We present two different theories for Raman scattering and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) in the low temperature ferromagnetic phase of YTiO$_3$ and compare this to the available experimental data. For description of the orbital ground-state and orbital excitations, we consider two models corresponding to two theoretical limits: one where the $t_{2g}$ orbitals are degenerate, and the other where strong lattice distortions split them. In the former model the orbitals interact through superexchange. The resulting superexchange Hamiltonian yields an orbitally ordered ground state with collective orbital excitations on top of it - the orbitons. In the orbital-lattice model, on the other hand, distortions lead to local dd-transitions between crystal field levels. Correspondingly, the orbital response functions that determine Raman and RIXS lineshapes and intensities are of cooperative or single-ion character. We find that the superexchange model yields theoretical Raman and RIXS spectra that fit very well to the experimental data.
The origin of the low-temperature ferromagnetic instability in YTiO3 driven by the interplay between lattice, orbital, spin, and charge degrees of freedom is on the background of lattice dynamics. We present a comprehensive study of temperature-dependent polarized Raman scattering in a nearly stoichiometric orthorhombic YTiO3 single crystal. The lattice-dynamics calculations authenticate the assignment for the observed Ag- and B2g-symmetry modes in terms of the atoms vibrational patterns. The obtained results suggest that trigonal GdFeO3-type distortions become unstable against tetragonal Jahn…
Raman scattering is used to observe pronounced electronic excitations around 230 meV - well above the two-phonon range - in the Mott insulators LaTiO$_3$ and YTiO$_3$. Based on the temperature, polarization, and photon energy dependence, the modes are identified as orbital excitations. The observed profiles bear a striking resemblance to magnetic Raman modes in the insulating parent compounds of the superconducting cuprates, indicating an unanticipated universality of the electronic excitations in transition metal oxides.
Nonresonant inelastic light and X-ray scattering is investigated for the spinless Falicov-Kimball model on an infinite-dimensional hypercubic lattice with a charge-density-wave phase at half filling. The many-body density of states (DOS) is found for different values of the Coulomb repulsion $U$, ranging from a dirty metal to a Mott insulator. At zero temperature, the charge gap is exactly equal to $U$; increasing the temperature rapidly fills the gap with subgap states. The nonresonant response function for Raman and inelastic X-ray scattering shows peaks connected with transitions over the g…
We present a new mechanism for Raman scattering of phonons, which is based on the linear magnetoelastic coupling present in non-Kramers magnetic ions. This provides a direct coupling of Raman-active phonons to the magnet's quasiparticles. We propose to use this mechanism to probe the emergent magnetic monopoles, electric charges, and photons of the emergent quantum electrodynamics (eQED) of the U(1) quantum spin liquid known as quantum spin ice. Detecting this eQED in candidate rare-earth pyrochlore materials, or indeed signatures of topological magnetic phases more generally, is a challenging…
High-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering has been used to determine the momentum dependence of orbital excitations in Mott-insulating LaTiO$_3$ and YTiO$_3$ over a wide range of the Brillouin zone. The data are compared to calculations in the framework of lattice-driven and superexchange-driven orbital ordering models. A superexchange model in which the experimentally observed modes are attributed to two-orbiton excitations yields the best description of the data.
Projective symmetry groups are applied to Raman observations of the Kitaev quantum spin liquids in spherical lattice geometries realized by Platonic and Archimedean polyhedra. Parton single excitations in Kitaev spin polyhedra are characterized by double-valued irreducible representations of their belonging projective symmetry groups, whereas parton geminate excitations relevant to Raman scattering are decomposed into single-valued irreducible representations of the corresponding point symmetry groups. We combine a standard point-symmetry-group analysis of the Loudon-Fleury vertices and an ela…
We develop a theory of the dynamical response of a minimal model of quantum spin ice (QSI) by means of inelastic light scattering. In particular, we are interested in the Raman response of the fractionalized U(1) spin liquid realized in the XXZ QSI. We show that the low-energy Raman intensity is dominated by spinon and gauge fluctuations. We find that the Raman response in the QSI state of that model appears only in the $T_{2g}$ polarization channel. We show that the Raman intensity profile displays a broad continuum from the spinons and coupled spinon and gauge fluctuations, and a low-energy …
Pressure-dependent, low temperature inelastic light (Raman) scattering measurements of KCuF$_3$ show that applied pressure above $P^{*} \sim$ 7 kbar suppresses a previously observed structural phase transition temperature to zero temperature in KCuF$_3$, resulting in the development of a $ω\sim$ 0 fluctuational (quasielastic) response near $T \sim$ 0 K. This pressure-induced fluctuational response --- which we associate with slow fluctuations of the CuF$_6$ octahedral orientation --- is temperature independent and exhibits a characteristic fluctuation rate that is much larger than the temperat…
We report on a study of the inelastic scattering properties of (001) and (111) Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ single crystals at room temperature. Structural and compositional analysis along with absorption measurement confirms single crystalline phase of all samples. Room temperature polarized Raman measurements were performed on crystals in non-resonant and two different resonant conditions by using six different laser excitation lines. Lorentzian model fitting analysis is performed on all measured spectra in order to identify the difference in the Raman scattering cross-section in resonant and non-reson…
We present calculations of the intensity of polariton-mediated inelastic light scattering in semiconductor microcavities within a Green's function framework. In addition to reproducing the strong coupling of light and matter, this method also enables the inclusion of damping mechanisms in a consistent way. Our results show excellent agreement with recent Raman scattering experiments.
We present a comprehensive study of the temperature and doping dependence of the 500 meV peak observed at ${\bf q}=(π,0)$ in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments on $\rm La_2CuO_4$. The intensity of this peak persists above the Néel temperature (T$_{N}$=320 K), but decreases gradually with increasing temperature, reaching zero at around T=500 K. The peak energy decreases with temperature in close quantitative accord with the behavior of the two-magnon $\rm B_{1g}$ Raman peak in $\rm La_2CuO_4$, and with suitable rescaling, agrees with the Raman peak shifts in $\rm EuBa_2Cu_3O…
We theoretically investigate the incident-photon energy omega_i dependence of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) tuned for the Cu L edge in cuprate superconductors by using the exact diagonalization technique for a single-band Hubbard model. Depending on the value of core-hole Coulomb interaction in the intermediate state, RIXS for non-spin-flip channel shows either a omega_i-dependent fluorescencelike or omega_i-independent Raman-like behavior for hole doping. An analysis of x-ray absorption suggests that the core-hole Coulomb interaction is larger than on-site Coulomb interaction in …
Magnetic Raman scattering from a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg-chain is considered with a focus on the uniform phase of the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO_3. The Raman intensity is analyzed in terms of a Loudon-Fleury scattering process using a spinless-fermion mean-field theory developed for the frustrated spin-chain. A comparison to experimental data is presented and the frustration and temperature dependence is studied. In good agreement with observed spectra a broad inelastic four-spinon continuum is found at low temperatures above the spin-Peierls transition. At high temperatures the intens…
We present a polarization-resolved, high-resolution Raman scattering study of the three consecutive charge density wave (CDW) regimes in $1T$-TaS$_2$ single crystals, supported by \textit{ab initio} calculations. Our analysis of the spectra within the low-temperature commensurate (C-CDW) regime shows $\mathrm{P3}$ symmetry of the system, thus excluding the previously proposed triclinic stacking of the "star-of-David" structure, and promoting trigonal or hexagonal stacking instead. The spectra of the high-temperature incommensurate (IC-CDW) phase directly project the phonon density of states du…
Calculations are presented for electronic Raman scattering and infrared conductivity in a $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ superconductor including the effects of elastic scattering via anisotropic impurities and inelastic spin-fluctuation scattering. A consistent description of experiments on optimally doped Bi-2212 is made possible by considering the effects of correlations on both inelastic and elastic scattering.
We present a theory of the collective orbital excitation termed orbital wave in perovskite titanates and vanadates with the triply degenerate $t_{2g}$ orbitals. The dispersion relations of the orbital waves for the orbital ordered LaVO$_3$, YVO$_3$ and YTiO$_3$ are examined in the effective spin-orbital coupled Hamiltonians associated with the Jahn-Teller type couplings. We propose possible scattering processes for the Raman and inelastic neutron scatterings from the orbital wave and calculate the scattering spectra for titanates and vanadates. It is found that both the excitation spectra and …
We demonstrate the utility of point group representation theory for symmetry analysis in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. From its polarization-dependence, we show that a 5 eV inelastic feature in Sr2CuO2Cl2 has pure B1g symmetry and assign it to a transition in the cell-perturbation calculations of Simon, et. al. [Phys. Rev. B., 54, R3780 (1996)]. We discuss how Raman selection rules are broken at nonzero momentum transfer and how this can also act as a probe of wave function symmetry.
Motivated by the lack of an obvious spectroscopic probe to investigate non-conventional order such as quadrupolar orders in spin S>1/2 systems, we present a theoretical approach to inelastic light scattering for spin-1 quantum magnets in the context of a two-band Hubbard model. In contrast to the S=1/2 case, where the only type of local excited state is a doubly occupied state of energy $U$, several local excited states with occupation up to 4 electrons are present. As a consequence, we show that two distinct resonating scattering regimes can be accessed depending on the incident photon energy…
The scattering cross section of the resonant inelastic light scattering is represented as a correlation function in the Keldysh-Schwinger functional integral formalism. The functional integral approach enables us to compute the cross section in the Feynman diagram perturbation theory where many-body effects can be fully incorporated. This approach is applied to the one G-phonon Raman scattering of graphene, and the result is shown to agree with the one previously obtained by the conventional Fermi golden rule formula. Also, this approach is generalized to the systems in non-equilibrium conditi…
The transition metal chalcogenide Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ undergoes a second-order phase transition at $T_c=328$ K involving a small lattice distortion. Below $T_c$, a band gap at the center of its Brillouin zone increases up to about 0.35 eV. In this work, we study the electronic structure of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ in its low-temperature semiconducting phase, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni $L_3$-edge. In addition to a weak fluorescence response, we observe a collection of intense Raman-like peaks that we attribute to electron-hole excitations. Using density functional theory calcul…
We propose an effective model to describe the $A_{2g}$ signal in Raman scattering experiments in the URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ compound. We follow the scheme proposed earlier by Khveshchenko and Wiegmann [Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 500 (1994)] to calculate the $A_{2g}$ scattering vertex. We extract the imaginary part of a two-point current-current correlation function and compare it directly with the Raman response. We obtain an inelastic peak at $A_{2g}$ channel owing to the interplay between a local staggered ordering and a possible quantum spin liquid behavior. Our results offer an explanation for the el…
Inelastic light scattering from electrons is a symmetry-selective probe of the charge dynamics within correlated materials. Many measurements have been made on correlated insulators, and recent exact solutions in large dimensions explain a number of anomalous features found in experiments. Here we focus on the correlated metal, as described by the Hubbard model away from half filling. We can determine the B1g Raman response and the inelastic X-ray scattering along the Brillouin zone diagonal exactly in the large dimensional limit. We find a number of interesting features in the light scatterin…
Perfect deporalization of the Loudon-Fleury inelastic visible-light scattering in the Kitaev honeycomb model is well known. Though it happens in Heisenberg Kagome and triangular antiferromagnets as well, yet we prove it to be of geometric origin rather than peculiar to quantum spin liquids. A Kitaev spin liquid in the square planar geometry indeed exhibits polarized Raman spectra containing defferent symmetry species, each brought by symmetry-compatible spinon geminate excitations, i.e. arising from symmetry-compatible direct-product representations made of double-valued irreducible representa…
We present a theoretical investigation of the origin of Raman-like and fluorescencelike (FL) features of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra. Using a combination of local-density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory and a configuration interaction solver for Anderson impurity model, we calculate the $L$-edge RIXS and x-ray absorption spectra of high-valence transition-metal oxides LaCuO$_3$ and NaCuO$_2$. We analyze in detail the behavior of the FL feature and show how it is connected to the details of electronic and crystal structure. On the studied compounds we demonstr…
We calculate the non-resonant Raman response, the single particle spectra and the charge-spin configuration for the electron doped $t-t'$ Hubbard model using unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations. We discuss the similarities and differences in the response of homogeneous versus inhomogeneous structures. Metallic antiferromagnetism dominates in a large region of the $U-n$ phase diagram but at high values of the on-site interaction and for intermediate doping values, inhomogeneous configurations are found with lower energy. This result is in contrast with the case of hole doped cuprates where i…
Inelastic low-energy Raman and high-energy X-ray scatterings have made great progress in instrumentation to investigate the strong electronic correlations in matter. However, theoretical study of the relevant scattering spectrum is still a challenge. In this article, we present a Schwinger-Keldysh canonical perturbation formalism for the electronic Raman scattering, where all the resonant, non-resonant and mixed responses are considered uniformly. We show how to use this formalism to evaluate the cross section of the electronic Raman scattering off an one-band superconductor. All the two-photo…
We report an inelastic light scattering study of the effects of charge-ordering on the spin-, charge-, and lattice-dynamics in ${\rm Bi}_{1-x}{\rm Ca}_{x}{\rm MnO}_3$ $(x>0.5)$. We find that charge-ordering results in anomalous phonon behavior, such as the appearance of `activated' modes. More significantly, however, the transition to the CO phase results in the appearance of a quasielastic scattering response with the symmetry of the spin chirality operator ($T_{1g}$); this scattering response is thus indicative of magnetic or chiral spin fluctuations in the AFM charge-ordered phase.
We study the inelastic light scattering response in two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Kitaev spin-liquid models with \ms band structures in the symmetry classes BDI and D leading to protected gapless surface modes. We present a detailed calculation of the resonant Raman/Brillouin scattering vertex relevant to iridate and ruthenate compounds whose low-energy physics is believed to be proximate to these spin-liquid phases. In the symmetry class BDI, we find that while the resonant scattering on thin films can detect the gapless boundary modes of spin liquids, the non-resonant processes do not…
We investigate the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-$\text{Li}_2\text{IrO}_3$ by means of inelastic Raman scattering. The spectra exhibits a coexistence of a broad scattering continuum and two sharp low-energy peaks at 2.5 meV and 3 meV, with a distinctive polarization dependence. While the continuum is suggestive of fractional quasi-particles emerging from a proximate quantum spin liquid phase, the sharp peaks provide the first experimental signature of the `non-Loudon-Fleury' one-magnon scattering processes proposed recently [Phys. Rev. B 104, 144412 (2021)]. The …
Inelastic light scattering is an intensively used tool in the study of electronic properties of solids. Triggered by the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in the cuprates and by new developments in instrumentation, light scattering both in the visible (Raman effect) and the X-ray part of the electromagnetic spectrum has become a method complementary to optical (infrared) spectroscopy while providing additional and relevant information. The main purpose of the review is to position Raman scattering with regard to single-particle methods like angle-resolved photoemission spectrosco…
Raman scattering studies of the frustrated spin chain system LiCu$_{2}$O$_{2}$ are reported. Two transitions into a magnetically ordered phase (taken place at temperatures $\sim$ 9 K and $\sim$ 24 K) have been confirmed from the analysis of optical properties of the samples. Interestingly, two different magnetic excitations, seen at 100 and 110 cm$^{-1}$ in the magnetically ordered phase superimpose each other independently, indicating a coherent coexistence of long-range magnetic order and dimerization. The observed phenomenon is attributed to magnetostructural peculiarities of LiCu$_{2}$O$_{…
We studied the intensity of resonant Raman scattering due to optical phonons in a planar II-VI-type semiconductor microcavity in the regime of strong coupling between light and matter. Two different sets of independent experiments were performed at near outgoing resonance with the middle polariton (MP)branch of the cavity. In the first, the Stokes-shifted photons were kept at exact resonance with the MP, varying the photonic or excitonic character of the polariton. In the second, only the incoming light wavelength was varied, and the resonant profile of the inelastic scattered intensity was st…
We have investigated the phonon and the magnetic excitations in LaCoO3 by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The acoustic phonon dispersions show some characteristic features of the folded Brillouin zone (BZ) for the rhombohedrally distorted perovskite structure containing two chemical formula units of LaCoO3 in the unit cell. We observed two transverse optical (TO) phonon branches along (delta, delta, delta), consistent with previously reported Raman active Eg modes which show remarkable softening associated with the spin-state transition [Ishikawa et al., (Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) …
Spontaneous and stimulated resonant inelastic X-ray Raman scattering signals are calculated using the Keldysh-Schwinger closed-time path loop and expressed as overlaps of Doorway and Window electron-hole wavepackets. These are recast in terms of the one-particle Green's functions and expansion coefficients of configuration interaction singles for valence excitations, which can be obtained from standard electronic structure codes. Calculation for many-body states of ground and core-excited system is avoided.
We develop a generic theory for the resonant inelastic light (Raman) scattering by a conduction band quantum plasma taking into account the presence of the filled valence band in doped semiconductor nanostructures within a generalized resonant random phase approximation (RPA). Our generalized RPA theory explicitly incorporates the two-step resonance process where an electron from the filled valence band is first excited by the incident photon into the conduction band before an electron from the conduction band falls back into the valence band emitting the scattered photon. We show that when th…
We present inelastic light scattering measurements of EuO and Eu$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$B$_6$ ($x$=0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.03, and 0.05) as functions of doping, B isotope, magnetic field, and temperature. Our results reveal a variety of distinct regimes as a function of decreasing T: (a) a paramagnetic semimetal regime, which is characterized by a collision-dominated electronic scattering response whose scattering rate $Γ$ decreases with decreasing temperature; (b) a spin-disorder scattering regime, which is characterized by a collision-dominated electronic scattering response whose scattering rate $Γ$ scal…
Superconductivity evolves as functions of pressure or doping from charge-ordered phases in a variety of strongly correlated systems, suggesting that there may be universal characteristics associated with the competition between superconductivity and charge order in these materials. We present an inelastic light (Raman) scattering study of the structural changes that precede the pressure-tuned charge-density-wave (CDW) to superconductor transition in one such system, ZrTe3. In certain phonon bands, we observe dramatic linewidth reductions that accompany CDW formation, indicating that these phon…
We calculate the intensity of the polariton mediated inelastic light scattering in semiconductor microcavities. We treat the exciton-photon coupling nonperturbatively and incorporate lifetime effects in both excitons and photons, and a coupling of the photons to the electron-hole continuum. Taking the matrix elements as fitting parameters, the results are in excellent agreement with measured Raman intensities due to optical phonons resonant with the upper polariton branches in II-VI microcavities with embedded CdTe quantum wells.
We consider the question of whether resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) can be used to detect many-body excitations that are coupled to the spin-chirality terms S_i . (S_j x S_k) in a Mott insulator. We find that while the spin-chirality terms are in general absent in the usual experimental setups of RIXS, there are prospects of realizing such terms if one considers instead the scattering near a pre-edge. We then perform detailed analyses for the square and the kagome lattices, and brief analyses for the triangular and the honeycomb lattices, in which we show that the spin-chirality ter…
We report an investigation of the lattice dynamical properties of LiFeAs using inelastic light scattering. Five out of the six expected phonon modes are observed. The temperature evolution of their frequencies and linewidths is in good agreement with an anharmonic-decay model. We find no evidence for substantial electron-phonon coupling, and no superconductivity-induced phonon anomalies.
A major focus of experimental interest in Sr2IrO4 has been to clarify how the magnetic excitations of this strongly spin-orbit coupled system differ from the predictions of anisotropic 2D spin-1/2 Heisenberg model and to explore the extent to which strong spin-orbit coupling affects the magnetic properties of iridates. Here, we present a high-resolution inelastic light (Raman) scattering study of the low energy magnetic excitation spectrum of Sr2IrO4 and doped Eu-doped Sr2IrO4 as functions of both temperature and applied magnetic field. We show that the high-field (H>1.5 T) in-plane spin dynam…

The ferrimagnetic spinels MnB2O4 (B = Mn,V) exhibit a similar series of closely spaced magnetic and structural phase transitions at low temperatures, reflecting both magnetic frustration and a strong coupling between the spin and lattice degrees of freedom. Careful studies of excitations in MnB2O4 (B = Mn,V), and the evolution of these excitations with temperature, are important for obtaining a microscopic description of the role that magnetic excitations and spin-lattice coupling play in the low temperature phase transitions of these materials. We report an inelastic light (Raman) scattering …
We present a detailed analysis of resonant inelastic scattering (RIXS) from Fe$_{1.087}$Te with unprecedented energy resolution. In contrast to the sharp peaks typically seen in insulating systems at the transition metal $L_3$ edge, we observe spectra which show different characteristic features. For low energy transfer, we experimentally observe theoretically predicted many-body effects of resonant Raman scattering from a non-interacting gas of fermions. Furthermore, we find that limitations to this many-body electron-only theory are realized at high Raman shift, where an exponential lineshap…
Clusters of single spins form the relevant spin entities in the formation of long-range magnetic order in spin cluster Mott insulators. Such type of spin order bears resemblance to molecular crystals, and we therefore may expect a prototypical spin wave spectrum which can be divided into low-energy external and high-energy internal cluster spin wave modes. Here, we study high-energy spin cluster excitations in the spin cluster Mott insulator Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ by means of spontaneous Raman scattering. Multiple high-energy optical magnon modes are observed, of which the Raman-activity is shown …
We use dynamical mean field theory to find an exact solution for inelastic light scattering in strongly correlated materials such as those near a quantum-critical metal-insulator transition. We evaluate the results for $\textbf{q}=0$ (Raman) scattering and find that resonant effects can be quite large, and yield a triple resonance, a significant enhancement of nonresonant scattering peaks, a joint resonance of both peaks when the incident photon frequency is on the order of $U$, and the appearance of an isosbestic point in all symmetry channels for an intermediate range of incident photon freq…
We report low energy electronic Raman scattering from Ni-substituted YBa2Cu3O6.95 single crystals with Tc ranging from 92.5 K to 78 K. The fully symmetrical A1g channel and the B1g channel which is sensitive to the dx2-y2 gap maximum have been explored. The energy of the B1g pair-breaking peak remains constant under Ni doping while the energy of the A1g peak scales with Tc (EA1g/Tc=5). Our data show that the A1g peak tracks the magnetic resonance peak observed in inelastic neutron scattering yielding a key explanation to the long-standing problem of the origin the A1g peak.
A consistent description of low-energy charge and spin responses of the insulating Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 lamellar system is found in the framework of a one-band Hubbard model which besides $U$ includes hoppings up to 3^{rd} nearest-neighbors. By combining mean-field calculations, exact diagonalization (ED) results, and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations (QMC), we analyze both charge and spin degrees of freedom responses as observed by optical conductivity, ARPES, Raman and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Within this effective model, long-range hopping processes flatten the quasiparticle band ar…
The competition of charge, orbital, and ferromagnetic interactions in layered manganites is investigated by magneto-Raman scattering spectroscopy. We find that the colossal magnetoresistance effect in the layered compounds results from the interplay of the orbital and ferromagnetic double-exchange correlations. Inelastic scattering by charge-order fluctuations dominates the quasiparticle dynamics in the ferromagnetic-metal state. The scattering is suppressed at low frequencies, consistent with the opening of a charge-density wave pseudogap.
Inelastic light scattering spectra of several members of the RFe3(BO3)4 family reveal a cascade of phase transitions as a function of temperature, starting with a structural, weakly first order, phase transition followed by two magnetic phase transitions. Those consist of the ordering of the Fe-spin sublattice revealed by all the compound, and a subsequent spin-reorientational transition for GdFe3(BO3)4. The Raman data evidence a strong coupling between the lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom in these borates. The Fe-sublattice ordering leads to a strong suppression of the low energy magne…
We use inelastic light scattering to study Sr$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($x\approx0.34$), which exhibits a robust tetragonal magnetic phase that restores the four-fold rotation symmetry inside the orthorhombic magnetic phase. With cooling, we observe splitting and recombination of an $E_g$ phonon peak upon entering the orthorhombic and tetragonal magnetic phases, respectively, consistent with the reentrant phase behavior. Our electronic Raman data reveal a pronounced feature that is clearly associated with the tetragonal magnetic phase, suggesting the opening of an electronic gap. No phonon ba…
We study Raman response of Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the $\mathbf{C}_\mathrm{5v}$ Penrose and $\mathbf{C}_\mathrm{8v}$ Ammann-Beenker lattices within and beyond the Loudon-Fleury second-order perturbation scheme intending to explore optical features peculiar to quasiperiodic magnets. Within the Loudon-Fleury mechanism, we find one and only Raman-active mode of $\mathrm{E}_2$ symmetry without any dependence on linear incident and scattered polarizations. Beyond the Loudon-Fleury mechanism, two more symmetry species $\mathrm{A}_1$ and $\mathrm{A}_2$ are activated via dynamic ring exchange a…
In this paper, we review recent development in the theory of resonant inelastic light (Raman) scattering in one-dimensional electron systems. The particular systems we have in mind are electron doped GaAs based semiconductor quantum wire nanostructures, although the theory can be easily modified to apply to other one-dimensional systems. We compare the traditional conduction-band-based non-resonant theories with the full resonant theories including the effects of interband transitions. We find that resonance is essential in explaining the experimental data in which the single particle excitati…
We investigate the low energy acoustical and optical modes in $\mathrm{HgBa_2CuO_{4+δ}}$ using inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). The experimental phonon dispersion and the dynamical structure factor are compared with an atomic shell model, and the set of the atomic potentials obtained are discussed. Our results are also compared with those obtained by Raman spectroscopy and with density-of-state data measured by inelastic neutron scattering.
Results of model calculations using exact diagonalization reveal the orbital character of states associated with different Raman loss peaks in Cu $K$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) from La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$. The model includes electronic orbitals necessary to highlight non-local Zhang-Rice singlet, charge transfer and $d$-$d$ excitations, as well as states with apical oxygen 2$p_z$ character. The dispersion of these excitations is discussed with prospects for resonant final state wave-function mapping. A good agreement with experiments emphasizes the substantial multi-orbital cha…
