We deal with regular Lagrangian constrained systems which are invariant under the action of a symmetry group. Fixing a connection on the higher-order principal bundle where the Lagrangian and the (independent) constraints are defined, the higher-order Lagrange-Poincaré equations of classical mechanical systems with higher-order constraints are obtained from classical Lagrangian reduction. Higher-order Lagrange-Poincaré operator is introduced to characterize higher-order Lagrange-Poincaré equations. Interesting applications are derived as, for instance, the optimal control of an underactuated Elroy's Beanie and a snakeboard seens as an optimization problem with higher-order constraints.
Motivated by the problem of longitudinal data assimilation, e.g., in the registration of a sequence of images, we develop the higher-order framework for Lagrangian and Hamiltonian reduction by symmetry in geometric mechanics. In particular, we obtain the reduced variational principles and the associated Poisson brackets. The special case of higher order Euler-Poincaré and Lie-Poisson reduction is also studied in detail.
This note is a continuation of our earlier articles arXiv:1612.08897 and arXiv:1709.09030, where using the dependent coordinates the local Lagrange-Poincaré equations were obtained for a mechanical system with symmetry describing the motion of two interacting scalar particles on a special Riemannian manifold (the product of the total space of the principal fiber bundle and vector space), on which a free proper and isometric action of a compact semisimple Lie group is given. Assuming the existence of the parametric representations for local sections in the principal bundle, we make the transiti…
A special case of the Lagrange-Poincaré equations for the gauge field interacting with a scalar field is obtained. For description of the dynamics on the configuration space, the adapted coordinates are used. After neglecting the group variables the obtained equations describe the evolution on the gauge orbit space of the principal fiber bundle which is related to the system under the consideration.
The Lagrange--Poincaré equations for a mechanical system which describes the interaction of two scalar particles that move on a special Riemannian manifold, consisting of the product of two manifolds, the total space of a principal fiber bundle and the vector space, are obtained. The derivation of equations is performed by using the variational principle developed by Poincaré for the mechanical systems with a symmetry. The obtained equations are written in terms of the dependent variables which, as in gauge theories, are implicitly determined by means of equations representing the local sectio…
The Lagrange--Poincaré equations for the mechanical system describing the motion of a scalar particle on a Riemannian manifold with a given free and isometric action of a compact Lie group is obtained. In an arising principle fibre bundle, the total space of which serves as a configuration space of the considered mechanical system, the local description of the reduced motion is done in terms of dependent coordinates. In obtaining of the equations we use the variational principle developed by Poincaré for the mechanical systems with a symmetry.
We deal with Lagrangian systems that are invariant under the action of a symmetry group. The mechanical connection is a principal connection that is associated to Lagrangians which have a kinetic energy function that is defined by a Riemannian metric. In this paper we extend this notion to arbitrary Lagrangians. We then derive the reduced Lagrange-Poincare equations in a new fashion and we show how solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations can be reconstructed with the help of the mechanical connection. Illustrative examples confirm the theory.
The Lagrange-Poincare equations of classical mechanics are cast into a field theoretic context together with their associated constrained variational principle. An integrability/reconstruction condition is established that relates solutions of the original problem with those of the reduced problem. The Kelvin-Noether theorem is formulated in this context. Applications to the isoperimetric problem, the Skyrme model for meson interaction, metamorphosis image dynamics, and molecular strands illustrate various aspects of the theory.
Using the dependent coordinates, the local Lagrange-Poincaré equations and equations for the relative equilibria are obtained for a mechanical system with a symmetry describing the motion of two interacting scalar particles on a special Riemannian manifold (the product of the total space of the principal fiber bundle and the vector space) on which a free proper and isometric action of a compact semi-simple Lie group is given. As in gauge theories, dependent coordinates are implicitly determined by means of equations representing the local sections of the principal fiber bundle.
In this paper, we derive the equations of motion for an elastic body interacting with a perfect fluid via the framework of Lagrange-Poincare reduction. We model the combined fluid-structure system as a geodesic curve on the total space of a principal bundle on which a diffeomorphism group acts. After reduction by the diffeomorphism group we obtain the fluid-structure interactions where the fluid evolves by the inviscid fluid equations. Along the way, we describe various geometric structures appearing in fluid-structure interactions: principal connections, Lie groupoids, Lie algebroids, etc. We…
In this paper, we will see that the symplectic creed by Weinstein "everything is a Lagrangian submanifold" also holds for Hamilton-Poincaré and Lagrange-Poincaré reduction. In fact, we show that solutions of the Hamilton-Poincaré equations and of the Lagrange-Poincaré equations are in one-to-one correspondence with distinguished curves in a Lagrangian submanifold of a symplectic manifold. For this purpose, we will combine the concept of a Tulczyjew triple with Marsden-Weinstein symplectic reduction.
In some previous papers, a geometric description of Lagrangian Mechanics on Lie algebroids has been developed. In the present paper, we give a Hamiltonian description of Mechanics on Lie algebroids. In addition, we introduce the notion of a Lagrangian submanifold of a symplectic Lie algebroid and we prove that the Lagrangian (Hamiltonian) dynamics on Lie algebroids may be described in terms of Lagrangian submanifolds of symplectic Lie algebroids. The Lagrangian (Hamiltonian) formalism on Lie algebroids permits to deal with Lagrangian (Hamiltonian) functions not defined necessarily on tangent (…
A discrete version of Lagrangian reduction is developed in the context of discrete time Lagrangian systems on $G\times G$, where $G$ is a Lie group. We consider the case when the Lagrange function is invariant with respect to the action of an isotropy subgroup of a fixed element in the representation space of $G$. In this context the reduction of the discrete Euler-Lagrange equations is shown to lead to the so called discrete Euler-Poincaré equations. A constrained variational principle is derived. The Legendre transformation of the discrete Euler-Poincaré equations leads to discrete Hamiltoni…
A Poincaré covariant Lagrange anchor is found for the non-Lagrangian relativistic wave equations of Bargmann and Wigner describing free massless fields of spin $s>1/2$ in four-dimensional Minkowski space. By making use of this Lagrange anchor, we assign a symmetry to each conservation law and perform the path-integral quantization of the theory.
The purpose of this paper is to describe geometrically discrete Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics on Lie groupoids. From a variational principle we derive the discrete Euler-Lagrange equations and we introduce a symplectic 2-section, which is preserved by the Lagrange evolution operator. In terms of the discrete Legendre transformations we define the Hamiltonian evolution operator which is a symplectic map with respect to the canonical symplectic 2-section on the prolongation of the dual of the Lie algebroid of the given groupoid. The equations we get include as particular cases the classic…
A Poincare invariant Lagrange anchor is found for the non-Lagrangian relativistic wave equations of Bargmann and Wigner describing free massless fields of spin s > 1/2 in four-dimensional Minkowski space. By making use of this Lagrange anchor, we assign a symmetry to each conservation law.
The equations for the critical points of the action functional defined by a Lagrangian depending on higher-order derivatives of admissible curves on a Lie algebroid are found. The relation with Euler-Poincaré and Lagrange Poincaré type equations is studied. Reduction and reconstruction results for such systems are established.
Based on the d'Alembert-Lagrange-Poincaré variational principle, we formulate general equations of motion for mechanical systems subject to nonlinear nonholonomic constraints, that do not involve Lagrangian undetermined multipliers. We write these equations in a canonical form called the Poincaré-Hamilton equations, and study a version of corresponding Poincaré-Cartan integral invariant which are derived by means of a type of asynchronous variation of the Poincaré variables of the problem that involve the variation of the time. As a consequence, it is shown that the invariance of a certain lin…
We use the Frölicher-Nijenhuis formalism to reformulate the inverse problem of the calculus of variations for a system of differential equations of order 2k in terms of a semi-basic 1-form of order k. Within this general context, we use the homogeneity proposed by Crampin and Saunders in [14] to formulate and discuss the projective metrizability problem for higher order differential equation fields. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for higher order projectivpre-e metrizability in terms of homogeneous semi-basic 1-forms. Such a semi-basic 1-form is the Poincaré-Cartan 1-form of a …
The aim of this work is to study, from an intrinsic and geometric point of view, second-order constrained variational problems on Lie algebroids, that is, optimization problems defined by a cost functional which depends on higher-order derivatives of admissible curves on a Lie algebroid. Extending the classical Skinner and Rusk formalism for the mechanics in the context of Lie algebroids, for second-order constrained mechanical systems, we derive the corresponding dynamical equations. We find a symplectic Lie subalgebroid where, under some mild regularity conditions, the second-order constrain…
We formulate Euler-Poincaré and Lagrange-Poincaré equations for systems with broken symmetry. We specialize the general theory to present explicit equations of motion for nematic systems, ranging from single nematic molecules to biaxial liquid crystals. The geometric construction applies to order parameter spaces consisting of either unsigned unit vectors (directors) or symmetric matrices (alignment tensors). On the Hamiltonian side, we provide the corresponding Poisson brackets in both Lie-Poisson and Hamilton-Poincaré formulations. The explicit form of the helicity invariant for uniaxial nem…
We study the Euler-Lagrange equations for a parameter dependent $G$-invariant Lagrangian on a homogeneous $G$-space. We consider the pullback of the parameter dependent Lagrangian to the Lie group $G$, emphasizing the special invariance properties of the associated Euler-Poincaré equations with advected parameters.
This paper develops the theory of discrete Dirac reduction of discrete Lagrange-Dirac systems with an abelian symmetry group acting on the configuration space. We begin with the linear theory and, then, we extend it to the nonlinear setting using retraction compatible charts. We consider the reduction of both the discrete Dirac structure and the discrete Lagrange-Pontryagin principle, and show that they both lead to the same discrete Lagrange-Poincaré-Dirac equations. The coordinatization of the discrete reduced spaces relies on the notion of discrete connections on principal bundles. At last,…
We study the secular evolution of several exoplanetary systems by extending the Laplace-Lagrange theory to order two in the masses. Using an expansion of the Hamiltonian in the Poincaré canonical variables, we determine the fundamental frequencies of the motion and compute analytically the long-term evolution of the keplerian elements. Our study clearly shows that, for systems close to a mean-motion resonance, the second order approximation describes their secular evolution more accurately than the usually adopted first order one. Moreover, this approach takes into account the influence of the…
Given a matched pair of Lie groups, we show that the tangent bundle of the matched pair group is isomorphic to the matched pair of the tangent groups. We thus obtain the Euler-Lagrange equations on the trivialized matched pair of tangent groups, as well as the Euler-Poincaré equations on the matched pair of Lie algebras. We show explicitly how these equations cover those of the semi-direct product theory. In particular, we study the trivialized, and the reduced Lagrangian dynamics on the group $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$.
In the framework of finite order variational sequences a new class of Lagrangians arises, namely, \emph{special} Lagrangians. These Lagrangians are the horizontalization of forms on a jet space of lower order. We describe their properties together with properties of related objects, such as Poincaré--Cartan and Euler--Lagrange forms, momenta and momenta of generating forms, a new geometric object arising in variational sequences. Finally, we provide a simple but important example of special Lagrangian, namely the Hilbert--Einstein Lagrangian.
Hamilton equations based not only upon the Poincare--Cartan equivalent of a first-order Lagrangian, but rather upon its Lepagean equivalent are investigated. Lagrangians which are singular within the Hamilton--De Donder theory, but regularizable in this generalized sense are studied. Legendre transformation for regularizable Lagrangians is proposed, and Hamilton equations, equivalent with the Euler--Lagrange equations, are found. It is shown that all Lagrangians affine or quadratic in the first derivatives of the field variables are regularizable. The Dirac field and the electromagnetic field …
We investigate the reduction process of a k-symplectic field theory whose Lagrangian is invariant under a symmetry group. We give explicit coordinate expressions of the resulting reduced partial differential equations, the so-called Lagrange-Poincare field equations. We discuss two issues about reconstructing a solution from a given solution of the reduced equations. The first one is an interpretation of the integrability conditions, in terms of the curvatures of some connections. The second includes the introduction of the concept of a k-connection to provide a reconstruction method. We show …
This paper develops the theory of Dirac reduction by symmetry for nonholonomic systems on Lie groups with broken symmetry. The reduction is carried out for the Dirac structures, as well as for the associated Lagrange-Dirac and Hamilton-Dirac dynamical systems. This reduction procedure is accompanied by reduction of the associated variational structures on both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian sides. The reduced dynamical systems obtained are called the implicit Euler-Poincaré-Suslov equations with advected parameters and the implicit Lie-Poisson-Suslov equations with advected parameters. The theory …
We proceed from the fact that the classical paths of irreducible massive spinning particle lie on a circular cylinder with the time-like axis in Minkowski space. Assuming that all the classical paths on the cylinder are gauge-equivalent, we derive the equations of motion for the cylindrical curves. These equations are non-Lagrangian, but they admit interpretation in terms of the conditional extremum problem for a certain length functional in the class of paths subjected to the constant separation conditions. The unconditional variational principle is obtained after inclusion of constant separa…
This paper concerns the classical dynamics of three coupled rotors: equal masses moving on a circle subject to attractive cosine inter-particle potentials. It is a simpler variant of the gravitational three-body problem and also arises as the classical limit of a model of coupled Josephson junctions. Unlike in the gravitational problem, there are no singularities (neither collisional nor non-collisional), leading to global existence and uniqueness of solutions. In appropriate units, the non-negative energy $E$ of the relative motion is the only free parameter. We find analogues of the Euler-La…
Lepage equivalents of Lagrangians are a higher order, field-theoretical generalization of the notion of Poincare-Cartan form from mechanics and play a similar role: they give rise to a geometric formulation (and to a geometric understanding) of the calculus of variations. A long-standing open problem is the determination, for field-theoretical Lagrangians of order greater than one, of a Lepage equivalent with the so-called closure property: the Lepage equivalent is a closed differential form if and only if the Lagrangian has vanishing Euler-Lagrange expressions. The present paper proposes a so…
The projectability of Poincaré-Cartan forms in a third-order jet bundle $J^3π$ onto a lower-order jet bundle is a consequence of the degenerate character of the corresponding Lagrangian. This fact is analyzed using the constraint algorithm for the associated Euler-Lagrange equations in $J^3π$. The results are applied to study the Hilbert Lagrangian for the Einstein equations (in vacuum) from a multisymplectic point of view. Thus we show how these equations are a consequence of the application of the constraint algorithm to the geometric field equations, meanwhile the other constraints are rela…
In this paper we use Lagrange-Poincare reduction to understand the coupling between a fluid and a set of Lagrangian particles that are supposed to simulate it. In particular, we reinterpret the work of Cendra et al. by substituting velocity interpolation from particle velocities for their principal connection. The consequence of writing evolution equations in terms of interpolation is two-fold. First, it gives estimates on the error incurred when interpolation is used to derive the evolution of the system. Second, this form of the equations of motion can inspire a family of particle and hybrid…
The Lagrangian, multi-dimensional, ideal, compressible gasdynamic equations are written in a multi-symplectic form, in which the Lagrangian fluid labels, $m^i$ (the Lagrangian mass coordinates) and time $t$ are the independent variables, and in which the Eulerian position of the fluid element ${\bf x}={\bf x}({\bf m},t)$ and the entropy $S=S({\bf m},t)$ are the dependent variables. Constraints in the variational principle are incorporated by means of Lagrange multipliers. The constraints are: the entropy advection equation $S_t=0$, the Lagrangian map equation ${\bf x}_t={\bf u}$ where ${\bf u}…
