We study a number of filtering schemes for the reduction of the statistical error in non-adiabatic calculations by means of the quantum-classical Liouville equation. In particular, we focus on a scheme based on setting a threshold value on the sampling weights, so that when the threshold is overcome the value of the weight is reset, and on another approach which prunes the ensemble of the allowed non-adiabatic transitions according to a generalised sampling probability. Both methods have advantages and drawbacks, however their combination drastically improves the performance of an algorithm known as the Sequential Short Time Step Propagation [D. MacKernan et al., J. Phys: Condens. Matter {\bf 14} 9069 (2002)], which is derived from a simple first order expansion of the quantum-classical propagator. Such an algorithm together with the combined filtering procedures produce results that compare very well with those obtained by means of numerically "exact" quantum calculations for the spin-boson model, even for intermediate and strong coupling regimes.
We analyze two approaches to the quantum-classical Liouville (QCL) formalism that differ in the order of two operations: Wigner transformation and projection onto adiabatic electronic states. The analysis is carried out on a two-dimensional linear vibronic model where geometric phase (GP) effects arising from a conical intersection profoundly affect nuclear dynamics. We find that the Wigner-then-Adiabatic (WA) QCL approach captures GP effects, whereas the Adiabatic-then-Wigner (AW) QCL approach does not. Moreover, the Wigner transform in AW-QCL leads to an ill-defined Fourier transform of doub…
We discuss the filtering of the vibrational states of a cold atom in an optical trap, by chaining this trap with two empty ones and controlling adiabatically the tunneling. Matter wave filtering is performed by selectively transferring the population of the highest populated vibrational state to the most distant trap while the population of the rest of the states remains in the initial trap. Analytical conditions for two-state filtering are derived and then applied to an arbitrary number of populated bound states. Realistic numerical simulations close to state-of-the-art experimental arrangeme…
We introduce here a coherent technique to inject, extract, and velocity filter neutral atoms in a ring trap coupled via tunneling to two additional waveguides. By adiabatically following the transverse spatial dark state, the proposed technique allows for an efficient and robust velocity dependent atomic population transfer between the ring and the input/output waveguides. We have derived explicit conditions for the spatial adiabatic passage that depend on the atomic velocity along the input waveguide as well as on the initial population distribution among the transverse vibrational states. Th…
We present a new theorem describing stable solutions for a driven quantum system. The theorem, coined `inertial theorem', is applicable for fast driving, provided the acceleration rate is small. The theorem states that in the inertial limit eigenoperators of the propagator remain invariant throughout the dynamics, accumulating dynamical and geometric phases. The proof of the theorem utilizes the structure of Liouville space and a closed Lie algebra of operators. We demonstrate applications of the theorem by studying three explicit solutions of a harmonic oscillator, a two-level and three-level…
Quantum thermodynamics aims at investigating both the emergence and the limits of the laws of thermodynamics from a quantum mechanical microscopic approach. In this scenario, thermodynamic processes with no heat exchange, namely, adiabatic transformations, can be implemented through quantum evolutions in closed systems, even though the notion of a closed system is always an idealization and approximation. Here, we begin by theoretically discussing thermodynamic adiabatic processes in open quantum systems, which evolve non-unitarily under decoherence due to its interaction with its surrounding …
In this paper, we present a hybrid quantum/classical algorithm to solve an NP-hard combinatorial problem called the multiple target data association (MTDA) and tracking problem. We use diabatic quantum annealing (DQA) to enumerate the low energy, or high probability, feasible assignments, and we use a classical computer to find the Bayesian expected mean track estimate by summing over these assignments. We demonstrate our hybrid quantum/classical approach on a simple example. This may be the first demonstration of a Bayesian hybrid quantum-classical multiple target tracking filter. We contrast…
In this paper we formulate limit Zeno dynamics of general open systems as the adiabatic elimination of fast components. We are able to exploit previous work on adiabatic elimination of quantum stochastic models to give explicitly the conditions under which open Zeno dynamics will exist. The open systems formulation is further developed as a framework for Zeno master equations, and Zeno filtering (that is, quantum trajectories based on a limit Zeno dynamical model). We discuss several models from the point of view of quantum control. For the case of linear quantum stochastic systems we present …
We consider two spin-1/2 particles with isotropic Heisenberg interaction, as the working substance of a quantum heat engine. We observe a frictional effect on the adiabatic branches of the heat cycle, which arises due to an inhomogeneous driving at a finite rate of the external magnetic field. The frictional effect is characterized by entropy production in the system and reduction in the work extracted. Corresponding to a sudden and a very slow driving, we find expressions for the lower and upper bounds of work that can be extracted on the adiabatic branches. These bounds are also confirmed wi…

We present a quantum eigenstate filtering algorithm based on quantum signal processing (QSP) and minimax polynomials. The algorithm allows us to efficiently prepare a target eigenstate of a given Hamiltonian, if we have access to an initial state with non-trivial overlap with the target eigenstate and have a reasonable lower bound for the spectral gap. We apply this algorithm to the quantum linear system problem (QLSP), and present two algorithms based on quantum adiabatic computing (AQC) and quantum Zeno effect respectively. Both algorithms prepare the final solution as a pure state, and achi…

In this paper a formalism for studying the dynamics of quantum systems coupled to classical spin environments is reviewed. The theory is based on generalized antisymmetric brackets and naturally predicts open-path off-diagonal geometric phases in the evolution of the density matrix. It is shown that such geometric phases must also be considered in the quantum-classical Liouville equation for a classical bath with canonical phase space coordinates; this occurs whenever the adiabatics basis is complex (as in the case of a magnetic field coupled to the quantum subsystem). When the quantum subsyst…
We present a driving scheme for solid-state quantum emitters using frequency-swept pulses containing a spectral hole resonant with the optical transition in the emitter. Our scheme enables high-fidelity state inversion, exhibits robustness to variations in the laser pulse parameters and is immune to phonon-mediated excitation-induced dephasing, benefits that derive from the the insensitivity of the adiabaticity condition to variations in the experimental parameters. Our resonant driving approach could be combined with spectral filtering of the scattered pump light and photonic devices for enha…
The Stochastic Liouville-von Neumann (SLN) equation describes the dynamics of an open quantum system reduced density matrix coupled to a non-Markovian harmonic environment. The interaction with the environment is represented by complex coloured noises which drive the system, and whose correlation functions are set by the properties of the environment. We present a number of schemes capable of generating coloured noises of this kind that are built on a noise amplitude reduction procedure [Imai et al, Chem. Phys. 446, 134 (2015)], including two analytically optimised schemes. In doing so, we pay…
