We report the electrical top-gating of a 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface, using electron-beam evaporated Au gate electrodes. In these structures, epitaxial LaAlO3 films grown by pulsed laser deposition induce the 2DEGs at the interface to the SrTiO3 substrate and simultaneously act as the gate dielectric. The structured top-gates enable a local tuning and complete on/off switching of the interface (super)-conductivity, while maintaining the usual, intrinsic characteristics for these LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces when no gate voltage is applied.
A Bi2Se3 topological insulator field effect transistor is investigated by using ionic liquid as an electric double layer gating material, leading to a conductance modulation of 365% at room temperature. We discuss the role of charged impurities on the transport properties. The conductance modulation with gate bias is due to a change in the carrier concentration, whereas the temperature dependent conductance change is originated from a change in mobility. Large conductance modulation at room temperature along with the transparent optical properties makes topological insulators as an interesting…
Creating carrier reservoirs in layered compounds can effectively tune the carrier density, which often induces a variety of emergent properties. Based on solid-ion-conductor gating technique, we successfully induce superconductivity of 4.8 K in ultrathin Li-intercalated SnSe2 samples. The Li+ ions are driven in between interspacing of SnSe2 layers and form a single reservoir layer to provide electrons. In addition, a dome-like T c is found through substituting of S for Se, where the optimal T c is 6.2 K for SnSe1.8S0.2. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the intercalated LiSnS…
The electrochemical gating technique is a powerful tool to tune the \textit{surface} electronic conduction properties of various materials by means of pure charge doping, but its efficiency is thought to be hampered in materials with a good electronic screening. We show that, if applied to a metallic superconductor (NbN thin films), this approach allows observing reversible enhancements or suppressions of the \emph{bulk} superconducting transition temperature, which vary with the thickness of the films. These results are interpreted in terms of proximity effect, and indicate that the effective…
Superconductivity (SC) in the Ba-122 family of iron-based compounds can be controlled by aliovalent or isovalent substitutions, applied external pressure, and strain, the combined effects of which are sometimes studied within the same sample. Most often, the result is limited to a shift of the SC dome to different doping values. In a few cases, the maximum SC transition at optimal doping can also be enhanced. In this work, we study the combination of charge doping together with isovalent P substitution and strain by performing ionic gating experiments on BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.8}$P$_{0.2}$)$_2$ ultra…
Electrolyte gating using ionic liquid electrolytes has recently generated considerable interest as a method to achieve large carrier density modulations in a variety of materials. In noble metal thin films, electrolyte gating results in large changes in sheet resistance. The widely accepted mechanism for these changes is the formation of an electric double layer with a charged layer of ions in the liquid and accumulation or depletion of carriers in the thin film. We report here a different mechanism. In particular, we show using x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) that the previously …
Controllable geometric manipulation via micromachining techniques provides a promising tool for enhancing useful topological electrical responses relevant to future applications such as quantum information science. Here we present microdevices fabricated with focused ion beam from indium-doped topological insulator Pb1-xSnxTe. With device thickness on the order of 1 μm and an extremely large bulk resistivity, we achieve an unprecedented enhancement of the surface contribution to about 30% of the total conductance near room temperature. The surface contribution increases as the temperature is r…
Motivated by the existence of superconductivity in pyrite-structure CuS$_2$, we explore the possibility of ionic-liquid-gating-induced superconductivity in the proximal antiferromagnetic Mott insulator NiS$_2$. A clear gating-induced transition from a two-dimensional insulating state to a three-dimensional metallic state is observed at positive gate bias on single crystal surfaces. No evidence for superconductivity is observed down to the lowest measured temperature of 0.45 K, however. Based on transport, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force micr…
Ionic gating is a powerful technique for tuning the physical properties of a material via electric field-induced charge doping, but is prone to introduce extrinsic disorder and undesired electrochemical modifications in the gated material beyond pure electrostatics. Conversely, reversible, volatile and electrostatic modulation is pivotal in the reliable design and operation of novel device concepts enabled by the ultrahigh induced charge densities attainable via ionic gating. Here we demonstrate a simple and effective method to achieve reversible and volatile gating of surface-sensitive ultrat…
We report that the electrical conductance between closely-spaced gold electrodes in acid solution can be turned from off [insulating; I] to on [conducting; C] to off again by monotonically sweeping a gate voltage applied to the solution. We propose that this ICI transistor action is due to an electrochemical process dependent on nanoparticles etched from the surface of the gold electrodes. These measurements mimic closely the characteristics of nanoscale acid-gated polyaniline transistors, so that researchers should guard against misinterpreting this effect in future molecular-electronics expe…
In this work, we combine two previously-incompatible techniques for defining electronic devices: shaping three-dimensional crystals by focused ion beam (FIB), and two-dimensional electrostatic accumulation of charge carriers. The principal challenge for this integration is nanometer-scale surface damage inherent to any FIB-based fabrication. We address this by using a sacrificial protective layer to preserve a selected pristine surface. The test case presented here is accumulation of 2D carriers by ionic liquid gating at the surface of a micron-scale SrTiO$_3$ lamella. Preservation of surface …
We present a technique to fabricate tunnel junctions between graphene and Al and Cu, with a Si back gate, as well as a simple theory of tunneling between a metal and graphene. We map the differential conductance of our junctions versus probe and back gate voltage, and observe fluctuations in the conductance that are directly related to the graphene density of states. The conventional strong-suppression of the conductance at the graphene Dirac point can not be clearly demonstrated, but a more robust signature of the Dirac point is found: the inflection in the conductance map caused by the elect…
By combined top- and backgating, we explore the correlation of superconductivity with band filling and electron confinement at the LaAlO$_3$-SrTiO$_3$ interface. We find that the top- and backgate voltages have distinctly different effects on the superconducting critical temperature, implying that the confining potential well has a profound effect on superconductivity. We investigate the origin of this behavior by comparing the gate-dependence of $T_c$ to the corresponding evolution of the band filling with gate voltage. For several backgate voltages, we observe maximum $T_c$ to consistently c…
Electric gating can strongly modulate a wide variety of physical properties in semiconductors and insulators, such as significant changes of conductivity in silicon, appearance of superconductivity in SrTiO3, the paramagnet-ferromagnet transition in (In,Mn)As and so on. The key to such modulation is charge accumulation in solids. Thus, it has been believed that such modulation is out of reach for conventional metals where the number of carriers is too large. However, success in tuning the Curie temperature of ultrathin cobalt gave hope of finally achieving such degree of control even in metall…
Ionic gating is a powerful technique to realize field-effect transistors (FETs) enabling experiments not possible otherwise. So far, ionic gating has relied on the use of top-electrolyte gates, which pose experimental constraints and make device fabrication complex. Promising results obtained recently in FETs based on solid-state electrolytes remain plagued by spurious phenomena of unknown origin, preventing proper transistor operation, and causing limited control and reproducibility. Here we explore a class of solid-state electrolytes for gating (Lithium-ion conducting glass-ceramics, LICGCs)…
We report on the fabrication and transport studies of a single-layer graphene p-n junction. Carrier type and density in two adjacent regions are individually controlled by electrostatic gating using a local top gate and a global back gate. A functionalized Al203 oxide that adheres to graphene and does not significantly affect its electronic properties is described. Measurements in the quantum Hall regime reveal new plateaus of two-terminal conductance across the junction at 1 and 3/2 times the quantum of conductance, e2/h, consistent with theory.
Cerium is a fascinating element exhibiting, with its different phases, long-range magnetic order and superconductivity in bulk form. The coupling of the 4f electron to sd conduction electrons and to the lattice is responsible for unique structural and electronic properties like the isostructural first-order solid-solid transition from the cubic $γ$ phase to the cubic $α$ phase, which is accompanied by a huge volume collapse of 14 %. While the $γ- α$ phase transition has been investigated for decades, experiments aiming at disentangling the 4f contribution to the electric conductance of the dif…
