We consider a minimal action of a finitely generated semigroup by homeomorphisms of a circle, and show that the collection of translation numbers of individual elements completely determines the set of generators (up to a common continuous change of coordinates). One of the main tools used in the proof is the synchronization properties of random dynamics of circle homeomorphisms: Antonov's theorem and its corollaries.
We introduce and study translation numbers for automorphisms of principal $\mathbb{Z}$-bundles and flat principal $\mathbb{R}$-bundles. We use them to show a vanishing result of a characteristic class of foliated bundles and to detect undistortion elements in the group of bundle automorphisms.
We prove that the dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on a translation surface that belong to a hyperelliptic component is bounded from below uniformly by sqrt{2}. This is in contrast to Penner's asymptotic. Penner proved that the logarithm of the least dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on a surface of genus g tends to zero at rate 1/g (as g goes to infinity). We also show that our uniform lower bound sqrt{2} is sharp. More precisely the least dilatation of a pseudo-Anosov on a genus g>1 translation surface in a hyperelliptic component belongs to the interval ]sqrt{2},sqr…

We study the action of the homeomorphism group of a surface $S$ on the fine curve graph ${\mathcal C }^\dagger(S)$. While the definition of $\mathcal{C}^\dagger(S)$ parallels the classical curve graph for mapping class groups, we show that the dynamics of the action of ${\mathrm{Homeo}}(S)$ on $\mathcal{C}^\dagger(S)$ is much richer: homeomorphisms induce parabolic isometries in addition to elliptics and hyperbolics, and all positive reals are realized as asymptotic translation lengths. When the surface $S$ is a torus, we relate the dynamics of the action of a homeomorphism on $\mathcal{C}^\da…
We give explicit pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms with vanishing Sah-Arnoux-Fathi invariant. Any translation surface whose Veech group is commensurable to any of a large class of triangle groups is shown to have an affine pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of this type. We also apply a reduction to finite triangle groups and thereby show the existence of non-parabolic elements in the periodic field of certain translation surfaces.
The families of right (left) translation finite subsets of a discrete infinite group $Γ$ are defined and shown to be ideals. Their kernels $Z_R$ and $Z_L$ are identified as the closure of the set of products $pq$ ($p\cdot q$) in the Čech-Stone compactification $βΓ$. Consequently it is shown that the map $π: βΓ\to Γ^{WAP}$, the canonical semigroup homomorphism from $βΓ$ onto $Γ^{WAP}$, the universal semitopological semigroup compactification of $Γ$, is a homeomorphism on the complement of $Z_R \cup Z_L$.
This article presents a generalization of the notion of \emph{Poincaré rotation set} to homeomorphisms of the adèle class group $\mathbb{A}/\mathbb{Q}$ of the rational numbers $\mathbb{Q}$, which is a connected compact abelian group which can be identified with the one-dimensional universal solenoid $\mathbf{S}$, \ie the algebraic universal covering of the circle. The definition is first introduced in general for homeomorphisms of $\mathbf{S}$ which are isotopic to a translation, and then specializing in homeomorphisms of $\mathbf{S}$ isotopic to the identity, in which case the rotation set is…
Poincare's classification of the dynamics of homeomorphisms of the circle is one of the earliest, but still one of the most elegant, classification results in dynamical systems. Here we generalize this to quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms, which have been the subject of considerable interest in recent years. Herman already showed two decades ago that a unique rotation number exists for all orbits in the quasiperiodically forced case. However, unlike the unforced case, no a priori bounds exist for the deviations from the average rotation. This plays an important role in the attempt…
In this paper we present a generalization of Poincaré's Rotation Theory of homeomorphisms of the circle to the case of one-dimensional compact abelian groups which are solenoidal groups, {\it i.e.}, groups which fiber over the circle with fiber a Cantor abelian group. We define rotation elements, \emph{à la} Poincaré and discuss the dynamical properties of translations on these solenoidal groups. We also study the semiconjugation problem when the rotation element generates a dense subgroup of the solenoidal group. Finally, we comment on the relation between Rotation Theory and entropy for thes…
We show that a smooth sufficiently small perturbation of a $\mathbb Z^m$ action on the torus by simultaneously Diophantine translations, is smoothly conjugate to the unperturbed action under a natural condition on the rotation sets. This generalizes recent result of Karaliolios [4] of the action generators to higher rank abelian actions, and the result of Moser [8] to higher dimensional tori.
In 1996, A. Norton and D. Sullivan asked the following question: If $f:\mathbb{T}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{T}^2$ is a diffeomorphism, $h:\mathbb{T}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{T}^2$ is a continuous map homotopic to the identity, and $h f=T_ρ h$ where $ρ\in\mathbb{R}^2$ is a totally irrational vector and $T_ρ:\mathbb{T}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{T}^2,\, z\mapsto z+ρ$ is a translation, are there natural geometric conditions (e.g. smoothness) on $f$ that force $h$ to be a homeomorphism? In [ J. Wang and Z. Zhang, GAFA 2018 ], the first author and Z. Zhang gave a negative answer to the above question in the $C^{\inf…
We study the minimality of almost every orbital branch of minimal iterated function systems (IFSs). We prove that this kind of minimality holds for forward and backward minimal IFSs generated by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the circle. We provide new examples of iterated functions systems where this behavior persists under perturbation of the generators.
In this article, we focus on the left translation actions on noncommutative compact connected Lie groups with topological dimension 3 or 4, consisting of ${\rm SU}(2),\,{\rm U}(2),\,{\rm SO}(3),\,{\rm SO}(3) \times S^1$ and ${\rm Spin}^{\mathbb{C}}(3)$. We define the rotation vectors (numbers) of the left actions induced by the elements in the maximal tori of these groups, and utilize rotation vectors (numbers) to give the topologically conjugate classification of the left actions. Algebraic conjugacy and smooth conjugacy are also considered. As a by-product, we show that for any homeomorphism…
Let $\textbf{a}_1,\dots, \textbf{a}_r$ be vectors in a half-space of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We call $$C=\textbf{a}_1\mathbb{R}^++\cdots+\textbf{a}_r \mathbb{R}^+$$ a convex polyhedral cone, and call $\{\textbf{a}_1,\dots, \textbf{a}_r\}$ a generator set of $C$. A generator set with the minimal cardinality is called a frame. We investigate the translation tilings of convex polyhedral cones. Let $T\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a compact set such that $T$ is the closure of its interior, and $\mathcal{J}\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a discrete set. We say $(T,\mathcal{J})$ is a translation tiling of $C$ if $T+\mat…
The theme of this paper is that algebraic complexity implies dynamical complexity for pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of a closed surface S_g of genus g. Penner proved that the logarithm of the minimal dilatation for a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of S_g tends to zero at the rate 1/g. We consider here the smallest dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of S_g acting trivially on Gamma/Gamma_k, the quotient of Gamma = pi_1(S_g) by the k-th term of its lower central series, k > 0. In contrast to Penner's asymptotics, we prove that this minimal dilatation is bounded above and below, independen…
We propose a general framework for studying pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms on translation surfaces. This new approach, among other consequences, allows us to compute the systole of the Teichmueller geodesic flow restricted to the hyperelliptic connected components, settling a question of Farb. We stress that all proofs and computations are performed without the help of a computer. As a byproduct, our methods give a way to describe the bottom of the lengths spectrum of the hyperelliptic components.
