Neutrino physics is nowadays receiving more and more attention as a possible source of information for the long standing problem of new Physics beyond the Standard Model. The recent measurements of the third mixing angle $θ_{13}$ in the standard mixing oscillation scenario encourage to pursue the still missing results on the leptonic CP violation and the absolute neutrino masses. However, several puzzling and incomplete measurements are in place which deserve an exhaustive evaluation and study. We will report about the present situation of the muon disappearance measurements at small $L/E$ in the context of the current CERN project to revitalize the neutrino field in Europe and the search for sterile neutrinos. We will then illustrate the achievements that a double muon spectrometer can attain in terms of discovery of new neutrino states, performing a newly developed analysis.
We study the feasibility of performing a $ν_μ$ disappearance long-baseline experiment using a neutrino beam coming from muon decays. The advantage of such a technique with respect to the production of neutrino beams from pions is that in a muon decay both muon and electron neutrinos are produced in the same quantity. In case of $ν_μ\toν_{τ,s}$ oscillations, the $ν_e$ charged current (CC) events can be used as a control sample, to predict in situ the $ν_μ$ rates, thus reducing the systematics due to the knowledge of the neutrino flux, which is the main source of uncertainties for disappearance …
The MINOS/MINOS+ experiment has recently reported stringent limits on $ν_μ$ disappearance that appear to rule out the 3+1 sterile neutrino model. However, in this paper we wish to point out problems associated with the MINOS/MINOS+ analysis. In particular, we find that MINOS/MINOS+ has either underestimated their systematic errors and/or has obtained evidence for physics beyond the 3-neutrino paradigm. Either case would invalidate the limits on $ν_μ$ disappearance.
Recently a new method for determining the neutrino mass hierarchy by comparing the effective values of the atmospheric Δm^2 measured in the electron neutrino disappearance channel, Δm^2(ee), with the one measured in the muon neutrino disappearance channel, Δm^2(μμ), was proposed. If Δm^2(ee) is larger (smaller) than Δm^2(μμ) the hierarchy is of the normal (inverted) type. We re-examine this proposition in the light of two very high precision measurements: Δm^2(μμ) that may be accomplished by the phase II of the Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment, for example, and Δm^2(ee) that can be envisaged …
The measurements of the fluxes of atmospheric neutrinos give evidence for the disappearance of muon neutrinos. The determination of the dependence of the disappearance probability on the neutrino energy and trajectory allows in principle to establish unambiguosly the existence of neutrino oscillations. Alternative mechanisms for the disappearance of the neutrinos have been proposed, but do not provide a viable description of the data, if one includes both events where the neutrinos interact in the detector and $ν$-induced upward going muons. The proposed mechanisms differ in the energy depende…
With the 1998 announcement of new evidence for muon neutrino disappearance observed by the Super-Kamiokande experiment, the more than a decade old atmospheric neutrino anomaly moved from a possible indication for neutrino oscillations to an almost inescapable implication. The evidence from all experiments is reviewed, and indications are presented that the oscillations are probably between muon and tau neutrinos with nearly maximal mixing. Implications and future directions in neutrino oscillations research are discussed.
The radiative decay of muon-neutrinos in matter with a scheme of mass-degenerate neutrinos could be the common origin of the appearance of anti-electron-neutrinos at LSND and the disappearance of muons-neutrinos at SuperKamiokande. With the decay probability fixed by the LSND signal, the deficit of atmospheric neutrinos can be satisfactorily reproduced.
We present a quantitative appraisal of the physics potential for neutrino experiments at the front-end of a muon storage ring. We estimate the forseeable accuracy in the determination of several interesting observables, and explore the consequences of these measurements. We discuss the extraction of individual quark and antiquark densities from polarized and unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering. In particular we study the implications for the undertanding of the nucleon spin structure. We assess the determination of alpha_s from scaling violation of structure functions, and from sum rules, an…
We discuss short-baseline electron and muon neutrino disappearance searches into sterile neutrinos at a Very Low Energy Neutrino Factory (VLENF) with a muon energy between about two and four GeV. A lesson learned from reactor experiments, such as Double Chooz and Daya Bay, is to use near and far detectors with identical technologies to reduce the systematical errors. We therefore derive the physics results from a combined near-far detector fit and illustrate that uncertainties on cross sections x efficiencies can be eliminated in a self-consistent way. We also include the geometry of the setup…
Motivated by the recent anomaly in the muon neutrino and anti-muon neutrino disappearance experiments, we consider a long-range interaction with an extremely light gauge boson and extraordinarily weak coupling. A long-range interaction, consistent with current bounds, could have very pronounced effects on atmospheric neutrino disappearance that will be studied with the IceCube DeepCore array, currently in operation, and can have a significant effect on future high-precision long-baseline oscillation experiments.
Neutrinos are allowed to mix and to oscillate among their flavor. Muon and tau in particular oscillate at largest values.Last Minos experiment claimed possible difference among their matter and anti-matter masses, leading to a first violation of the most believed CPT symmetry.Isotropically born atmospheric muon neutrino at 20-80 GeV, while up-going, they might be partially suppressed by mixing in analogy to historical SuperKamiokande muon neutrino disappearance into tau, leading to large scale anisotropy signals. Here we show an independent muon rate foreseen in Deep Core based on observed SK …
"KPipe" is a proposed experiment which will study muon neutrino disappearance for a sensitive test of the $Δm^2\sim1 \mathrm{eV}^2$ anomalies, possibly indicative of one or more sterile neutrinos. The experiment is to be located at the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Facility's spallation neutron source, which represents the world's most intense source of charged kaon decay-at-rest monoenergetic (236 MeV) muon neutrinos. The detector vessel, designed to measure the charged current interactions of these neutrinos, will be 3 m in diameter and 120 m long, extending radially at a distance of 32 …
Updating our previous measurements with new data and analysis modifications, we report preliminary results on the energy-dependent deficit of muon neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI beam as observed with the MINOS Far Detector located 735 km away in the Soudan Underground Laboratory. From an exposure of 2.50x10^20 protons on target, we observe 563 charged-current nu_mu interaction candidates in the Far Detector, where 738+/-30 events are expected in the absence of neutrino oscillations. We have analyzed these data assuming two-flavor nu_mu to nu_tau oscillations. From a simultaneous fit to the r…
The NESSiE Collaboration has been setup to undertake a conclusive experiment to clarify the {\em muon--neutrino disappearance} measurements at short baselines in order to put severe constraints to models with more than the three--standard neutrinos. To this aim the current FNAL--Booster neutrino beam for a Short--Baseline experiment was carefully evaluated by considering the use of magnetic spectrometers at two sites, near and far ones. The detector locations were studied, together with the achievable performances of two OPERA--like spectrometers. The study was constrained by the availability …
The moderately large measured value of theta13 signals a departure from the approximate two-flavour oscillation framework. As a consequence, the relation between the value of theta23 in nature, and the mixing angle measured in muon neutrino disappearance experiments is non-trivial. In this paper, we calculate this relation analytically. We also derive the correct conversion between degenerate values of theta23 in the two octants. Through simulations of a muon neutrino disappearance experiment, we show that there are observable consequences of not using the correct relation in calculating oscil…
The NESSiE experiment is designed to perform an accurate measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance at small L/E, in order to severely constrain models with more than three-standard neutrinos, or even determine for the first time the presence of a new kind of neutrino oscillation. NESSiE is a Short-Baseline experiment with magnetic spectrometers at two different sites on the FNAL-Booster neutrino beam. The experiment would allow to definitively solve the existing tension of the muon-neutrino disappearance result with the appearance and disappearance "anomalies" at eV mass scale, by spanning on…
We discuss and quantify different possibilities to determine matter effects, the value and the sign of $Delta m^2_{31}$, as well as the magnitude of $\sin^2 2θ_{13}$ in very long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We study neutrino oscillation at a neutrino factory in the $ν_μ\toν_μ$ disappearance and $ν_e\toν_μ$ appearance channels with and without muon charge identification. One possibility is to analyze the $ν_e\toν_μ$ appearance channels leading to wrong sign muon events, which requires however very good muon charge identification. Without charge identification it is still possible…
Anomalies in short baseline experiments have been interpreted as evidence for additional neutrino mass states with large mass splittings from the known, active flavors. This explanation mandates a corresponding signature in the muon neutrino disappearance channel, which has yet to be observed. Searches for muon neutrino disappearance at the IceCube neutrino telescope presently provide the strongest limits in the space of mixing angles for eV-scale sterile neutrinos. This proceeding for the Very Large Volume Neutrino Telescopes (VLVnT) Workshop summarizes the IceCube analyses that have searched…

Discussing the recent MINOS data on muon anti-neutrino disappearance and the MiniBooNE data on muon anti-neutrino to electron anti-neutrino oscillation, we show that the while the respective best fits are inconsistent with each other, significant overlap of allowed regions does exist. Assuming only three neutrino species, the data indicates a discrepancy of mass levels and mixing angles between the neutrino and the antineutrino sectors. We show that the existing data can be reconciled with a model of explicit CPT violation in the neutrino sector and estimate the magnitude of the required viola…
To be able to achieve their physics goals, future neutrino-oscillation experiments will need to reconstruct the neutrino energy with very high accuracy. In this work, we analyze how the energy reconstruction may be affected by realistic detection capabilities, such as energy resolutions, efficiencies, and thresholds. This allows us to estimate how well the detector performance needs to be determined a priori in order to avoid a sizable bias in the measurement of the relevant oscillation parameters. We compare the kinematic and calorimetric methods of energy reconstruction in the context of two…
If the hints for light sterile neutrinos from short-baseline anomalies are to be taken seriously, global fits indicate active-sterile mixings of a magnitude comparable to the known reactor mixing. We therefore study the conditions under which the active-sterile and reactor mixings could have the same origin in an underlying flavour model. As a starting point, we use $μ-τ$ symmetry in the active neutrino sector, which (for three neutrinos) yields a zero reactor neutrino angle and a maximal atmospheric one. We demonstrate that adding one sterile neutrino can change this setting, so that the acti…
The indications in favor of short-baseline neutrino oscillations, which require the existence of one or more sterile neutrinos, are reviewed. In the framework of 3+1 neutrino mixing, which is the simplest extension of the standard three-neutrino mixing which can partially explain the data, there is a strong tension in the interpretation of the data, mainly due to an incompatibility of the results of appearance and disappearance experiments. In the framework of 3+2 neutrino mixing, CP violation in short-baseline experiments can explain the difference between MiniBooNE neutrino and antineutrino …
Solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies are described by bimaximal mixing of three neutrinos. Neutrino oscillations in appearance nu_e <--> nu_mu,nu_tau and in disappearance nu_e long baseline and atmospheric experiments are sensitive to deviations from the ideal bimaximal mixing. It is suggested that these deviations may be dominated by a rotation in the electron--muon plane of the generation space. Simple seesaw models are described supporting this idea. The rotation angle is estimated from Fritzsch's relation. Predictions are presented for oscillations in long baseline experiments, for sol…

We investigate possible tests of CPT invariance on the level of event rates at neutrino factories. We do not assume any specific model but phenomenological differences in the neutrino-antineutrino masses and mixing angles in a Lorentz invariance preserving context, such as it could be induced by physics beyond the Standard Model. We especially focus on the muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance channels in order to obtain constraints on the neutrino-antineutrino mass and mixing angle differences; we found, for example, that the sensitivity $|m_3 - \bar{m}_3| \lesssim 1.9 \cdot 10^{-4} \m…
Muon neutrino disappearance measurements at NO$ν$A suggest that maximal $θ_{23}$ is excluded at the 2.6$σ$ CL. This is in mild tension with T2K data which prefer maximal mixing. Considering that NO$ν$A has a much longer baseline than T2K, we point out that the apparent departure from maximal mixing in NO$ν$A may be a consequence of nonstandard neutrino propagation in matter.

We especially focus on the muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance channels in order to obtain constraints on the neutrino-antineutrino mass and mixing angle differences. In a typical neutrino factory setup simulation, we find, for example, that $|m_3 - \bar{m}_3| \l…
We investigate invisible decays of the third neutrino mass eigenstate in future accelerator neutrino experiments using muon-decay beams such as MuOn-decay MEdium baseline NeuTrino beam experiment (MOMENT). MOMENT has an outstanding performance to measure the deficit or excess in the spectra caused by neutrino decays, especially in $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ disappearance channels. Such an experiment will improve the constraints of the neutrino lifetime $τ_3$. Compared with exclusion limits in the current accelerator neutrino experiments T2K and NOvA under the stable $ν$ assumption, we expect that MOM…
We show that by combining high precision measurements of the atmospheric delta m^2 in both the electron and muon neutrino (or anti-neutrino) disappearance channels one can determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. The required precision is a very challenging fraction of one per cent for both measurements. At even higher precision, sensitivity to the cosine of the CP violating phase is also possible. This method for determining the mass hierarchy of the neutrino sector does not depend on matter effects.
Several neutrino experiments have reported results that are potentially inconsistent with our current understanding of the lepton sector. A candidate solution to these so-called short-baseline anomalies is postulating the existence of new, eV-scale, mostly sterile neutrinos that mix with the active neutrinos. This hypothesis, however, is strongly disfavored once one considers all neutrino data, especially those that constrain the disappearance of muon and electron neutrinos at short-baselines. Here, we show that if the sterile-active mixing parameters depend on the energy-scales that character…
Over the last several years, our understanding of neutrino oscillations has developed significantly due to the long-baseline measurements of muon-neutrino disappearance and muon-to-electron-neutrino appearance at the T2K and NOvA experiments. However, when interpreted under the standard-three-massive-neutrinos paradigm, a tension has emerged between the two experiments' data. Here, we examine whether this tension can be alleviated when a fourth, very light neutrino is added to the picture. Specifically, we focus on the scenario in which this new neutrino has a mass similar to, or even lighter …
The neutrino community is convinced that if the LMA solution is indeed correct, the prospects for next-generation, long-baseline neutrino experiments are very exciting. In this work we will argue that the prospects are not less exiting if the answer to the solar neutrino puzzle lies in the LOW region. For this purpose we explore the oscillation probabilities which are accessible to experiments which employ conventional neutrino beams. We consider the electron (anti)neutrino appearance channel, which provides information regarding not only the small $U_{e3}$-element of the leptonic mixing matri…
In study of muon neutrino disappearance at 810 km, the NOvA experiment finds flavor mixing of the atmospheric sector to deviate from maximal ($\sin^2θ_{23} = 0.5$) by 2.6 $σ$. The result is in tension with the 295-km baseline measurements of T2K which are consistent with maximal mixing. We propose that $θ_{23}$ is in fact maximal, and that the disagreement is harbinger of environmentally-induced decoherence. The departure from maximal mixing can be accounted for by an energy-independent decoherence of strength $Γ= (2.3 \pm 1.1) \times 10^{-23}$ GeV.
The concept of a very long baseline neutrino experiment with quasi monochromatic neutrino beam and very large area underground detector is discussed. The detector could be placed in the existing 20 km tunnel at IHEP, Protvino. The High Intensity Proton Accelerators (HIPA) which are planned to be built in Japan (JAERI-KEK, baseline of 7000 km) and Germany (GSI, baseline of 2000 km) as well as the Main Injector at Fermilab (7600 km) are considered as possible sources of neutrino beams. The oscillations are analysed in the three-neutrino scheme taking into account terrestrial matter effects. In t…
We propose an experiment to test the hypothesis that the reported anomaly on atmospheric neutrino fluxes is due to nu_mu <-> nu_x oscillations. It will rely both on a disappearance technique, exploiting the method of the dependence of the event rate on L/E, which was recently shown to be effective for detection of neutrino oscillation and measurement of the oscillation parameters, and on an appearance technique, looking for an excess of muon-less events at high energy produced by upward-going tau neutrinos. The detector will consist of iron planes interleaved by limited streamer tubes. The tot…
The impacts of the light sterile neutrino hypothesis in particle physics and cosmology are reviewed. The observed short baseline neutrino anomalies challenging the standard explanation of neutrino oscillations within the framework of three active neutrinos are addressed. It is shown that they can be interpreted as the experimental hints pointing towards the existence of sterile neutrino at the eV scale. While the electron neutrino appearance and disappearance data are in favor of such a sterile neutrino, the muon disappearance data disfavor it, which gives rise to a strong appearance-disappear…
We study the optimization of a neutrino factory with respect to non-standard neutral current neutrino interactions, and compare the results to those obtained without non-standard interactions. We discuss the muon energy, baselines, and oscillation channels as degrees of freedom. Our conclusions are based on both analytical calculations and on a full numerical simulation of the neutrino factory setup proposed by the international design study (IDS-NF). We consider all possible non-standard parameters, and include their complex phases. We identify the impact of the different parameters on the go…
A generalized phenomenological (3 + 2 + 1)-model with three active and three sterile neutrinos is considered for the calculation of the neutrino oscillation characteristics at normal mass hierarchy of active neutrinos and significant splitting between the mass of one sterile neutrino and the masses of other two sterile neutrinos. A new parametrization and a certain form of the general neutrino mixing matrix for active and sterile neutrinos are suggested taking into account the possible violation of CP invariance in the lepton sector. The test values of the neutrino masses and the mixing parame…
We discuss the experimental requirements for a mass hierarchy measurement for $θ_{13}=0$ using muon neutrino disappearance. We find that a specially optimized neutrino factory at $L \simeq 6 \,000 \, \mathrm{km}$ could do this measurement using extreme luminosities. In particular, we do not require charge identification for this purpose. In order to measure the mass hierarchy for more adequate luminosities, we explore the capabilities of low energy narrow band off-axis beams, which have relatively more events at low energies. We find that, in this case, the energy resolution of the detector qu…
The MiniBooNE experiment has observed a significant excess of electron neutrinos in a muon neutrino beam at source-detector distances too short to be compatible with standard neutrino oscillations. The most straightforward explanation for this signal in terms of oscillations between Standard Model neutrinos and a new, sterile, neutrino, is disfavored by null results from experiments looking for muon neutrino disappearance. Here, we discuss the possibility that MiniBooNE data are instead explained by a sterile neutrino that decays quickly back into active neutrinos plus a light boson. The flavo…
A MINOS result seemed to hint a different anti-neutrino mass splitting and mixing angle with respect to the neutrino ones, offering a hint for a CPT violation in lepton sector. However more recent MINOS data reduced the neutrino-antineutrino differences leading to a narrow discrepancy almost compatible with no CPT violation, hard to be disentangled. Moreover last a few years of OPERA activity on tau appearance is still un-probed (one unique event). Both flavor muon-tau mixing, tau appearance and eventual CPT violation disentanglement need more tools to be enhanced. Atmospheric muon neutrino sp…
We study the capabilities of IceCube to search for sterile neutrinos with masses above 10 eV by analyzing its $ν_μ$ disappearance atmospheric neutrino sample. We find that IceCube is not only sensitive to the mixing of sterile neutrinos to muon neutrinos, but also to the more elusive mixing with tau neutrinos through matter effects. The currently released 1-year data shows a mild (around 2$σ$) preference for non-zero sterile mixing, which overlaps with the favoured region for the sterile neutrino interpretation of the ANITA upward shower. Although the null results from CHORUS and NOMAD on $ν_μ…
We perform a comparative analysis of constraints on sterile neutrinos from the Planck experiment and from current and future neutrino oscillation experiments (MINOS, IceCube, SBN). For the first time, we express the Planck constraints on $N_{\rm eff}$ and $m_{\rm eff}^{\rm sterile}$ from the Cosmic Microwave Background in the parameter space used by oscillation experiments using both mass-squared differences and mixing angles. In a model with a single sterile neutrino species and using standard assumptions, we find that the Planck data and the oscillation experiments measuring muon-neutrino di…
Tensions in several phenomenological models grew with experimental results on neutrino/antineutrino oscillations at Short-Baseline (SBL) and with the recent, carefully recomputed, antineutrino fluxes from nuclear reactors. At a refurbished SBL CERN-PS facility an experiment aimed to address the open issues has been proposed [1], based on the technology of imaging in ultra-pure cryogenic Liquid Argon (LAr). Motivated by this scenario a detailed study of the physics case was performed. We tackled specific physics models and we optimized the neutrino beam through a full simulation. Experimental a…
A facility that can deliver beams of electron and muon neutrinos from the decay of a stored muon beam has the potential to unambiguously resolve the issue of the evidence for light sterile neutrinos that arises in short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments and from estimates of the effective number of neutrino flavors from fits to cosmological data. In this paper, we show that the nuSTORM facility, with stored muons of 3.8 GeV/c $\pm$ 10%, will be able to carry out a conclusive muon neutrino appearance search for sterile neutrinos and test the LSND and MiniBooNE experimental signals with …

KM3NeT, currently under construction in the abysses of the Mediterranean Sea, is a distributed research infrastructure that will host a km3-scale neutrino telescope (ARCA) for high-energy neutrino astronomy, and a megaton scale detector (ORCA) for neutrino oscillation studies of atmospheric neutrinos. ORCA is optimised for a measurement of the mass hierarchy, providing a sensitivity of 3σ after 3-4 years. It will also measure the atmospheric mixing parameters $Δm_{32}^2$ and $θ_{23}$ with a precision comparable to the NOvA and T2K experiments using both the muon neutrino disappearance and tau …

Determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy in a reactor neutrino experiment at medium baseline is discussed. Observation of the interference effects between the Δm^2_{31} and Δm^2_{32} oscillations enables a relative measurement independent of the knowledge of the absolute mass-squared difference. With a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector of 3%/\sqrt{E(MeV)} energy resolution, the Daya Bay II Experiment at a baseline of \sim 50 km from reactors of total thermal power 36 GW can determine the mass hierarchy at a confidence level of Δχ^2_{MH} \sim (10-12) (3-3.5 σ) in 6 years after taking int…
The atmospheric neutrino data collected by the IceCube experiment and its low-energy extension DeepCore provide a unique opportunity to probe the neutrino sector of the Standard Model. In the low energy range the experiment have observed neutrino oscillations, and the high energy data are especially sensitive to signatures of new physics in the neutrino sector. In this context, we previously demonstrated the unmatched potential of the experiment to reveal the existence of light sterile neutrinos. The studies are routinely performed in the simplest 3+1 model concentrating on disappearance of mu…
Neutrino oscillations successfully explain the flavor transitions observed in neutrinos produced in natural sources like the center of the sun and the earth atmosphere, and also from man-made sources like reactors and accelerators. These oscillations are driven by two mass-squared differences, solar and atmospheric, at the sub-eV scale. However, longstanding anomalies at short-baselines might imply the existence of new oscillation frequencies at the eV-scale and the possibility of this sterile state(s) to mix with the three active neutrinos. One of the many future neutrino programs that are ex…
As atmospheric neutrinos propagate through the Earth, vacuum-like oscillations are modified by Standard-Model neutral- and charged-current interactions with electrons. Theories beyond the Standard Model introduce heavy, TeV-scale bosons that can produce nonstandard neutrino interactions. These additional interactions may modify the Standard Model matter effect producing a measurable deviation from the prediction for atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The result described in this paper constrains nonstandard interaction parameters, building upon a previous analysis of atmospheric muon-neutrino …
We present a search for a light sterile neutrino using three years of atmospheric neutrino data from the DeepCore detector in the energy range of approximately $10-60~$GeV. DeepCore is the low-energy sub-array of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The standard three-neutrino paradigm can be probed by adding an additional light ($Δm_{41}^2 \sim 1 \mathrm{\ eV^2}$) sterile neutrino. Sterile neutrinos do not interact through the standard weak interaction, and therefore cannot be directly detected. However, their mixing with the three active neutrino states leaves an imprint on the standard atmosph…
