In this article, we discuss a couple of nonlinear Galerkin methods (NLGM) in finite element set up for time dependent incompressible Navier-Sotkes equations. We show the crucial role played by the non-linear term in determining the rate of convergence of the methods. We have obtained improved error estimate in $\bL^2$ norm, which is optimal in nature, for linear finite element approximation, in view of the error estimate available in literature, in $\bH^1$ norm.
We present a class of Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the incompressible flow with moving boundaries and interfaces including two-phase flow with surface tension.
A discontinuous Galerkin pressure correction numerical method for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is formulated and analyzed. We prove unconditional stability of the propose scheme. Convergence of the discrete velocity is established by deriving a priori error estimates. Numerical results verify the convergence rates.
A new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element (HMDGFE) method is constructed for incompressible miscible displacement problem. In this method, the hybrid mixed finite element (HMFE) procedure is considered to solve pressure and velocity equations, and a new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin procedure is constructed to solve the concentration equation with upwind technique. Compared with other traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods, the new method can reach global systems with less unknowns and sparser stencils. The consistency and conservation of the method are analyzed, the s…
This paper presents and analyzes a discontinuous Galerkin method for the incompressible three-phase flow problem in porous media. We use a first order time extrapolation which allows us to solve the equations implicitly and sequentially. We show that the discrete problem is well-posed, and obtain a priori error estimates. Our numerical results validate the theoretical results, i.e. the algorithm converges with first order.
The pressure correction scheme is combined with interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. Optimal error estimates are derived for the velocity in the L$^2$ norm in time and in space. Error bounds for the discrete time derivative of the velocity and for the pressure are also established.
We present a strongly conservative and pressure-robust hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled time-dependent Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem. We show existence and uniqueness of a solution and present an optimal a priori error analysis for the fully discrete problem when using Backward Euler time stepping. The theoretical results are verified by numerical examples.
We propose a linearized semi-implicit and decoupled finite element method for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations with variable density. Our method is fully discrete and shown to be unconditionally stable. The velocity equation is solved by an H1-conforming finite element method, and an upwind discontinuous Galerkin finite element method with post-processed velocity is adopted for the density equation. The proposed method is proved to be convergent in approximating reasonably smooth solutions in three-dimensional convex polyhedral domains.
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations require the positivity of thermodynamic quantities in order to guarantee their well-posedness. In this work, we introduce a positivity limiting strategy for entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin discretizations constructed by blending high order solutions with a low order positivity-preserving discretization. The proposed low order discretization is semi-discretely entropy stable, and the proposed limiting strategy is positivity preserving for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes…
In the present paper, we prove convergence rates for the Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) approximation, proposed in Part I of the paper, for systems of $p$-Navier-Stokes type and $p$-Stokes type with $p\in (2,\infty)$. The convergence rates are optimal for linear ansatz functions. The results are supported by numerical experiments.
Entropy stable schemes ensure that physically meaningful numerical solutions also satisfy a semi-discrete entropy inequality under appropriate boundary conditions. In this work, we describe a discretization of viscous terms in the compressible Navier-Stokes equations which enables a simple and explicit imposition of entropy stable no-slip (adiabatic and isothermal) and reflective (symmetry) wall boundary conditions for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations. Numerical results confirm the robustness and accuracy of the proposed approaches.
Discontinuous Galerkin methods of higher order are applied as temporal discretizations for the transient Navier--Stokes equations. The spatial discretization based on inf-sup stable pairs of finite element spaces is stabilised using a one-level local projection stabilisation method. Optimal error bounds for the velocity with constants independent of the viscosity parameter are obtained for the semi-discrete case. For the fully discrete case, error estimates for both velocity and pressure are given. Numerical results support the theoretical predictions.
In the present paper, we prove convergence rates for the pressure of the Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) approximation, proposed in Part I of the paper, of systems of $p$-Navier-Stokes type and $p$-Stokes type with $p\in (2,\infty)$. The results are supported by numerical experiments.
In this paper, we develop and analyze a novel numerical scheme for the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations by the weak Galerkin methods. The divergence-preserving velocity reconstruction operator is employed in the discretization of momentum equation. By employing the velocity construction operator, our algorithm can achieve pressure-robust, which means, the velocity error is independent of the pressure and the irrotational body force. Error analysis is established to show the optimal rate of convergence. Numerical experiments are presented to validate the theoretical conclusions.
This paper proposes a fully implicit numerical scheme for immiscible incompressible two-phase flow in porous media taking into account gravity, capillary effects, and heterogeneity. The objective is to develop a fully implicit stable discontinuous Galerkin (DG) solver for this system that is accurate, bound-preserving, and locally mass conservative. To achieve this, we augment our DG formulation with post-processing flux and slope limiters. The proposed framework is applied to several benchmark problems and the discrete solutions are shown to be accurate, to satisfy the maximum principle and l…
In the present paper, we propose a Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) approximation for fully non-homogeneous systems of $p$-Navier-Stokes type. On the basis of the primal formulation, we prove well-posedness, stability (a priori estimates), and weak convergence of the method. To this end, we propose a new DG discretization of the convective term and develop an abstract non-conforming theory of pseudo-monotonicity, which is applied to our problem. We also use our approach to treat the $p$-Stokes problem.
Wormhole propagation plays a very important role in the product enhancement of oil and gas reservoir. A new combined hybrid mixed finite element method is proposed to solve incompressible wormhole propagation problem with discontinuous Galerkin finite element procedure, in which, the new hybrid mixed finite element algorithm is established for pressure equation, while the discontinuous Galerkin finite element method is considered for concentration equation, and then the porosity function is computed straightly by the approximate value of the concentration. This new combined method can keep loc…
We develop a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD)-Galerkin based Reduced Order Model (ROM) for the efficient numerical simulation of the parametric Navier-Stokes equations in the stream function-vorticity formulation. Unlike previous works, we choose different reduced coefficients for the vorticity and stream function fields. In addition, for parametric studies we use a global POD basis space obtained from a database of time dependent full order snapshots related to sample points in the parameter space. We test the performance of our ROM strategy with the vortex merger benchmark. Accuracy and…
We propose, analyze, and investigate numerically a novel two-level Galerkin reduced order model (2L-ROM) for the efficient and accurate numerical simulation of the steady Navier-Stokes equations. In the first step of the 2L-ROM, a relatively low-dimensional nonlinear system is solved. In the second step, the Navier-Stokes equations are linearized around the solution found in the first step, and a higher-dimensional system for the linearized problem is solved. We prove an error bound for the new 2L-ROM and compare it to the standard one level ROM (1L-ROM) in the numerical simulation of the stea…
In this paper, we propose a unified numerical framework for the time-dependent incompressible Navier--Stokes equation which yields the $H^1$-, $H(\text{div})$-conforming, and discontinuous Galerkin methods with the use of different viscous stress tensors and penalty terms for pressure robustness. Under minimum assumption on Galerkin spaces, the semi- and fully-discrete stability is proved when a family of implicit Runge--Kutta methods are used for time discretization. Furthermore, we present a unified discussion on the penalty term. Numerical experiments are presented to compare our schemes wi…
Analysis of Galerkin-mixed FEMs for incompressible miscible flow in porous media has been investigated extensively in the last several decades. Of particular interest in practical applications is the lowest-order Galerkin-mixed method, { in which a linear Lagrange FE approximation is used for the concentration and the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas FE approximation is used for the velocity/pressure. The previous works only showed the first-order accuracy of the method in $L^2$-norm in spatial direction,} which however is not optimal and valid only under certain extra restrictions on both time ste…
In this paper, we present consistent and inconsistent discontinuous Galerkin methods for incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations with the kinematic pressure, Bernoulli function and EMAC function. Semi- and fully discrete energy stability of the proposed dG methods are proved in a unified fashion. Conservation of total energy, linear and angular momentum is discussed with both central and upwind fluxes. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate our findings and compare our schemes with conventional schemes in the literature in both unsteady and steady problems. Numerical resul…
We propose and study numerically the implicit approximation in time of the Navier-Stokes equations by a Galerkin-collocation method in time combined with inf-sup stable finite element methods in space. The conceptual basis of the Galerkin-collocation approach is the establishment of a direct connection between the Galerkin method and the classical collocation methods, with the perspective of achieving the accuracy of the former with reduced computational costs in terms of less complex algebraic systems of the latter. Regularity of higher order in time of the discrete solution is ensured furthe…
Standard low-order finite elements, which perform well for problems involving compressible elastic materials, are known to under-perform when nearly incompressible materials are involved, commonly exhibiting the locking phenomenon. Interior penalty (IP) discontinuous Galerkin methods have been shown to circumvent locking when simplicial elements are used. The same IP methods, however, result in locking on meshes of quadrilaterals. The authors have shown in earlier work that under-integration of specified terms in the IP formulation eliminates the locking problem for rectangular elements. Here …
In this contribution we present a local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) pressure-correction scheme for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The scheme does not need penalty parameters and satisfies the discrete continuity equation exactly. The scheme is especially suitable for two-phase flow when used with a piecewise-linear interface construction (PLIC) volume-of-fluid (VoF) method and cut-cell quadratures.
We introduce a new hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations. If particular velocity, pressure, magnetic field, and magnetic pressure spaces are employed for both element and trace solution fields, we arrive at an energy stable method which returns pointwise divergence-free velocity fields and magnetic fields and properly balances linear momentum. We discretize in time using a second-order-in-time generalized-$α$ method, and we present a block iterative method for solving the resulting nonlinear system of equations at each time step. We nume…
We present a provably stable discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with artificial compressibility and variable density. Stability proofs, which include boundary conditions, that follow a continuous entropy analysis are provided. We define a mathematical entropy function that combines the traditional kinetic energy and an additional energy term for the artificial compressiblity, and derive its associated entropy conservation law. The latter allows us to construct a provably stable split-form nodal Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) approximation…
This paper is a continuation of the work presented in [Chertock et al., Math. Cli. Weather Forecast. 5, 1 (2019), 65--106]. We study uncertainty propagation in warm cloud dynamics of weakly compressible fluids. The mathematical model is governed by a multiscale system of PDEs in which the macroscopic fluid dynamics is described by a weakly compressible Navier-Stokes system and the microscopic cloud dynamics is modeled by a convection-diffusion-reaction system. In order to quantify uncertainties present in the system, we derive and implement a generalized polynomial chaos stochastic Galerkin me…
This paper presents the first energy-dissipative level-set method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with surface tension. The methodology relies on the recently proposed concept of functional entropy variables. Discretization in space is performed with isogeometric analysis. Temporal-integration is performed with a new perturbed midpoint scheme. The fully-discrete scheme is unconditionally energy-dissipative, pointwise divergence-free and satisfies the maximum principle for the density. Numerical examples in two and three dimensions verify the energetic-stability of the methodolog…
We present a reduced order method (ROM) based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) for the viscous Burgers' equation and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations discretized using an implicit-explicit hybrid discontinuous Galerkin/discoutinuous Galerkin (IMEX HDG/DG) scheme. A novel closure model, which can be easily computed offline, is introduced. Numerical results are presented to test the proposed POD model and the closure model.
We provide optimal order pressure error estimates for the Crank-Nicolson semidiscretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Second order estimates for the velocity error are long known, we prove that the pressure error is of the same order if considered at interval midpoints, confirming previous numerical evidence. For simplicity we first give a proof under high regularity assumptions that include nonlocal compatibility conditions for the initial data, then use smoothing techniques for a proof under reduced assumptions based on standard local conditions only.
In this paper we consider a conservative discretization of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. We propose an extension of Arakawa's classical finite difference scheme for fluid flow in the vorticity-stream function formulation to a high order discontinuous Galerkin approximation. In addition, we show numerical simulations that demonstrate the accuracy of the scheme and verify the conservation properties, which are essential for long time integration. Furthermore, we discuss the massively parallel implementation on graphic processing units.
A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) formulation of the linearized incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, known as Oseen equations, is presented. The Cauchy stress formulation is considered and the symmetry of the stress tensor and the mixed variable, namely the scaled strain-rate tensor, is enforced pointwise via Voigt notation. Using equal-order polynomial approximations of degree k for all variables, HDG provides a stable discretization. Moreover, owing to Voigt notation, optimal convergence of order k+1 is obtained for velocity, pressure and strain-rate tensor and a local postproce…
In this work we introduce the development of a three--phase incompressible Navier--Stokes/Cahn--Hilliard numerical method to simulate three--phase flows, present in many industrial operations. The numerical method is then applied to successfully solve oil transport problems, such as those found in the oil and gas industry. The three--phase model adopted in this work is a Cahn--Hilliard diffuse interface model, which was derived by Boyer and Lapuerta et al. 2006. The Cahn--Hilliard model is coupled to the entropy--stable incompressible Navier--Stokes equations model derived by Manzanero et al. …
We present a Reduced Order Model (ROM) which exploits recent developments in Physics Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) for solving inverse problems for the Navier--Stokes equations (NSE). In the proposed approach, the presence of simulated data for the fluid dynamics fields is assumed. A POD-Galerkin ROM is then constructed by applying POD on the snapshots matrices of the fluid fields and performing a Galerkin projection of the NSE (or the modified equations in case of turbulence modeling) onto the POD reduced basis. A $\textit{POD-Galerkin PINN ROM}$ is then derived by introducing deep neural …
In this paper we present an efficient discretization method for the solution of the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations based on a high order (Hybrid) Discontinuous Galerkin formulation. The crucial component for the efficiency of the discretization method is the disctinction between stiff linear parts and less stiff non-linear parts with respect to their temporal and spatial treatment. Exploiting the flexibility of operator-splitting time integration schemes we combine two spatial discretizations which are tailored for two simpler sub-problems: a corresponding hyperbolic transport…
In a plane polygon $P$ with straight sides, we prove analytic regularity of the Leray-Hopf solution of the stationary, viscous, and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We assume small data, analytic volume force and no-slip boundary conditions. Analytic regularity is quantified in so-called countably normed, corner-weighted spaces with homogeneous norms. Implications of this analytic regularity include exponential smallness of Kolmogorov $N$-widths of solutions, exponential convergence rates of mixed $hp$-discontinuous Galerkin finite element and spectral element discretizations and of mod…
