The interquark potential in charmonium states is calculated for the first time in both the zero and non-zero temperature phases from a first-principles lattice QCD calculation. Simulations with two dynamical quark flavours were used with temperatures T in the range 0.4 T_c \lesssim T \lesssim 1.7 T_c, where T_c is the deconfining temperature. The correlators of point-split operators were analysed to gain spatial information about the charmonium states. A method, introduced by the HAL QCD collaboration and based on the Schroedinger equation, was applied to obtain the interquark potential. We find a clear temperature dependence, with the central potential becoming flatter (more screened) as the temperature increases.
In calculations of the hyperfine splitting in charmonium, the contributions of the disconnected diagrams are considered small and are typically ignored. We aim to estimate nonperturbatively the size of the resulting correction, which may eventually be needed in high precision calculations of the charmonium spectrum. We study this problem in the quenched and unquenched QCD cases. On dynamical ensembles the disconnected charmonium propagators contain light modes which complicate the extraction of the signal at large distances. In the fully quenched case, where there are no such light modes, the …
We consider the non-relativistic limit of the QCD Hamiltonian in the Coulomb gauge, to describe radiative transitions between conventional charmonium states and from the lowest multiplet of $c\bar{c}$ hybrids to charmonium mesons. The results are compared to potential quark models and lattices calculations.
We present preliminary calculations towards radiative transitions in charmonium using anisotropic $N_f = 2 + 1$ dynamical ensembles generated by the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration. With the use of newer technologies we aim to investigate transitions between states, including potential exotic charmonium states, lying higher in the spectrum than in previous studies. A crucial ingredient in this work is the use of variationally optimised interpolating operators which allow for a reliable determination of the three-point correlation functions needed. Using these operators, we perform first calculat…
We compare the results of a numerical lattice QCD calculation of the charmonium spectrum with the structure of a general non-relativistic potential model. To achieve this we form the non-relativistic reduction of derivative-based fermion bilinear interpolating fields used in lattice QCD calculations and compute their overlap with c-cbar meson states at rest constructed in the non-relativistic quark model, providing a bound-state model interpretation for the lattice data. Essential gluonic components in the bound-states, usually called hybrids, are identified by considering interpolating fields…
We present results for the mass splittings of low-lying charmonium states from a calculation with Wilson clover valence quarks with the Fermilab interpretation on an asqtad sea. We use five lattice spacings and two values of the light sea quark mass to extrapolate our results to the physical point. Sources of systematic uncertainty in our calculation are discussed and we compare our results for the 1S hyperfine splitting, the 1P-1S splitting and the P-wave spin orbit and tensor splittings to experiment.
We present a calculation of the charmonium spectrum with three flavors of dynamical staggered quarks from gauge configurations that were generated by the MILC collaboration. We use the Fermilab action for the valence charm quarks. Our calculation of the spin-averaged 1P--1S and 2S--1S splittings yields a determination of the strong coupling, with $\ams(M_Z) = 0.119 (4)$.
We report on a calculation of the charmonium contribution to the decay $B \rightarrow K\ell^+\ell^-$ using lattice simulations with 2+1 flavors of Mobius domain wall fermions. We focus on the region of $q^2$ below the $J/ψ$ resonance and test the factorization approximation to estimate the amplitude. We show a possible discrepancy between the lattice calculation and the factorization method for the non-factorizable contribution.
We study an interquark QQ^bar potential for the charmonium system, that is determined from the the equal-time and Coulomb gauge QQ^bar Bethe-Salpeter (BS) wavefunction through the effective Schrödinger equation. This novel approach enables us to evaluate a kinetic heavy quark mass m_Q and a proper interquark potential at finite quark mass m_Q, which receives all orders of 1/m_Q corrections on the static QQ^bar potential from Wilson loops, simultaneously. Precise information of the interquark potential for both charmonium and bottomonium states directly from lattice QCD provides us a chance to …
In calculations of the hyperfine splitting in charmonium, the contributions of the disconnected diagrams is considered small and is typically ignored. We aim to estimate nonperturbatively the size of the resulting error, which could potentially affect the high precision calculations of the charmonium spectrum. Following our work on the effects of the disconnected diagrams in unquenched QCD presented at Lattice 2007, we study the same problem in the quenched case. On dynamical ensembles the disconnected charmonium propagators contain light modes which complicate the extraction of the signal at …
Smearing the bare quantum fields in lattice calculations before applying composite hadron creation operators has a long record of substantially improving overlaps onto low-lying energy eigenstates. A technique called distillation which defines smearing for quark fields as a low-rank linear projection operator into a small vector space of smooth gauge-covariant fields has proven to be both effective and versatile in hadron spectroscopy calculations albeit with significant computational cost . In this paper, more general operators in this space of smooth fields are introduced and optimised, whic…
We review selected lattice results on the charmonium spectrum and first attempts to search for the existence of exotic states. The hadro-quarkonium model was proposed to interpret some of the exotic states as a quarkonium core inside a hadron. We present a lattice study of the hadro-quarkonium model in the limit of static quarks. The charm quark decouples in low energy observables and binding energies of charmonium. In a model calculation we are able to evaluate the corrections to decoupling of the charm quark in the continuum.
The instanton effects on the charmonium spectrum is discussed in the framework of nonrelativistic potential model. The results from constituent quark model without inclusion of instanton effects is compared with the results for `the potential from constituent quark model + the contribution from the instanton liquid model'. We consider two models with the corresponding instanton potentials and discuss their relevance to explanations of the origin phenomenological parameters used in the nonrelativistic potential models. We also present the universal instanton potential in the parametrized form w…
We present a spectrum of highly excited charmonium mesons up to around 4.5 GeV calculated using dynamical lattice QCD. Employing novel computational techniques and the variational method with a large basis of carefully constructed operators, we extract and reliably identify the continuum spin of an extensive set of excited states, states with exotic quantum numbers (0+-, 1-+, 2+-) and states with high spin. Calculations are performed on two lattice volumes with pion mass approximately 400 MeV and the mass determinations have high statistical precision even for excited states. We discuss the re…
We report here our lattice simulation on the charmonium spectra in the quenched approximation. Because the full adjustment on the nonperturbative parameters such as $C_E$, $C_B$, $m_0a_s$ and $r_s$ needs many calculation time, we only adjust two of them, $m_0a_s$ and $r_s$($ξ_3$ plays this role in the paper) but with some rescale for mass splitting. After the rescale, we find that our results are in agreement with the experiment ones.
By analyzing existing data on pseudoscalar charmonium decays, we obtain the ratio of the branching fractions of $η_c(2S)$ and $η_c$ decays into ten different final states with light hadrons. For the first time, we test the two existing theoretical predictions of these decays, and find that the experimental data are significantly different from both of them. The lack of observation of any decay mode with higher rate in $η_c(2S)$ than in $η_c$ decays suggests very unusual decay dynamics in pseudoscalar charmonium decays to be identified. We also report the first model-independent evaluation of t…
I will describe recent results from the HPQCD collaboration using a new very accurate method for charm quarks in lattice QCD, that we have used in calculations including the full effect of u, d and s sea quarks. Multiple values of the lattice spacing and of the u, d and s sea quark masses allow us to extrapolate reliably, with a full error budget, to the real world. This opens up the field of charm physics to precision lattice QCD tests. So far we have calculated the D and D_s meson masses to 6 MeV, having fixed the charm quark mass from the eta_c meson. Our D and D_s decay constants (determin…
Nuclear forces and the nuclear many-body problem have been some of Gerry Brown's main topics in his so productive life as a theoretical physicist. In this talk, I outline how Gerry's work laid the foundations of the modern theory of nuclear forces and ab initio calculations of atomic nuclei. I also present some recent developments obtained in the framework of nuclear lattice simulations.
The $J/ψ$-nucleon interaction is studied by lattice QCD calculations. At the leading order of the derivative expansion, the interaction consists of four terms: the central, the spin-spin, and two types of tensor forces. We determine these spin-dependent forces quantitatively by using the time-dependent HAL QCD method. We find that the spin-spin force is the main cause of the hyperfine splitting between the $J=1/2$ and the $J=3/2$ states, while the two tensor forces have much smaller effects on the S-wave scattering processes.
I present an ab initio calculation of the spectrum of carbon-12, including also the famous Hoyle state. Its structure is discussed and a new interpretation of clustering in nuclear physics is given.
Finite temperature charmonium spectral functions in the pseudoscalar and vector channels are studied in lattice QCD with 2+1 flavours of dynamical Wilson quarks, on fine isotropic lattices (with a lattice spacing of 0.057 fm), with a non-physical pion mass of $m_π \approx$ 545 MeV. The highest temperature studied is approximately $1.4 T_c$. Up to this temperature no significant variation of the spectral function is seen in the pseudoscalar channel. The vector channel shows some temperature dependence, which seems to be consistent with a temperature dependent low frequency peak related to heavy…
