It is well known that if a matrix $A\in\mathbb C^{n\times n}$ solves the matrix equation $f(A,A^H)=0$, where $f(x, y)$ is a linear bivariate polynomial, then $A$ is normal; $A$ and $A^H$ can be simultaneously reduced in a finite number of operations to tridiagonal form by a unitary congruence and, moreover, the spectrum of $A$ is located on a straight line in the complex plane. In this paper we present some generalizations of these properties for almost normal matrices which satisfy certain quadratic matrix equations arising in the study of structured eigenvalue problems for perturbed Hermitian and unitary matrices.
This paper is concerned with the distance of a symmetric tridiagonal Toeplitz matrix $T$ to the variety of similarly structured singular matrices, and with determining the closest matrix to $T$ in this variety. Explicit formulas are presented, that exploit the analysis of the sensitivity of the spectrum of $T$ with respect to structure-preserving perturbations of its entries.
The problem of computing recurrence coefficients of sequences of rational functions orthogonal with respect to a discrete inner product is formulated as an inverse eigenvalue problem for a pencil of Hessenberg matrices. Two procedures are proposed to solve this inverse eigenvalue problem, via the rational Arnoldi iteration and via an updating procedure using unitary similarity transformations. The latter is shown to be numerically stable. This problem and both procedures are generalized by considering biorthogonal rational functions with respect to a bilinear form. This leads to an inverse eig…

Quadratic matrix equations of the kind $A_1X^2+A_0X+A_{-1}=X$ are encountered in the analysis of Quasi--Birth-Death stochastic processes where the solution of interest is the minimal nonnegative solution $G$. In many queueing models, described by random walks in the quarter plane, the coefficients $A_1,A_0,A_{-1}$ are infinite tridiagonal matrices with an almost Toeplitz structure. Here, we analyze some fixed point iterations, including Newton's iteration, for the computation of $G$ and introduce effective algorithms and acceleration strategies which fully exploit the Toeplitz structure of the…
When computing the eigenstructure of matrix pencils associated with the passivity analysis of perturbed port-Hamiltonian descriptor system using a structured generalized eigenvalue method, one should make sure that the computed spectrum satisfies the symmetries that corresponds to this structure and the underlying physical system. We perform a backward error analysis and show that for matrix pencils associated with port-Hamiltonian descriptor systems and a given computed eigenstructure with the correct symmetry structure there always exists a nearby port-Hamiltonian descriptor system with exac…
In this paper, we propose a unified approach for solving structure-preserving eigenvalue embedding problem (SEEP) for quadratic regular matrix polynomials with symmetry structures. First, we determine perturbations of a quadratic matrix polynomial, unstructured or structured, such that the perturbed polynomials reproduce a desired invariant pair while maintaining the invariance of another invariant pair of the unperturbed polynomial. If the latter is unknown, it is referred to as no spillover perturbation. Then we use these results for solving the SEEP for structured quadratic matrix polynomia…
We propose new algorithms for singular value decomposition (SVD) of very large-scale matrices based on a low-rank tensor approximation technique called the tensor train (TT) format. The proposed algorithms can compute several dominant singular values and corresponding singular vectors for large-scale structured matrices given in a TT format. The computational complexity of the proposed methods scales logarithmically with the matrix size under the assumption that both the matrix and the singular vectors admit low-rank TT decompositions. The proposed methods, which are called the alternating lea…
This paper is devoted to the study of preservation of eigenvalues, Jordan structure and complementary invariant subspaces of structured matrices under structured perturbations. Perturbations and structure-preserving perturbations are determined such that a perturbed matrix reproduces a given subspace as an invariant subspace and preserves a pair of complementary invariant subspaces of the unperturbed matrix. These results are further utilized to obtain structure-preserving perturbations which modify certain eigenvalues of a given structured matrix and reproduce a set of desired eigenvalues whi…
The roots of a monic polynomial expressed in a Chebyshev basis are known to be the eigenvalues of the so-called colleague matrix, which is a Hessenberg matrix that is the sum of a symmetric tridiagonal matrix and a rank-1 matrix. The rootfinding problem is thus reformulated as an eigenproblem, making the computation of the eigenvalues of such matrices a subject of significant practical importance. In this manuscript, we describe an $O(n^2)$ explicit structured QR algorithm for colleague matrices and prove that it is componentwise backward stable, in the sense that the backward error in the col…
This paper is devoted to the study of perturbations of a matrix pencil, structured or unstructured, such that a perturbed pencil will reproduce a given deflating pair while maintaining the invariance of the complementary deflating pair. If the latter is unknown, it is referred to as no spillover updating. The specific structures considered in this paper include symmetric, Hermitian, $\star$-even, $\star$-odd and $\star$-skew-Hamiltonian/Hamiltonian pencils. This study is motivated by the well-known Finite Element Model Updating Problem in structural dynamics, where the given deflating pair rep…
We study the backward stability of running a backward stable eigenstructure solver on a pencil $S(λ)$ that is a strong linearization of a rational matrix $R(λ)$ expressed in the form $R(λ)=D(λ)+ C(λI_\ell-A)^{-1}B$, where $D(λ)$ is a polynomial matrix and $C(λI_\ell-A)^{-1}B$ is a minimal state-space realization. We consider the family of block Kronecker linearizations of $R(λ)$, which are highly structured pencils. Backward stable eigenstructure solvers applied to $S(λ)$ will compute the exact eigenstructure of a perturbed pencil $\widehat S(λ):=S(λ)+Δ_S(λ)$ and the special structure of $S(λ)…
We present fast numerical methods for computing the Hessenberg reduction of a unitary plus low-rank matrix $A=G+U V^H$, where $G\in \mathbb C^{n\times n}$ is a unitary matrix represented in some compressed format using $O(nk)$ parameters and $U$ and $V$ are $n\times k$ matrices with $k< n$. At the core of these methods is a certain structured decomposition, referred to as a LFR decomposition, of $A$ as product of three possibly perturbed unitary $k$ Hessenberg matrices of size $n$. It is shown that in most interesting cases an initial LFR decomposition of $A$ can be computed very cheaply. Then…
