Using time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, we study the role of amplitude and phase fluctuations in the recovery of charge and spin stripe phases in response to a pump pulse that melts the orders. For parameters relevant to the case where charge order precedes spin order thermodynamically, amplitude recovery governs the initial time scales, while phase recovery controls behavior at longer times. In addition to these intrinsic effects, there is a longer spin re-orientation time scale related to the scattering geometry that dominates the recovery of the spin phase. Coupling between the charge and spin orders locks the amplitude and similarly the phase recovery, reducing the number of distinct time scales. Our results well reproduce the major experimental features of pump-probe x-ray diffraction measurements on the striped nickelate La$_{1.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$NiO$_4$. They highlight the main idea of this work, which is the use of time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory to study systems with multiple coexisting order parameters.
We consider the model of strongly-correlated system of electrons described by an extended Falicov-Kimball Hamiltonian where the stability of some axial and diagonal striped phases was proved. Introducing a next-nearest-neighbor hopping, small enough not to destroy the striped structure, we examine rigorously how the presence of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping anisotropy reduces the $π/2$-rotation degeneracy of the diagonal-striped phase. The effect appears to be similar to that in the case of anisotropy of the nearest-neighbor hopping: the stripes are oriented in the direction of the weaker …
Recently, it has been proposed that the butterfly velocity - a speed at which quantum information propagates - may provide a fundamental bound on diffusion constants in dirty incoherent metals. We analytically compute the charge diffusion constant and the butterfly velocity in charge-neutral holographic matter with long wavelength "hydrodynamic" disorder in a single spatial direction. In this limit, we find that the butterfly velocity does not set a sharp lower bound for the charge diffusion constant.
We investigate the formation of partially filled domain walls in the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the presence of long-range interaction. Using an unrestricted Gutzwiller variational approach we show that: i) the strong local interaction favors charge segregation in stripe domain walls; ii) The long-range interaction favors the formation of half-filled vertical stripes with a period doubling due to the charge and a period quadrupling due to the spins along the wall. Our results show that, besides the underlying lattice structure, also the electronic interactions can contribute to determine…
Switching on interchain coupling in a system of one-dimensional strongly interacting chains often leads to an ordered state. Quite generally, there is a competition between an insulating charge-density-wave and a superconducting state. In the case of repulsive interactions, charge-density wave usually wins over superconductivity. Here, we show that a suitable modulation in the form of a period 4 bond-centered stripe can reverse this balance even in the repulsive case and produce a superconducting state with relatively high temperature.
Using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we investigate the metal-insulator transitions induced by the stripe of charge density in an interacting two-dimensional Dirac fermion system. The stripe will introduce the transport anisotropy and insulating intermediate phase into the system, accompanied by the change of band structure and a peak of density of states around Fermi energy. In the case of strong correlation, stripe exhibits competition with Coulomb repulsion through closing the energy gap and disrupting the magnetic order, and finally drives the system in Mott insulating phase b…
We present a combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) study of the prominent transition metal dichalcogenide IrTe$_2$ upon potassium (K) deposition on its surface. Pristine IrTe$_2$ undergoes a series of charge-ordered phase transitions below room temperature that are characterized by the formation of stripes of Ir dimers of different periodicities. Supported by density functional theory calculations, we first show that the K atoms dope the topmost IrTe$_2$ layer with electrons, therefore strongly decreasing the work function and shifting on…
We analyze the magnetically ordered phases in the Kondo lattice model on a square lattice around quarter filling using the dynamical mean field theory. We find that close to quarter filling besides the paramagnetic phase, at least three magnetic phases compete. These phases are a ferromagnetic state, a partial Kondo screened state, which is a combination of charge order and magnetic order, and a striped magnetic phase, which is ferromagnetically ordered in one direction and antiferromagnetically in the other direction. We analyze the spectral properties of these states and show that the PKS st…
Hour-glass-shaped magnetic excitation spectra have been detected in a variety of doped transition-metal oxides with stripe-like charge order. Compared to the predictions of spin-wave theory, these spectra display a different intensity distribution and anomalous broadening. Here we show, based on a comprehensive modelling of these phenomena for La5/3Sr1/3CoO4, how quenched disorder in the charge sector causes frustration, and consequently cluster-glass behavior at low temperatures, in the spin sector. This spin-glass physics, which is insensitive to the detailed nature of the charge disorder, b…
Recent transport experiments in the original cuprate high temperature superconductor, {La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$}, have revealed a remarkable sequence of transitions and crossovers which give rise to a form of dynamical dimensional reduction, in which a bulk crystal becomes essentially superconducting in two directions while it remains poorly metallic in the third. We identify these phenomena as arising from a distinct new superconducting state, the "striped superconductor," in which the superconducting order is spatially modulated, so that its volume average value is zero. Here, in addition to …
We report inelastic neutron scattering results that reveal an hour-glass magnetic excitation spectrum in La1.75Sr0.25CoO4. The magnetic spectrum is similar to that observed previously in La1.67Sr0.33CoO4, but the spectral features are broader. We show that the spectrum of La1.75Sr0.25CoO4 can be modeled by the spin dynamics of a system with a disordered cluster spin glass ground state. Bulk magnetization measurements are presented which support the proposed glassy ground state. The observations reiterate the importance of quasi-one-dimensional magnetic correlations and disorder for the hour-gl…
The interplay between charge order and superconductivity remains one of the central themes of research in quantum materials. In the case of cuprates, the coupling between striped charge fluctuations and local electromagnetic fields is especially important, as it affects transport properties, coherence and dimensionality of superconducting correlations. Here, we study the emission of coherent terahertz radiation in single-layer cuprates of the La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ family, for which this effect is expected to be forbidden by symmetry. We find that emission vanishes for compounds in which the …
The striped cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=\frac18)$ undergoes several transitions below the charge-ordering temperature $T_{co}$ = 54 K. From Nernst experiments, we find that, below $T_{co}$, there exists a large, anomalous Nernst signal $e_{N,even}(H,T)$ that is symmetric in field $H$, and remains finite as $H\to 0$. The time-reversal violating signal suggests that, below $T_{co}$, vortices of one sign are spontaneously created to relieve interlayer phase frustration.
In this review we present results of our theoretical study of charge and spin ordering in strongly correlated electron systems obtained within various generalizations of the Falicov-Kimball model. The primary goal of this study was to identify crucial interactions that lead to the stabilization of various types of charge ordering in these systems, like the axial striped ordering, diagonal striped ordering, phase-separated ordering, phase-segregated ordering, etc. Among the major interactions that come into account, we have examined the effect of local Coulomb interaction between localized and …
We report on a thermoelectric investigation of the stripe and superconducting phases of the cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ near the $x=1/8$ doping known to host stable stripes. We use the doping and magnetic field dependence of field-symmetric Nernst effect features to delineate the phenomenology of these phases. Our measurements are consistent with prior reports of time-reversal symmetry breaking signatures above the superconducting $T_{\rm c}$, and crucially detect a sharp, robust, field-invariant peak at the stripe charge order temperature, $T_{\rm {\scriptscriptstyle CO}}$. Our observ…
We have performed an exact diagonalization study of up to N=12 interacting electrons on a disk at filling $ν={1/3}$ for both Coulomb and $V_1$ short-range interaction for which Laughlin wave function is the exact solution. For Coulomb interaction and $N\geq 10$ we find persistent radial oscillations in electron density, which are not captured by the Laughlin wave function. Our results srongly suggest formation of a chiral edge striped phase in quantum Hall systems. The amplitude of the charge density oscillations decays slowly, perhaps as a square root of the distance from the edge; thus the s…
We report a detailed study of a model Hamiltonian which exhibits a rich interplay of geometrical spin frustration, strong electronic correlations, and charge ordering. The character of the insulating phase depends on the magnitude of Delta/|t| and on the sign of t. We find a Mott insulator for Delta >> U >> |t|; a charge transfer insulator for U >> Δ>> |t|; and a correlated covalent insulator for U >> Δ~ |t|. The charge transfer insulating state is investigated using a strong coupling expansion. The frustration of the triangular lattice can lead to antiferromagnetism or ferromagnetism dependin…
Projector Quantum-Monte-Carlo Method is used to examine effects of the spin-independent $U_{fd}$ as well as spin-dependent $J_z$ Coulomb interaction between the localized $f$ and itinerant $d$ electrons on the stability of various types of charge/spin ordering and superconducting correlations in the spin-one-half Falicov-Kimball model with Hund and Hubbard coupling. The model is studied for a wide range of $f$ and $d$-electron concentrations and it is found that the interband interactions $U_{fd}$ and $J_z$ stabilize three basic types of charge/spin ordering, and namely, (i) the axial striped …
Recently, the experimental results by the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy suggested that an additional strong nearest neighbor attraction in the Hubbard model might be significant to describe the properties of doped cuprates more accurately. The stripe-ordered patterns, formed by the inhomogeneous distribution of spin, charge and pairing correlations in the CuO$_{2}$ planes, is a known feature of doped cuprates. In this work, the effect of the nearest neighbor attraction and the stripe phase are examined by using the constrained path quantum Monte Carlo method within the repulsive Hu…
The high-temperature superconducting cuprates are governed by intertwined striped magnetic and charge orders in addition to superconductivity. Remarkably similar behavior has also been seen in numerical calculations for the Hubbard model describing the copper-oxygen layers in these materials. Finite cluster methods typically find that spin and charge stripe order dominates, while embedded quantum cluster methods, which access the thermodynamic limit, often conclude that superconductivity does. Here, we report the observation of fluctuating spin and charge stripes in an embedded cluster calcula…
We calculate the influence of transverse fluctuations on the longitudinal dynamics in the striped phase of cuprates by using the bosonization technique. We find that a charge density wave instability can arise if the stripe is quarter filled and the underlying lattice potential has a zigzag symmetry. Our results explain why static stripes are experimentally observed in underdoped La_{2-x-y}Nd_ySr_xCuO_4 exactly at the onset of the low-temperature-tetragonal transition.
Striped phases in which spin and charge separate into different regions in the material have been proposed to account for the unusual properties of the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. The driving force for a striped phase is the charge distribution, which self-organizes itself into linear regions. In the highest $T_c$ materials such regions are not static but fluctuate in time. Neutrons, having no charge, can not directly observe these fluctuations but they can be observed indirectly by their effect on the phonons. Neutron scattering measurements have been made using a specialized techniqu…
We study the electronic structure within a system of phase-decoupled one-dimensional superconductors coexisting with stripe spin and charge density wave order. This system has a nodal Fermi surface (Fermi arc) in the form of a hole pocket and an antinodal pseudogap. The spectral function in the antinodes is approximately particle-hole symmetric contrary to the gapped regions just outside the pocket. We find that states at the Fermi energy are extended whereas states near the pseudogap energy have localization lengths as short as the inter-stripe spacing. We consider pairing which has either lo…
We show anisotropy of the dipole interaction between magnetic atoms or polar molecules can stabilize new quantum phases in an optical lattice. Using a well controlled numerical method based on the tensor network algorithm, we calculate phase diagram of the resultant effective Hamiltonian in a two-dimensional square lattice - an anisotropic Hubbard model of hard-core bosons with attractive interaction in one direction and repulsive interaction in the other direction. Besides the conventional superfluid and the Mott insulator states, we find the striped and the checkerboard charge density wave s…
We study the formation of inhomogeneous order in the Einstein-Maxwell-axion system, dual to a 2+1 dimensional field theory that exhibits a spontaneously generated current density, momentum density and modulated scalar operator. Below the critical temperature, the Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole becomes unstable and stripes form in the bulk and on the boundary. The bulk geometry possesses striking geometrical features, including a modulated horizon that tends to pinch off as T -> 0. On a domain of fixed length, we find a second order phase transition to the striped solution in each of the gra…
The interplay of charge orders with superconductivity in underdoped cuprates at high magnetic fields ($H$) is an open question, and even the value of the upper critical field ($H_{c2}$), a measure of the strength of superconductivity, has been the subject of a long-term debate. We combined three complementary transport techniques on underdoped La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with a "striped" charge order and a low $H=0$ transition temperature $T_{c}^{0}$, to establish the $T-H$ phase diagram and reveal the ground states in CuO$_2$ planes: a superconductor, a wide regime of superconduct…
We show that the valence electrons of Ba3NaRu2O9, which has a quasi-molecular structure, completely crystallize below 210 K. Using an extended Hubbard model, we show that the charge ordering instability results from long-range Coulomb interactions. However, orbital ordering, metal-metal bonding and formation of a partial spin gap enforce the magnitude of the charge separation. The striped charge order and frustrated hcp lattice of Ru2O9 dimers lead to competition with a quasi-degenerate charge-melted phase under photo-excitation at low temperature. Our results establish a broad class of simple…
A number of spectacular experimental anomalies\cite{li-2007,fujita-2005} have recently been discovered in certain cuprates, notably {\LBCO} and {\LNSCO}, which exhibit unidirectional spin and charge order (known as ``stripe order''). We have recently proposed to interpret these observations as evidence for a novel ``striped superconducting'' state, in which the superconducting order parameter is modulated in space, such that its average is precisely zero. Here, we show that thermal melting of the striped superconducting state can lead to a number of unusual phases, of which the most novel is a…
The emerging field of complex oxide interfaces is generically built on one of the most celebrated substrates - strontium titanate (SrTiO3). This material hosts a range of phenomena, including ferroelasticity, incipient ferroelectricity, and most puzzlingly, contested giant piezoelectricity. Although these properties may markedly influence the oxide interfaces, especially on microscopic length scales, the lack of local probes capable of studying such buried systems has left their effects largely unexplored. Here we use a scanning charge detector - a nanotube single-electron transistor - to noni…
We study the zero temperature phase diagram of hardcore bosons on the dual of the bowtie lattice. Two types of striped diagonal long-range order (striped order I and striped order II) are discussed. A state with type-II striped order and superfluidity is found, even without nearest-neighbor repulsion. The emergence of such a state is due to the inhomogeneity and the anisotropy of the lattice structure. However, neither the translational symmetry nor the symmetry between sublattices of the original lattice is broken. In this paper, we restrict a 'solid state' of lattice bosons as a diagonal lon…
Ordered electronic phases are intimately related to emerging phenomena such as high Tc superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. The coupling of electronic charge with other degrees of freedom such as lattice and spin are of central interest in correlated systems. Their correlations have been intensively studied from femtosecond to picosecond time scales, while the dynamics of ordered electronic phases beyond nanoseconds are usually assumed to follow a trivia thermally driven recovery. Here, we report an unusual slowing down of the recovery of an electronic phase across a first-order p…
The ground state of a hole-doped t-t'-J ladder with four legs favors a striped charge distribution. Spin excitation from the striped ground state is known to exhibit incommensurate spin excitation near q=(pi,pi) along the leg direction (qx direction). However, an outward dispersion from the incommensurate position toward q=(0,pi) is strong in intensity, inconsistent with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiment in hole-doped cuprates. Motivated by this inconsistency, we use the t-t'-J model with m x n=96 lattice sites by changing lattice geometry from four-leg (24x4) to rectangle (12x8) s…
Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with selective near- and mid-infrared photon excitations, we investigate the femtosecond dynamics of the charge density wave (CDW) phase in 1$T$-TiSe$_2$, as well as the dynamics of CDW fluctuations at 240 K. In the CDW phase, we observe the coherent oscillation of the CDW amplitude mode. At 240 K, we single out an ultrafast component in the recovery of the CDW correlations, which we explain as the manifestation of electron-hole correlations. Our momentum-resolved study of femtosecond electron dynamics supports a mechanism for the CDW p…
We consider two strongly correlated two-component quantum systems, consisting of quantum mobile particles and classical immobile particles. The both systems are described by Falicov-Kimball-like Hamiltonians on a square lattice, extended by direct short-range interactions between the immobile particles. In the first system the mobile particles are spinless fermions while in the second one they are hardcore bosons. We construct rigorously ground-state phase diagrams of the both systems in the strong-coupling regime and at half-filling. Two main conclusions are drawn. Firstly, short-range intera…
The spin-one-half Falicov-Kimball model with spin-dependent on-site interaction between localized ($f$) and itinerant ($d$) electrons is studied by small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations and a well-controlled approximative method in two dimensions. The results obtained are used to categorize the ground-state configurations according to common features (charge and spin ordering) for all $f$ and $d$ electron concentrations ($n_f$ and $n_d$) on finite square lattices. It is shown that only a few configuration types form the basic structure of the charge phase diagram in the $n_f-n_d$ pl…
Ground-state properties of layered nickelates are investigated based on the orbital-degenerate Hubbard model coupled with lattice distortions, by using umerical techniques. The Néel state composed of spin S=1 ions is confirmed in the undoped limit x=0. At x=1/2, novel antiferromagnetic states, called CE- and E-type phases, are found by increasing the Hund's coupling. (3 x^2 - r^2 / 3 y^2 - r^2)-type orbital ordering is predicted to occur in a checkerboard-type charge-ordered state. At x=1/3, both Coulombic and phononic interactions are found to be important, since the former stabilizes the spi…
Recent STM experiments reveal niobium diselenide to support domains of striped (1Q) charge order side-by-side with its better-known triangular (3Q) phase, suggesting that small variations in local strain may induce a quantum phase transition between the two. We use a theoretical model of the charge order in NbSe$_2$, based on a strong momentum- and orbital-dependent electron-phonon coupling, to study the effect of uniaxial strain. We find that as little as $0.1\%$ anisotropic shift in phonon energies breaks the threefold symmetry in favor of a 1Q state, in agreement with the experimental resul…
Ab initio band theory including correlations due to intra-atomic repulsion is applied to study charge disproportionation and charge- and spin-ordering in insulating Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_2$. Various ordering patterns (zigzag and two striped) for four-Co supercells are analyzed before focusing on the observed "out-of-phase stripe" pattern of antiferromagnetic Co$^{4+}$ spins along charge-ordered stripes. This pattern relieves frustration and shows distinct analogies with the cuprate layers: a bipartite lattice of antialigned spins, with axes at 90 degree angles. Substantial distinctions with cuprates …
Striped phases, in which spin, charge, and pairing correlations vary inhomogeneously in the CuO_2 planes, are a known experimental feature of cuprate superconductors, and are also found in a variety of numerical treatments of the two dimensional Hubbard Hamiltonian. In this paper we use determinant Quantum Monte Carlo to show that if a stripe density pattern is imposed on the model, the d-wave pairing vertex is significantly enhanced. We attribute this enhancement to an increase in antiferromagnetic order which is caused by the appearence of more nearly half-filled regions when the doped holes…
In several strongly correlated electron systems, defects, charge and local lattice distortions are found to show complex inhomogeneous spatial distributions. There is growing evidence that such inhomogeneity plays a fundamental role in unique functionality of quantum complex materials. La1.72Sr0.28NiO4 is a prototypical strongly correlated material showing spin striped order associated with lattice and charge modulations. In this work we present the spatial distribution of the spin organization by applying micro X-ray diffraction to La1.72Sr0.28NiO4, mapping the spin-density-wave order below t…
Studies on the interplay between the charge order and the $d$-wave superconductivity in the copper-oxide high $T_{\rm c}$ superconductors are reviewed with a special emphasis on the exploration based on the unconventional concept of the electron fractionalization and its consequences supported by solutions of high-accuracy quantum many-body solvers. Severe competitions between the superconducting states and the charge inhomogeneity including the charge/spin striped states revealed by the quantum many-body solvers are first addressed for the Hubbard models and then for the {\it ab initio} Hamil…
The dynamics of an order parameter's amplitude and phase determines the collective behaviour of novel states emerged in complex materials. Time- and momentum-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy, by virtue of its ability to measure material properties at atomic and electronic time scales and create excited states not accessible by the conventional means can decouple entangled degrees of freedom by visualizing their corresponding dynamics in the time domain. Here, combining time-resolved femotosecond optical and resonant x-ray diffraction measurements on striped La1.75Sr0.25NiO4, we reveal unforese…
We present studies of the electronic structure of La2-xBaxCuO4, a system where the superconductivity is strongly suppressed as static spin and charge orders or "stripes" develop near the doping level of x=1/8. Using angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy, we detect an energy gap at the Fermi surface with magnitude consistent with d-wave symmetry and with linear density of states, vanishing only at four nodal points, even when superconductivity disappears at x=1/8. Thus, the non-superconducting, "striped" state at x=1/8 is consistent with a phase incoherent d-wave superc…
We show, using density matrix renormalization group calculations complemented by field theoretic arguments, that the spin gapped phase of the one dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model exhibits quasi-long range superconducting correlations {\it only} at a non-zero momentum. The local correlations in this phase resemble those of the pair density wave state which was recently proposed to describe the phenomenology of the striped ordered high temperature superconductor {La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$% CuO$_4$}, in which the spin, charge, and superconducting orders are strongly intertwined.
We study the non-equilibrium structural dynamics of the incommensurate and nearly-commensurate charge-density wave phases in 1T-TaS$_2$. Employing ultrafast low-energy electron diffraction (ULEED) with 1 ps temporal resolution, we investigate the ultrafast quench and recovery of the CDW-coupled periodic lattice distortion. Sequential structural relaxation processes are observed by tracking the intensities of main lattice as well as satellite diffraction peaks as well as the diffuse scattering background. Comparing distinct groups of diffraction peaks, we disentangle the ultrafast quench of the…
We present first systematic studies of the photoinduced phase transition from the ground charge density wave (CDW) state to the normal metallic (M) state in the prototype quasi-1D CDW system K0.3MoO3. Ultrafast non-thermal CDW melting is achieved at the absorbed energy density that corresponds to the electronic energy difference between the metallic and CDW states. The results imply that on the sub-picosecond timescale when melting and subsequent initial recovery of the electronic order takes place the lattice remains unperturbed.
We show that in Pr$ _{0.5} $La$ _{0.2} $Ca$ _{0.3} $MnO$ _{3} $/YBa$ _{2} $Cu$ _{3} $O$ _{7} $ (PLCMO/YBCO) multilayers the low temperature state of YBCO is very resistive and resembles the one of a granular superconductor or a frustrated Josephson-junction network. Notably, a coherent superconducting response can be restored with a large magnetic field which also suppresses the charge-orbital order in PLCMO. This coincidence suggests that the granular superconducting state of YBCO is induced by the charge-orbital order of PLCMO. The coupling mechanism and the nature of the induced inhomogeneo…
The ground state of the t-t'-J ladder with four legs favors a striped charge distribution for the parameters corresponding to hole-doped cuprate superconductors. We investigate the dynamical spin and charge structure factors of the model by using the dynamical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and clarify the influence of the stripe on the structure factors. The dynamical charge structure factor along the momentum direction from q=(0,0) to (pi,0) clearly shows low-energy excitations corresponding to the stripe order in hole doping. On the other hand, the stripe order weakens in elect…
Charge-density-wave order in a solid can be temporarily "melted" by a strong laser pulse. Here we use the discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equation on a cubic lattice to simulate the recovery of the CDW long-range phase coherence following such a pulse. Our simulations indicate that the recovery process is dramatically slowed down by the three-dimensional topological defects - CDW dislocations - created as a result of strongly nonequilibrium heating and cooling of the system. Overall, the simulated CDW recovery was found to be remarkably reminiscent of a recent pump-probe experiment in LaTe$_3$.
Electronic orderings of charges, orbitals and spins are observed in many strongly correlated electron materials, and revealing their dynamics is a critical step toward understanding the underlying physics of important emergent phenomena. Here we use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to probe the dynamics of antiferromagnetic spin ordering in the manganite Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ following ultrafast photo-exitation. Our studies reveal a glass-like recovery of the spin ordering and a crossover in the dimensionality of the restoring interaction from quasi-1D at low pum…
Stacking two graphene layers twisted by the 'magic angle' $θ\approx 1.1^\circ$ generates flat energy bands, which in turn catalyzes various strongly correlated phenomena depending on filling and sample details. At charge neutrality, transport measurements reveal superficially mundane semimetallicity (as expected when correlations are weak) in some samples yet robust insulation in others. We propose that the interplay between interactions and disorder admits either behavior, even when the system is strongly correlated and locally gapped. Specifically, we argue that strong interactions supplemen…
In underdoped cuprates, the interplay of the pseudogap, superconductivity, and charge and spin ordering can give rise to exotic quantum states, including the pair density wave (PDW), in which the superconducting (SC) order parameter is oscillatory in space. However, the evidence for a PDW state remains inconclusive and its broader relevance to cuprate physics is an open question. To test the interlayer frustration, the crucial component of the PDW picture, we performed transport measurements on La$_{1.7}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.1}$CuO$_{4}$ and La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_{4}$, cuprates with…
