Highly accurate quantum electron dynamics calculations demonstrate that energy can be efficiently transferred between quantum dots. Specifically, in a double quantum dot an incoming electron is captured by one dot and the excess energy is transferred to the neighboring dot and used to remove an electron from this dot. This process is due to long-range electron correlation and shown to be operative at rather large distances between the dots. The efficiency of the process is greatly enhanced by preparing the double quantum dot such that the incoming electron is initially captured by a two-electron resonance state of the system. In contrast to atoms and molecules in nature, double quantum dots can be manipulated to achieve this enhancement. This mechanism leads to a surprisingly narrow distribution of the energy of the electron removed in the process which is explained by resonance theory. We argue that the process could be exploited in practice.
We have fabricated and studied the photoluminescence from microdisks containing single, selected self-assembled quantum dots. Using two electron beam lithography exposures and a two-step selective wet etching process, the dots were positioned at the microdisks edges with sub-micron precision. The selection and positioning of quantum dots enables an optimum coupling of the dot emission to the microdisks whispering modes.
We study the motion of a pair of electrons along two separate parallel chains of quantum dots. The electrons that are released from the central dot of each chain tend to accompany and not avoid each other. The correlated electron motion involves entanglement of the wave functions which is generated in time upon release of the initial confinement. Observation of the simultaneous presence of electrons at the same side of the chain can provide fingerprint of the paired electron motion.
We recently predicted that the interatomic Coulombic electron capture (ICEC) process, a long-range electron correlation driven capture process, is achievable in gated double quantum dots (DQDs). In ICEC an incoming electron is captured by one QD and the excess energy is used to remove an electron from the neighboring QD. In this work we present systematic full three-dimensional electron dynamics calculations in quasi-one dimensional model potentials that allow for a detailed understanding of the connection between the DQD geometry and the reaction probability for the ICEC process. We derive an…
In the present study, we developed a fabrication process of an electrically driven single-photon LED based on InP QDs emitting in the red spectral range, the wavelength of interest coinciding with the high efficiency window of Si APDs. A deterministic lithography technique allowed for the pre-selection of a suitable QD, here exclusively operated under electrical carrier injection. The final device was characterized under micro-electroluminescence in direct current, as well as in pulsed excitation mode. In particular, under pulsed excitation of one device, single-photon emission of a spectral l…
The electronic energy gap and total dipole moment of chemically functionalized hexagonal and triangular graphene quantum dots are investigated by the density functional theory. It has been found that the energy gap can be efficiently tuned in the selected clusters by edge passivation with different elements or groups. Edge passivation with oxygen provides a considerable decrease of the large energy gap observed in hexagonal nanodots. The edge states and energy gap in triangular graphene quantum dots can also be manipulated by passivation with fluorine. The total dipole moment strongly depends …
We present measurements of the second-order coherence function on emission from single GaN quantum dots. In some cases a large degree of photon antibunching is observed, demonstrating isolation of a single quantum system. For a selected quantum dot, we study the dependence of photon antibunching on excitation power and temperature. Using pulsed excitation, we demonstrate an ultraviolet triggered single-photon source operating at a wavelength of 358 nm.
The random-phase approximation has been used to compute the properties of parabolic two-dimensional quantum dots beyond the mean-field approximation. Special emphasis is put on the ground state correlation energy, the symmetry restoration and the role of the spurious modes within the random-phase approximation. A systematics with the Coulombic interaction strength is presented for the 2-electron dot, while for the 6- and 12-electron dots selected cases are discussed. The validity of the random-phase approximation is assessed by comparison with available exact results.
Density functional theory calculations are performed on phosphorene quantum dots having different shapes and edge terminations to investigate their structure stability, electronic properties, and gas sensing ability. All the selected phosphorene dots, namely hexagonal and triangular flakes with armchair and zigzag terminations, have positive binding energies which insure their stability even though the bond lengths are much longer than those in the infinite phosphorene layer. It is found that all the selected hydrogen passivated quantum dots have a wide energy gap. In contrast, the partial pas…
We proposed and demonstrated that the nuclear spins of the host lattice in GaAs double quantum dots can be strongly polarized in either of two opposite directions, parallel or antiparallel to an external magnetic field. The direction is selected simply by adjusting the dc source-drain voltage of the device. This nuclear polarization manifests itself by repeated controlled electron-nuclear spin scattering in the Pauli spin blockade state. Polarized nuclei are also controlled coherently by means of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). This work confirmed that the nuclear spins in quantum dots are i…
We report on the site-selected growth of bright single InAsP quantum dots embedded within InP photonic nanowire waveguides emitting at telecom wavelengths. We demonstrate a dramatic dependence of the emission rate on both the emission wavelength and the nanowire diameter. With an appropriately designed waveguide, tailored to the emission wavelength of the dot, an increase in count rate by nearly two orders of magnitude (0.4kcps to 35kcps) is obtained for quantum dots emitting in the telecom O-band. Using emission-wavelength-optimised waveguides, we demonstrate bright, narrow linewidth emission…
Kubo formula is used to get the d.c conductance of a statistical ensemble of two-dimensional clusters of the square lattice in the presence of standard diagonal disorder, a uniform magnetic field and random magnetic fluxes. Working within a one-band tight-binding approach the calculation is quite general. The shape of the cluster is rectangular with ideal leads attached to opposite corners. Both geometrical characteristics and physical parameters can be easily selected. The output is just the conductance of a system of given parameters or a statistical ensemble of conductances measured for dif…
The development of multi-node quantum optical circuits has attracted great attention in recent years. In particular, interfacing quantum-light sources, gates and detectors on a single chip is highly desirable for the realization of large networks. In this context, fabrication techniques that enable the deterministic integration of pre-selected quantum-light emitters into nanophotonic elements play a key role when moving forward to circuits containing multiple emitters. Here, we present the deterministic integration of an InAs quantum dot into a 50/50 multi-mode interference beamsplitter via in…
We exploit hyperfine interactions in a single Mn-ion confined in a quantum dot (QD) to create a qudit, i.e. a multi-level quantum-bit system, with well defined, addressable and robust set of spin states for the realization of universal quantum gates. We generate and probe an arbitrary superposition of states between selected hyperfine energy level pairs by using electron double resonance detected nuclear magnetic resonance (EDNMR). This enables the observation of Rabi oscillations and the experimental realization of NOT and SWAP universal quantum gates that are robust against decoherence. Our …
We consider electron states in n-p double quantum dots defined in a semiconducting carbon nanotube (CNT) by an external potential. We describe formation of extended single-electron orbitals originating from the conduction and valence bands confined in a minimum and a maximum of the external potential, respectively. We solve the problem of a confined electron pair using an exact diagonalization method within the tight-binding approach, which allows for a straightforward treatment of the conduction and valence band states, keeping an exact account for the intervalley scattering mediated by the a…
Quantum dots are arguably one of the best platforms for optically accessible spin based qubits. The paramount demand of extended qubit storage time can be met by using quantum-dot-confined dark exciton: a longlived electron-hole pair with parallel spins. Despite its name the dark exciton reveals weak luminescence that can be directly measured. The origins of this optical activity remain largely unexplored. In this work, using the atomistic tight-binding method combined with configuration-interaction approach, we demonstrate that atomic-scale randomness strongly affects oscillator strength of d…
Integrated quantum photonic circuits (IQPCs) with deterministically integrated quantum emitters are critical elements for scalable quantum information applications and have attracted significant attention in recent years. However, scaling up them towards fully functional photonic circuits with multiple deterministically integrated quantum emitters to generate photonic input states remains a great challenge. In this work, we report on a monolithic prototype IQPC consisting of two pre-selected quantum dots deterministically integrated into nanobeam cavities at the input ports of a 2x2 multimode …
While quantum dots are at the forefront of quantum device technology, tuning multi-dot systems requires a lengthy experimental process as multiple parameters need to be accurately controlled. This process becomes increasingly time-consuming and difficult to perform manually as the devices become more complex and the number of tuning parameters grows. In this work, we present a crucial step towards automated tuning of quantum dot qubits. We introduce an algorithm driven by machine learning that uses a small number of coarse-grained measurements as its input and tunes the quantum dot system into…
Precise manipulation of individual charge carriers in nanoelectronic circuits underpins practical applications of their most basic quantum property --- the universality and invariance of the elementary charge. A charge pump generates a net current from periodic external modulation of parameters controlling a nanostructure connected to source and drain leads; in the regime of quantized pumping the current varies in steps of $q_e f$ as function of control parameters, where $q_e$ is the electron charge and $f$ is the frequency of modulation. In recent years, robust and accurate quantized charge p…
Chiral light-matter interaction between photonic nanostructures with quantum emitters shows great potential to implement spin-photon interfaces for quantum information processing. Position-dependent spin momentum locking of the quantum emitter is important for these chiral coupled nanostructures. Here, we report the position-dependent chiral coupling between quantum dots (QDs) and cross waveguides both numerically and experimentally. Four quantum dots distributed at different positions in the cross section are selected to characterize the chiral properties of the device. Directional emission i…
We report on two-photon interferences from highly indistinguishable single photons emitted by a quantum dot. Stricly resonant excitation with picosecond laser pulses allows coherent state preparation with a signifi- cantly increased coherence time (T2 \sim 1 ns) and reduced lifetime (T1 \sim 650 ps), as compared to a non-resonant excitation scheme. Building-up the Hong-Ou-Mandel dip without post-selection of the interfering photons, visi- bilities greater than 70 % have been observed. Near-unity indistinguishable photons could be achieved for every dot if charge noise is controlled. Indeed, th…
Silicon photonics enables scaling of quantum photonic systems by allowing the creation of extensive, low-loss, reconfigurable networks linking various functional on-chip elements. Inclusion of single quantum emitters onto photonic circuits, acting as on-demand sources of indistinguishable photons or single-photon nonlinearities, may enable large-scale chip-based quantum photonic circuits and networks. Towards this, we use low-temperature $\textit{in situ}$ electron-beam lithography to deterministically produce hybrid GaAs/Si$_3$N$_4$ photonic devices containing single InAs quantum dots precise…
Effective mass equations are the simplest models of carrier states in a semiconductor structures that reduce the complexity of a solid-state system to Schrödinger- or Pauli-like equations resempling those well known from quantum mechanics textbooks. Here we present a systematic derivation of a conduction-band effective mass equation for a self-assembled semiconductor quantum dot in a magnetic field from the 8-band kp theory. The derivation allows us to classify various forms of the effective mass equations in terms of a hierarchy of approximations. We assess the accuracy of the approximations …
We present a comprehensive and integrated model-independent ab initio study of the structural, cohesive, electronic, and optical properties of silicon quantum dots of various morphologies and sizes in the framework of all-electron static and time-dependent density functional theory (DFT, TDFT), using the well-tested B3LYP and other properly chosen functional(s). Our raw ab initio results for all these properties for hydrogen passivated nanocrystals of various growth models and sizes from 1 to 32 Angstroms, are subsequently fitted, using power-law dependence with judicially selected exponents, …
The formation of nanostructures during metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy on patterned (001)/(111)B GaAs substrates is reviewed. The focus of this review is on the seminal experiments that revealed the key kinetic processes during nanostructure formation and the theory and modelling that explained the phenomenology in successively greater detail. Experiments have demonstrated that V-groove quantum wires and pyramidal quantum dots result from self-limiting concentration profiles that develop at the bottom of V-grooves and inverted pyramids, respectively. In the 1950s, long before the practical im…
The implementation of fiber-based long-range quantum communication requires tunable sources of single photons at the telecom C-band. Stable and easy-to-implement wavelength- tunability of individual sources is crucial to (i) bring remote sources into resonance, to (ii) define a wavelength standard and to (iii) ensure scalability to operate a quantum repeater. So far, the most promising sources for true, telecom single photons are semiconductor quantum dots, due to their ability to deterministically and reliably emit single and entangled photons. However, the required wavelength-tunability is h…
We review recent advances on the theory of spin qubits in nanostructures. We focus on four selected topics. First, we show how to form spin qubits in the new and promising material graphene. Afterwards, we discuss spin relaxation and decoherence in quantum dots. In particular, we demonstrate how charge fluctations in the surrounding environment cause spin decay via spin--orbit coupling. We then turn to a brief overview of how one can use electron-dipole spin resonance (EDSR) to perform single spin rotations in quantum dots using an oscillating electric field. The final topic we cover is the sp…
