We have studied the field-induced magnetic structures of Tb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore by single-crystal neutron diffraction under a field applied along the [111] local anisotropy axis, up to H=12T and down to T=40mK. We collected a hundred magnetic Bragg peaks for each field and temperature value and refined the magnetic structures with k=0 propagation vector by performing a symmetry analysis in the space group R-3m, reducing the number of free parameters to three only. We observe a gradual reorientation of the Tb magnetic moments towards the field direction, close to a "3-in, 1-out / 1-in, 3-out" spin structure in the whole field range 0.05-12T. We perform a quantitative comparison with mean-field calculations and we propose the presence of a low-temperature dynamic symmetry breaking of the local trigonal symmetry, akin to a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, i.e. preserving the overall cubic symmetry. We discuss the possible origin of this off-diagonal mixing term in the crystal field hamiltonian in terms of quadrupole-quadrupole interaction or magneto-elastic effects.
We present a quantu spin liquid state in a spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice with randomness in the exchange interaction. That is, we successfully introduce randomness into the organic radial-based complex and realize a random-singlet (RS) state. All magnetic and thermodynamic experimental results indicate the liquid-like behaviors, which are consistent with those expected in the RS state. These results demonstrate that the randomness or inhomogeneity in the actual systems stabilize the RS state and yield liquid-like behavior.
We show that a strongly correlated Fermi system with the fermion condensate, which exhibits strong deviations from Landau Fermi liquid behavior, is driven into the Landau Fermi liquid by applying a small magnetic field $B$ at temperature T=0. This field-induced Landau Fermi liquid behavior provides the constancy of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio. A reentrance into the strongly correlated regime is observed if the magnetic field $B$ decreases to zero, then the effective mass $M^*$ diverges as $M^*\propto 1/\sqrt{B}$. At finite temperatures, the strongly correlated regime is restored at some temperatu…
Detailed anisotropic resistivity and heat capacity measurements down to ~0.4 K and up to 140 kOe are reported for a single crystalline YbAgGe. Based on these data YbAgGe, a member of the hexagonal RAgGe series, can be classified as new, stoichiometric heavy fermion compound with two magnetic ordering temperatures below 1 K and field-induced non-Fermi-liquid behavior above 45-70 kOe and 80-110 kOe for $H || (ab) and H || c respectively.
Recently considerable excitement has arisen due to the experimental observation of a field-induced spin liquid phase in the compound $α$-RuCl$_3$. However, the nature of this putative spin liquid phase and the relevant microscopic model Hamiltonian remain still unclear. In this work, we address these questions by performing large-scale numerical simulations of a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model proposed to describe the physics of $α$-RuCl$_3$. While there is no evidence for an intermediate phase for in-plane magnetic fields, our results strongly suggest that a stable intermediate spin liqui…
We study the effects of bond randomness in the spin-$1/2$ $J_1-J_2$ triangular Heisenberg model using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group. With increasing bond randomness, we identify a randomness induced spin-liquid-like phase without any magnetic order, dimer order, spin glass order, or valence-bond glass order. The finite-size scaling of gaps suggests the gapless nature of both spin triplet and singlet excitations, which is further supported by the broad continuum of dynamical spin structure factor. By studying the bipartite entanglement spectrum of the system on …
We study magnetic field-induced three-dimensional ordering transitions in low-dimensional quantum spin liquids, such as weakly coupled, antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg dimers and ladders. Using stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo simulations, thermodynamic response functions are obtained down to ultra-low temperatures. We extract the critical scaling exponents which dictate the power-law dependence of the transition temperature on the applied magnetic field. These are compared with recent experiments on candidate materials and with predictions for the Bose-Einstein condensati…
It is shown theoretically that the Luttinger liquid phase in quasi-one-dimensional conductors can exist in the presence of impurities in a form of a collection of bounded Luttinger liquids. The conclusion is based upon the observation by Kane and Fisher that a local impurity potential in Luttinger liquid acts, at low energies, as an infinite barrier. This leads to a discrete spectrum of collective charge and spin density fluctuations, so that interchain hopping can be considered as a small parameter at temperatures below the minimum excitation energy of the collective modes. The results are co…
The quantum spin liquid compound (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$ (PHCC) is studied by $μ$SR under hydrostatic pressures up to 23.6 kbar. At low temperatures, pressure-induced incommensurate magnetic order is detected beyond a quantum critical point at $P_c\sim4.3$ kbar. An additional phase transition to a different ordered phase is observed at $P_1\sim 13.4$ kbar. The data indicate that the high-pressure phase may be a commensurate one. The established $(P-T)$ phase diagram reveals the corresponding pressure-induced multicritical point at $P_1$, $T_1=2.0$ K.
We investigate the zero- and finite-temperature properties of the bond-random $s=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice by the exact diagonalization and the Hams--de Raedt methods. We find that the randomness induces the gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL) state, the random-singlet state. Implications to recent experiments on the mixed-anion pyrochlore-lattice antiferromagnet Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_5$N$_2$ exhibiting gapless QSL behaviors are discussed.
Dielectric spectroscopy is used to check for the onset of polar order in the quasi one-dimensional quantum spin system Sul-Cu2Cl4 when passing from the spin-liquid state into the ordered spiral phase in an external magnetic field. We find clear evidence for multiferroicity in this material and treat in detail its H-T phase diagram close to the quantum-critical regime.
In the study of non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) phenomena in correlated metals, U2Pt2In is of special interest as it is one of the rare stoichiometric (undoped) materials that show NFL behaviour at ambient pressure. Here we report on the stability of the NFL phase with respect to hydrostatic pressure (p< 1.8 GPa). Electrical resistivity data under pressure, taken on a single-crystalline sample for a current in the tetragonal plane, show that T_FL, i.e. the temperature below which the Fermi-liquid T^2-term is observed, increases with pressure as T_FL ~ (p-p_c), where p_c~0 is a critical pressure. This p…
Field-induced commensurate transverse magnetic ordering is observed in the Haldane-gap compound \nd by means of neutron diffraction. Depending on the direction of applied field, the high-field phase is shown to be either a 3-dimensional ordered Néel state or a short-range ordered state with dominant 2-dimensional spin correlations. The structure of the high-field phase is determined, and properties of the observed quantum phase transition are discussed.
We study spin-fluctuation mediated divergent superconducting fluctuations in a Luttinger liquid proximity-coupled to a spin chain. Our study provides insight into how spin fluctuations can induce superconductivity in a strongly correlated non-Fermi liquid with repulsive electronic interactions only. The electrons in the system are governed by the Extended Hubbard Hamiltonian and are coupled to a chain of localized spins modeled by the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $XX$ Hamiltonian. Using a multichannel Luttinger liquid approach, we determine the phase diagram of the metal chain. We find that spin-polariz…
We show using quantum free energy calculation that the quantum phase transition between U(1) quantum spin liquid (QSL) and antiferromagnet (AFM) phases in pyrochlore quantum antiferromagnet (QAFM) is a first order rather than second order. This change in order from second to first order is induced by gauge fluctuations, which are explicitly taken into account at gauge theory level in our effective low energy theory. We therefore have discovered a fluctuation-induced first order quantum phase transition in pyrochlore QAFM. We explicitly derive the quantum free energy description of this QSL to …
The search for quantum spin liquids in frustrated quantum magnets recently has enjoyed a surge of interest, with various candidate materials under intense scrutiny. However, an experimental confirmation of a gapped topological spin liquid remains an open question. Here, we show that circularly-polarized light can provide a novel knob to drive frustrated Mott insulators into a chiral spin liquid (CSL), realizing an elusive quantum spin liquid with topological order. We find that the dynamics of a driven Kagome Mott insulator is well-captured by an effective Floquet spin model, with heating stro…
The magnetization process of the $S=1$ antiferromagnetic chain with the single-ion anisotropy $D$ and the biquadratic interaction is investigated using the numerical diagonalization. Both interactions stabilize the 2-magnon Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase in the magnetization process. Based on several excitation gaps calculated by the numerical diagonalization, some phase diagrams of the magnetization process are presented. These phase diagrams reveal that the spin nematic dominant TLL phase appears at higher magnetizations for sufficiently large negative $D$.
We show that in the Anderson model for a two-dimensional non-Fermi liquid a magnetic instability can lead to the itinerant electron ferromagnetism. The critical temperature and the susceptibility of the paramagnetic phase have been analytically calculated. The usual Fermi behaviour is re-obtained taking the anomalous exponent to be zero.
Photo-induced metallic states in a Mott insulator are studied for the half-filled, one-dimensional Hubbard model with the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. An irradiation of strong AC field is found to create a linear dispersion in the optical spectrum (current-current correlation) in the nonequilibrium steady state reminiscent of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid for the doped Mott insulator in equilibrium. The spin spectrum in nonequilibrium retains the des Cloizeaux-Pearson mode with the spin velocity differing from the charge velocity. The mechanism of the photocarrier-dopin…
We address the problem of a magnetic impurity in a two dimensional $U(1)$ spin liquid where the spinons have gap-less excitations near the Fermi-surface and are coupled to an emergent gap-less gauge field. Using a large N expansion we analyze the strong coupling behavior and obtain the Kondo temperature which was found to be the same as for a Fermi-liquid. In this approximation we also study the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility of the impurity. These quantities present no deviations from the Fermi-liquid ones, consistent with the notion that the magnetic impurity is only sensitive…
We study the competition between the Kondo effect and frustrating exchange interactions in a Kondo-lattice model within a large-${\cal N}$ dynamical mean-field theory. We find a T=0 phase transition between a heavy Fermi-liquid and a spin-liquid for a critical value of the exchange $J_c = T_{K}^0$, the single-impurity Kondo temperature. Close to the critical point, the Fermi liquid coherence scale $T^\star$ is strongly reduced and the effective mass strongly enhanced. The regime $T>T^\star$ is characterized by spin-liquid magnetic correlations and non-Fermi-liquid properties. It is suggested t…
Recently we investigated a role of non-magnetic disorder on the stability of a U(1) spin liquid ($U1SL$) [cond-mat/0407151; Phys. Rev. B (R) accepted]. In the present paper we examine an effect of the non-magnetic disorder on a doped $U1SL$. In a recent study [cond-mat/0408236] we have shown that the doped $U1SL$ shows deconfined massive spinon excitations in the superconducting phase as a result of holon condensation. We find that the massive spinon is trapped by the non-magnetic disorder. Owing to the localized spin the non-magnetic disorder acts as magnetic one.
The temperature (T) dependence of the muon and $^{63}$Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates $1/T_1$ in YbCu4.4Au0.6 is reported over nearly four decades. It is shown that for $T\to 0$ $1/T_1$ diverges following the behaviour predicted by the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory developed by Moriya for a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. On the other hand, the static uniform susceptibility $χ_s$ is observed to diverge as $T^{-2/3}$ and $1/T_1T\propto χ_s^2$, a behaviour which is not accounted for by SCR theory. The application of a magnetic field $H$ is observed to induce a cross…
The magnetization process of the $S=1$ spin ladder system is investigated using the numerical exact diagonalization of finite-size clusters. The field-induced spin nematic liquid phase was predicted to appear by our previous work. Several ground-state phase diagrams in the plane of the single-ion anisotropy and the external magnetic field are obtained in the present study.
The Kitaev model, characterized by bond-dependent Ising spin interactions among spin-orbit entangled dipole moments in Mott insulators, offered a new approach to quantum spin liquids. Motivated by another type of bond-dependent interaction among quadrupole moments in $5d^2$ Mott insulators, we provide a microscopic route to uncover the Kitaev multipolar liquid, featuring fractionalized excitations out of non-Kramers doublets carrying multipole moments. The key ingredient is the magnetic field that allows for bond-anisotropic quadrupole-octupole interactions via mixing with the excited triplet …
Recent experimental evidence for a field-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL) in $α$-RuCl$_3$ calls for an understanding for the ground state of honeycomb Kitaev model under a magnetic field. In this work we address the nature of an enigmatic gapless paramagnetic phase in the antiferromagnetic Kitave model, under an intermediate magnetic field perpendicular to the plane. Combining theoretical and numerical efforts, we identify this gapless phase as a $U(1)$ QSL with spinon Fermi surfaces. We also reveal the nature of continuous quantum phase transitions involving this $U(1)$ QSL, and obtain a pha…
The ground state of the two-leg Heisenberg ladder is identified as an RVB type spin liquid, which is generated by Gutzwiller projection of tight-binding bands with flux pi per plaquet. Explicit trial wave functions for the magnon and hole excitations are formulated in terms of spinons and holons.
We show that the S=1/2 pyrochlore lattice with both Heisenberg and antisymmetric, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions, can order antiferromagnetically into a state with chiral symmetry, dictated by the distribution of the DM interactions. The chiral antiferromagnetic state is characterized by a small staggered magnetic moment induced by the DM interaction. An external magnetic field can also lead to characteristic field-induced ordering patterns, strongly dependent on the field direction, and generally separated by a quantum phase transition from the chiral ordered phase. The phase diagram …
We consider a theoretical problem of electron-electron scattering time in a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) conductor in a magnetic field, perpendicular to its conducting axis. We show that inverse electron-electron scattering time becomes of the order of characteristic electron energy, $1/τ\sim ε\sim T$, in a high magnetic field, directed far from the main crystallographic axes, which indicates breakdown of the Fermi liquid theory. In a magnetic field, directed close to one of the main crystallographic axis, inverse electron-electron scattering time becomes much smaller than characteristic electr…
Cs2CuCl4 is known to possess a quantum spin liquid phase with antiferromagnetic interaction below 2.8 K. We report the observation of a new metastable magnetic phase of the triangular frustrated quantum spin system Cs2CuCl4 induced by the application of hydrostatic pressure. We measured the magnetic properties of Cs2CuCl4 following the application and release of pressure after 3 days. We observed a previously unknown ordered magnetic phase with a transition temperature of 9 K. Furthermore, the recovered sample with new magnetic ground state possesses an equivalent crystal structure to the unco…
We have studied the field induced magnetic structures in the spin liquid Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, in a wide temperature (0.3$<$$T$$<$270 K) and field (0$<$$H$$<$7 T) range, by single crystal neutron diffraction with $\bf{H}$ // [110] axis. We combined unpolarized neutron data with polarized ones, analyzed within the local susceptibility model. A ferromagnetic-like structure with $\bf{k}$ = 0 propagation vector is induced, whose local order at low field and low temperature is akin to spin ice. The four Tb ions separate in $α$ and $β$ chains having different values of the magnetic moments, which is qu…
We suggest that a randomization of the pseudo-dipolar interaction in the spin-orbit-generated low-energy Hamiltonian of YbMgGaO$_4$ due to an inhomogeneous charge environment from a natural mixing of Mg$^{2+}$ and Ga$^{3+}$ can give rise to orientational spin disorder and mimic a spin-liquid-like state. In the absence of such quenched disorder, $1/S$ and density matrix renormalization group calculations both show robust ordered states for the physically relevant phases of the model. Our scenario is consistent with the available experimental data and further experiments are proposed to support …
Quantum spin-liquids are strongly correlated phases of matter displaying a highly entangled ground state. Due to their unconventional nature, finding experimental signatures of these states has proven to be a remarkable challenge. Here we show that the effects of local impurities can provide strong signatures of a Dirac quantum spin-liquid state. Focusing on a gapless Dirac quantum spin-liquid state as realized in NaYbO$_2$, we show that single magnetic impurity coupled to the quantum spin-liquid state creates a resonant spinon peak at zero frequency, coexisting the original Dirac spinons. We …
We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_χ$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further …
We study an exactly solvable model describing a stripe consisting of a Toda array of $N$ anharmonic elastic chains sandwiched between two conducting chains. It is shown that the presence of a charge on one chain generates a gapless excitation branch (Luttinger liquid) on the other and leads to increase in the phonon frequencies.
We report the observation of novel magnetoresistance oscillations induced by the resonant inter-subband absorption in nondegenerate 2D electrons bound to the surface of liquid helium. The oscillations are periodic in 1/B and originate from the scattering-mediated transitions of the excited electrons into the Landau states of the first subband. The structure of the oscillations is affected by the collision broadening of the Landau levels and by many-electron effects.
We show that electrons on liquid helium display intrinsic bistability of resonant inter-subband absorption. The bistability occurs for comparatively weak microwave power. The underlying giant nonlinearity of the many-electron response results from the interplay of the strong short-range electron correlations, the long relaxation time, and the multi-subband character of the electron energy spectrum.
Quantum spin liquids provide paradigmatic examples of highly entangled quantum states of matter. Frustration is the key mechanism to favor spin liquids over more conventional magnetically ordered states. Here we propose to engineer frustration by exploiting the coupling of quantum magnets to the quantized light of an optical cavity. The interplay between the quantum fluctuations of the electro-magnetic field and the strongly correlated electrons results in a tunable long-range interaction between localized spins. This cavity-induced frustration robustly stabilizes spin liquid states, which occ…
The interplay of interactions and disorder in two-dimensional (2D) electron systems has actively been studied for decades. The paradigmatic approach involves starting with a clean Fermi liquid and perturbing the system with both disorder and interactions. We instead start with a clean non-Fermi liquid near a 2D ferromagnetic quantum critical point and consider the effects of disorder. In contrast with the disordered Fermi liquid, we find that our model does not suffer from runaway flows to strong coupling and the system has a marginally stable fixed point with perfect conduction.
It is shown that a strong magnetic field applied to a bulk metal induces a Luttinger-liquid phase. This phase is characterized by the zero-bias anomaly in tunneling: the tunneling conductance scales as a power-law of voltage or temperature. The tunneling exponent increases with the magnetic field as BlnB. The zero-bias anomaly is most pronounced for tunneling with the field applied perpendicular to the plane of the tunneling junction.
We have carried out theoretical studies of the phonons and spinons excitation spectra of $Sr_2CuO_3 $ in term of a one-dimensional model with non-adiabatic interaction magnetic and elastic subsystems using continuous time Monte Carlo method. Two gaps in triplet excitation spectrum are found. The bond defects concentration estimated is well agreement with the experimental data. The formation of magnetic moment on site at low temperature $T_N \sim 5 K$ is caused by freezing quantum spin liquid with correlation radius of antiferromagnetic ordering $ξ/a \sim 300 - 500$
We investigate transport through a tunnelling junction between an uncorrelated metallic lead and a Luttinger liquid when the latter is subjected to a time dependent perturbation. The tunnelling current as well as the electron energy distribution function are found to be strongly affected by the perturbation due to generation of harmonics in the density oscillations. Using a semiconducting lead instead of a metallic one results in electrons being injected into the lead even without applied voltage. Some applications to carbon nanotubes are discussed.
We investigate the magnetic interactions in Sr3NiPtO6, characterized to be a spin liquid using ab initio calculations. The results reveal a novel metal to insulator transition due to finite exchange interaction strength; the magnetic solutions (independent of magnetic ordering) are large band gap insulators, while the non-magnetic solution is metallic. The Ni moment is found to be large and the coupling among intra-chain Ni moments is antiferromagnetic unlike other compounds in this family. These results, thus, reveal the importance of intra-chain antiferromagnetic interaction in addition to g…
Hund's coupling is shown to generally favor, in a doped half-filled Mott insulator, an increase in the compressibility culminating in a Fermi-liquid instability towards phase separation. The largest effect is found about the frontier between an ordinary and an orbitally-decoupled ("Hund's") metal. The increased compressibility implies an enhancement of quasiparticle scattering, thus favoring other possible symmetry breakings. This physics is shown to happen in simulations of the 122 Fe-based superconductors, possibly implying the relevance of this mechanism in the enhancement of the the critic…
We consider the behavior of strongly correlated electron liquid in high-temperature superconductors within the framework of the fermion condensation model. We show that at low temperatures the normal state recovered by the application of a magnetic field larger than the critical field can be viewed as the Landau Fermi liquid induced by the magnetic field. In this state, the Wiedemann-Franz law and the Korringa law are held and the elementary excitations are the Landau Fermi Liquid quasiparticles. Contrary to what might be expected from the Landau theory, the effective mass of quasiparticles de…
We explore the magnetic properties of the Fermi-like liquid represented by the D3-D7' system. The system exhibits interesting magnetic properties such as ferromagnetism and an anomalous Hall effect, which are due to the Chern-Simons term in the effective gravitational action. We investigate the spectrum of quasi-normal modes in the presence of a magnetic field and show that the magnetic field mitigates the instability towards a striped phase. In addition, we find a critical magnetic field above which the zero sound mode becomes massive.
Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains in a sufficiently strong magnetic field are Luttinger liquids, whose parameters depend on the actual magnetization of the chain. Here we present precise numerical estimates of the Luttinger liquid dressed charge $Z$, which determines the critical exponents, by calculating the magnetization and quadrupole operator profiles for $S=1/2$ and S=1 chains using the density matrix renormalization group method. Critical amplitudes and the scattering length at the chain ends are also determined. Although both systems are Luttinger liquids the characteristic param…
Electronic waveguides in graphene formed by counterpropagating snake states in suitable inhomogeneous magnetic fields are shown to constitute a realization of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Due to the spatial separation of the right- and left-moving snake states, this non-Fermi liquid state induced by electron-electron interactions is essentially unaffected by disorder. We calculate the interaction parameters accounting for the absence of Galilei invariance in this system, and thereby demonstrate that non-Fermi liquid effects are significant and tunable in realistic geometries.
We present a holographic perspective on magnetic oscillations in strongly correlated electron systems via a fluid of charged spin 1/2 particles outside a black brane in an asymptotically anti-de-Sitter spacetime. The resulting back-reaction on the spacetime geometry and bulk gauge field gives rise to magnetic oscillations in the dual field theory, which can be directly studied without introducing probe fermions, and which differ from those predicted by Fermi liquid theory.
We investigate the Zeeman-field-driven quantum phase transitions between singlet spin liquids and algebraically ordered O(2) nematic spin liquids of spin-one bosons in one-dimensional optical lattices. We find that the critical behavior is characterized by condensation of hardcore bosons instead of ideal magnons in high dimensional lattices. Critical exponents are strongly renormalized by hardcore interactions and critical states are equivalent to the free Fermion model up to the Friedal oscillations. We also find that the algebraically ordered nematic spin liquids close to critical points are…
Exact-diagonalization studies of few-electron quantum dots and disks are performed, with the aim to investigate a Wigner cluster -- Fermi liquid crossover in zero magnetic field at varying strength of Coulomb interaction. A clear indication of a transition of a liquid-solid type in the ground state is found in a more adequate quantum-disk model.
Geometrically frustrated interactions may render classical ground-states macroscopically degenerate. The connection between classical and quantum liquids and how the degeneracy is affected by quantum fluctuations is, however, less well understood. We study a simple model of coupled quantum and classical degrees of freedom, the so-called Falicov-Kimball model, on a triangular lattice and away from half-filling. For weak interactions the phase diagram features a charge disordered state down to zero temperature. We provide compelling evidence that this phase is a liquid and show that it is divide…
Realistic model Hamiltonians for quantum spin liquids frequently exhibit a large separation of energy scales between their elementary excitations. At intermediate, experimentally relevant temperatures, some excitations are sparse and hop coherently, whereas others are thermally incoherent and dense. Here we study the interplay of two such species of quasiparticle, dubbed spinons and visons, which are subject to nontrivial mutual statistics -- one of the hallmarks of quantum spin liquid behaviour. Our results for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquids show an intriguing feedback mechanism, akin to…
We show that the single-particle spectral functions in a magnetic field can be used to probe spin-charge separation of a Luttinger liquid. Away from the Fermi momentum, the magnetic field splits both the spinon peak and holon peak; here the spin-charge separation nature is reflected in the different magnitude of the two splittings. At the Fermi momentum, the magnetic field splits the zero-field peak into {\it four} peaks. The feasibility of experimentally studying this effect is discussed.
We consider the response of the density of a fermion ensemble to an applied weak static magnetic field. It is known that for non-interacting Fermi gas, this response is fully characterized by the Fermi volume and the Berry curvature on the Fermi surface. Here we show the same result holds for interacting fermions, including Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid, to all orders in perturbation theory. Our result relies only on the assumption of a well-defined Fermi surface and the general analytic properties of quantum field theory, and is completely model independent.
