We use point contact spectroscopy (PCS) to probe the superconducting properties of electron doped $\rm{Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2}$ ($\rm{x = 0.05, 0.055, 0.07, 0.08}$) and hole doped $\rm{Ba_{0.8}K_{0.2}Fe_2As_2}$. PCS directly probes the low energy density of states via Andreev reflection, revealing two distinct superconducting gaps in both compound families. Apart from the electron underdoped $\rm{Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_2As_2}$, the excess current due to Andreev reflection for the compounds follows the typical BCS temperature dependence. For underdoped $\rm{Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_2As_2}$, the temperature dependence of the excess current deviates from that of BCS, developing a tail at higher temperatures and surviving above bulk $T_c$. Possible explanations for this anomalous behavior are explored.
We study tunneling spectroscopy between a normal metal and underdoped cuprate superconductor modeled by a phenomenological theory in which the pseudogap is a precursor to the undoped Mott insulator. In the transparent tunneling limit, the spectra show a small energy gap associated with Andreev reflection. In the Giaever limit, the spectra show a large energy gap associated with single particle tunneling. Our theory semi-quantitatively describes the two gap behavior observed in tunneling experiments.
A new method is presented for measuring terms in the elastoresistivity tensor $m_{ij}$ of single crystal samples with tetragonal symmetry. The technique is applied to a representative underdoped Fe-arsenide, Ba(Fe$_{0.975}$Co$_{0.025}$)$_2$As$_2$, revealing an anomalously large and anisotropic elastoresistance in comparison to simple metals. The $m_{66}$ coefficient follows a Curie-Weiss temperature dependence, providing direct evidence that the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition that occurs at $T_s$ = 97.5 K in this material is not the result of a true-proper ferro-elastic…
The parent phases of the Fe-arsenide superconductors harbor an antiferromagnetic ground state. Significantly, the Néel transition is either preceded or accompanied by a structural transition that breaks the four fold symmetry of the high-temperature lattice. Borrowing language from the field of soft condensed matter physics, this broken discrete rotational symmetry is widely referred to as an Ising nematic phase transition. Understanding the origin of this effect is a key component of a complete theoretical description of the occurrence of superconductivity in this family of compounds, motivat…
Using two experimental techniques, we studied single crystals of the 122-FeAs family with almost the same critical temperature, Tc. We investigated the temperature dependence of the lower critical field of a single crystal under static magnetic fields parallel to the axis. The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth can be described equally well either by a single anisotropic -wave-like gap or by a two-gap model, while a d-wave approach cannot be used to fit the London penetration depth data. Intrinsic multiple Andreev reflection effect spectroscopy was used to detect bulk gap v…
Andreev-reflection and tunneling studies have been carried out on a single crystal of underdoped Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4-d (NCCO) by using Ag, Pt-Ir and Nb tips to clarify the symmetry of its order parameter. Surprisingly, we observed in the NCCO, on the one hand, the Josephson current (with Nb tip) which indicates the presence of s-wave order parameter, on the other hand, a zero-bias conductance peak (with Ag tip) which is a manifestation of d-wave order parameter. In addition, we find the presence of two distinct energy scales in the underdoped NCCO: the smallest energy scale is associated with the…
The thermal conductivity kappa of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba1-xKxFe2As2 was measured for heat currents parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c axis at temperatures down to 50 mK and in magnetic fields up to 15 T. Measurements were performed on samples with compositions ranging from optimal doping (x = 0.34; Tc = 39 K) down to dopings deep into the region where antiferromagnetic order coexists with superconductivity (x = 0.16; Tc = 7 K). In zero field, there is no residual linear term in kappa(T) as T goes to 0 at any doping, whether for in-plane or inter-plane transport. This s…
Electrical resistivity measurements of detwinned single crystals of the representative iron arsenide Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ reveal a dramatic in-plane anisotropy associated with the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition that precedes the onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order. These results indicate that the structural transition in this family of compounds is fundamentally electronic in origin.
Underdoped PrFeAs(O,F), one of the less known members of the 1111 family of iron-based superconductors, was investigated in detail by means of transport, SQUID magnetometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements and point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy (PCARS). PCARS measurements on single crystals evidence the multigap nature of PrFeAs(O,F) superconductivity, shown to host at least two isotropic gaps, clearly discernible in the spectra, irrespective of the direction of current injection (i.e., along the ab planes or along the c axis). Additional features at higher energy can …
We present extensive 75As NMR and NQR data on the superconducting arsenides PrFeAs0.89F0.11 (Tc=45 K), LaFeAsO0.92F0.08 (Tc=27 K), LiFeAs (Tc = 17 K) and Ba0.72K0.28Fe2As2 (Tc = 31.5 K) single crystal, and compare with the nickel analog LaNiAsO0.9F0.1 (Tc=4.0 K) . In contrast to LaNiAsO0.9F0.1 where the superconducting gap is shown to be isotropic, the spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in the Fe-arsenides decreases below Tc with no coherence peak and shows a step-wise variation at low temperatures. The Knight shift decreases below Tc and shows a step-wise T variation as well. These results ind…
We report a systematic investigation on c-axis point-contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ superconducting single crystals from underdoped to overdoped regions (0.075 $\leq x\leq 0.15$). At optimal doping ($x=0.1$) the PCAR spectrum feature the structures of two superconducting gap and electron-boson coupling mode. In the $s\pm$ scenario, quantitative analysis using a generalized Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formalism with two gaps: one isotropic and another angle dependent, suggest a nodeless state in strong-coupling limit with gap minima on the Fermi surfaces. Upon …
We use neutron scattering to study magnetic order and spin excitations in BaFe$_{1.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$As$_{2}$. On cooling, the system first changes the lattice symmetry from tetragonal to orthoromhbic near $\sim$97 K, and then orders antiferromagnetically at $T_N=91$ K before developing weak superconductivity below $\sim$15 K. Although superconductivity appears to co-exist with static antiferromagnetic order from transport and neutron diffraction measurement, inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal that magnetic excitations do not respond to superconductivity. Instead, the effect of elect…
In addition to unconventional high-Tc superconductivity, the iron arsenides exhibit strong magnetoelastic coupling and a notable electronic anisotropy within the a-b plane. We relate these properties by studying underdoped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 by x-ray diffraction in pulsed magnetic fields up to 27.5 Tesla. We exploit magnetic detwinning effects to demonstrate anisotropy in the in-plane susceptibility, which develops at the structural phase transition despite the absence of magnetic order. The degree of detwinning increases smoothly with decreasing temperature, and a single- domain condition i…
We present point contact spectroscopy (PCS) data for junctions between a normal metal and the electron doped cuprate superconductor Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (PCCO). For the underdoped compositions of this cuprate ($x \sim 0.13$) we observe a peak in the conductance-voltage characteristics of the point contact junctions. The shape and magnitude of this peak suggests the presence of Andreev bound states at the surface of underdoped PCCO which is evidence for a d-wave pairing symmetry. For overdoped PCCO ($x \sim 0.17$) the PCS data does not show any evidence of Andreev bound states at the surface…
Layered oxypnictide Sm$_{1-x}$Th$_x$OFeAs (Sm-1111) is an ideal candidate to be probed by intrinsic multiple Andreev reflections effect (IMARE) spectroscopy. Using the classical "break-junction" technique, we formed ballistic Andreev arrays of identical S--n--S-contacts, where $S$ is superconductor, and $n$ is a layer of normal metal. For $T < T_C$, the I(V) curve shows an excess-current and a subharmonic gap structure (SGS): a set of sharp dI(V)/dV-dips at positions which depend on the superconducting gap value, the number of junctions in the array, and the natural subharmonic order, thus man…
The electrical resistivity rho of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba1-xKxFe2As2 was measured in applied pressures up to 2.6 GPa for four underdoped samples, with x = 0.16, 0.18, 0.19 and 0.21. The antiferromagnetic ordering temperature T_N, detected as a sharp anomaly in rho(T), decreases linearly with pressure. At pressures above around 1.0 GPa, a second sharp anomaly is detected at a lower temperature T_0, which rises with pressure. We attribute this second anomaly to the onset of a phase that causes a reconstruction of the Fermi surface. This new phase expands with increasing x and it comp…
Temperature-dependent in-plane, $ρ_a(T)$, and inter-plane, $ρ_c(T)$, resistivities were measured for the iron-arsenide superconductor (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe $_2$As$_2$ over a broad doping range from parent compound to optimal doping $T_c\approx 38 K$, $0\leq x \leq 0.35$. The coupled magnetic/structural transition at $T_{SM}$ is clearly observed for samples with $T_c <$26 K ($x <0.25$), however its effect on resistivity is much weaker than in the electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)Fe $_2$As$_2$, and the transition leads only to a decrease of resistivity. In addition to the feature at $T_{SM}$, th…
We observed an enhancement of the $c$-axis differential conductance around the zero-bias in Au$/$Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ (Bi2212) junctions near the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. We attribute the conductance enhancement to the Andreev reflection between the surface Cu-O bilayer with suppressed superconductivity and the neighboring superconducting inner bilayer. The continuous evolution from depression to an enhancement of the zero-bias differential conductance, as the temperature approaches $T_c$ from below, points to weakening of the barrier strength of the non-supercond…
The proximity of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the phase diagram of iron arsenides, the apparently weak electron-phonon coupling and the "resonance peak" in the superconducting spin excitation spectrum have fostered the hypothesis of magnetically mediated Cooper pairing. However, since most theories of superconductivity are based on a pairing boson of sufficient spectral weight in the normal state, detailed knowledge of the spin excitation spectrum above the superconducting transition temperature Tc is required to assess the viability of this hypothesis. Using inelastic neutron s…
The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the in-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ was measured down to $T \simeq 50$ mK and up to $H = 15$ T as a function of Co concentration $x$ in the range 0.048 $ \leq x \leq $ 0.114. In zero magnetic field, a negligible residual linear term in $κ/T$ as $T \to 0$ at all $x$ shows that there are no zero-energy quasiparticles and hence the superconducting gap has no nodes in the $ab$-plane anywhere in the phase diagram. However, the field dependence of $κ$ reveals a systematic evolution o…
The projected SO(5) (pSO(5)) Hamiltonian incorporates the quantum spin and superconducting fluctuations of underdoped cuprates in terms of four bosons moving on a coarse grained lattice. A simple mean field approximation can explain some key feautures of the experimental phase diagram: (i) The Mott transition between antiferromagnet and superconductor, (ii) The increase of T_c and superfluid stiffness with hole concentration x and (iii) The increase of antiferromagnetic resonance energy as sqrt{x-x_c} in the superconducting phase. We apply this theory to explain the ``two gaps'' problem found …
Indium Arsenide (InAs) near surface quantum wells (QWs) are promising for the fabrication of semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures given that they allow for a strong hybridization between the two-dimensional states in the quantum well and the ones in the superconductor. In this work we present results for InAs QWs in the quantum Hall regime placed in proximity of superconducting NbTiN. We observe a negative downstream resistance with a corresponding reduction of Hall (upstream) resistance, consistent with a very high Andreev conversion. We analyze the experimental data using the Landau…
Electrical transport through a normal metal / superconductor contact at biases smaller than the energy gap can occur via the reflection of an electron as a hole of opposite wave vector. The same mechanism of electron-hole reflection gives rise to low energy states at the surface of unconventional superconductors having nodes in their order parameter. The occurrence of electron-hole reflections at normal metal / superconductor interfaces was predicted independently by Saint James and de Gennes and by Andreev, and their spectroscopic features discussed in detail by Saint James in the early sixti…
The thermal conductivity k of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 was measured down to 50 mK for a heat current parallel (k_c) and perpendicular (k_a) to the tetragonal c axis, for seven Co concentrations from underdoped to overdoped regions of the phase diagram (0.038 < x < 0.127). A residual linear term k_c0/T is observed in the T = 0 limit when the current is along the c axis, revealing the presence of nodes in the gap. Because the nodes appear as x moves away from the concentration of maximal T_c, they must be accidental, not imposed by symmetry, and are therefore compa…
Temperature-dependent inter-plane resistivity, $ρ_c(T)$, was measured in hole-doped iron-arsenide superconductor (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ over a doping range from parent compound to optimal doping $T_c\approx 38~K$, $0\leq x \leq 0.34$. Measurements were undertaken on high-quality single crystals grown from FeAs flux. The coupled magnetic/structural transition at $T_{SM}$ leads to clear accelerated decrease of $ρ_c(T)$ on cooling in samples with $T_c <$26~K ($x <0.25$). This decrease in hole-doped material is in notable contrast to an increase in $ρ_c(T)$ in the electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x…
We use point contact spectroscopy to probe the superconducting and normal state properties of the iron-based superconductor $\rm{NaFe_{1-\textit{x}}Co_{\textit{x}}As}$ with $\rm{\textit{x} = 0, 0.02, 0.06}$. Andreev spectra corresponding to multiple superconducting gaps are detected in the superconducting phase. For $\rm{\textit{x} = 0.02}$, a broad conductance enhancement around zero bias voltage is detected in both the normal and the superconducting phase. Such a feature is not present in the $\rm{\textit{x} = 0.06}$ samples. We suspect that this enhancement is caused by orbital fluctuations…
Single crystals of mixed alkaline earth metal iron arsenide materials of Ba1-xSrxFe2As2 and Ba0.5Sr0.5(Fe1-yCoy)2As2 are synthesized via the self-flux method. Ba1-xSrxFe2As2 display spin-density wave features (TN) at temperatures intermediate to the parent materials, x = 0 and 1, with TN(x) following an approximately linear trend. Cobalt doping of the 1 to 1 Ba:Sr mixture, Ba0.5Sr0.5(Fe1-yCoy)2As2, results in a superconducting dome with maximum transition temperature of TC = 19 K at y = 0.092, close to the maximum transition temperatures observed in unmixed A(Fe1-yCoy)2As2; however, an anneale…
Early work on the iron-arsenide compounds supported the view, that a reduced dimensionality might be a necessary prerequisite for high-Tc superconductivity. Later, however, it was found that the zero-temperature upper critical magnetic field, Hc2(0), for the 122 iron pnictides is in fact rather isotropic. Here, we report measurements of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, Γ(T), in Ba0.5K0.5Fe2As2 and Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2 single crystals in zero magnetic field and for Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2 as well in static and pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. We find that the resistivity of bo…
In iron selenide superconductors only electron-like Fermi pockets survive, challenging the $S^{\pm}$ pairing based on the quasi-nesting between the electron and hole Fermi pockets (as in iron arsenides). By functional renormalization group study we show that an in-phase $S$-wave pairing on the electron pockets ($S^{++}_{ee}$) is realized. The pairing mechanism involves two competing driving forces: The strong C-type spin fluctuations cause attractive pair scattering between and within electron pockets via Cooperon excitations on the virtual hole pockets, while the G-type spin fluctuations caus…
Nematicity, defined as broken rotational symmetry, has recently been observed in competing phases proximate to the superconducting phase in the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Similarly, the new iron-based high temperature superconductors exhibit a tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition (i.e. a broken C4 symmetry) that either precedes or is coincident with a collinear spin density wave (SDW) transition in undoped parent compounds, and superconductivity arises when both transitions are suppressed via doping. Evidence for strong in-plane anisotropy in the SDW state in this fa…
We show that the competition between magnetism and superconductivity can be used to determine the pairing state in the iron arsenides. To this end we demonstrate that the itinerant antiferromagnetic phase (AFM) and the unconventional $s^{+-}$ sign-changing superconducting state (SC) are near the borderline of microscopic coexistence and macroscopic phase separation, explaining the experimentally observed competition of both ordered states. In contrast, conventional $s^{++}$ pairing is not able to coexist with magnetism. Expanding the microscopic free energy of the system with competing orders …
It has recently been demonstrated that dynamical magnetic correlations measured by neutron scattering in iron chalcogenides can be described with models of short-range correlations characterized by particular {choices of four-spin plaquettes, where the appropriate choice changes as the} parent material is doped towards superconductivity. Here we apply such models to describe measured maps of magnetic scattering as a function of two-dimensional wave vectors obtained for optimally superconducting crystals of FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$. We show that the characteristic antiferromagnetic wave vector evolve…
