We compute Raman scattering intensities via the lowest-order coupling to the bosonic propagator associated with orbital nematic fluctuations in a minimal model for iron pnictides. The model consists of two bands on a square lattice exhibiting four Fermi pockets and a transition from the normal to a nematic state. It is shown that the orbital fluctuations produce in the B1g channel strong quasi-elastic light scattering around the nematic critical temperature Tn, both above and below Tn. This holds for the A1g symmetry only below Tn whereas no low-energy scattering from orbital fluctuations is found in the B2g symmetry. Due to the nematic distortion the electron pocket at the X-point may disappear at low temperatures. Such a Lifshitz transition causes in the B2g spectrum a large upward shift of spectral weight in the high energy region whereas no effect is seen in the other symmetries.
Raman experiments on bulk FeSe revealed that the low-frequency part of $B_{1g}$ Raman response $R_{B_{1g}}$, which probes nematic fluctuations, rapidly decreases below the nematic transition at $T_n \sim 85$K. Such behavior is usually associated with the gap opening and at a first glance is inconsistent with the fact that FeSe remains a metal below $T_n$, with sizable hole and electron pockets. We argue that the drop of $R_{B_{1g}}$ in a nematic metal comes about because the nematic order drastically changes the orbital content of the pockets and makes them nearly mono-orbital. In this situati…
We establish a relation between the Raman response function in the $B_{1g}$ channel and the electronic contribution to the nematic susceptibility within the spin-driven approach to electron nematicity of the iron based superconductors. The spin-driven nematic phase, characterized by the broken $C_4$ symmetry, but unbroken $O(3$) spin-rotational symmetry, is generated by the presence of magnetic fluctuations associated with the striped phase. It occurs as a separate phase between $T_N$ and $T_s$ in systems where the structural and magnetic phase transitions are separated. Detecting the presence…
Recent Raman scattering experiments have revealed a "quasi-elastic peak" in $\mathrm{FeSe_{1-x}S_x}$ near an Ising-nematic quantum critical point (QCP) \cite{zhang17}. Notably, the peak occurs at sub-temperature frequencies, and softens as $T^α$ when temperature is decreased toward the QCP, with $α>1$. In this work, we present a theoretical analysis of the low-frequency Raman response using a memory matrix approach. We show that such a quasi-elastic peak is associated with the relaxation of an Ising-nematic deformation of the Fermi surface. Specifically, we find that the peak frequency is prop…
We use the symmetry constrained low energy effective Hamiltonian of iron based superconductors to study the Raman scattering in the normal state of underdoped iron-based superconductors. The incoming and scattered Raman photons couple directly to orbital fluctuations and indirectly to the spin fluctuations. We computed both couplings within the same low energy model. The symmetry constrained Hamiltonian yields the coupling between the orbital and spin fluctuations of only the same symmetry type. Attraction in B2g symmetry channel was assumed for the system to develop the subleading instability…
We use polarized Raman scattering to study the structural phase transition in EuFe2As2, the parent compound of the 122-ferropnictide superconductors. The in-plane lattice anisotropy is characterized by measurements of the side surface with different strains induced using different preparation methods. We show that while a fine surface polishing leaves the samples free of residual internal strain, in which case the onset of the C4 symmetry breaking is observed at the nominal structural phase transition temperature Ts, cutting the side surface induces a permanent four-fold rotational symmetry C4…
We report a Raman scattering study of nematic degrees of freedom in the iron-based superconductor parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under tunable uniaxial strain. We demonstrate that the polarization resolved arsenic (As) phonon intensity can be used to monitor the nematic order parameter as a function of both temperature and strain. At low temperature in the nematic ordered phase we use it to track the continuous and reversible orientation of nematic domains under variable strain. At higher temperature, the evolution of the As phonon intensity under strain reflects an enhanced nematic susceptibi…
The emergence of the nematic order and fluctuations has been discussed as a central issue in Fe-based superconductors. To clarify the origin of the nematicity, we focus on the shear modulus $C_{66}$ and the Raman quadrupole susceptibility $χ_{x^2-y^2}^{Raman}$. Due to the Aslamazov-Larkin vertex correction, the nematic-type orbital fluctuations are induced, and they enhances both $1/C_{66}$ and $χ_{x^2-y^2}^{Raman}$ strongly. However, $χ_{x^2-y^2}^{Raman}$ remains finite even at the structure transition temperature $T_S$, because of the absence of the band Jahn-Teller effect and the Pauli (=in…
We review the recent developments in electronic Raman scattering measurements of charge nematic fluctuations in iron-based superconductors. A simple theoretical framework of a $d$-wave Pomeranchuk transition is proposed in order to capture the salient features of the spectra. We discuss the available Raman data in the normal state of 122 iron-based systems, particularly Co doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$, and we show that the low energy quasi-elastic peak, the extracted nematic susceptibility and the scattering rates are consistent with an electronic driven structural phase transition. In the superconduc…
We report Raman scattering measurement of charge nematic fluctuations in the tetragonal phase of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (x=0.04) single crystals. In both systems, the observed nematic fluctuations are found to exhibit divergent Curie-Weiss like behavior with very similar characteristic temperature scales, indicating a universal tendency towards charge nematic order in 122 iron-based superconductors.
In a fully-gapped superconductor the electronic Raman response has a pair-breaking peak at twice the superconducting gap $Δ$, if the Bogoliubov excitations are uncorrelated. Motivated by the iron based superconductors, we study how this peak is modified if the superconducting phase hosts a nematic-structural quantum critical point. We show that, upon approaching this point by tuning, e.g., doping, the growth of nematic correlations between the quasiparticles transforms the pair-breaking peak into a nematic resonance. The mode energy is below 2$Δ$, and stays finite at the quantum critical point…
The pseudogap regime of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors is characterized by a variety of competing orders, the nature of which are still widely debated. Recent experiments have provided evidence for electron nematic order, in which the electron fluid breaks rotational symmetry while preserving translational invariance. Raman spectroscopy, with its ability to symmetry resolve low energy excitations, is a unique tool that can be used to assess nematic fluctuations and nematic ordering tendencies. Here, we compare results from determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbar…
Recent finding of an {\it unusual} in-plane resistivity anisotropy in the underdoped 122-family at high temperature ($T$) suggests an orbital nematic (ON) order, posing a challenge to extant theories. The {\it sign} of the anisotropy contradicts expectations from weakly correlated as well as pure spin-only nematic views. Here, we show how such an ON order with accompanying structural distortion arises from {\it residual}, intersite and inter-orbital two-body interactions in an incoherent "bad metal" close to Mottness. Enhancement of orbital-selective incoherence is shown to be necessary for un…
The electronic nematic phase is an unconventional state of matter that spontaneously breaks the rotational symmetry of electrons. In iron-pnictides/chalcogenides and cuprates, the nematic ordering and fluctuations have been suggested to have as-yet-unconfirmed roles in superconductivity. However, most studies have been conducted in thermal equilibrium, where the dynamical property and excitation can be masked by the coupling with the lattice. Here we use femtosecond optical pulse to perturb the electronic nematic order in FeSe. Through time-, energy-, momentum- and orbital-resolved photo-emiss…
Raman scattering experiments on LaFeAsO with splitted antiferromagnetic (T_AFM = 140 K) and tetragonal-orthorhombic (T_S = 155 K) transitions show a quasi-elastic peak (QEP) in B2g symmetry (2 Fe tetragonal cell) that fades away below ~T_AFM and is ascribed to electronic nematic fluctuations. A scaling of the reported shear modulus with the T-dependence of the QEP height rather than the QEP area indicates that magnetic degrees of freedom drive the structural transition. The large separation between T_S and T_AFM in LaFeAsO compared with their coincidence in BaFe2As2 manifests itself in slower …
Electronic nematicity, proposed to exist in a number of transition metal materials, can have different microscopic origins. In particular, the anisotropic resistivity and meta-magnetic jumps observed in Sr3Ru2O7 are consistent with an earlier proposal that the isotropic-nematic transition is generically first order and accompanied by meta-magnetism when tuned by a magnetic field. However, additional striking experimental features such as a non-Fermi liquid resistivity and critical thermodynamic behavior imply the presence of an unidentified quantum critical point (QCP). Here we show that orbit…
In this paper, we study theoretically the behaviors of the magnetic excitations(MEs) in the normal and nematic phases of iron pnictides. The normal state MEs exhibit commensurability to diamond and to square-like structure transition with the increase of energy. This structure transition persists in the spin and orbital scenarios of nematic phases, although the MEs show anisotropic behaviors due to the C4 symmetry breaking induced by the nematic orders. The MEs exhibit distinct energy evolution behaviors between the spin and orbital scenarios of nematicity. For the spinnematic scenario, the an…
We present a theory of the Raman scattering from the orbital wave excitations in manganese oxides. Two excitation processes of the Raman scattering are proposed. The Raman scattering cross section is formulated by using the pseudospin operator for orbital degree of freedom in a Mn ion. The Raman spectra from the orbital wave excitations are calculated and their implications in the recent experimental results reported in LaMnO$_3$ are discussed.
Using electronic Raman spectroscopy, we report direct measurements of charge nematic fluctuations in the tetragonal phase of strain-free Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x})_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals. The strong enhancement of the Raman response at low temperatures unveils an underlying charge nematic state that extends to superconducting compositions and which has hitherto remained unnoticed. Comparison between the extracted charge nematic susceptibility and the elastic modulus allows us to disentangle the charge contribution to the nematic instability, and to show that charge nematic fluctuations are we…
We employ polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy to study multi-band stoichiometric superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$. The B$_{2g}$ symmetry Raman response shows no signatures of Pomeranchuk-like electronic nematic fluctuations which is observed for many other Fe-based superconductors. In the superconducting state, we identify three pair-breaking peaks at 13.8, 16.9 and 21 meV and full spectral weight suppression at low energies. The pair-breaking peak energies in Raman response are about 20% lower than twice the gap energies as measured by single-particle spectroscopy, implying a sub-dominant …
We report on $^{75}$As-NMR measurements in single crystalline BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.96}$P$_{0.04}$)$_{2}$ for magnetic fields parallel to the orthorhombic $[110]_{\rm o}$ and $[100]_{\rm o}$ directions above the structural transition temperature $T_{\rm S}\simeq121$ K. A large difference in the linewidth between the two field directions reveals in-plane anisotropy of the electric field gradient, even in the tetragonal phase. This provides microscopic evidence of population imbalance between As-$4p_{x}$ and $4p_{y}$ orbitals, which reaches $|n_x-n_y|/|n_x+n_y| \sim 15$\% at $T\rightarrow T_{\rm S}$…
Using high resolution X-Ray diffraction (XRD) on high purity powders, we resolved the structure and $ab$ symmetry of the intriguing compound \svo$ $ from room temperature down to 20 K to an unprecedented level of accuracy. Upon cooling, this new set of data unambiguously reveals a second order phase transition lowering the symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic at a temperature $T_{c2}=136$ K. The observation of an orthorhombic distortion of the $ab$-plane is attributed to nematic phase formation supported by local Jahn-Teller (JT) dynamical instability. At $T_{N}=105$ K, spins order and at …
Motivated by the recent low-tempearture experiments on bulk FeSe, we study the electron correlation effects in a multiorbital model for this compound in the nematic phase using the U(1) slave-spin theory. We find that a finite nematic order helps to stabilize an orbital selective Mott phase. Moreover, we propose that when the d- and s-wave bond nematic orders are combined with the ferro-orbital order, there exists a surprisingly large orbital selectivity between the xz and yz orbitals even though the associated band splitting is relatively small. Our results explain the seemingly unusual obser…
NiGa$_2$S$_4$ is a triangular lattice S=1 system with strong two-dimensionality of the lattice, actively discussed as a candidate to host spin-nematic order brought about by strong quadrupole coupling. Using Raman scattering spectroscopy we identify a phonon of E$_g$ symmetry which can modulate magnetic exchange $J_1$ and produce quadrupole coupling. Additionally, our Raman scattering results demonstrate a loss of local inversion symmetry on cooling, which we associate with sulfur vacancies. This will lead to disordered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which can prevent long range magnetic …
Motivated by the nematic electronic fluid phase in Sr_{3}Ru_{2}O_{7}, we develop a combined scheme of the renormalization-group method and the random-phase-approximation-type method, and analyze orbital susceptibilities of the (d_{xz},d_{yz})-orbital Hubbard model with high accuracy. It is confirmed that the present model exhibits a ferro-orbital instability near the magnetic or superconducting quantum criticality, due to the Aslamazov-Larkin-type vertex corrections. This mechanism of orbital nematic order presents a natural explanation for the nematic order in Sr_{3}Ru_{2}O_{7}, and is expect…
To reveal the origin of the "nematic electronic fluid phase" in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, we apply the self-consistent vertex correction analysis to the ($d_{xz},d_{yz}$)-orbital Hubbard model. It is found that the Aslamazov-Larkin type vertex correction causes the strong coupling between spin and orbital fluctuations, which corresponds to the Kugel-Khomskii spin-orbital coupling in the local picture. Due to this mechanism, orbital nematic order with $C_2$ symmetry is induced by the magnetic quantum criticality in multiorbital systems, while this mechanism is ignored in the random-phase-approximation…
Nematic order resulting from the partial melting of density-waves has been proposed as the mechanism to explain nematicity in iron-based superconductors. An outstanding question, however, is whether the microscopic electronic model for these systems -- the multi-orbital Hubbard model -- displays such an ordered state as its leading instability. In contrast to usual electronic instabilities, such as magnetic and charge order, this fluctuation-driven phenomenon cannot be captured by the standard RPA method. Here, by including fluctuations beyond RPA in the multi-orbital Hubbard model, we derive …
We consider a series of Mott insulators in unit of two orbitals each hosting spin-1/2 electron, and by pairing two spin-1/2 into spin-1 triplet, derive the effective exchange interaction between the adjacent units via fourth order perturbation theory. It turns out that the biquadratic exchange interaction between spin-1, which is one of the origins of the nematic order, arises only in processes where the four different electrons exchange cyclically along the twisted loop, which we call "twisted ring exchange" processes. We show that the term becomes the same order with the Heisenberg exchange …
Motivated by the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on FeSe and iron pnictide families of iron-based superconductors, we have studied the orbital nematic order and its interplay with antiferromagnetism within the two-orbital Hubbard model. We used random phase approximation (RPA) to calculate the dependence of the orbital and magnetic susceptibilities on the strength of interactions and electron density (doping). To account for strong electron correlations not captured by RPA, we further employed non-perturbative variational cluster approximation (VCA) capable of capturin…
To understand the interplay between nematic fluctuation and superconductivity in iron-based superconductors, we performed a systematic study of the realistic two-orbital Hubbard model by using the constrained-path quantum Monte Carlo method. Our numerical results showed that the on-site nematic interaction induces a strong enhancement of nematic fluctuations at various momentums, especially at ($π$,$π$). Simultaneously, it was found that the on-site nematic interaction suppresses the ($π$,0)/(0,$π$) antiferromagnetic order and long-range electron pairing correlations for dominant pairing chann…
To understand the nematicity in Fe-based superconductors, nontrivial $k$-dependence of the orbital polarization ($ΔE_{xz}(k)$, $ΔE_{yz}(k)$) in the nematic phase, such as the sign reversal of the orbital splitting between $Γ$- and X,Y-points in FeSe, provides significant information. To solve this problem, we study the spontaneous symmetry breaking with respect to the orbital polarization and spin susceptibility self-consistently. In FeSe, due to the sign-reversing orbital order, the hole- and electron-pockets are elongated along the $k_y$- and $k_x$-axes respectively, consistently with experi…
An electronic nematic phase can be classified by a spontaneously broken discrete rotational symmetry of a host lattice. In a square lattice, there are two distinct nematic phases. The parallel nematic phase breaks $x$ and $y$ symmetry, while the diagonal nematic phase breaks the diagonal $(x+y)$ and anti-diagonal $(x-y)$ symmetry. We investigate the interplay between the parallel and diagonal nematic orders using mean field theory. We found that the nematic phases compete with each other, while they coexist in a finite window of parameter space. The quantum critical point between the diagonal …
The electronic nematic state without magnetization emerges in various strongly correlated metals such as Fe-based and cuprate superconductors. To understand this universal phenomenon, we focus on the nematic state in Ti-oxypnictide BaTi2(As,Sb)2O, which is expressed as the three-dimensional 10-orbital Hubbard model. The antiferromagnetic fluctuations are caused by the Fermi surface nesting. Interestingly, we find the spin-fluctuation-driven orbital order due to the strong orbital-spin interference, which is described by the Aslamazov-Larkin vertex correction (AL-VC). The predicted intra-unit-c…
We calculated the polarization-dependent Raman scattering cross section spectra of LaMnO3 below the A-type magnetic ordering temperature. Two strong peaks appear around the MnO6 octahedra stretching phonon frequency. One mode shows Ag symmetry, while the other mode shows Bg symmetry. We found that the Ag symmetry peak is a Jahn-Teller phonon coupled to the orbital wave and the Bg symmetry peak is an orbital wave coupled to a Q2 phonon mode via the Jahn-Teller electron phonon coupling.
The nematic state of the iron-based superconductors is studied in the undoped limit of the three-orbital ($xz$, $yz$, $xy$) spin-fermion model via the introduction of lattice degrees of freedom. Monte Carlo simulations show that in order to stabilize the experimentally observed lattice distortion and nematic order, and to reproduce photoemission experiments, {\it both} the spin-lattice and orbital-lattice couplings are needed. The interplay between their respective coupling strengths regulates the separation between the structural and Néel transition temperatures. Experimental results for the …
Iron telluride FeTe is known to display bicollinear magnetic order at low temperatures together with a monoclinic lattice distortion. Because the bicollinear order can involve two different wavevectors $(π/2,π/2)$ and $(π/2,-π/2)$, symmetry considerations allow for the possible stabilization of a nematic state with short-range bicollinear order coupled to monoclinic lattice distortions at a $T_S$ higher than the temperature $T_N$ where long-range bicollinear order fully develops. As a concrete example, the three-orbitals spin-fermion model for iron telluride is studied with an additional coupl…
We present two different theories for Raman scattering and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) in the low temperature ferromagnetic phase of YTiO$_3$ and compare this to the available experimental data. For description of the orbital ground-state and orbital excitations, we consider two models corresponding to two theoretical limits: one where the $t_{2g}$ orbitals are degenerate, and the other where strong lattice distortions split them. In the former model the orbitals interact through superexchange. The resulting superexchange Hamiltonian yields an orbitally ordered ground state with…
Motivated by recent observation of nematicity in Moiré systems, we study three different orbital orders that potentially can happen in Moiré systems: (1) the nematic order; (2) the valley polarization; and (3) the "compass order". Each order parameter spontaneously breaks part of the spatial symmetries of the system. We explore physics caused by the quantum fluctuations close to the order-disorder transition of these order parameters. Especially, we recognize that the symmetry of the Moiré systems leads to a crucial difference of the effective theory describing the nematic order from the stand…
We report the evolution of nematic fluctuations in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ single crystals as a function of Sulfur content $x$ across the nematic quantum critical point (QCP) $x_c\sim$ 0.17 via Raman scattering. The Raman spectra in the $B_{1g}$ nematic channel consist of two components, but only the low energy one displays clear fingerprints of critical behavior and is attributed to itinerant carriers. Curie-Weiss analysis of the associated nematic susceptibility indicates a substantial effect of nemato-elastic coupling which shifts the location of the nematic QCP. We argue that this lattice-induce…
Recent experiments suggest that besides of antiferromagnetic fluctuations nematic fluctuations may contribute to the occurrence of superconductivity in iron pnictides. Motivated by this observation we study superconductivity from nematic fluctuations in a minimal two-band model. The employed band parameters are appropriate for iron pnictides and lead to four pockets for the Fermi line. It is shown that low-energy, long-wavelength nematic fluctuations within the pockets give rise to strong-coupling superconductivity whereas the large momenta density fluctuations between pockets are rather irrel…
The electronic nematic responses in Fe-based superconductors have been observed ubiquitously in various experimental probes. One novel nematic character is the d-wave {\it bond} orbital-relevant nematic charge order which was firstly proposed by symmetry analysis and then conformed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In this paper, we present a mechanism that the driving force of the orbital-relevant nematic charge order is the reduction of the large Hubbard energy in the particle-hole charge channel by virtual hopping processes. This is one scenario from strong-coupling consideratio…
The interplay between electronic orders and superconductivity is central to the physics of unconventional superconductors, and is particularly pronounced in the iron-based superconductors. Motivated by recent experiments on FeSe, we study the superconducting pairing in its nematic phase in a multiorbital model with frustrated spin-exchange interactions. The electron correlations in the presence of the nematic order give rise to an enhanced orbital selectivity in the superconducting pairing amplitudes. This orbital-selective pairing produces a large gap anisotropy on the Fermi surface. Our resu…
A very fundamental and unconventional characteristic of superconductivity in iron-based materials is that it occurs in the vicinity of {\it two} other instabilities. Apart from a tendency towards magnetic order, these Fe-based systems have a propensity for nematic ordering: a lowering of the rotational symmetry while time-reversal invariance is preserved. Setting the stage for superconductivity, it is heavily debated whether the nematic symmetry breaking is driven by lattice, orbital or spin degrees of freedom. Here we report a very clear splitting of NMR resonance lines in FeSe at $T_{nem}$ =…
The electric field gradient (EFG) tensor at the $^{75}$As site couples to the orbital occupations of the As p-orbitals and is a sensitive probe of local nematicity in BaFe$_2$As$_2$. We use nuclear magnetic resonance to measure the nuclear quadrupolar splittings and find that the EFG asymmetry responds linearly to the presence of a strain field in the paramagnetic phase. We extract the nematic susceptibility from the slope of this linear response as a function of temperature and find that it diverges near the structural transition in agreement with other measures of the bulk nematic susceptibi…
The importance of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect in Fe-based superconductors (FeSCs) has recently been under hot debate. Considering the Hund's coupling-induced electronic correlation, the understanding of the role of SOC in FeSCs is not trivial and is still elusive. Here, through a comprehensive study of 77Se and 57Fe nuclear magnetic resonance, a nontrivial SOC effect is revealed in the nematic state of FeSe. First, the orbital-dependent spin susceptibility, determined by the anisotropy of the 57Fe Knight shift, indicates a predominant role from the 3dxy orbital, which suggests the coe…
The large anisotropy in the electronic properties across a structural transition in several correlated systems has been identified as the key manifestation of electronic nematic order, breaking rotational symmetry. In this context, FeSe is attracting tremendous interest, since electronic nematicity develops over a wide range of temperatures, allowing accurate experimental investigation. Here we combine angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical calculations based on a realistic multi-orbital model to unveil the microscopic mechanism responsible for the evolution of the electroni…

Nematic fluctuations occur in a wide range of physical systems from liquid crystals to biological molecules to solids such as exotic magnets, cuprates and iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductors. Nematic fluctuations are thought to be closely linked to the formation of Cooper-pairs in iron-based superconductors. It is unclear whether the anisotropy inherent in this nematicity arises from electronic spin or orbital degrees of freedom. We have studied the iron-based Mott insulators La$_{2}$O$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$O$M$$_{2}$ $M$ = (S, Se) which are structurally similar to the iron pnictide superconductors. …
Starting from a microscopic itinerant model, we derive and analyze the effective low-energy model for collective magnetic excitations in the iron pnictides. We show that the stripe magnetic order is generally preempted by an Ising-nematic order which breaks $C_{4}$ lattice symmetry but preserves O(3) spin-rotational symmetry. This leads to a rich phase diagram as function of doping, pressure, and elastic moduli, displaying split magnetic and nematic tri-critical points. The nematic transition may instantly bring the system to the verge of a magnetic transition, or it may occur first, being fol…
We propose that impurity-induced electronic nematic state is realized above the orthorhombic structure transition temperature $T_S$ in iron-pnictide superconductors. In the presence of strong orbital fluctuations near $T_S$, it is theoretically revealed that a single impurity induces non-local orbital order with $C_2$-symmetry, consistently with recent STM/STS measurements. Each impurity-induced $C_2$ orbital order aligns along a-axis by applying tiny uniaxial pressure along b-axis. In this impurity-induced nematic phase, the resistivity shows sizable in-plane anisotropy ($ρ_b/ρ_a \sim 2$) eve…
In copper-oxide and iron-based high temperature (high-$T_{\rm c}$) superconductors, many physical properties exhibit in-plane anisotropy, which is believed to be caused by a rotational symmetry-breaking nematic order, whose origin and its relationship to superconductivity remain elusive. In many iron-pnictides, a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$ coincides with the magnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm N}$, making the orbital and spin degrees of freedom highly entangled. NaFeAs is a system where $T_{\rm s}$ = 54 K is well separated from $T_{\rm N}$ = 42…
The main features in iron-based superconductors would be (i) the orthorhombic transition accompanied by remarkable softening of shear modulus, (ii) high-Tc superconductivity close to the orthorhombic phase, and (iii) nematic transition in the tetragonal phase. In this paper, we present a unified explanation for them, based on the orbital fluctuation theory, considering both the e-ph and the Coulomb interaction. It is found that a small e-ph coupling constant ($λ~ 0.2$) is enough to produce large orbital (=charge quadrupole $O_{xz/yz}$) fluctuations, which causes the s-wave superconductivity wi…
Giant softening by 30 cm$^{-1}$ of the 490- and 620-cm$^{-1}$ modes is observed by Raman scattering measurements below the Curie temperature of single crystalline LaMnO$_{3+δ}$ ($0.085\leq δ\leq0.125$). A pseudogap-like electronic continuum and a Fano antiresonance at 144 cm$^{-1}$ appear below the charge ordering temperature. This gives evidence for the presence of an orbital fluctuating state and the formation of a hole stripe, respectively. This is further corroborated by a unstructured broadening and shifting of multiphonon features with increasing doping $δ$. Our study suggests the signif…

In strongly correlated multi-orbital systems, various ordered phases appear. In particular, the orbital order in iron-based superconductors attracts much attention since it is considered to be the origin of the nematic state. In order to clarify the essential condition for realizing orbital orders, we study simple two-orbital ($d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$) Hubbard model. We find that the orbital order, which corresponds to the nematic order, appears due to the vertex corrections even in the two-orbital model. Thus, $d_{xy}$ orbital is not essential to realize the nematic orbital order. The obtained orbi…
