate the kinetic theory for quasi-stationary collisionless accretion disc plasmas in…
We present a magneto-hydrodynamic model developed for investigations of advective non-stationary, asymmetric Keplerian accretion disks in the normal magnetic field. The introduced model allows us to trace the evolution in different fixed moments and to get detailed description of the self-structuring of the disk. We have introduced "meeting coefficients" that define the feedback. It determines the impact from nonlinear effects have over the structure of the flow. We have obtained solutions for the radial structure of the disk for two crucial moments of its evolution.
Recent operation of LOFAR by Hassall et al has produced severe constraints on the size and altitude of the 40 MHZ emission region in this pulsar. It is shown that these limits, given a limited number of unexceptionable assumptions, demonstrate that an electron-positron plasma cannot be the source of the emission. A physically-acceptable plasma source composed of protons and ions arises naturally in pulsars having positive corotational polar-cap charge density. Acceptance of this would greatly clarify the classification of pulsar types within the whole.
We consider the behavior of matter in the accretion column that emerges under accretion in binary systems near the surface of a white dwarf. The plasma heated in a standing shock wave near the white dwarf surface efficiently radiates in the X-ray energy band. We suggest a method for estimating post-shock plasma parameters, such as the density, temperature, and height of the hot zone, from the power spectrum of its X-ray luminosity variability. The method is based on the fact that the flux variability amplitude for the hot region at various Fourier frequencies depends significantly on its cooli…
The luminosity of X-ray pulsars powered by accretion onto magnetized neutron stars covers a wide range over a few orders of magnitude. The brightest X-ray pulsars recently discovered as pulsating ultraluminous X-ray sources reach accretion luminosity above $10^{40}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$ which exceeds the Eddington value more than by a factor of ten. Most of the energy is released within small regions in the vicinity of magnetic poles of accreting neutron star - in accretion columns. Because of the extreme energy release within a small volume accretion columns of bright X-ray pulsars are ones of …
We investigate the vertical structure and elements distribution of neutrino-dominated accretion flows around black holes in spherical coordinates with the reasonable nuclear statistical equilibrium. According our calculations, heavy nuclei tend to be produced in a thin region near the disk surface, whose mass fractions are primarily determined by the accretion rate and the vertical distribution of temperature and density. In this thin region, we find that $^{56}\rm Ni$ is dominant for the flow with low accretion rate (e.g., $0.05 $$M_{\odot}$ $\rm s^{-1}$) but $^{56}\rm Fe$ is dominant for the…
We studied the outflow behaviour from accretion discs around black holes taking into account the vertical equilibrium accretion flow model. The outflow rate is found to depend crucially on flow composition. Our approach is to study the outflow behaviour as function of inflow around black holes with an equation of state which allows flow to be thermally relativistic close to black holes and non relativistic far away from black holes. We studied shock ejection model. A pure electron positron pair flow never undergoes shock transition while presence of some baryons (common in outflows and jets) m…
The composition of the relativistic plasma produced in active galactic nuclei and ejected via powerful jets into the interstellar/intergalactic medium is still a major unsettled issue. It might be a positron-electron plasma in case the plasma was created by pair production in the intense photon fields near accreting super-massive black holes. Alternatively, it might be an electron-proton plasma in case magnetic fields lift and accelerate the thermal gas of accretion discs into relativistic jets as the recent detection of $γ$-rays from blazars indicates. Despite various attempts to unambiguousl…
We have analyzed the X-ray spectra of all known Ultra Compact X-ray Binaries (UCXBs), with the purpose of constraining the chemical composition of their accretion disk and donor star. Our investigation was focused on the presence (or absence) of the Fe K$α$ emission line, which was used as the probe of chemical composition of the disk, based on previously established theoretical predictions for the reflection of X-ray radiation off the surface of C/O-rich or He-rich accretion disks in UCXBs. We have contrasted the results of our spectral analysis to the history of type I X-ray bursts from thes…
Non-solar composition of the donor star in ultra-compact X-ray binaries may have a pronounced effect on the fluorescent lines appearing in their spectra due to reprocessing of primary radiation by the accretion disk and the white dwarf surface. We show that the most dramatic and easily observable consequence of the anomalous C/O abundance, is the significant, by more than an order of magnitude, attenuation of the Ka line of iron. It is caused by screening of the presence of iron by oxygen - in the C/O dominated material the main interaction process for a E ~ 7keV photon is absorption by oxygen…
We present results of a study of the fast timing variability of the magnetic cataclysmic variable (mCV) EX Hya. It was previously shown that one may expect the rapid flux variability of mCVs to be smeared out at timescales shorter than the cooling time of hot plasma in the post shock region of the accretion curtain near the WD surface. Estimates of the cooling time and the mass accretion rate, thus provide us with a tool to measure the density of the post-shock plasma and the cross-sectional area of the accretion funnel at the WD surface. We have probed the high frequencies in the aperiodic no…
Matter falling onto a black hole is trans-relativistic, transonic, and close to the horizon it is sub-Keplerian. Such a flow shows the existence of multiple critical point, shocks etc. Employing relativistic equation of state and realistic composition, it has been shown that the solution strongly depend on the composition of the fluid. Electron-positron fluid is the least relativistic, to the extent that multiple critical points, shocks etc do not form. The most relativistic fluid is the one whose ratio of proton to electron number density is ~ 0.2. Since the solution strongly depend on compos…
It has been recently shown that transonic electron positron fluid is the least relativistic, compared to the fluid containing finite proportion of baryons. We compute spectra from these flows in general relativity (GR) including the effect of light bending. We consider the bremsstrahlung process to supply the seed photons. We choose accretion in the advective domain, and for simplicity the radial accretion or Bondi type accretion. We show that electron positron accreting flow produces the softest spectra and the lowest luminosity.
A review of wind accretion in HMXB is presented. We focus on different regimes of quasi-spherical accretion onto a NS: supersonic (Bondi) accretion, which takes place when the captured matter cools down rapidly and falls supersonically towards the NS magnetosphere, and subsonic (settling) accretion which occurs when the plasma remains hot until it meets the magnetospheric boundary. The two regimes are separated by a limit in X-ray luminosity at about 4 10^{36} erg/s. In subsonic accretion, which works a hot quasi-spherical shell must form around the magnetosphere, and the actual accretion rate…
The theory of quasi-spherical subsonic accretion onto magnetized rotating neutron star is reviewed. Different regimes of quasi-spherical accretion onto a neutron star: supersonic (Bondi) accretion, which takes place when the captured matter cools down rapidly and falls supersonically towards the neutron-star magnetosphere, and subsonic (settling) accretion which occurs when the plasma remains hot until it meets the magnetospheric boundary. In subsonic accretion, which works at X-ray luminosities $\lesssim 4\times 10^{36}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, a hot quasi-spherical shell must form around the magnetosp…
Optically thin accretion plasmas can reach ion temperatures $T_{\rm i} \geq 10^{10}$K and thus trigger nuclear reactions. Using a large nuclear interactions network, we studied the radial evolution of the chemical composition of the accretion flow toward the black hole and computed the emissivity in nuclear $γ$-ray lines. In the advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) regime, CNO and heavier nuclei are destroyed before reaching the last stable orbit. The overall luminosity in the de-excitation lines for a solar composition of plasma can be as high as few times $10^{-5}$ the accretion luminos…
In this paper, we study magnetized winds described by variable adiabatic index equation of state in Paczyński \& Wiita pseudo-Newtonian potential. We identify the flow solutions with the parameter space of the flow. We also confirm that the physical wind solution is the one which passes through the slow, Alfvén and fast critical points. We study the dependence of the wind solution on the Bernoulli parameter $E$ and the total angular momentum $L$. The adiabatic index, which is a function of temperature and composition, was found to be variable in all the outflow solutions. For the same values o…
We present a stationary, axisymmetric, self-similar semi-analytic model of magnetically dominated jet plasma based on force-free regions of a relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation. We use this model to illustrate how the composition of relativistic jet plasma can be determined, with special attention to the example of M87. In particular, we compute synthetic Stokes maps in e-e+p plasmas with various positron-to-proton ratios using synchrotron emission models scaling the partial pressure of electrons and positrons emitting at the observed frequency to the magnetic pressure, taking into ac…
We describe a new analytical model for the accretion of particles from a rotating and charged spherical shell of dilute collisionless plasma onto a rotating and charged black hole. By assuming a continuous injection of particles at the spherical shell and by treating the black hole and a featureless accretion disc located in the equatorial plane as passive sinks of particles we build a stationary accretion model. This may then serve as a toy model for plasma feeding an accretion disc around a charged and rotating black hole. Therefore, our new model is a direct generalization of the analytical…
We study the properties of a steady, multi-species, low angular momentum accretion flow around a Schwarzschild black hole. Each species is described by a relativistic equation of state. We find that the transonic properties depend strongly on the composition of the flow. We find that an electron-positron pair plasma is the least relativistic one. This flow produces only one sonic point very close to the event horizon and does not show multiple critical points for any angular momentum or energy. When the baryons are present, the number of critical points depend on the specific energy content. S…
We examine plasma composition of jets in active galactic nuclei through the comparison of the total pressure ($P$) with partial pressures of electrons and protons in a cocoon. The total pressure is estimated from the analysis of an expanding cocoon dynamics. We determine the average kinetic energy per particle for several representative cases of particle energy distribution such as one- and two-temperature thermal plasmas and non-thermal electrons by evaluating the dissipation of total kinetic energy of the jet into the internal energy of cocoon plasma. The number density of the total electron…
Magnetic fields lines are trapped in black hole event horizons by accreting plasma. If the trapped field lines are lightly loaded with plasma, then their motion is controlled by their footpoints on the horizon and thus by the spin of the black hole. In this paper, we investigate the boundary layer between lightly loaded polar field lines and a dense, equatorial accretion flow. We present an analytic model for aligned prograde and retrograde accretion systems and argue that there is significant shear across this "jet-disk boundary" at most radii for all black hole spins. Specializing to retrogr…
Recent observations suggest that in black hole X-ray binaries jet/outflow formation is related to the hot plasma in the vicinity of the black hole, either in the form of an advection-dominated accretion flow at low accretion rates or in a disk corona at high accretion rates. We test the viability of this scenario for supermassive black holes using two samples of active galactic nuclei distinguished by the presence (radio-strong) and absence (radio-weak) of well-collimated, relativistic jets. Each is centered on a narrow range of black hole mass but spans a very broad range of Eddington ratios,…
Thanks to recurrent observations of the black hole binary Cyg X-1 carried out over 15 years the INTEGRAL satellite has collected the largest data set in the hard X-ray band for this source. We have analyzed these data, complemented by data collected by other X-ray satellites and radio flux at 15 GHz. To characterize the spectral and variability properties of the system we have examined parameters such as the hard X-ray flux, photon index and fractional variability. Our main result is that the 2D distribution of the photon index and flux determined for the 22-100 keV band forms six clusters. Th…
A review of wind accretion in high-mass X-ray binaries is presented. We focus attention to different regimes of quasi-spherical accretion onto the neutron star: the supersonic (Bondi) accretion, which takes place when the captured matter cools down rapidly and falls supersonically toward NS magnetospghere, and subsonic (settling) accretion which occurs when plasma remains hot until it meets the magnetospheric boundary. Two regimes of accretion are separated by an X-ray luminosity of about $4\times10^{36}$ erg/s. In the subsonic case, which sets in at low luminosities, a hot quasi-spherical she…
Relativistic jets are launched from black hole (BH) X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei when the disk accretion rate is below a certain limit (i.e., when the ratio of the accretion rate to the Eddingtion accretion rate, $\dot{m}$, is below about 0.01) but quenched when above. We propose a new paradigm to explain this observed coupling between the jet and the accretion disk by investigating the extraction of the rotational energy of a BH when it is surrounded by different types of accretion disk. At low accretion rates (e.g., when $\dot{m}\lesssim0.1$), the accretion near the event horizo…
The stability of thermonuclear burning of hydrogen and helium accreted onto neutron stars is strongly dependent on the mass accretion rate. The burning behavior is observed to change from Type I X-ray bursts to stable burning, with oscillatory burning occurring at the transition. Simulations predict the transition at a ten times higher mass accretion rate than observed. Using numerical models we investigate how the transition depends on the hydrogen, helium, and CNO mass fractions of the accreted material, as well as on the nuclear reaction rates of triple alpha and the hot-CNO breakout reacti…
Faraday rotation (FR) is widely used to infer the orientation and strength of magnetic fields in astrophysical plasmas. Although the absence of electron-positron pairs is a plausible assumption in many astrophysical environments, the magnetospheres of pulsars and black holes and their associated jets may involve a significant pair plasma fraction. This motivates being mindful of the effect of positrons on FR. Here we derive and interpret exact expressions of FR for a neutral plasma of arbitrary composition. We focus on electron-ion-positron plasmas in which charge neutrality is maintained by a…
A theoretical treatment is presented of kinetic equilibria in accretion discs around compact objects, for cases where the plasma can be considered as collisionless. The plasma is assumed to be axi-symmetric and to be acted on by gravitational and electromagnetic fields; in this paper, the particular case is considered where the magnetic field admits a family of toroidal magnetic surfaces, which are locally mutually-nested and closed. It is pointed out that there exist asymptotic kinetic equilibria represented by generalized bi-Maxwellian distribution functions and characterized by primarily to…
It has been argued in previous papers that an ion-proton plasma is formed at the polar caps of neutron stars with positive polar-cap corotational charge density. The present paper does not offer a theory of the development of turbulence from the unstable Langmuir modes that grow in the outward accelerated plasma, but attempts to describe in qualitative terms the factors relevant to the emission of polarized radiation at frequencies below 1 - 10 GHz. The work of Karastergiou and Johnston is of particular importance in this respect because it demonstrates in high-resolution measurements of the p…
We propose a novel theoretical model to describe a physical identity of the soft X-ray excess, ubiquitously detected in many Seyfert galaxies, by considering a steady-state, axisymmetric plasma accretion within the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) around a black hole (BH) accretion disk. We extend our earlier theoretical investigations on general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) accretion which has implied that the accreting plasma can develop into a standing shock for suitable physical conditions causing the downstream flow to be sufficiently hot due to shock compression. We num…
We implement the KORAL code to perform two sets of very long general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations of an axisymmetric optically thin magnetized flow around a non-rotating black hole: one with a new term in the electromagnetic field tensor due to the radiation pressure felt by the plasma electrons on the comoving frame of the electron-proton plasma, and one without. The source of the radiation is the accretion flow itself. Without the new term, the system evolves to a standard accretion flow due to the development of the magneto-rotational instability (MRI). With the ne…
The vicinity of the supermassive black hole associated with the compact radio source Sagittarius (Sgr) A* is believed to dominate the observed emission at wavelengths near and shorter than $\sim$ 1 millimeter. We show that a general relativistic accretion flow, heated via the plasma wave heating mechanism, is consistent with the polarization and recent mm-VLBI observations of Sgr A* for an inclination angle of $\sim 45^\circ$, position angle of $\sim 140^\circ$, and spin $\lesssim 0.9$. Structure in visibilities produced by the black hole shadow can potentially be observed by 1.3 mm-VLBI on th…
A kinetic treatment is developed for collisionless magnetized plasmas occurring in high-temperature, low-density astrophysical accretion disks, such as are thought to be present in some radiatively-inefficient accretion flows onto black holes. Quasi-stationary configurations are investigated, within the framework of a Vlasov-Maxwell description. The plasma is taken to be axisymmetric and subject to the action of slowly time-varying gravitational and electromagnetic fields. The magnetic field is assumed to be characterized by a family of locally nested but open magnetic surfaces. The slow colli…
We present a discussion of two-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) configurations, concerning the equilibria of accretion disks of a strongly magnetized astrophysical object. We set up a viscoresistive scenario which generalizes previous two-dimensional analyses by reconciling the ideal MHD coupling of the vertical and the radial equilibria within the disk with the standard mechanism of the angular momentum transport, relying on dissipative properties of the plasma configuration. The linear features of the considered model are analytically developed and the non-linear configuration problem…
Recent advances in general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations have expanded and improved our understanding of the dynamics of black-hole accretion disks. However, current simulations do not capture the thermodynamics of electrons in the low density accreting plasma. This poses a significant challenge in predicting accretion flow images and spectra from first principles. Because of this, simplified emission models have often been used, with widely different configurations (e.g., disk- versus jet-dominated emission), and were able to account for the observed spectral properties of accr…
AIMS. We investigate the stability and dynamics of accretion shocks in CTTSs, considering the case of beta >= 1 in the post-shock region. In these cases the 1D approximation is not valid and a multi-dimensional MHD approach is necessary. METHODS. We model an accretion stream propagating through the atmosphere of a CTTS and impacting onto its chromosphere, by performing 2D axisymmetric MHD simulations. The model takes into account the stellar magnetic field, the gravity, the radiative cooling, and the thermal conduction (including the effects of heat flux saturation). RESULTS. The dynamics and …
At steady low-luminosity states, Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs) can be at the stage of quasi-spherical settling accretion onto slowly rotating magnetized NS from the OB-companion winds. At this stage, a hot quasi-static shell is formed above the magnetosphere, the plasma entry rate into magnetosphere is controlled by (inefficient) radiative plasma cooling, and the accretion rate onto the NS is suppressed by a factor of \sim 30 relative to the Bondi-Hoyle-Littleton value. Changes in the local wind velocity and density can only slightly increase the mass accretion rate (a factor of \si…
The correlated and coupled dynamics of accretion and outflow around black holes (BHs) are essentially governed by the fundamental laws of conservation as outflow extracts matter, momentum and energy from the accretion region. Here we analyzed a robust form of 2.5-dimensional viscous, resistive, advective magnetized accretion-outflow coupling in BH systems, in the mean field magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) regime. We solve the complete set of coupled MHD conservation equations self-consistently, through invoking a generalized polynomial expansion in two dimensions. We perform a critical analysis of…
I outline the theory of accretion onto black holes, and its application to observed phenomena such as X-ray binaries, active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. The dynamics as well as radiative signatures of black hole accretion depend on interactions between the relatively simple black-hole spacetime and complex radiation, plasma and magnetohydrodynamical processes in the surrounding gas. I will show how transient accretion processes could provide clues to these interactions. Larger global magnetohydrodynamic simulations as well as simulations incorporating plasma…
In binary systems, the helium accretion onto carbon-oxygen (CO) white dwarfs (WDs) plays a vital role in many astrophysical scenarios, especially in supernovae type Ia. Moreover, ignition density for accretion rate $\dot{M} \lesssim 10^{-9} M_{\odot}$ $yr^{-1}$ in helium accreting CO white dwarfs decides the triggering mechanism of a supernova explosion which could be either off-centre helium flash or central carbon flash. We aim to study the accretion of helium with a slow accretion rate $5 \times 10^{-10} M_{\odot}$ $yr^{-1}$ onto relatively cool and hot white dwarfs of different abundances …
Non-ideal MHD effects may play a significant role in determining the dynamics, thermal properties, and observational signatures of radiatively inefficient accretion flows onto black holes. In particular, particle acceleration during magnetic reconnection events may influence black hole spectra and flaring properties. We use representative GRMHD simulations of black hole accretion flows to identify and explore the structures and properties of current sheets as potential sites of magnetic reconnection. In the case of standard and normal (SANE) disks, we find that, in the reconnection sites, the …
We present a generally applicable formalism for modeling the emission, absorption, reflection, and reprocessing of radiation by moving plasma streams close to a Kerr Black hole. The formalism can be used to investigate the observational signatures of a wide range of phenomena, including: (i) the reflection of coronal X-ray radiation off plasma plunging from the inner edge of a black hole accretion disk towards the black hole; (ii) the reflection of coronal X-ray emission off the upper layers of a geometrically thick accretion flow; (iii) the illumination of the accretion disk by a corona movin…
Photons propagating in a plasma acquire an effective mass $μ$, which is given by the plasma frequency and which scales with the square root of the plasma density. As noted previously by Conlon and Herdeiro, for electron number densities $n_e\sim 10^{-3}$ cm$^{-3}$ (such as those measured in the interstellar medium) the effective mass induced by the plasma is $μ\sim 10^{-12}$ eV. This would cause superradiant instabilities for spinning black holes of a few tens of solar masses. An obvious problem with this picture is that densities in the vicinity of black holes are much higher than in the inte…
The distribution of Helium in the intracluster medium (ICM) permeating galaxy clusters is not well constrained due to the very high plasma temperature. Therefore, the plasma is often assumed to be homogeneous. A non-uniform Helium distribution can however lead to biases when measuring key cluster parameters. This has motivated one-dimensional models that evolve the ICM composition assuming that the effects of magnetic fields can be parameterized or ignored. Such models for non-isothermal clusters show that Helium can sediment in the cluster core leading to a peak in concentration offset from t…
A new experimental set-up designed to investigate the accretion dynamics in newly born stars is presented. It takes advantage of a magnetically collimated stream produced by coupling a laser-generated expanding plasma to a $2\times 10^{5}~{G}\ (20~{T})$ externally applied magnetic field. The stream is used as the accretion column and is launched onto an obstacle target that mimics the stellar surface. This setup has been used to investigate in details the accretion dynamics, as reported in [G. Revet et al., Science Advances 3, e1700982 (2017), arXiv:1708.02528}. Here, the characteristics of th…
Context. High resolution X-ray observations of classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) show a soft X-ray excess due to high density plasma (n_e=10^11-10^13 cm^-3). This emission has been attributed to shock-heated accreting material impacting onto the stellar surface. Aims. We investigate the observability of the shock-heated accreting material in the X-ray band as a function of the accretion stream properties (velocity, density, and metal abundance) in the case of plasma-beta<<1 in the post-shock zone. Methods. We use a 1-D hydrodynamic model describing the impact of an accretion stream onto the chro…
