Being considered as a prototype for description of oceanic rogue waves (RWs), the Peregrine breather solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) has been recently observed and intensely investigated experimentally in particular within the context of water waves. Here, we report the experimental results showing the evolution of the Peregrine solution in the presence of wind forcing in the direction of wave propagation. The results show the persistence of the breather evolution dynamics even in the presence of strong wind and chaotic wave field generated by it. Furthermore, we have shown that characteristic spectrum of the Peregrine breather persists even at the highest values of the generated wind velocities thus making it a viable characteristic for prediction of rogue waves.
This article discusses a limiting behavior of breather solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. These breathers belong to the families of solitons on a non-vanishing and constant background, where the continuous-wave envelope serves as a pedestal. The rational Peregrine soliton acts as a limiting behavior of the other two breather solitons, i.e., the Kuznetsov-Ma breather and Akhmediev soliton. Albeit with a phase shift, the latter becomes a nonlinear extension of the homoclinic orbit waveform corresponding to an unstable mode in the modulational instability phenomenon. …
Solitons are coherent structures that describe the nonlinear evolution of wave localizations in hydrodynamics, optics, plasma and Bose-Einstein condensates. While the Peregrine breather is known to amplify a single localized perturbation of a carrier wave of finite amplitude by a factor of three, there is a counterpart solution on zero background known as the degenerate two-soliton which also leads to high amplitude maxima. In this study, we report several observations of such multi-soliton with doubly-localized peaks in a water wave flume. The data collected in this experiment confirm the dis…
In this article, we derive exact analytical expressions for the spatial Fourier spectrum of the soliton family on a constant background. Also known as breathers, these solitons are exact solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and are considered as prototypes for rogue wave models. Depending on the periodicity in the spatial-temporal domain, the characteristics in the wavenumber-temporal domain may feature either a continuous or discrete spectrum.
Experimental results describing random, uni-directional, long crested, water waves over non-uniform bathymetry confirm the formation of stable coherent wave packages traveling with almost uniform group velocity. The waves are generated with JONSWAP spectrum for various steepness, height and constant period. A set of statistical procedures were applied to the experimental data, including the space and time variation of kurtosis, skewness, BFI, Fourier and moving Fourier spectra, and probability distribution of wave heights. Stable wave packages formed out of the random field and traveling over …
Soliton and breather solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) are known to model localized structures in nonlinear dispersive media such as on the water surface. One of the conditions for an accurate propagation of such exact solutions is the proper generation of the exact initial phase-shift profile in the carrier wave, as defined by the NLSE envelope at a specific time or location. Here, we show experimentally the significance of such initial exact phase excitation during the hydrodynamic propagation of localized envelope solitons and breathers, which modulate a plane wave of c…
Rogue waves are abnormally large waves which appear unexpectedly and have attracted considerable attention, particularly in recent years. The one space, one time (1+1) nonlinear Schrödinger equation is often used to model rogue waves; it is an envelope description of plane waves and admits the so-called Pergerine and Kuznetov-Ma soliton solutions. However, in deep water waves and certain electromagnetic systems where there are two significant transverse dimensions, the 2+1 hyperbolic nonlinear Schrodinger equation is the appropriate wave envelope description. Here we show that these rogue wave…
In many physical contexts, notably including deep water waves, modulation instability in one space dimension is often studied using the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The principal solutions of interest are solitons and breathers which are adopted as models of wave packets. The Peregrine breather in particular is often invoked as a model of a rogue wave. In this paper we add a linear growth term to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation to model the amplification of propagating wave groups. This is motivated by an application to wind-generated water waves, but this forced nonlinear Schrödinger eq…
Peregrine soliton (PS) is widely regarded as a prototype nonlinear structure capturing properties of rogue waves that emerge in the nonlinear propagation of unidirectional wave trains. As an exact breather solution of the one-dimensional focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions, the PS can be viewed as a soliton on finite background, i.e. a nonlinear superposition of a soliton and a monochromatic wave. A recent mathematical work showed that both nonzero boundary conditions and solitonic content are not pre-requisites for the PS occurrence. Instead, it has been d…
