The charmonium states at non-zero temperature are studied on anisotropic lattices with 2 dynamical quark flavours. Non-local operators are used to determine the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wavefunctions via both conventional fitting methods and the Maximum Entropy Method. The interquark potential is determined from the solution of the Schrodinger equation, given the NBS wavefunction as input following the HAL QCD method. We observe a temperature dependent potential which becomes steeper as the temperature decreases.
The charmonium potential at non-zero temperature has been studied using gauge configurations with anisotropic lattices and 2+1 dynamical flavors of light sea quarks. We use the HAL QCD time-dependent method developed for the study of nucleon-nucleon potentials. To serve as in-put, local-extended charmonium correlators were calculated. The results are consistent with the expectation that the potential between heavy quarks should become deconfining at high temperatures.
We study charmonium properties below and above $T_c$ up to 1.8$T_c$, on quenched anisotropic lattices. Information of the spectral functions is extracted using the maximum entropy method and the constrained curve fitting. We also calculate the color singlet and averaged free energies and evaluate the charmonium spectrum with the potential model analysis. The relation between the lattice result of the spectral function analysis and the potential model is discussed.
We study hadron properties near the deconfining transition in the finite temperature lattice QCD. This paper focus on the heavy quarkonium states, such as $J/ψ$ meson. We compare the meson correlators above and below $T_c$ and discuss the possibility of the $c\bar{c}$ bound state by observing the wave function.
We present an operational approach to address the in-medium behavior of charmonium and analyze the reliability of maximum entropy method (MEM). We study the dependences of the ratio of correlators to the reconstructed one and the free one on the resonance's width and the continuum's threshold. Furthermore, we discuss the issue of the default model dependence of the spectral function obtained from MEM.
Charmonium systems in two-flavour QCD at non-zero temperature are studied at, and above the deconfining transition. Using anisotropic lattices the MEM approach is used to extract spectral functions for these channels. By carefully varying some of the irrelevant parameters in the MEM procedure, we confirm that our systematic effects are under control. The eta_c and J/psi states are found to persist at temperatures >~ 1.3 T_c in agreement with our previous dynamical studies.
Dissociation temperatures of J/ψ, ψ', and χ_c states play key roles in the sequential J/ψsuppression scenario for high energy heavy ion collisions. We report on a study of charmonium dissociation temperatures in quenched lattice QCD. On anisotropic lattices, we first subtract the effects of the constant mode in finite temperature meson correlators, which have lead to unphysical results in previous studies. We then extract ground and first exited state masses by diagonalizing correlation functions among different source and sink operators. To distinguish bound states from scattering states, we …
Charmonium dissociation temperatures are studied in a quenched anisotropic lattice QCD with standard plaquette gauge action and O(a) improved Wilson fermion action. Simulations are carried out at temperatures in the range 0.88T_c to 2.3T_c. From the meson correlators, we first subtract the contribution of constant mode, which was reported to mislead the analysis of, in particular, P wave signals. We then calculate effective masses and Bethe-Salpeter wave functions for ground (1S, 1P) and excited states (2S, 2P) using the multi-state variational analysis. To distinguish between bound states and…
Recent studies on the spectral function of charmonium in lattice QCD suggest survival of $J/ψ$ state in the deconfinement phase till relatively high temperature. Based on the studies, different scenarios of $J/ψ$ suppression are discussed to understand experimental results in the Heavy Ion Collision experiments. The scenarios require the information on the dissociation temperatures of $χ_c$ and $ψ'$ as well as that of $J/ψ$. In order to investigate these states in finite temperature lattice QCD, we have to consider an effect of a characteristic constant mode in the correlators. As a result of …

We study charmonium correlators at finite temperature using quenched lattice QCD simulations. Two analysis procedures are applied to extract information on the spectral function: the maximum entropy method, and the $χ^2$ fit analyses including the constrained curve fitting. We focus on the low energy structure of the spectral function by applying the smearing technique. We first discuss the applicability of these methods to the finite temperatures by analyzing the data at T=0 with restricted numbers of degrees of freedom. Then we apply these methods to the correlators at $T>0$. We find no indi…
Lattice QCD studies on charmonium at finite temperature are presented After a discussion about problems for the Maximum Entropy Method applied to finite temperature lattice QCD, I show several results on charmonium spectral functions. The ``wave function'' of charmonium is also discussed to study the spatial correlation between quark and anti-quark in deconfinement phase.
Finite temperature charmonium spectral functions in the pseudoscalar and vector channels are studied in lattice QCD with 2+1 flavours of dynamical Wilson quarks, on fine isotropic lattices (with a lattice spacing of 0.057 fm), with a non-physical pion mass of $m_π \approx$ 545 MeV. The highest temperature studied is approximately $1.4 T_c$. Up to this temperature no significant variation of the spectral function is seen in the pseudoscalar channel. The vector channel shows some temperature dependence, which seems to be consistent with a temperature dependent low frequency peak related to heavy…
Finite temperature charmonium spectral functions in the pseudoscalar(PS) and vector(V) channels are studied in lattice QCD with 2+1 flavours of dynamical Wilson quarks, on fine isotropic lattices (with a lattice spacing of 0.057fm), with a non-physical pion mass of 545MeV. The highest temperature studied is approximately 1.4Tc. Up to this temperature no significant variation of the spectral function is seen in the PS channel. The V channel shows some temperature dependence, which seems to be consistent with a temperature dependent low frequency peak related to heavy quark transport, plus a tem…
We study spatial correlation functions of charmonium in 2+1 flavor QCD using an improved staggered formulation. Contrary to the temporal correlation functions the spatial correlation functions exhibit a strong temperature dependence above the QCD transition temperature. Above this temperature they are sensitive to temporal boundary conditions. Both features become significant at a temperature close to 1.5 Tc and suggest corresponding modifications of charmonium spectral functions.

The interquark potential in charmonium states is calculated for the first time in both the zero and non-zero temperature phases from a first-principles lattice QCD calculation. Simulations with two dynamical quark flavours were used with temperatures T in the range 0.4 T_c \lesssim T \lesssim 1.7 T_c, where T_c is the deconfining temperature. The correlators of point-split operators were analysed to gain spatial information about the charmonium states. A method, introduced by the HAL QCD collaboration and based on the Schroedinger equation, was applied to obtain the interquark potential. We fi…
We present results from lattice studies of charmonium systems near the deconfinement transition temperature. On quenched isotropic lattices with lattice spacings between 0.02 and 0.05 fm, bar{q} q systems with quark masses close to the charm mass and with different spin-parity quantum numbers are studied in the temperature range 0.9 Tc - 3 Tc. Results for temporal correlators of local operators, and the spectral functions constructed from them, are discussed. For the pseudoscalar and vector channels, the correlators are observed to change very little across the deconfinement transition, unlike…
We study charmoinum correlators and spectral functions at finite temperature within the quenched approximation using isotropic lattices with lattice spacing a^-1=4.86 GeV and 9.72 GeV. Although we observe some medium modifications of the ground state charmonium spectral function above deconfinement, we find that ground state charmonia (J/psi and eta_c) exist in the deconfined phase at least up to temperatures as high as 1.5Tc. P-wave charmonia (chi_c) on the other hand are dissociated already at 1.12Tc.
We study the charmonium spectral functions at finite momentum and the dispersion relation of $η_c$ at finite temperature. For the analysis of the spectral function, we use an extended maximum entropy method (MEM). We perform the MEM analysis for the product space of Euclidean correlators in different channels or momenta to incorporate information encoded in correlations among the Euclidean correlators in MEM. We find that this method can improve the error of the reconstructed spectral images. To study the dispersion relation, we introduce a definition of the peak position in the spectral image…
We study the charmonium properties at finite temperature using quenched lattice QCD simulations. Although a simple potential model analysis indicates no bound state at $T>1.05T_c$, our analyses of the spatial correlation between quark and anti-quark and the spectral function indicate that a bound-state-like structure may survive even above $T_c$.
We propose a method to evaluate spectral functions on the lattice based on a variational method. On a lattice with a finite spatial extent, spectral functions consist of discrete spectra only. Adopting a variational method, we calculate the locations and the heights of spectral functions at low-lying discrete spectra. We first test the method in the case of analytically solvable free Wilson quarks at zero and finite temperatures and confirm that the method well reproduces the analytic results for low-lying spectra. We find that we can systematically improve the results by increasing the number…
We compute charmonium spectral functions in 2-flavor QCD on anisotropic lattices using the maximum entropy method. Our results suggest that the S-waves (J/psi and eta_c) survive up to temperatures close to 2Tc, while the P-waves (chi_c0 and chi_c1) melt away below 1.2Tc.
We study charmonium correlators and spectral functions in quenched QCD, using Clover improved Wilson fermions on very fine (0.015 fm) isotropic lattices at 0.75 Tc and 1.5 Tc. We use a new approach to distinguish the zero mode contribution from the other contributions. Once this is removed, we find that the ratios of correlators to reconstructed correlators remain almost unity at all distances. The ground state peaks of spectral functions obtained at 0.75 Tc are reliable and robust. The present accuracy and limited number of points in the temporal direction at 1.5 Tc do not allow for a reliabl…
We study the properties of charmonium states at finite temperature in quenched QCD on isotropic lattices. We measured charmonium correlators using non-perturbatively $\cO(a)$ improved clover fermions on fine ($a=0.01$ fm) lattices with a relatively large size of $128^{3}\times 96$, $128^3\times48$, $128^3\times32$ and $128^3\times24$ at $0.73~T_c$, $1.46~T_c$, $2.20~T_c$ and $2.93~T_c$, respectively. Our analysis suggests that $\Jpsi$ is melted already at $1.46~T_c$ and $η_c$ starts to dissolve at $1.46~T_c$ and does not exist at higher temperatures. We also identify the heavy quark transport …
Charmonium spectral functions in vector and pseudoscalar channels at finite temperature are investigated through the complex Borel sum rules and the maximum entropy method. Our approach enables us to extract the peaks corresponding to the excited charmonia, $ψ^\prime$ and $η_c^\prime$, as well as those of the ground states, $J/ψ$ and $η_c$, which has never been achieved in usual QCD sum rule analyses. We show the spectral functions in vacuum and their thermal modification around the critical temperature, which leads to the almost simultaneous melting (or peak disappearance) of the ground and e…
The potential between charm and anti-charm quarks is calculated non-perturbatively using physical, rather than static quarks at temperatures on both sides of the deconfinement transition $T_{\rm C}$, using a lattice simulation with 2+1 dynamical quark flavours. We used the HAL QCD time-dependent method, originally developed for inter-nucleon potentials. Our lattices are anisotropic, with temporal lattice spacing less than the spatial one which enhances the information content of our correlators at each temperature. Local-extended charmonium correlators were calculated efficiently by contractin…
Charmonia spectral functions at finite temperature are studied using QCD sum rules in combination with the maximum entropy method. This approach enables us to directly obtain the spectral function from the sum rules, without having to introduce any specific assumption about its functional form. As a result, it is found that while J/psi and eta_c manifest themselves as significant peaks in the spectral function below the deconfinement temperature T_c, they quickly dissolve into the continuum and almost completely disappear at temperatures between 1.0 T_c and 1.1 T_c.
The spectral functions of QCD can give us insight into properties of hadrons, and they are useful in probing the QCD vacuum. I will discuss the correlators and spectral functions of charmonium in high temperature two flavour QCD. The spectral functions have been obtained using the Maximum Entropy Method from anisotropic lattice data using the conserved vector current. This work has been done as part of the FASTSUM collaboration. We find that the spectral functions for zero momentum are stable. At non-zero momentum the spectral functions are less stable but still produce resonance and transport…
We report on a study of charmonium at high temperature in 2-flavour QCD. This is the first such study with dynamical fermions. Using an improved anisotropic lattice action, spectral functions are extracted from correlators in the vector and pseudoscalar channels. No signs of medium-induced suppression of the ground states are seen for temperatures up to 1.5T_c, while at T~2T_c there are clear signs of modifications. The current systematic and statistical uncertainties in our data, in particular the relatively coarse lattice and small volume, do not allow us to draw a firm conclusion at this st…
To study the in-medium modification of quarkonium properties, charmonium correlators at $140.4 (β=6.664) \le T \le 221 (β= 7.280)$ (MeV) are calculated using the NRQCD formalism on $48^3 \times 12$ gauge configurations with dynamical $N_f = 2 + 1$ flavors of Highly Improved Staggered Quarks (HISQ). To determine the "zero energy shift" for these lattices, we perform a fine zero temperature scan ($β=6.664, 6.740, 6.800, 6.880, 6.950, 7.030, 7.150$ and $7.280$). We find that the temperature dependence of charmonium correlators is stronger than the temperature dependence of bottomonium correlators…
We present a study of charmonia in hot gluonic plasma, for temperatures upto three times the deconfinement transition temperature Tc. q \bar{q} systems with quark masses close to the charm mass and different spin-parity quantum numbers were studied on very fine isotropic lattices. The analysis of temporal correlators, and spectral functions constructed from them, shows that the J/psi and eta_c survive up to quite high temperatures, with little observable change up to 1.5 Tc, and then gradually weakening and disappearing by 3 Tc. For the scalar and axial vector channels, serious modifications a…
We study the properties of charmonium states at finite temperature in quenched lattice QCD on large and fine isotropic lattices. We perform a detailed analysis of charmonium correlation and spectral functions both below and above Tc. Our analysis suggests that the S wave states disappear at about 1.5 Tc. The charm diffusion coefficient is estimated and found to be approximately 1/πT at 1.5Tc {\leq} T {\leq} 3Tc.
Thermal Hilbert moment QCD sum rules are used to obtain the temperature dependence of the hadronic parameters of charmonium in the vector channel, i.e. the $J$ / $ψ$ resonance mass, coupling (leptonic decay constant), total width, and continuum threshold. The continuum threshold $s_0$, which signals the end of the resonance region and the onset of perturbative QCD (PQCD), behaves as in all other hadronic channels, i.e. it decreases with increasing temperature until it reaches the PQCD threshold $s_0 = 4 m_Q^2$, with $m_Q$ the charm quark mass, at $T\simeq 1.22 T_c$. The rest of the hadronic pa…
We study charmonium correlators in pseudoscalar and vector channels at finite temperature using lattice QCD simulation in the quenched approximation. Anisotropic lattices are used in order to have sufficient numbers of degrees of freedom in the Euclidean temporal direction. We focus on the low energy structure of the spectral function, corresponding to the ground state in the hadron phase, by applying the smearing technique to enhance the contribution to the correlator from this region. We employ two analysis procedures: the maximum entropy method (MEM) for the extraction of the spectral funct…
The hadronic parameters of pseudoscalar ($η_c$) and scalar ($χ_c$) charmonium are determined at finite temperature from Hilbert moment QCD sum rules. These parameters are the hadron mass, leptonic decay constant, total width, and continuum threshold ($s_0$). Results for $s_0(T)$ in both channels indicate that $s_0(T)$ starts approximately constant, and then it decreases monotonically with increasing $T$ until it reaches the QCD threshold, $s_{th} = 4 m_Q^2$, at a critical temperature $T = T_c \simeq 180 \; \mbox{MeV}$ interpreted as the deconfinement temperature. The other hadronic parameters …
We study the properties of charmonium states at finite temperature in quenched QCD on large and fine isotropic lattices. We perform a detailed analysis of charmonium correlation and spectral functions both below and above $T_c$. Our analysis suggests that both S wave states ($J/ψ$ and $η_c$) and P wave states ($χ_{c0}$ and $χ_{c1}$) disappear already at about $1.5 T_c$. The charm diffusion coefficient is estimated through the Kubo formula and found to be compatible with zero below $T_c$ and approximately $1/πT$ at $1.5 T_c\lesssim T\lesssim 3 T_c$.
We present spin-independent and spin-spin interquark potentials for charmonium states, that are calculated using a relativistic heavy quark action for charm quarks on the PACS-CS gauge configurations generated with the Iwasaki gauge action and 2+1 flavors of Wilson clover quark. The interquark potential with finite quark masses is defined through the equal-time Bethe-Salpeter amplitude. The light and strange quark masses are close to the physical point where the pion mass corresponds to $M_π\approx 156(7)$ MeV, and charm quark mass is tuned to reproduce the experimental values of $η_c$ and $J/…
We study an interquark QQ^bar potential for the charmonium system, that is determined from the the equal-time and Coulomb gauge QQ^bar Bethe-Salpeter (BS) wavefunction through the effective Schrödinger equation. This novel approach enables us to evaluate a kinetic heavy quark mass m_Q and a proper interquark potential at finite quark mass m_Q, which receives all orders of 1/m_Q corrections on the static QQ^bar potential from Wilson loops, simultaneously. Precise information of the interquark potential for both charmonium and bottomonium states directly from lattice QCD provides us a chance to …
We present both spin-independent and -dependent parts of a central interquark potential for charmonium states, which is calculated in 2+1 flavor dynamical lattice QCD using the PACS-CS gauge configurations with a lattice cutoff of a^{-1}~2.2 GeV. Our simulations are performed with a relativistic heavy quark action for the charm quark at the lightest pion mass, M_π=156(7) MeV, in a spatial volume of 3fm^3. We observe that the spin-independent charmonium potential obtained from lattice QCD with almost physical quark masses is quite similar to the Conrnell potential used in non-relativistic poten…
We analyze the low frequency part of charmonium spectral functions on large lattices close to the continuum limit in the temperature region $1.5\lesssim T/T_c\lesssim 3$ as well as for $T \simeq 0.75T_c$. We present evidence for the existence of a transport peak above $T_c$ and its absence below $T_c$. The heavy quark diffusion constant is then estimated using the Kubo formula. As part of the calculation we also determine the temperature dependence of the signature for the charmonium bound state in the spectral function and discuss the fate of charmonium states in the hot medium.
In the investigation of in-medium modifications of quarkonia and for determining heavy quark diffusion coefficients, correlation functions play a crucial role. For the first time we perform a continuum extrapolation of charmonium and bottomonium correlators in the vector channel based on non-perturbatively clover-improved Wilson fermions in quenched lattice QCD. Calculations were done at 4 different lattice spacings, spatial extents between 96 and 192, aspect ratio from 1/6 to 1/2, for 5 temperatures between $T/T_c = 0.75$ and $T/T_c = 2.2$. We interpolate between different quark masses to mat…
We present a new method to study the properties of heavy quarks at finite temperature. It combines non-relativistic QCD with an improved gluonic action on anisotropic lattices. The efficiency of the approach is demonstrated by the first non-perturbative calculation of the temperature dependence of low-lying quarkonium "pole" masses. For ground state meson masses in the region between charmonium and bottomonium we find only very little variation up to our highest temperature which corresponds to T approximately 1.2 Tc while first excited states indicate a large mass shift.
We report first results for spectral functions of charmonium in 2-flavour QCD. The spectral functions are determined from vector and pseudoscalar correlators on a dynamical, anisotropic lattice. J/psi and eta_c are found to survive well into the deconfined phase before melting away at T<~2T_c. Current systematic uncertainties prevent us from drawing any definite conclusions at this stage.
We discuss lattice results on the properties of finite momentum charmonium states in a gluonic plasma. We also present preliminary results for bottomonium correlators and spectral functions in the plasma. Significant modifications of chi_b states are seen at temperatures of 1.5 Tc.
We present lattice QCD results for the screening masses of light mesons and charmonia. The lattice computations were performed with 2+1 flavors of improved staggered quarks using quark masses which correspond to realistic pion and kaon masses at zero temperature. For the light quark sector we have found that the screening masses in the pseudo-scalar and the isovector scalar channels do not become degenerate at the chiral crossover temperature indicating an effective non-restoration of the axial symmetry. Also the splitting between the vector and the pseudo-scalar screening masses persists even…
We study charmonium correlators and spectral functions at zero and finite temperature using anisotropic lattices at several different lattice spacings. We find evidence for survival of 1S charmonia states at leas till $1.5T_c$ and dissolution of 1P states at $1.16T_c$.
We study charmonium correlators at finite temperature in quenched anisotropic lattice QCD. The smearing technique is applied to enhance the low energy part of the correlator. We use two analysis procedures: the maximum entropy method for extraction of the spectral function without assuming specific form, as an estimate of the shape of spectral function, and the $χ^2$ fit assuming typical forms as quantitative evaluation of the parameters associated to the forms. We find that at $T\simeq 0.9T_c$ the ground state peak has almost the same mass as at T=0 and almost vanishing width. At $T\simeq 1.1…
In the discussion of hadronization at or close to the freeze-out curve statistical (hadron resonance gas) models play an important role. In particular, in the charmonium sector, regeneration models are considered which rely on the fact that charmonium states can form again already at temperatures well above the QCD transition or hadronization temperature. An important ingredient in these considerations is the regeneration or hadronization of open charm states. In this talk we report on a lattice QCD analysis of correlations of open strange and charm with other conserved quantum numbers like th…
We report on the first study of the screening properties of the mesonic excitations with strange ($s$) and charm ($c$) quarks, specifically the ground states of the pseudo-scalar and vector meson excitations for the $\bar{s}s$, $\bar{s}c$ and $\bar{c}c$ flavor combinations, using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action with dynamical physical strange quark and nearly-physical up and down quarks. By comparing with their respective vacuum meson masses and by investigating the influence of the changing temporal boundary conditions of the valence quarks we study the thermal modifications of the…
We study quarkonium spectral functions at high temperatures using potential model with complex potential. The real part of the potential is constrained by the lattice QCD data on static quark anti-quark correlation functions, while the imaginary part of the potential is taken from perturbative calculations. We find that the imaginary part of the potential has significant effect on quarkonium spectral functions, in particular, it leas to the dissolution of the 1S charmonium and excited bottomonium states at temperatures about 250 MeV and melting of the ground state bottomonium at temperatures s…
The method of QCD sum rules at finite temperature is reviewed, with emphasis on recent results. These include predictions for the survival of charmonium and bottonium states, at and beyond the critical temperature for de-confinement, as later confirmed by lattice QCD simulations. Also included are determinations in the light-quark vector and axial-vector channels, allowing to analyse the Weinberg sum rules, and predict the dimuon spectrum in heavy ion collisions in the region of the rho-meson. Also in this sector, the determination of the temperature behaviour of the up-down quark mass, togeth…
We investigate the properties of heavy quarkonia at finite temperature in detail using QCD sum rules. Extending previous analyses, we take into account a temperature dependent effective continuum threshold and derive constraints on the mass, the width, and the varying effective continuum threshold. We find that at least one of these quantities of a charmonium changes abruptly in the vicinity of the phase transition. We also calculate the ratio of the imaginary time correlator to its reconstructed one, $G/G_{\text{rec}}$, by constructing a model spectral function and compare it to the correspon…
We discuss a constant contribution to meson correlators at finite temperature. In the deconfinement phase of QCD, a colored single quark state is allowed as a finite energy state, which yields to a contribution of wraparound quark propagation to temporal meson correlators. We investigate the effects in the free quark case and quenched QCD at finite temperature. The ``scattering'' contribution causes a constant mode in meson correlators with zero spatial momentum and degenerate quark masses, which can dominate the correlators in the region of large imaginary times. In the free spectral function…
We present the finite temperature spectra of both bottomonium and charmonium, obtained from a consistent lattice QCD based potential picture. Starting point is the complex in-medium potential extracted on full QCD lattices with dynamical u,d and s quarks, generated by the HotQCD collaboration. Using the generalized Gauss law approach, vetted in a previous study on quenched QCD, we fit ${\rm Re}[V]$ with a single temperature dependent parameter $m_D$, the Debye screening mass, and confirm the up to now tentative values of ${\rm Im}[V]$. The obtained analytic expression for the complex potential…
We extend our lattice QCD potential based study arXiv:1509.07366 (JHEP 1512 (2015) 101) of the in-medium properties of heavy quark bound states to P-wave bottomonium and charmonium. Similar to the behavior found in the S-wave channel their spectra show a characteristic broadening, as well as mass shifts to lower energy with increasing temperature. In contrast to the S-wave states, finite angular momentum leads to the survival of spectral peaks even at temperatures, where the continuum threshold reaches below the bound state remnant mass. We elaborate on the ensuing challenges in defining quark…
Studies of quarkonium spectral functions at finite temperature, based on an approach combining QCD sum rules and the maximum entropy method are briefly reviewed. QCD sum rules for heavy quarkonia incorporate finite temperature effects in form of changing values of gluonic condensates that appear in the operator product expansion. These changes depend on the energy density and pressure at finite temperature, which we extract from quenched lattice QCD calculations. The maximum entropy method then allows us to obtain the most probable spectral function from the sum rules, without having to introd…
