We have compiled a catalogue of eclipsing variable stars, the largest catalogue, containing classified eclipsing binaries. A procedure for the classification of eclipsing binaries, based on the catalogued data, is also developed. It was applied to unclassified eclipsing binaries. In this paper we discuss eclipsing binaries, which can not be classified with the procedure. Some of them belong to marginal evolutionary classes. Observational data for others are too contradictory, and additional observations are needed to attribute them to one or another evolutionary class.
Binaries play key roles in determining stellar parameters and exploring stellar evolution models. We build a catalog of 88 eclipsing binaries with spectroscopic information, taking advantage of observations from both the Large Sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) and the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) surveys. Detached eclipsing binaries are the primary tool used to measure precise masses and radii of stars. In our previous paper estimating the parameters of more than 30,000 detached eclipsing binaries, we identified 766 eclipsing binaries with additional features in their All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) light curves. The purpose of this work is to extend a sample of accurately modeled, benchmark-grade eclipsing binaries with accurately determined masses and radii. We select four "well-behaved" Kepler binaries, KIC2306740, KIC4076952, KIC5193386 and KIC5288543, each with at least 8 double-lined spectra from the apogee instrument that is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys III and IV, and from the Hobby-Eberly High Resolution Spectrograph. New times of minima of the eclipsing binaries GK Cep and VY Cet, obtained at the Observatory of the University of Athens, have been used together with all reliable timings found in the literature in order to study the period variation and search for the presence of third body in the systems.
Many short-period binary stars have distant orbiting companions that have played a role in driving the binary components into close separation. Indirect detection of a tertiary star is possible by measuring apparent changes in eclipse times of eclipsing binaries as the binary orbits the common center of mass. For more than three years now we have been conducting a spectroscopic survey of detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) from the All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) database. Thousands of high-resolution spectra of over 300 systems were secured, and used for radial velocity measurements and spectral analysis. In our sample we found a zoo of multiple systems, such as spectroscopic triples and quadruples, visual binaries with eclipsing components, and circumbinary low-mass companions, including sub-stellar-mass candidates

We report on the search for new eclipsing white dwarf plus main-sequence (WDMS) binaries in the light curves of the Catalina surveys. We use a colour selected list of almost 2000 candidate WDMS systems from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, specifically designed to identify WDMS systems with cool white dwarfs and/or early M type main-sequence stars. We identify a total of 17 eclipsing systems, 14 of which are new discoveries. We also find 3 candidate eclipsing systems, 2 main-sequence eclipsing binaries and 22 non-eclipsing close binaries. The goal of this work is to conduct a photometric study of eclipsing binaries in M31. We apply a modified box-fitting algorithm to search for eclipsing binary candidates and determine their period. We classify these candidates into detached, semi-detached, and contact systems using the Fourier decomposition method. We cross-match the position of our detached candidates with the photometry from Local Group Survey (Massey et al. 2006) and select 13 candidates brighter than 20.5 magnitude in V. New complete light and radial velocities curves were obtained for the eclipsing binaries CC Her and CM Lac. The data are analysed with modern techniques in order to derive the physical parameters of the systems and study their present evolutionary status. We found that CC Her is a classical Algol type binary, while CM Lac is a detached system with two Main Sequence stars in asynchronous orbit.
Gaia provided the largest-ever catalogue of white dwarf stars. We use this catalogue, along with the third public data release of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), to identify new eclipsing white dwarf binaries. Our method exploits light curve statistics and the Box Least Squares algorithm to detect periodic light curve variability. The search revealed 18 new binaries, of which 17 are eclipsing. Eclipsing binary systems with pulsating components offer a unique possibility to accurately measure the most important parameters of pulsating stars, to study their evolution, and to test the pulsation theory. I will show what we can learn about the pulsating stars from the analysis of such systems and how we can do it. In eclipsing binaries the stellar rotation of the two components will cause a rotational Doppler beaming during eclipse ingress and egress when only part of the eclipsed component is covered. For eclipsing binaries with fast spinning components this photometric analogue of the well-known spectroscopic Rossiter-McLaughlin effect can exceed the strength of the orbital effect. We propose a procedure for light-curve solution of eclipsing binary stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud for which photometric data have been obtained in the framework of the OGLE project as well as way of determination of the global stellar parameters on the basis of the obtained solutions, some empirical relations as well as the distance to the SMC. Several examples illustrate this procedure.
We measure the binarity of detached M-dwarfs in the Kepler field with orbital periods in the range of 1-90 days. Kepler's photometric precision and nearly continuous monitoring of stellar targets over time baselines ranging from 3 months to 4 years make its detection efficiency for eclipsing binaries nearly complete over this period range and for all radius ratios. The study of oscillations and pulsations is increasingly vital for determining the properties of single stars, and investigating the physical phenomena active in their interiors. Eclipsing binaries are vital for directly determining stellar parameters without reliance on models or scaling relations. Spectroscopically derived parameters of detached and semi-detached binaries allow us to determine component masses that can inform theories of stellar and binary evolution. Here we present moderate resolution ground-based spectra of stars in close binary systems with and without (detected) tertiary companions observed by NASA's Kepler mission and analyzed for eclipse timing variations. We have determined the apsidal motion rate of 27 double-lined eclipsing binaries with precise physical parameters. The obtained values, corrected for their relativistic contribution, yield precise empirical parameters of the internal stellar density concentration. The comparison of these results with the predictions based on new theoretical models shows very good agreement. Small deviations are identified but remain within the observational uncertainties and the path for a refined comparison is indicated.
Plenty of mid-eclipse timings of short-periodic eclipsing binaries derived from series of visual observations appear to be an acceptable source of information for orbital period analyses, namely if they were done in time-intervals not covered by other types of observations. However, our thorough period analysis of the nearly contact eclipsing binary BS Vulpeculae proves that visually determined timings done in 1979--2003 were undoubtedly biased to accommodate the existing linear ephemeris. We have developed a procedure for the classification of eclipsing binaries from their light-curve parameters and spectral type. The procedure was tested on more than 1000 systems with known classification, and its efficiency was estimated for every evolutionary status we use. The procedure was applied to about 4700 binaries with no classification, and the vast majority of them was classified successfully. We analyze multicolor light curves of six totally eclipsing, short-period W UMa binaries and derive, for the first time, their orbital and stellar parameters. The mass ratios are established robustly through an automated q-search procedure that performs a heuristic survey of the parameter space. Five stars belong to the W and one to the A subtype. The mass ratios range from 0.23 to 0.51 and the fillouts from 10 to 15%. We estimate the ages and discuss the evolutionary status of these objects in comparison with a sample of other short-period W UMa binaries from the literature.
We present the collection of eclipsing binaries in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, based on the OGLE survey. It contains 48605 systems, 40204 belonging to the LMC and 8401 to the SMC. Out of the total number of the presented binaries, 16374 are the new ones. We present the time-series photometry obtained for the selected objects during the fourth phase of the OGLE project. The catalog has been created using a two step machine learning procedure based on the Random Forest algorithm.
We analyse the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey light curves of 835 spectroscopically confirmed white dwarf plus main-sequence binaries from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with g<19, in search of new eclipsing systems. We identify 29 eclipsing systems, 12 of which were previously unknown. This brings the total number of eclipsing white dwarf plus main-sequence binaries to 49. More than three hundred years ago, Ole Romer measured the speed of light only by observing the periodic shifting of the observed eclipse arrival times of Jupiter's moons arising from the varying Earth-Jupiter distance. Traditionally, the effects of interstellar extinction on binary star light curves have been treated as a uniform reduction in the observed brightness of the system that is independent of orbital phase. However, unless the orbital plane of the system coincides with the plane of the sky, or if the two stars are completely identical and present with minimal mutual irradiation and tidal/rotational distortions, then this is unlikely to be an accurate representation of the effect of interstellar extinction. Twenty-one eclipsing binaries were selected for an analysis from a huge database of observations made by the INTEGRAL/OMC camera. The photometric data were processed and analyzed, resulting in a first light-curve study of these neglected eclipsing binaries. In several systems from this sample even their orbital periods have been confirmed or modified. Thirty-two new minima times of these binaries have been derived.
We present fundamental parameters of 4 massive eclipsing binaries in the young massive cluster Westerlund 1. The goal is to measure accurate masses and radii of their component stars, which provide much needed constraints for evolutionary models of massive stars. Accurate parameters can further be used to determine a dynamical lower limit for the magnetar progenitor and to obtain an independent distance to the cluster. Our results confirm and extend the evidence for a high mass for the progenitor of the magnetar.
We present a spectroscopic and photometric analysis of the multiple system and early-type eclipsing binary SZ Cam (O9IV + B0.5V), which consists of an eclipsing SB2 pair of orbital period P=2.7 days in a long orbit (about 55 yrs) around a non-eclipsing SB1 pair of orbital period P=2.8 days. We have reconstructed the spectra of the individual components of SZ Cam from the observed composite spectra using the technique of spectral disentangling. The Super Wide Angle Search for Planets (SuperWASP) is a whole-sky high-cadence optical survey which has searched for exoplanetary transit signatures since 2004. Its archive contains long-term light curves for ~30 million 8-15 V magnitude stars, making it a valuable serendipitous resource for variable star research. We have concentrated on the evidence it provides for eclipsing binaries, in particular those exhibiting orbital period variations, and have developed custom tools to measure periods precisely and detect period changes reliably. We present catalog of 26 121 visually inspected eclipsing binary stars identified in the Large Magellanic Cloud during the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. The sample is limited to the out-of-eclipse brightness I < 20 mag. The catalog consists mostly of detached eclipsing binaries - ellipsoidal variables were not included. For stars brighter than I = 18 mag the detection rate of eclipsing binaries is 0.5% and for all stars it falls to 0.2%. Eclipsing binaries with a $δ$ Sct component are powerful tools to derive the fundamental parameters and probe the internal structure of stars. In this study, spectral analysis of 6 primary $δ$ Sct components in eclipsing binaries has been performed. Values of $T_{\rm eff}$, $v \sin i$, and metallicity for the stars have been derived from medium-resolution spectroscopy. We present the results of a spectroscopic campaign on eclipsing binaries with long orbital period (P = 20 - 75 d) carried out with the CHIRON spectrograph. Physical and orbital solutions for seven systems were derived from the V-band, and I-band ASAS, WASP, and TESS photometry, while radial velocities were calculated from high quality optical spectra using a two-dimensional cross-correlation technique. Photometric observations in V and I bands of six eclipsing binaries at the lower limit of the orbital periods of W UMa stars are presented. Three of them are newly discovered eclipsing systems. The light curve solutions revealed that all short-period targets were contact or overcontact binaries and added new six binaries to the family of short-period systems with estimated parameters. Four binaries have equal in size components and mass ratio near 1. The photometric and spectroscopic data for three double-lined detached eclipsing binaries were collected from the photometric and spectral surveys. The light and radial velocity curves of each binary system were simultaneously analyzed by using Wilson-Devinney (WD) code, and the absolute physical and orbital parameters of these binaries were derived. The two objects 1SWASP J150822.80-054236.9 and 1SWASP J160156.04+202821.6 were initially detected from their SuperWASP archived light curves as candidate eclipsing binaries with periods close to the short-period cut-off of the orbital period distribution of main sequence binaries, at ~0.2 d. This research is our forth article related to the topic of cyclic O-C changes, third components as the physical process that cause these changes and elliptical orbits of the third components. Here five more eclipsing binary stars were investigated: EQ Tau, IR Cas, IV Cas, RY Aqr and RZ Com. All of them have cyclic O-C curve with superposition of parabolic trend. We computed the mass transfer rate, minima possible mass of the third component and their errors for each of the researched stars.
CCD multi-band light curves of the neglected eclipsing binaries V405 Cep, V948 Her, KR Mon and UZ Sge were obtained and analysed using the Wilson-Devinney code. We carried out photometric and low-resolution spectral observations of six eclipsing ultrashort-period binaries with MS components. The light curve solutions of the Rozhen observations show that all targets are overcontact systems. We found well-defined empirical relation "period -- semi-major axis" for the short-period binaries and used it for estimation of the global parameters of the targets. Compact stellar binaries are expected to survive in the dense environment of the Galactic Center. The stable binaries may undergo Kozai-Lidov oscillations due to perturbations from the central supermassive black hole (Sgr A*), yet the General Relativistic precession can suppress the Kozai-Lidov oscillations and keep the stellar binaries from merging. High precision CCD observations of six totally eclipsing contact binaries were presented and analyzed. It is found that only one target is an A-type contact binary (V429 Cam), while the others are W-type contact ones. By analyzing the times of light minima, we discovered that two of them exhibit secular period increase while three manifest long-term period decrease. Over 2500 eclipsing binaries were identified and characterized from the ultra-precise photometric data provided by the Kepler space telescope. Kepler is now beginning its second mission, K2, which is proving to again provide ultra-precise photometry for a large sample of eclipsing binary stars. In the 1951 light curves covering 12 days in the K2 engineering data-set, we have identified and determined the ephemerides for 31 eclipsing binaries that demonstrate the capabilities for eclipsing binary science in the upcoming campaigns in K2. We present a census of eclipsing binary systems with classical Cepheid as a component. All such systems known were found in the OGLE collection of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic System. We extend the list of potential candidates adding four new objects found in the OGLE-IV photometric data. One of the new Cepheids in the eclipsing system, OGLE-SMC-CEP-3235, revealed only one eclipse during 15 years of the OGLE photometric monitoring. The mass-luminosity relation is a fundamental law of astrophysics. We have suggested that the currently used mass-luminosity relation is not correct for the M/M_sun > 2.7 range of mass since it was created using double-lined eclipsing binaries, where the components are synchronized and consequently change each other's evolutionary path. To exclude this effect we have started a project to study long-period massive eclipsing binaries in order to construct radial velocity curves and determine masses for the components. Westerlund 1 is one of the most massive young clusters known in the Local Group, with an age of 3-5 Myr. We present a catalog of 56 candidate intermediate mass eclipsing binary systems extracted from the 3rd data release of the All Sky Automated Survey. We gather pertinent observational data and derive orbital properties, including ephemerides, for these systems as a prelude to anticipated spectroscopic observations. We find that 37 of the 56, or ~66% of the systems are not identified in the Simbad Astronomical Database as known binaries. Age constraints are most often placed on globular clusters by comparing their CMDs with theoretical isochrones. The recent discoveries of detached, eclipsing binaries in such systems by the Cluster AgeS Experiment (CASE) provide new insights into their ages and, at the same time, much needed tests of stellar evolution models. We present new analysis of O-C diagrams variations of three Algol-type eclipsing binary stars AD And, TW Cas and IV Cas. We have used all published minima times (including visual and photographic) as well as new determined ones from our and SuperWasp observations. We determined orbital parameters of the 3rd bodies in the systems with statistically significant errors, using our code based on genetic algorithms and Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation. We confirmed multiple nature of AD And and triple-star model of TW Cas and we proposed quadruple-star model of IV Cas.
V498 Cyg is an early-B-type binary known to show eclipses on a period of 3.48 d, and two sets of spectral lines. We present the discovery of a second set of eclipses, on a 1.44-d period, in the light curve of this object from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We develop a model of the light curve to simultaneously fit the properties of both eclipsing binaries and apply this to the TESS observations. The presence of r mode oscillations (global modes of Rossby waves coupled with buoyancy) in an eclipsing binary is recognized as frequency groups in a frequency-amplitude diagram obtained from a Fourier analysis of Kepler light curve data. The frequency at the upper bound of an r-mode frequency group is close to the rotation frequency of the star. Analysing about eight hundred Kepler light curves of eclipsing binaries finds about seven hundred cases showing the signature of r modes.
