We study the motion of a pair of electrons along two separate parallel chains of quantum dots. The electrons that are released from the central dot of each chain tend to accompany and not avoid each other. The correlated electron motion involves entanglement of the wave functions which is generated in time upon release of the initial confinement. Observation of the simultaneous presence of electrons at the same side of the chain can provide fingerprint of the paired electron motion.
Interacting electrons in quantum dots with large Thouless number $g$ in the three classical random matrix symmetry classes are well-understood. When a specific type of spin-orbit coupling known to be dominant in two dimensional semiconductor quantum dots is introduced, we show that a new interacting quantum critical crossover energy scale emerges and low-energy quasiparticles generically have a decay width proportional to their energy. The low-energy physics of this system is an example of a universal interacting crossover regime.
We study spectral and transport properties of interacting quantum dots with spin. Two particular model systems are investigated: Lateral multilevel and two parallel quantum dots. In both cases different paths through the system can give rise to interference. We demonstrate that this strengthens the multilevel Kondo effect for which a simple two-stage mechanism is proposed. In parallel dots we show under which conditions the peak of an interference-induced orbital Kondo effect can be split.
We present a general formalism to study adiabatic pumping through interacting quantum dots. We derive a formula that relates the pumped charge to the local, instantaneous Green function of the dot. This formula is then applied to the infinite-U Anderson model both for weak and strong tunnel-coupling strengths.
We derive a complete expression for the interaction correction to the $I-V$ curve of two connected in series metallic quantum dots. For strongly asymmetric dots in a wide range of parameters this interaction correction depends logarithmically on voltage and temperature.
We observe a low-lying sharp spin mode of three interacting electrons in an array of nanofabricated AlGaAs/GaAs quantum dots by means of resonant inelastic light scattering. The finding is enabled by a suppression of the inhomogeneous contribution to the excitation spectra obtained by reducing the number of optically-probed quantum dots. Supported by configuration-interaction calculations we argue that the observed spin mode offers a direct probe of Stoner ferromagnetism in the simplest case of three interacting spin one-half fermions.
We analyzed the localized charge dynamics in the system of $N$ interacting single-level quantum dots (QDs) coupled to the continuous spectrum states in the presence of Coulomb interaction between electrons within the dots. Different dots geometry and initial charge configurations were considered. The analysis was performed by means of Heisenberg equations for localized electrons pair correlators. We revealed that charge trapping takes place for a wide range of system parameters and we suggested the QDs geometry for experimental observations of this phenomenon. We demonstrated significant suppr…
We explore the structural changes in charge the density and the electron configuration of quantum dots caused by the presence of other dots in an array, and the interaction of neighboring dots. We discuss what recent measurements and calculation of the far-infrared absorption reveal about almost isolated quantum dots and investigate some aspects of the complex transition from isolated dots to dots with strongly overlapping electron density. We also address the the effects on the magnetization of such dot array.
The low-lying eigenstates of a system of two electrons confined within a two-dimensional quantum dot with a hard polygonal boundary are obtained by means of exact diagonalization. The transition from a weakly correlated charge distribution for small dots to a strongly correlated "Wigner molecule" for large dots is studied, and the behaviour at the crossover is determined. In sufficiently large dots, a recently proposed mapping to an effective charge-spin model is investigated, and is found to produce the correct ordering of the energy levels and to give a good first approximation to the size o…
The renormalization group approach as developed by the author for Fermi liquids is applied to clean Fermi liquids and ballistic quantum dots. In the former case Landau theory is shown to be a fixed point and in the latter the Universal Hamiltonian is shown to be a fixed point for weak coupling. The strong coupling phase is analyzed using large N and Random Matrix methods.
We derive a formula describing the adiabatically pumped charge through an interacting quantum dot within the scattering matrix and Green's function approach. We show that when the tunneling rates between the leads and the dot are varied adiabatically in time, both in modulus and phase, the current induced in the dot consists of two terms, the pumping current and a rectification-like term. The last contribution arises from the time-derivative of the tunneling phase and can have even or odd parity with respect to the pumping phase φ. The rectification-like term is also discussed in relation to s…
We review recent work on resonant Andreev tunneling through a strongly interacting quantum dot connected to a normal and to a superconducting lead. We derive a general expression for the current flowing in the structure and discuss the linear and non-linear transport in the nonperturbative regime. New effects associated to the Kondo resonance combined with the two-particle tunneling arise. The Kondo anomaly in the $I-V$ characteristics depends on the relative size of the gap energy and the Kondo temperature.
Quantum dots with large Thouless number $g$ embody a regime where both disorder and interactions can be treated nonperturbatively using large-N techniques (with $N=g$) and quantum phase transitions can be studied. Here we focus on dots where the noninteracting Hamiltonian is drawn from a crossover ensemble between two symmetry classes, where the crossover parameter introduces a new, tunable energy scale independent of and much smaller than the Thouless energy. We show that the quantum critical regime, dominated by collective critical fluctuations, can be accessed at the new energy scale. The n…
We present a theory of transport through interacting quantum dots coupled to normal and superconducting leads in the limit of weak tunnel coupling. A Josephson current between two superconducting leads, carried by first-order tunnel processes, can be established by non-equilibrium proximity effect. Both Andreev and Josephson current is suppressed for bias voltages below a threshold set by the Coulomb charging energy. A $π$-transition of the supercurrent can be driven by tuning gate or bias voltages.
We present a detailed theoretical investigation of the effect of Coulomb interactions on electron transport through quantum dots and double barrier structures connected to a voltage source via an arbitrary linear impedance. Combining real time path integral techniques with the scattering matrix approach we derive the effective action and evaluate the current-voltage characteristics of quantum dots at sufficiently large conductances. Our analysis reveals a reach variety of different regimes which we specify in details for the case of chaotic quantum dots. At sufficiently low energies the intera…
A single hole spin in a semiconductor quantum dot has emerged as a quantum bit that is potentially superior to an electron spin. A key feature of holes is that they have a greatly reduced hyperfine interaction with nuclear spins, which is one of the biggest difficulties in working with an electron spin. It is now essential to show that holes are viable for quantum information processing by demonstrating fast quantum gates and scalability. To this end we have developed InAs/GaAs quantum dots coupled through coherent tunneling and charged with controlled numbers of holes. We report fast, single …
We develop a low-energy nonequilibrium field theory for weakly interacting quantum dots. The theory is based on the Keldysh field integral in the spin channel of the quantum dot described by the single impurity Anderson Hamiltonian. The effective Keldysh action is a functional of the Hubbard-Stratonovich magnetization field decoupling the quantum dot spin channel. We expand this action up to the second order with respect to the magnetization field, which allows to describe nonequilibrium interacting quantum dots at low temperatures and weak electron-electron interactions,up to the contacts-dot…
Quantum dots are one of the paradigmatic solid-state systems for quantum engineering, providing an outstanding tunability to explore fundamental quantum phenomena. Here we show that non-Hermitian many-body topological modes can be realized in a quantum dot chain by utilizing a gate-tunable modulation of dissipation, and they emerge purely because of the non-Hermiticity. By exactly solving the non-Hermitian interacting description both with exact diagonalization and tensor-networks, we demonstrate that these topological modes are robust even in the presence strong interactions, leading to a str…
We present a complete classification of the electron-electron interaction in chaotic quantum dots based on expansion in inverse powers of $1/M$, the number of the electron states in the Thouless window, $M \simeq k_F R$. This classification is quite universal and extends and enlarges the universal non interacting RMT statistical ensembles. We show that existing Coulomb blockade peak spacing data for $B=0$ and $B\ne 0$ is described quite accurately by the interacting GSE and by its extension to $B\ne 0$. The bimodal structure existing in the interacting GUE case is completely washed out by the …
We investigate the effects of Coulomb interaction on charge transfer through a quantum dot attached to a normal and a superconducting lead. While for voltages much larger than the gap we recover the usual result for normal conductors, for voltages much smaller than the gap superconducting correlations lead to a drastically different behavior. Especially, the usual charge doubling in the normal case is reflected in the occurence of quartets due to the onsite interaction.
We study non-adiabatic charge pumping through single-level quantum dots taking into account Coulomb interactions. We show how a truncated set of equations of motion can be propagated in time by means of an auxiliary-mode expansion. This formalism is capable of treating the time-dependent electronic transport for arbitrary driving parameters. We verify that the proposed method describes very precisely the well-known limit of adiabatic pumping through quantum dots without Coulomb interactions. As an example we discuss pumping driven by short voltage pulses for various interaction strengths. Such…
We study resonant Andreev tunneling through a strongly interacting quantum dot connected to a normal and to a superconducting lead. We obtain a formula for the Andreev current and apply it to discuss the linear and non-linear transport in the nonperturbative regime, where the effects of the Kondo resonance on the two particle tunneling arise. In particular we notice an enhancement of the Kondo anomaly in the $I-V$ characteristics due to the superconducting electrode.
We develop a detailed theoretical investigation of the effect of Coulomb interaction on electron transport in arrays of chaotic quantum dots and diffusive metallic wires. Employing the real time path integral technique we formulate a new Langevin-type of approach which exploits a direct relation between shot noise and interaction effects in mesoscopic conductors. With the aid of this approach we establish a general expression for the Fano factor of 1D quantum dot arrays and derive a complete formula for the interaction correction to the current which embraces all perturbative results previousl…
We study subgap transport through an interacting quantum dot tunnel coupled to one normal and two superconducting leads. To check the reliability of an approximation of an infinitely-large gap $Δ$ in the superconducting leads and weak tunnel coupling to the normal lead, we perform a $1/Δ$ expansion, and we analyze next-to-leading order corrections in the tunnel coupling to the normal lead. Furthermore, we propose a resummation approach to calculate the Andreev bound states for finite $Δ$. The results are substantially more accurate than those obtained by mean-field treatments and favorably com…
We use a variational Monte Carlo algorithm to solve the electronic structure of two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots in external magnetic field. We present accurate many-body wave functions for the system in various magnetic field regimes. We show the importance of symmetry, and demonstrate how it can be used to simplify the variational wave functions. We present in detail the algorithm for efficient wave function optimization. We also present a Monte Carlo -based diagonalization technique to solve the quantum dot problem in the strong magnetic field limit where the system is of a multic…
We study non-adiabatic two-parameter charge and spin pumping through a single-level quantum dot with Coulomb interaction. For the limit of weak tunnel coupling and in the regime of pumping frequencies up to the tunneling rates, $Ω\lesssim Γ/\hbar$, we perform an exact resummation of contributions of all orders in the pumping frequency. As striking non-adiabatic signatures, we find frequency-dependent phase shifts in the charge and spin currents, which allow for an effective single-parameter pumping as well as pure spin without charge currents.
We analyse the ground state of spinless fermions on a lattice in a weakly disordered potential, interacting via a nearest neighbour interaction, by applying the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. We find that charge density modulations emerge progressively when r_s >1, even away from half-filling, with only short-range density correlations. Classical geometry dependent "magic numbers" can show up in the addition spectrum which are remarkably robust against quantum fluctuations and disorder averaging.
We develop a generic method in Liouville space to describe the dissipative dynamics of coherent interacting quantum dots with adiabatic time dependence beyond linear response. We show how the adiabatic response can be related to effective quantities known from real-time renormalization group methods for stationary quantities. We propose the study of a generalized $RC$-time as a characteristic time scale. We apply the method to the interacting resonant level model and calculate the nonlinear adiabatic charge response to time-dependent gate voltages, tunneling barriers and Coulomb interaction. T…
We calculate the current correlations for the steady-state electron transport through multi-level parallel quantum dots embedded in a short quantum wire, that is placed in a non-perfect photon cavity. We account for the electron-electron Coulomb interaction, and the para- and diamagnetic electron-photon interactions with a stepwise scheme of configuration interactions and truncation of the many-body Fock spaces. In the spectral density of the temporal current-current correlations we identify all the transitions, radiative and non-radiative, active in the system in order to maintain the steady …
We describe the theory of few Coulomb-correlated electrons in a magnetic quantum dot formed in graphene. While the corresponding nonrelativistic (Schrödinger) problem is well understood, a naive generalization to graphene's "relativistic" (Dirac-Weyl) spectrum encounters divergencies and is ill-defined. We employ Sucher's projection formalism to overcome these problems. Exact diagonalization results for the two-electron quantum dot, i.e., the artificial helium atom in graphene, are presented.
We apply a theory for the transmission probability of small interacting systems, which was formulated based on the Kubo formalism in our previous study, to a series of quantum dots described by the N-impurity Anderson model. In this report, we present the transmission pobability for the system of N=2 calculated using the order $U^2$ self-energy and vertex corrections. Particularly, we examine the features in the two typical parameter regions, $t<Γ$ and $t>Γ$, where the Kondo effect or the inter-dot correlation dominates. Here, $t$ is the inter-dot transfer and $Γ$ is the level broadening cause…
This paper reviews recent studies of mesoscopic fluctuations in transport through ballistic quantum dots, emphasizing differences between conduction through open dots and tunneling through nearly isolated dots. Both the open dots and the tunnel-contacted dots show random, repeatable conductance fluctuations with universal statistical proper-ties that are accurately characterized by a variety of theoretical models including random matrix theory, semiclassical methods and nonlinear sigma model calculations. We apply these results in open dots to extract the dephasing rate of electrons within the…
The transient response of a quantum dot with strong Coulomb interaction to a fast change in the gate potential, as well as the stationary ac-response to a slow harmonic variation of the gate potential are computed by means of a real-time diagrammatic expansion in the tunnel-coupling strength. We find that after a fast switching, the relaxation of charge and spin are governed by a single time constant each, which differ from each other due to Coulomb repulsion. We compare the response to a step potential with the $RC$ time extracted from the ac response.
Low-temperature transport measurements have been carried out on single-wall carbon nanotube quantum dots in a weakly coupled regime in magnetic fields up to 8 Tesla. Four-electron shell filling was observed, and the magnetic field evolution of each Coulomb peak was investigated, in which magnetic field induced spin flip and resulting spin polarization were observed. Excitation spectroscopy measurements have revealed Zeeman splitting of single particle states for one electron in the shell, and demonstrated singlet and triplet states with direct observation of the exchange splitting at zero-magn…
Emergence of half-integer filling factor states, such as nu=5/2 and 7/2, is found in quantum dots by using numerical many-electron methods. These states have interesting similarities and differences with their counterstates found in the two-dimensional electron gas. The nu=1/2 states in quantum dots are shown to have high overlaps with the composite fermion states. The lower overlap of the Pfaffian state indicates that electrons might not be paired in quantum dot geometry. The predicted nu=5/2 state has high spin polarization which may have impact on the spin transport through quantum dot devi…
We study the full counting statistics of electronic transport through a single-level quantum dot weakly coupled to two leads, with either one or both of them being ferromagnetic. The interplay of Coulomb interaction and finite spin polarization implies spin-correlation induced charge correlations that give rise to super-Poissonian transport behavior and positive cross correlations of the currents of the two spin species. In the case of two ferromagnetic leads, we analyze the nontrivial dependence of the cumulants on the angle between the polarization directions of the leads. We find diverging …
We study electronic transport through a strongly interacting quantum dot by using the finite temperature extension of Wilson's numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. This allows the linear conductance to be calculated at all temperatures and in particular at very low temperature where quantum fluctuations and the Kondo effect strongly modify the transport. The quantum dot investigated has one active level for transport and is modeled by an Anderson impurity model attached to left and right electron reservoirs. The predictions for the linear conductance are compared to available experime…
We investigate the AC Josephson current through a quantum dot with strong Coulomb interaction attached to two superconducting and one normal lead. To this end, we perform a perturbation expansion in the tunneling couplings within a diagrammatic real-time technique. The AC Josephson current is connected to the reduced density matrix elements that describe superconducting correlations induced on the quantum dot via proximity effect. We analyze the dependence of the AC signal on the level position of the quantum dot, the charging energy, and the applied bias voltages.
In this article we review aspects of charge and heat transport in interacting quantum dots and molecular junctions under stationary and time-dependent non-equilibrium conditions due to finite electrical and thermal bias. In particular, we discuss how a discrete level spectrum can be beneficial for thermoelectric applications, and investigate the detrimental effects of molecular vibrations on the efficiency of a molecular quantum dot as an energy converter. In addition, we consider the effects of a slow time-dependent modulation of applied voltages on the transport properties of a quantum dot a…
We develop a theory for charge and spin current between two canted magnetic leads flowing through a quantum dot with an arbitrary local interaction. For a noncollinear magnetic configuration, we calculate equilibrium and nonequilibrium current biased by voltage or temperature difference or pumped by magnetic dynamics. We are able to explicitly separate the equilibrium and nonequilibrium contributions to the current, both of which can be written in terms of the full retarded Green's function on the dot. Taking the specific example of a single-level quantum dot with a large on-site Coulomb inter…
We present a theory of non-equilibrium superconducting proximity effect in an interacting quantum dot induced by a time-dependent tunnel coupling between dot and a superconducting lead. The proximity effect, that is established when the driving frequency fulfills a gate-voltage-dependent resonance condition, can be probed through the tunneling current into a weakly-coupled normal lead. Furthermore, we propose to generate and manipulate coherent superpositions of quantum-dot states with electron numbers differing by two, by applying pulsed oscillatory variations to the couplings between dot and…
We show that the classical dynamics of independent particles can determine the quantum properties of interacting electrons in the ballistic regime. This connection is established using diagrammatic perturbation theory and semiclassical finite-temperature Green functions. Specifically, the orbital magnetism is greatly enhanced over the Landau susceptibility by the combined effects of interactions and finite size. The presence of families of periodic orbits in regular systems makes their susceptibility parametrically larger than that of chaotic systems, a difference which emerges from correlatio…
We show that a Rabi-splitting of the states of strongly interacting electrons in parallel quantum dots embedded in a short quantum wire placed in a photon cavity can be produced by either the para- or the dia-magnetic electron-photon interactions when the geometry of the system is properly accounted for and the photon field is tuned close to a resonance with the electron system. We use these two resonances to explore the electroluminescence caused by the transport of electrons through the one- and two-electron ground states of the system and their corresponding conventional and vacuum electrol…
In this paper we study the interplay between interference effects in quantum dots (manifested through the appearance of Fano resonances in the conductance), and interactions taken into account in the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. In the non-interacting case we find that interference may lead to the observation of more than one conductance peak per dot level as a function of an applied gate voltage. This may explain recent experimental findings, which were thought to be caused by interaction effects. For the interacting case we find a wide variety of different interesting phenomen…
Using Single Electron Capacitance Spectroscopy, we study electron additions in quantum dots containing two potential minima separated by a shallow barrier. Analysis of addition spectra in magnetic field allows us to distinguish whether electrons are localized in either potential minimum or delocalized over the entire dot. We demonstrate that high magnetic field abruptly splits up a low-density droplet into two smaller fragments, each residing in a potential minimum. An unexplained cancellation of electron repulsion between electrons in these fragments gives rise to paired electron additions.
We study the ground state of $N$ weakly interacting electrons (with $N\le 10$) in a two-dimensional parabolic quantum dot with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Using dimensionless parameters for the Coulomb interaction, $λ\lesssim 1$, and the Rashba coupling, $α\gg 1$, the low-energy physics is characterized by an almost flat single-particle dispersion. From an analytical approach for $α\to \infty$ and $N=2$, and from numerical exact diagonalization and Hartree-Fock calculations, we find a transition from a conventional unmagnetized ground state (for $λ<λ_c$) to an orbital ferromagnet (for $…
We analyze tunneling-induced quantum fluctuations in a single-level quantum dot with arbitrarily strong onsite Coulomb interaction, generating cotunneling processes and renormalizing system parameters. For a perturbative analysis of these quantum fluctuations, we remove off-shell parts of the Hamiltonian via a canonical transformation. We find that the tunnel couplings for the transitions connecting empty and single occupation and connecting single and double occupation of the dot renormalize with the same magnitude but with opposite signs. This has an important impact on the shape of the reno…
We discuss out-of-equilibrium population imbalances between different orbital states due to applied thermal gradients. This purely thermoelectric orbital effect appears quite generically in nanostructures with a pseudospin degree of freedom. We establish an orbital Seebeck coefficient that characterizes the induced orbital bias in response to a temperature difference between reservoirs coupled to a quantum conductor. We analyze a two-terminal strongly interacting quantum dot with two orbital states and find that the orbital thermopower acts as an excellent tool to describe the transition betwe…
We study $N$ interacting massless Dirac fermions confined in a two-dimensional quantum dot. Physical realizations of this problem include a graphene monolayer and the surface state of a strong topological insulator. We consider both a magnetic confinement and an infinite mass confinement. The ground state energy is computed as a function of the effective interaction parameter $α$ from the Hartree-Fock approximation and, alternatively, by employing the Müller exchange functional. For N=2, we compare those approximations to exact diagonalization results. The Hartree-Fock energies are highly accu…
Spin properties of two interacting electrons in a quantum dot (QD) embedded in a nanowire with controlled aspect ratio and longitudinal magnetic fields are investigated by using a configuration interaction (CI) method and exact diagonalization (ED) techniques. The developed CI theory based on a three-dimensional (3D) parabolic model provides explicit formulations of the Coulomb matrix elements and allows for straightforward and efficient numerical implementation. Our studies reveal fruitful features of spin singlet-triplet transitions of two electrons confined in a nanowire quantum dot (NWQD),…
We investigate the nonlinear regime of charge and energy transport through Coulomb-blockaded quantum dots. We discuss crossed effects that arise when electrons move in response to thermal gradients (Seebeck effect) or energy flows in reaction to voltage differences (Peltier effect). We find that the differential thermoelectric conductance shows a characteristic Coulomb butterfly structure due to charging effects. Importantly, we show that experimentally observed thermovoltage zeros are caused by the activation of Coulomb resonances at large thermal shifts. Furthermore, the power dissipation as…
We report on the electronic properties of few interacting electrons confined in a parabolic quantum dot based on a theoretical approach developed to investigate the influence of Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction on such a system. We note that the spin-orbit coupling profoundly influences the energy spectrum of interacting electrons in a quantum dot. Here we present accurate results for the energy levels and optical-absorption spectra for parabolic quantum dots containing upto four interacting electrons, in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and under the influence of an externally ap…
We propose an approach allowing the computation of currents and their correlations in interacting multiterminal mesoscopic systems involving quantum dots coupled to normal and/or superconducting leads. The formalism relies on the expression of branching currents and noise crossed correlations in terms of one- and two-particle Green's functions for the dots electrons, which are then evaluated self-consistently within a conserving approximation. We then apply this to the Cooper-pair beam-splitter setup recently proposed [L. Hofstetter et al. Nature (London) 461 960 (2009); Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 1…
We study the effect of Rashba spin-orbit interaction on the Josephson current through a double quantum dot in presence of Coulomb repulsion. In particular, we describe the characteristic effects on the magnetic-field induced singlet-triplet transition in the molecular regime. Exploring the whole parameter space, we analyze the effects of the device asymmetry, the orientation of the applied magnetic field with respect to the spin-orbit interaction, and finite temperatures. We find that at finite temperatures the orthogonal component of the spin-orbit interaction exhibits a similar effect as the…
We probe for statistical and Coulomb induced spin textures among the low-lying states of repulsively-interacting particles confined to potentials that are both rotationally and time-reversal invariant. In particular, we focus on two-dimensional quantum dots and employ configuration-interaction techniques to directly compute the correlated many-body eigenstates of the system. We produce spatial maps of the single-particle charge and spin density and verify the annular structure of the charge density and the rotational invariance of the spin field. We further compute two-point spin correlations …
The transport properties of a system of two interacting dots, one of them directly connected to the leads constituting a side-coupled configuration (SCD), are studied in the weak and strong tunnel-coupling limits. The conductance behavior of the SCD structure has new and richer physics than the better studied system of two dots aligned with the leads (ACD). In the weak coupling regime and in the case of one electron per dot, the ACD configuration gives rise to two mostly independent Kondo states. In the SCD topology, the inserted dot is in a Kondo state while the side-connected one presents Co…
We develop path-integral Monte Carlo simulations for a parabolic two-dimensional (2D) quantum dot containing $N$ interacting electrons in the presence of Dresselhaus and/or Rashba spin-orbit couplings. Our method solves in a natural way the spin contamination problem and allows for numerically exact finite-temperature results at weak spin-orbit coupling. For $N<10$ electrons, we present data for the addition energy, the particle density, and the total spin $S$ in the Wigner molecule regime of strong Coulomb interactions. We identify magic numbers at N=3 and N=7 via a peak in the addition energ…
Quantum control of the wave function of two interacting electrons confined in quasi-one-dimensional double-well semiconductor structures is demonstrated. The control strategies are based on the knowledge of the energy spectrum as a function of an external uniform electric field. When two low-lying levels have avoided crossings our system behaves dynamically to a large extent as a two-level system. This characteristic is exploited to implement coherent control strategies based on slow (adiabatic passage) and rapid (diabatic Landau-Zener transition) changes of the external field. We apply this m…
We theoretically investigate the full time evolution of a nonequilibrium double quantum dot structure from initial conditions corresponding to different product states (no entanglement between dot and lead) to a nonequilibrium steady state. The structure is described by a two-level spinless Anderson model where the levels are coupled to two leads held at different chemical potentials. The problem is solved by a numerically exact hierarchical master equation technique and the results are compared to approximate ones obtained from Born-Markov theory. The methods allow us to study the time evolut…
We present a novel reconfigurable metal-oxide-semiconductor multi-gate transistor that can host a quadruple quantum dot in silicon. The device consist of an industrial quadruple-gate silicon nanowire field-effect transistor. Exploiting the corner effect, we study the versatility of the structure in the single quantum dot and the serial double quantum dot regimes and extract the relevant capacitance parameters. We address the fabrication variability of the quadruple-gate approach which, paired with improved silicon fabrication techniques, makes the corner state quantum dot approach a promising …
A theoretical study of the thermoelectric current and energy harvesting in an interacting double quantum dot system, connected to reservoirs held at different chemical potentials and temperatures is presented. Using a rate-equation approach, the current is evaluated for different energetic configurations of the double quantum dot. We discuss in detail the current-temperature gradient relations (the thermoelectric analog to current-voltage relations), and demonstrate that, due to interactions, the current is non-monotonically dependent on thermal bias. This interaction-induced non-monotonicity …
