Combining density-functional theory calculations with a classical Monte Carlo method, we show that for B2-type FeCo compounds tetragonal distortion gives rise to a strong reduction of the Curie temperature $T_{\mathrm{C}}$. The $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ monotonically decreases from 1575 K (for $c/a=1$) to 940 K (for $c/a=\sqrtwo$). We find that the nearest neighbor Fe-Co exchange interaction is sufficient to explain the $c/a$ behavior of the $T_{\mathrm{C}}$. Combination of high magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy with a moderate $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ value suggests tetragonal FeCo grown on the Rh substrate with $c/a=1.24$ to be a promising material for heat-assisted magnetic recording applications.
We determine from first-principles the Curie temperature Tc for bulk Co in the hcp, fcc, bcc, and tetragonalized bct phases, for FeCo alloys, and for bcc and bct Fe. For bcc-Co, Tc=1420 K is predicted. This would be the highest Curie temperature among the Co phases, suggesting that bcc-Co/MgO/bcc-Co tunnel junctions offer high magnetoresistance ratios even at room temperature. The Curie temperatures are calculated by mapping ab initio results to a Heisenberg model, which is solved by a Monte Carlo method.
Magnons play an important role in fast precessional magnetization reversal processes serving as a heat bath for dissipation of the Zeeman energy and thus being responsible for the relaxation of magnetization. Employing \emph{ab initio} many-body perturbation theory we studied the magnon spectra of the tetragonal FeCo compounds considering three different experimental $c/a$ ratios, $c/a=$1.13, 1.18, and 1.24 corresponding to FeCo grown on Pd, Ir, and Rh, respectively. We find that for all three cases the short-wave-length magnons are strongly damped and tetragonal distortion gives rise to a sig…
We study theoretically the influence of the temperature and disorder on the spin wave spectrum of the magnonic crystal Fe$_{1-c}$Co$_{c}$. Our formalism is based on the analysis of a Heisenberg Hamiltonian by means of the wave vector and frequency dependent transverse magnetic susceptibility. The exchange integrals entering the model are obtained from the \emph{ab initio} magnetic force theorem. The coherent potential approximation is employed to treat the disorder and random phase approximation in order to account for the softening of the magnon spectrum at finite temperatures. The alloy turn…
It is highly desirable to combine the full spin polarization of carriers with modern semiconductor technology for spintronic applications. For this purpose, one needs good crystalline ferromagnetic (or ferrimagnetic) semiconductors with high Curie temperatures. Rutile CrO$_2$ is a half-metallic spintronic material with Curie temperature 394 K and can have nearly-full spin polarization at room temperature. Here, we find through first-principles investigation that when a biaxial compressive stress is applied on rutile CrO$_2$, the density of states at the Fermi level decreases with the in-plane …
Structural, vibrational and dielectric properties of (Pb1-xBix)(Ti1-xMnx)O3 (PBTM) (0 x 0.50) polycrystalline ceramics have been examined as a function of temperature. Synchrotron-based powder x-ray diffraction was employed to confirm phase purity and crystal structure of samples. Tetragonality (c/a ratio) of the PBTM system exhibit an increase 1.065, 1.066 for x = 0.06 and 0.09 compositions respectively, compare to 1.064 for x = 0 sample. Curie point was found ~763 K and 773 K for x = 0.06 and 0.09 samples respectively. Though, tetragonality start to decreasing from samples with x 0.18, Curie…
A comprehensive study of the total energy of manganese-rich Heusler compounds using density functional theory is presented. Starting from a large set of cubic parent systems, the response to tetragonal distortions is studied in detail. We single out the systems that remain cubic from those that most likely become tetragonal. The driving force of the tetragonal distortion and its effect on the magnetic properties, especially where they deviate from the Slater--Pauling rule, as well as the trends in the Curie temperatures, are highlighted. By means of partial densities of states, the electronic …
On the basis of density functional theory electronic band structure calculations using the augmented spherical wave method, the electronic and magnetic properties of the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases of Ca3Mn2O7 were investigated and the spin exchange interactions of the orthorhombic phase were analyzed. Our calculations show that the magnetic insulating states are more stable than the non-magnetic metallic state for both polymorphs of Ca3Mn2O7, the orthorhombic phase is more stable than the tetragonal phase, and the ground state of the orthorhombic phase is antiferromagnetic. The total e…
This work reports on first principles calculations of the electronic and magnetic structure of tetragonal Heusler compounds with the composition Rh$_2$Fe$_{x}$Co$_{1-x}$Sb ($0\leq x\leq1$). It is found that the magnetic moments increase from 2 to 3.4~$μ_B$ and the Curie temperature decreases from 500 to 464~K with increasing Fe content $x$. The $3d$ transition metals make the main contribution to the magnetic moments, whereas Rh contributes only approximately 0.2~$μ_B$ per atom, independent of the composition. The paper focuses on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the borderline compounds R…
Several Niobium oxides of formula Ba2LnFeNb4O15 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) with the Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze (TTB) structure have been synthesised by conventional solid-state methods. The Neodymium, Samarium and Europium compounds are ferroelectric with Curie temperature ranging from 320 to 440K. The Praseodymium and Gadolinium compounds behave as relaxors below 170 and 300 K respectively. The Praseodymium, Neodymium, Samarium, Europium and Gadolinium compounds exhibit magnetic hysteresis loops at room temperature originating from traces of a barium ferrite secondary phase. The presence o…
Piezoelectric and ferroelectric ceramics with a high Curie temperature (Tc) have attracted a growing attention owning to their applications under severe environments. In this work, phase structure, dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of (0.975-x)BiScO3-xPbTiO3-0.025Pb(Cd1/3Nb2/3)O3 ceramics (x = 0.58-0.64) were studied. A composition-induced structural transformation occurs from rhombohedral phase to tetragonal phase through an intermediate monoclinic phase with the increasing PT concentration. The relationship between structure and electrical properties of the system were d…
Metallic Mn-based alloys with a nearest-neighbor Mn-Mn distance greater than 0.4 nm exhibit large, well-localized magnetic moments. Here we investigate the magnetism of tetragonal Au4Mn with a Curie temperature of 385 K, where manganese has a spin moment of 4.1 muB and its orbital moment is quenched. Since 80% of the atoms are gold, the spin orbit interaction is strong and Au4Mn exhibits uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy with surface maze domains at room temperature. The magnetic hardness parameter of 1.0 is sufficient to maintain the magnetization along the c-axis for a sample of any sha…
Ferroelectric ceramics (Ba0.85Ca0.15)(Ti0.9Zr0.1-xSnx)O3 (x=0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06) were prepared by a sol-gel method. Structural investigation revealed the co-existence of tetragonal (P4mm) and orthorhombic (Pmm2) symmetries at room temperature for the undoped ceramic, while only a tetragonal structure (P4mm) was observed for the doped ceramics. Dielectric measurements indicate a dielectric relaxation process at high temperatures which is essentially related to the hopping of oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, a down shifting of the Curie temperature (TC) with increasing Sn4+ doping rate has been…
The aim of this article is to decrease the crystallization temperature of the tetragonal perovskite PbTiO3 nanopowders below the PbTiO3 Curie temperature. At the beginning of our study, the calcination temperature was selected based on the thermal analysis of the PbTiO3 gels, came out at 680°C. However, reconsidering the thermal properties of the PbTiO3 gel revealed the possibility of the formation of single tetragonal perovskite phase at lower temperatures. Both X-Ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy investigations showed that well crystalline pure phase PbTiO3 nanopowders hav…
Understanding the interplay between nematicity, magnetism and superconductivity is pivotal for elucidating the physics of iron-based superconductors. Here we use neutron scattering to probe magnetic and nematic orders throughout the phase diagram of NaFe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$As, finding that while both static antiferromagnetic and nematic orders compete with superconductivity, the onset temperatures for these two orders remain well-separated approaching the putative quantum critical points. We uncover local orthorhombic distortions that persist well above the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural tran…

Polycrystalline samples of Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2, Sr2Mn3As2O2, and Sr2Zn2MnAs2O2 were synthesized. Their temperature- and applied magnetic field-dependent structural, transport, thermal, and magnetic properties were characterized by means of x-ray and neutron diffraction, electrical resistivity rho, heat capacity, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility measurements. These compounds have a body-centered-tetragonal crystal structure (space group I4/mmm) that consists of MO2 (M = Zn and/or Mn) oxide layers similar to the CuO2 layers in high superconducting transition temperature Tc cuprate superconduc…
Energetics of the fcc ($γ$) - bcc ($α$) lattice transformation by the Bain tetragonal deformation is calculated for both magnetically ordered and paramagnetic (disordered local moment) states of iron. The first-principle computational results manifest a relevance of the magnetic order in a scenario of the $γ$ - $α$ transition and reveal a special role of the Curie temperature of $α$-Fe, $T_C$, where a character of the transformation is changed. At a cooling down to the temperatures $T < T_C$ one can expect that the transformation is developed as a lattice instability whereas for $T > T_C$ it f…
The spin-glass behavior in the ferromagnetic phase of $\mathrm{Tm_2Cu_2In}$ was investigated by dc-, ac-magnetization, and non-equilibrium dynamics characterizations. Arc-melted polycrystalline compound of $\mathrm{Tm_2Cu_2In}$ crystallizes in $\mathrm{Mo_2FeB_2}$-type tetragonal structure (space group $P_4/mbm$). The temperature variation dc-magnetization exhibits a ferromagnetic behavior with Curie temperature $T_C$ = 32.5 K. The zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetic curves show a thermomagnetic irreversible behavior below $T_C$. The field dependence of irreversible temperat…
We report the discovery of Ce$_3$Ir$_4$Ge$_{13}$, a new Remeika phase compound with a complex array of structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Our single crystal x-ray diffraction measurements show that Ce$_3$Ir$_4$Ge$_{13}$ forms in the tetragonally distorted $I4_1/amd$ space group. The electrical resistivity is almost temperature independent over three decades in temperature, from 0.4 K to 400 K, while the Hall coefficient measurements are consistent with a low-carrier semimetal. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal an effective moment of $μ^{\text{exp}}_{\text{eff}} = 1.87 μ…
We report on the magnetic, resistive, and structural studies of perovskite La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$CoO$_{3-δ}$. By using the relation of synthesis temperature and oxygen partial pressure to oxygen stoichiometry obtained from thermogravimetric analysis, we have synthesized a series of samples with precisely controlled $δ=0.00-0.49$. These samples show three structural phases at $δ=0.00-0.15$, $\approx0.25$, $\approx0.5$, and two-phase behavior for other oxygen contents. The stoichiometric material with $δ=0.00$ is a cubic ferromagnetic metal with the Curie temperature $T_{\rm C}=274$ K. The increas…
