We discuss short-baseline electron and muon neutrino disappearance searches into sterile neutrinos at a Very Low Energy Neutrino Factory (VLENF) with a muon energy between about two and four GeV. A lesson learned from reactor experiments, such as Double Chooz and Daya Bay, is to use near and far detectors with identical technologies to reduce the systematical errors. We therefore derive the physics results from a combined near-far detector fit and illustrate that uncertainties on cross sections x efficiencies can be eliminated in a self-consistent way. We also include the geometry of the setup, i.e., the extension of the decay straight and the muon decay kinematics relevant at the near detector, and we demonstrate that these affect the sensitivities for Delta m^2 > 30 eV^2, where oscillations take place already in the near detector. Compared to appearance searches, we find that the sensitivity depends on the locations of both detectors and the muon energy, where the near detector should be as close as possible to the source, and the far detector at about 500 to 800m. In order to exclude the currently preferred parameter region, at least 10^19 useful muon decays per polarity are needed for E_mu=2 GeV, or, alternatively, a higher muon energy can be used.
The MINOS/MINOS+ experiment has recently reported stringent limits on $ν_μ$ disappearance that appear to rule out the 3+1 sterile neutrino model. However, in this paper we wish to point out problems associated with the MINOS/MINOS+ analysis. In particular, we find that MINOS/MINOS+ has either underestimated their systematic errors and/or has obtained evidence for physics beyond the 3-neutrino paradigm. Either case would invalidate the limits on $ν_μ$ disappearance.
A sterile neutrino is a well motivated minimal new physics model that leaves an imprint in neutrino oscillations. Over the last two decades, a number of hints pointing to a sterile neutrino have emerged, many of which are pointing near $m_4\sim1$ eV. Here we show how MicroBooNE data can be used to search for electron neutrino disappearance using each of their four analysis channels. We find a hint for oscillations with the highest single channel significance of $2.4σ$ (using the Feldman-Cousins approach) coming from the Wire-Cell analysis and a simplified treatment of the experimental systemat…
Anomalies in short baseline experiments have been interpreted as evidence for additional neutrino mass states with large mass splittings from the known, active flavors. This explanation mandates a corresponding signature in the muon neutrino disappearance channel, which has yet to be observed. Searches for muon neutrino disappearance at the IceCube neutrino telescope presently provide the strongest limits in the space of mixing angles for eV-scale sterile neutrinos. This proceeding for the Very Large Volume Neutrino Telescopes (VLVnT) Workshop summarizes the IceCube analyses that have searched…
We present a quantitative, direct comparison of constraints on sterile neutrinos derived from neutrino oscillation experiments and from Planck data, interpreted assuming standard cosmological evolution. We extend a $1+1$ model, which is used to compare exclusions contours at the 95% CL derived from Planck data to those from $ν_{e}$-disappearance measurements, to a $3+1$ model. This allows us to compare the Planck constraints with those obtained through $ν_μ\rightarrowν_{e}$ appearance searches, which are sensitive to more than one active-sterile mixing angle. We find that the cosmological data…
Recent global fits to short-baseline neutrino oscillation data have been performed finding preference for a sterile neutrino solution (3+1) over null. In the most recent iteration, it was pointed out that an unstable sterile neutrino (3+1+decay) may be a better description of the data. This is due to the fact that this model significantly reduces the tension between appearance and disappearance datasets. In this work, we add a one-year IceCube dataset to the global fit obtaining new results for the standard 3+1 and 3+1+decay sterile neutrino scenarios. We find that the 3+1+decay model provides…
We discuss the possibility to explain the anomalies in short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments in terms of sterile neutrinos. We work in a 3+1 framework and pay special attention to recent new data from reactor experiments, IceCube and MINOS+. We find that results from the DANSS and NEOS reactor experiments support the sterile neutrino explanation of the reactor anomaly, based on an analysis that relies solely on the relative comparison of measured reactor spectra. Global data from the $ν_e$ disappearance channel favour sterile neutrino oscillations at the $3σ$ level with $Δm^2_{41} \a…
Several neutrino experiments have reported results that are potentially inconsistent with our current understanding of the lepton sector. A candidate solution to these so-called short-baseline anomalies is postulating the existence of new, eV-scale, mostly sterile neutrinos that mix with the active neutrinos. This hypothesis, however, is strongly disfavored once one considers all neutrino data, especially those that constrain the disappearance of muon and electron neutrinos at short-baselines. Here, we show that if the sterile-active mixing parameters depend on the energy-scales that character…
We address the phenomenology of light sterile neutrinos, with emphasis on short-baseline neutrino oscillations. After a review of the observed short-baseline neutrino oscillation anomalies, we discuss the global fit of the data and the current appearance-disappearance tension. We also review briefly the effects of light sterile neutrinos in $β$ decay, neutrinoless double-$β$ decay and cosmology. Finally, we discuss the future perspective in the search for the effects of eV-scale sterile neutrinos.
Light sterile neutrinos have been motivated by anomalies observed in short-baseline neutrino experiments.Among them, radioactive-source and reactor experiments have provided evidence and constraints, respectively, for electron neutrino disappearance compatible with an eV-scale neutrino. The results from these observations are seemingly in conflict. This letter brings into focus the assumption that the neutrino wave packet can be approximated as a plane wave, which is adopted in all analyses of such experiments. We demonstrate that the damping of oscillations, e.g., due to a finite wave packet …
We review the status of light sterile neutrino searches, motivated by the original Short BaseLine (SBL) anomalies. Here, we discuss how sterile neutrino properties can be constrained by different types of neutrino oscillation experiments (considering appearance or disappearance probes in different oscillation channels) and non-oscillation measurements. These latter include experiments aiming at obtaining a value for the absolute scale of neutrino masses ($β$ decay probes) and the indirect constraints that we could obtain from cosmological observations.
Neutrino telescopes provide strong sensitivity to sterile neutrino oscillations through matter-enhanced oscillation, occurring in the few TeV energy range for eV$^{2}$-scale neutrino mass-squared splittings. Prior searches have focused on $ν_μ$ disappearance, which has a particularly strong sensitivity to the mixing angle $θ_{24}$ via $ν_μ\rightarrowν_s$ transitions. Nowadays, the $ν_μ\rightarrowν_e$ and $ν_μ\rightarrowν_τ$ appearance channels have been considered less promising at neutrino telescopes, due in part to the much smaller target volume for cascades relative to tracks. This work exp…
The impacts of the light sterile neutrino hypothesis in particle physics and cosmology are reviewed. The observed short baseline neutrino anomalies challenging the standard explanation of neutrino oscillations within the framework of three active neutrinos are addressed. It is shown that they can be interpreted as the experimental hints pointing towards the existence of sterile neutrino at the eV scale. While the electron neutrino appearance and disappearance data are in favor of such a sterile neutrino, the muon disappearance data disfavor it, which gives rise to a strong appearance-disappear…
The MiniBooNE experiment has observed a significant excess of electron neutrinos in a muon neutrino beam at source-detector distances too short to be compatible with standard neutrino oscillations. The most straightforward explanation for this signal in terms of oscillations between Standard Model neutrinos and a new, sterile, neutrino, is disfavored by null results from experiments looking for muon neutrino disappearance. Here, we discuss the possibility that MiniBooNE data are instead explained by a sterile neutrino that decays quickly back into active neutrinos plus a light boson. The flavo…
We explore the hypothesis that the unexplained data from LSND and MiniBooNE are evidence for a new, heavy neutrino mass-eigenstate that mixes with the muon-type neutrino and decays into an electron-type neutrino and a new, very light scalar particle. We consider two different decay scenarios, one with Majorana neutrinos, one with Dirac neutrinos; both fit the data equally well. We find a reasonable, albeit not excellent, fit to the data of MiniBooNE and LSND. The decaying-sterile-neutrino hypothesis, however, cleanly evades constraints from disappearance searches and precision measurements of …
Recently the MiniBooNE Collaboration has confirmed its anomalous excess in (anti)muon- to (anti)electron-neutrino oscillation data. Combined with long-standing results from the LSND experiment this amounts to a 6.1 sigma evidence for new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper we develop a framework with 3 active and 3 sterile neutrinos with altered dispersion relations that provides a mechanism to explain these anomalies without being in conflict with the absence of anomalous neutrino disappearance in other neutrino oscillation experiments.
The $\sim 3σ$ discrepancy between the predicted and observed reactor anti-neutrino flux, known as the reactor anti-neutrino anomaly, continues to intrigue. The recent discovery of an unexpected bump in the reactor anti-neutrino spectrum, as well as indications that the flux deficit is different for different fission isotopes seems to disfavour the explanation of the anomaly in terms of sterile neutrino oscillations. We critically review this conclusion in view of all available data on electron (anti)neutrino disappearance. We find that the sterile neutrino hypothesis cannot be rejected based o…
Active-sterile neutrino mixing is known to affect the neutrino oscillation probabilities at both short as well as long-baselines. In particular, constraints on active-sterile neutrino oscillation parameters can be obtained from long-baseline experiments such as T2HK and DUNE. We present here existence of fake solution in the appearance channel for the 3+1 scenario at long-baseline experiments. We show that the appearance probability is same for values of $Δm_{41}^2$ for which the fast oscillations are averaged out and for $Δm_{41}^2=(1/2)Δm_{31}^2$. The fake solution does not appear for the di…
Over the last several years, our understanding of neutrino oscillations has developed significantly due to the long-baseline measurements of muon-neutrino disappearance and muon-to-electron-neutrino appearance at the T2K and NOvA experiments. However, when interpreted under the standard-three-massive-neutrinos paradigm, a tension has emerged between the two experiments' data. Here, we examine whether this tension can be alleviated when a fourth, very light neutrino is added to the picture. Specifically, we focus on the scenario in which this new neutrino has a mass similar to, or even lighter …
We review the status of searches for sterile neutrinos in the $\sim 1$ eV range, with an emphasis on the latest results from short baseline oscillation experiments and how they fit within sterile neutrino oscillation models. We present global fit results to a three-active-flavor plus one-sterile-flavor model (3+1), where we find an improvement of $Δχ^2=35$ for 3 additional parameters compared to a model with no sterile neutrino. This is a 5$σ$ improvement, indicating that an effect that is like that of a sterile neutrino is highly preferred by the data. However we note that separate fits to th…
