Aims: To study the imprints of a rotating bar on the kinematics of stars in the thin and thick disks throughout the Galaxy. Methods: We perform test particle numerical simulations of the thin and thick disks in a 3D Galactic potential that includes a halo, a bulge, thin and thick disks, and a Ferrers bar. We analyze the resulting velocity distributions of populations corresponding to both disks, for different positions in the Galaxy and for different structural parameters of the bar. Results: We find that the velocity distributions of the disks are affected by the bar, and that strong transient effects are present for approximately 10 bar rotations after this is introduced adiabatically. On long (more realistic) timescales, the effects of the bar are strong on the kinematics of thin disk stars, and weaker on those in the thick disk, but in any case significant. Furthermore, we find that it is possible to trace the imprints of the bar also vertically and at least up to z ~ 1 kpc for the thin disk and z ~ 2 kpc for the thick disk.
We revisit the methods to determine the Galactic rotation curve and kinematical distances from radial velocities and proper motions. We construct "accuracy diagrams" to show the distributions in the galactic plane of expected uncertainties in the derived quantities such as rotation velocities and kinematical distances. We discuss how to optimize the source selection for measurements of kinematical quantities based on the accuracy diagrams.
High resolution spectroscopic data of a large sample of galactic planetary nebulae with [WC] central stars ([WC]PNe) are analyzed to determine their kinematical behavior. Their heliocentric velocities have been determined with a precision better than a few km/s. Distances obtained from the literature are used to derive the peculiar velocities of the objects.
The variation of the kinematical properties of the Galactic thick disk with Galactic height Z are studied by means of 412 red giants observed in the direction of the south Galactic pole up to 4.5 kpc from the plane. We confirm the non-null mean radial motion toward the Galactic anticenter found by other authors, but we find that it changes sign at |Z|=3 kpc, and the proposed inward motion of the LSR alone cannot explain these observations. The rotational velocity decreases with |Z| by -30 km/s/kpc, but the data are better represented by a power-law with index 1.25, similar to that proposed fro…
We have observed two kinematically offset active galactic nuclei (AGN), whose ionised gas is at a different line-of-sight velocity to their host galaxies, with the SAMI integral field spectrograph (IFS). One of the galaxies shows gas kinematics very different to the stellar kinematics, indicating a recent merger or accretion event. We demonstrate that the star formation associated with this event was triggered within the last 100 Myr. The other galaxy shows simple disc rotation in both gas and stellar kinematics, aligned with each other, but in the central region has signatures of an outflow d…
We derive the mean velocity components at various Galactocentric radii from 8 to 14 kpc using about 40,000 red clump stars observed in the LAMOST survey. We find that the vertical bulk motion for younger red clump stars are significantly larger than that for the older red clump stars. This is likely the kinematical feature of the Galactic warp around its line-of-node, which is located close to the Galactic anti-center region. It is evident that the warp are mainly contributed by the younger stars rather than the older stars. The age variation in the vertical kinematics favors a formation scena…
Using a numerical simulation of an isolated barred disc galaxy, we first demonstrate that the resonances of the inner bar structure induce more prominent features in the action space distribution for the kinematically hotter stars, which are less sensitive to the local perturbation, such as the transient spiral arms. Then, we analyse the action distribution for the kinematically hotter stars selected from the Gaia EDR3 data as the stars with higher values of radial and vertical actions. We find several resonance features, including two new features, in the angular momentum distribution similar…
We use kinematical and chemical properties of 754 Corot stars to characterise the stellar populations of the Milky Way disc in three beams close the Galactic plane. From the atmospheric parameters derived in Gazzano et al. (2010) with the Matisse algorithm, we derived stellar distances using isochrones. Combining these data with proper motions, we provide the complete kinematical description of stars in three Corot fields. Finally, we used kinematical criteria to identify the Galactic populations in our sample and study their characteristics, particularly their chemistry. Comparing our kinemat…
We estimated the dynamical surface mass density Sigma at the solar position between Z=1.5 and 4 kpc from the Galactic plane, as inferred from the kinematics of thick disk stars. The formulation is exact within the limit of validity of a few basic assumptions. The resulting trend of Sigma(Z) matches the expectations of visible mass alone, and no dark component is required to account for the observations. We extrapolate a dark matter (DM) density in the solar neighborhood of 0+-1 mM_sun pc^-3, and all the current models of a spherical DM halo are excluded at a confidence level higher than 4sigma…
We present a kinematical study of RR~Lyrae stars associated with two Oosterhoff groups in the Galactic bulge. We used data published in the first paper of the series, plus proper motions from the {\it Gaia} Data Release 2, and radial velocities from the literature. A 6D kinematical and spatial solution was obtained for 429 RR~Lyrae stars. We use a model of the Galactic gravitational potential to infer stellar orbits. We did not find a difference between the Oosterhoff groups in the individual components of the space velocity. We report that \textit{foreground} and \textit{background} stars wit…
In this work we introduce a physically motivated method of performing disc/spheroid decomposition of simulated galaxies, which we apply to the Eagle sample. We make use of the HEALPix package to create Mollweide projections of the angular momentum map of each galaxy's stellar particles. A number of features arise on the angular momentum space which allows us to decompose galaxies and classify them into different morphological types. We assign stellar particles with angular separation of less/greater than 30 degrees from the densest grid cell on the angular momentum sphere to the disc/spheroid …
We present the first results from the BAaDE (Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamic Evolution) survey. Though only a subset of the complete survey ($\sim$2700 out of $\sim$20000 final sources), our data comprise the largest radio kinematic survey to date of stellar SiO masers observed toward the Galactic bulge and plane from $-15^\circ < l < +12^\circ$ and $-6^\circ < b < +6^\circ$. Our sources include a substantial number of line-of-sight (LoS) velocities in high extinction regions within $\pm 1^\circ$ of the Galactic plane. When matched with 2MASS photometry, our radio-detected sample lies significan…
We find two chemically distinct populations separated relatively cleanly in the [Fe/H] - [Mg/Fe] plane, but also distinguished in other chemical planes, among metal-poor stars (primarily with metallicities [Fe/H] $< -0.9$) observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) and analyzed for Data Release 13 (DR13) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These two stellar populations show the most significant differences in their [X/Fe] ratios for the $α$-elements, C+N, Al, and Ni. In addition to these populations having differing chemistry, the low metallicity high-Mg popul…
IC 166 is an intermediate-age open cluster ($\sim 1$ Gyr) which lies in the transition zone of the metallicity gradient in the outer disc. Its location, combined with our very limited knowledge of its salient features, make it an interesting object of study. We present the first high-resolution spectroscopic and precise kinematical analysis of IC 166, which lies in the outer disc with $R_{GC} \sim 12.7$ kpc. High resolution \textit{H}-band spectra were analyzed using observations from the SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey. We made use of the Brussel…
As part of a study aimed at determining the kinematical and chemical properties of Terzan 5, we present the first characterization of the bulge stars surrounding this puzzling stellar system. We observed 615 targets located well beyond the tidal radius of Terzan 5 and we found that their radial velocity distribution is well described by a Gaussian function peaked at <v_rad>=+21.0\pm4.6 km/s and with dispersion sigma_v=113.0\pm2.7 km/s. This is the one of the few high-precision spectroscopic survey of radial velocities for a large sample of bulge stars in such a low and positive latitude enviro…
We aim to quantify the chemical and kinematical properties of the Galactic disks with a sample of 119,558 giant stars having abundances and 3D velocities taken or derived from the APOGEE DR17 and Gaia EDR3 catalogs. The Gaussian Mixture Model is employed to distinguish the high-$α$ and low-$α$ sequences along the metallicity by simutaneously using the chemical and kinematical data. Four disk components are identified and quantified that named as h$α$mp, h$α$mr, l$α$mp, and l$α$mr disks, which correspond to the features of high-$α$ or low-$α$, and metal-poor or metal-rich. Combined with the spa…
The kinematics of the plasma in 14 PNe is analysed by measuring the expansion velocities (V$_{exp}$) of different ions as derived from their collisionally excited lines (CELs) and optical recombination lines (ORLs). V$_{exp}$ are analysed as a function of the ionisation potential of ions that at first approximation represents the distance of the ion to the central star. In most cases the kinematics of ORLs is incompatible with the kinematics of CELs at the same ionisation potential, specially if CELs and ORLs of the same ion are considered. In general V$_{exp}$ from ORLs is lower than V$_{exp}…

The MUSE TIMER Survey has obtained high signal and high spatial resolution integral-field spectroscopy data of the inner $\sim6\times6$ kpc of 21 nearby massive disc galaxies. This allows studies of the stellar kinematics of the central regions of massive disc galaxies that are unprecedented in spatial resolution. We confirm previous predictions from numerical and hydrodynamical simulations of the effects of bars and inner bars on stellar and gaseous kinematics, and also identify box/peanuts via kinematical signatures in mildly and moderately inclined galaxies, including a box/peanut in a face…
From the decades of the theoretical studies, it is well known that the formation of the bar triggers the gas funnelling into the central sub-kpc region and leads to the formation of a kinematically cold nuclear stellar disc (NSD). We demonstrate that this mechanism can be used to identify the formation epoch of the Galactic bar, using an N-body/hydrodynamics simulation of an isolated Milky Way-like galaxy. As shown in many previous literature, our simulation shows that the bar formation triggers an intense star formation for ~1 Gyr in the central region, and forms a NSD. As a result, the oldes…
We combine GALEX and Gaia DR2 catalogs to track star formation in the outskirts of our Galaxy. Using photometry, proper motions and parallaxes we identify a structure of ~ 300 OB-type candidates located between 12 and 15 kpc from the Galactic center that are kinematically cold. The structure is located between l = 120 and 200 degrees, above the plane up to ~700 pc and below the plane to ~ 1 kpc. The bulk motion is disk-like; however we measure a mean upward vertical motion of 5.7 +-0.4 km/s, and a mean outward radial motion of between 8 and 16 km/s. The velocity dispersion along the least disp…
HI line observations of nearby galaxies often reveal the presence of extraplanar and/or kinematically anomalous gas that deviates from the general circular flow. In this work, we study the dependence of kinematically anomalous HI gas in galaxies taken from the Simba cosmological simulation on galaxy properties such as HI mass fraction, specific star formation rate, and local environmental density. To identify kinematically anomalous gas, we use a simple yet effective decomposition method to separate it from regularly-rotating gas in the galactic disk; this method is well-suited for application…
We present results obtained from ALMA CO (2-1) data of the double-barred galaxy NGC 3504. With three times higher angular resolution (~ 0."8) than previous studies, our observations reveal an inner molecular gas bar, a nuclear ring, and four inner spiral arm-like structures in the central 1 kpc region. Furthermore, the CO emission is clearly aligned with the two dust lanes in the outer bar region, with differences in shape and intensity between them. The total molecular gas mass in the observed region (50"x57") is estimated to be $\sim 3.1\times 10^9 \, {\rm M}_{\odot}$, which is 17 per cent o…
Context: In our Paper I, by using statistical deconvolution methods, extended kinematics maps of Gaia-DR2 data have been produced in a range of heliocentric distances that are a factor of two to three larger than those analyzed previously by the Gaia Collaboration with the same data. It added the range of Galactocentric distances between 13 kpc and 20 kpc to the previous maps. Aims: Here, we investigate the dynamical effects produced by different mechanisms that can explain the radial and vertical components of these extended kinematic maps, including a decomposition of bending and breathing o…
Much of the inner Milky Way's (MW) global rotation and velocity dispersion patterns can be reproduced by models of secularly-evolved, bar-dominated bulges. More sophisticated constraints, including the higher moments of the line-of-sight velocity distributions (LOSVDs) and limits on the chemodynamical substructure, are critical for interpreting observations of the unresolved inner regions of extragalactic systems and for placing the MW in context with other galaxies. Here, we use SDSS-APOGEE data to develop these constraints, by presenting the first maps of the LOSVD skewness and kurtosis of m…
The kinematical parameters, spatial shape and structure of the open cluster IC 2391 and the associated stellar stream are studied here using Gaia-DR2 (GDR2) astrometry data. The apex positions are determined for the open cluster IC 2391 (data taken from Cantat-Gaudin et al.) and for the kinematical streams stars mentioned in Montes et al. using both convergent point and AD-diagram methods. The values of apex coordinates identified. The results are in good agreement with the previously calculated values. The positions of the stars in the disk and the spatial dispersion velocities are determined…
It is widely believed that star clusters form with low star formation efficiencies. With the onset of stellar winds by massive stars or finally when the first super nova blows off, the residual gas is driven out of the embedded star cluster. Due to this fact a large amount, if not all, of the stars become unbound and disperse in the gravitational potential of the galaxy. In this context, Kroupa (2002) suggested a new mechanism for the emergence of thickened Galactic discs. Massive star clusters add kinematically hot components to the galactic field populations, building up in this way, the Gal…
We have learned recently that the inner halo of the Milky Way contains a kinematically coherent component (Gaia-Enceladus) from a significant merger 10 Gyrs ago. By contrast the inner halo (defined to exclude the Magellanic Stream) contains no similar intruder stellar population of billion year age. The tracer we use to set the corresponding upper limit is Gaia asymptotic giant branch stars, rather than Gaia kinematics. The primary sample is drawn from Gaia DR2 with SkyMapper photometry. This is supplemented with PanSTARRS and 2MASS photometry. As the Gaia mission proceeds, a star formation hi…
We present a spatially resolved analysis of ionized gas at the nuclear region of the nearby galaxy NGC 1068. While NGC 1068 has been known to have gas outflows driven by its active galactic nucleus (AGN), more complex kinematical signatures were recently reported, which were inconsistent with a rotation or simple biconical outflows. To account for the nature of gas kinematics, we performed a spatially resolved kinematical study, finding a morphologically symmetric pair of approaching and receding gas blobs in the northeast region. The midpoint of the two blobs is located at a distance of 180 p…
We report the detection of the Galactic nuclear disc in line-of-sight kinematics of stars, measured with infrared spectroscopy from APOGEE. This stellar component of the nuclear disc has an extent and rotation velocity V ~ 120kms comparable to the gas disc in the central molecular zone. The current data suggest that this disc is kinematically cool and has a small vertical extent of order 50pc. The stellar kinematics suggest a truncation radius/steep decline of the stellar disc at a galactocentric radius R ~ 150pc, and provide tentative evidence for an overdensity at the position of the ring fo…
We use a sample of 938 red clump giant stars located in the direction of the galactic long bar to study the chemistry of Milky Way bar stars. Kinematically separating stars on bar orbits from stars with inner disc orbits, we find that stars on bar-like orbits are more metal rich with a mean iron abundance of <[Fe/H]>=+0.30 compared to <[Fe/H]>=+0.03 for the inner disc. Spatially selecting bar stars is complicated by a strong vertical metallicity gradient of -1.1dex/kpc, but we find the metallicity distribution varies in a manner consistent with our orbital selection. Our results have two possi…
Kinematical properties of CVs were investigated according to population types and orbital periods, using the space velocities computed from recently updated systemic velocities, proper motions and parallaxes. Reliability of collected space velocity data are refined by removing 34 systems with largest space velocity errors. The 216 CVs in the refined sample were shown to have a dispersion of $53.70 \pm 7.41$ km s$^{-1}$ corresponding to a mean kinematical age of $5.29 \pm 1.35$ Gyr. Population types of CVs were identified using their Galactic orbital parameters. According to the population anal…
We present the results of a set of N-body simulations following the long-term evolution of the rotational properties of star cluster models evolving in the external tidal field of their host galaxy, after an initial phase of violent relaxation. The effects of two-body relaxation and escape of stars lead to a redistribution of the ordered kinetic energy from the inner to the outer regions, ultimately determining a progressive general loss of angular momentum; these effects are reflected in the overall decline the rotation curve as the cluster evolves and loses stars. We show that all of our mod…
We propose an extension of the GC3 streamer finding method of Johnston et al. 1996 that can be applied to the future Gaia database. The original method looks for streamers along great circles in the sky, our extension adds the kinematical restriction that velocity vectors should also be constrained to lie along these great circles, as seen by a Galactocentric observer. We show how to use these combined criteria starting from heliocentric observables. We test it by using the mock Gaia catalogue of Brown et al. 2005, which includes a realistic Galactic background and observational errors, but wi…
We present a detailed analysis of kinematics of the Milky Way disk in solar neighborhood using GAIA DR3 catalog. To determine the local kinematics of the stellar disks of the Milky Way galaxy we use a complete sample of 278,228 red giant branch (RGB) stars distributed in a cylinder, centered at the Sun with a 1 kpc radius and half-height of 0.5 kpc. We determine separately the kinematical properties of RGB stars for each Galactic hemisphere in search for possible asymmetries. The kinematical properties of the RGB stars reveal the existence of two kinematically distinct components: the thin dis…
Blue straggler stars (BSSs) are brighter and bluer than the main-sequence (MS) turnoff and more massive than MS stars. Two scenarios for their formation have been proposed: collision-induced stellar mergers (COL-BSSs),or mass-transfer in binary systems (MT-BSSs).Depleted surface abundances of C and O are expected for MT-BSSs,whereas no chemical anomalies are predicted for COL-BSSs. Both MT and COL-BSSs should rotate fast, but braking mechanisms may intervene with efficiencies and time-scales unknown, thus preventing a clear prediction of the expected rotational velocities. In this context,an exte…
Aims: We study the relations between stellar kinematics and chemical abundances of a large sample of RAVE giants in search for selection criteria needed for disentangling different Galactic stellar populations. Methods: We select a sample of 2167 giant stars with signal-to-noise per spectral measurements above 75 from the RAVE chemical catalogue and follow the analysis performed by Gratton and colleagues on 150 subdwarf stars spectroscopically observed at high-resolution. We then use a larger sample of 9131 giants (with signal-to-noise above 60) to investigate the chemo-kinematical characteris…
Ever since a thick disk was proposed to explain the vertical distribution of the Milky Way disk stars, its origin has been a recurrent question. We aim to answer this question by inspecting 19 disk galaxies with stellar mass greater than $10^{10}\,\rm M_\odot$ in recent cosmological high-resolution zoom-in simulations: Galactica and NewHorizon. The thin and thick disks are reasonably reproduced by the simulations with scale heights and luminosity ratios as observed. We then spatially classify the thin and thick disks and find that the thick disk stars are older, metal-poorer, kinematically-hot…
As part of the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters, we present a detailed investigation of the internal kinematics of NGC 5986. The analysis is based on about 300 individual radial velocities of stars located at various distances from the cluster center, up to 300 arcseconds (about 4 half-mass radii). Our analysis reveals the presence of a solid-body rotation extending from the cluster center to the outermost regions probed by the data, and a velocity dispersion profile initially declining with the distance from the cluster's center, but flattening a…
We have carried out integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy of H$α$, [N II] and [O III] emission lines for a sample of Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) with Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars and weak emission-line stars (wels). Comparing their spatially-resolved kinematic observations with morpho-kinematic models allowed us to disentangle their three-dimensional gaseous structures. Our results indicate that these PNe have axisymmetric morphologies, either bipolar or elliptical. In many cases the associated kinematic maps for the PNe around hot central stars also reveal the presence of so-called fast low-io…
We highlight some results from our detailed abundance analysis study of 703 kinematically selected F and G dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood. The analysis is based on spectra of high-resolution (R=45000 to 110000) and high signal-to-noise (S/N=150 to 300). The main findings include: (1) at a given metallicity, the thick disk abundance trends are more $α$-enhanced than those of the thin disk; (2) the metal-rich limit of the thick disk reaches at least solar metallicities; (3) the metal-poor limit of the thin disk is around [Fe/H]=-0.8; (4) the thick disk shows an age-metallicity gradient; …
Aims: We investigate whether the cylindrical (galactocentric) radial velocity gradient of ~ -3 km/s/kpc, directed radially from the Galactic center and recently observed in the stars of the solar neighborhood with the RAVE survey, can be explained by the resonant effects of the bar near the solar neighborhood. Methods: We compared the results of test particle simulations of the Milky Way with a potential that includes a rotating bar with observations from the RAVE survey. To this end we applied the RAVE selection function to the simulations and convolved these with the characteristic RAVE erro…
Resonant torques couple stellar bars to dark matter halos. Here we use high-resolution numerical simulations to demonstrate long-term angular momentum transfer between stellar bars and dark matter orbits of varying orientation. We show that bar-driven reversals of dark matter orbit orientations can play a surprisingly large role in the evolution of the bar pattern speed. In predominantly prograde (co-rotating) halos, dark matter orbits become trapped in the stellar bar forming a parallel dark matter bar. This dark matter bar reaches more than double the vertical height of the stellar bar. In h…
The study of stellar kinematic properties may provide hints on the formation and evolution of elliptical and lenticular galaxies. Although most previous studies have focused on the large scale of these galaxies, their central regions (scales of $\sim$ 100 pc) may contain important clues about their structure, such as kinematically decoupled cores. This is the fourth paper on a sample of 10 massive ($σ$ $>$ 200 km s$^{-1}$) and nearby ($d$ $<$ 31 Mpc) early-type galaxies, observed with the integral field unit of the Gemini South Multi Object Spectrograph. Here, we analyse the properties of the …
High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) are produced after the first supernova event in a massive binary. These objects are intrinsically young, and can suffer from a significant natal kick. As such, the progenitors of HMXBs are likely to have formed away from the current location of the X-ray emitting systems. We aim to find the birthplace of the known HMXBs of our Milky Way. Specifically, we want to answer the question whether the formation of HMXBs can be associated to open stellar clusters and/or Galactic spiral structures, and infer from that the time elapsed since the first supernova event. We …
We report trigonometric parallax measurements of masers in the massive star forming complex W43 from VLBA observations as part of the BeSSeL Survey. Based on measurements of three 12 GHz methanol maser sources (G029.86-00.04, G029.95-00.01 and G031.28+00.06) and one 22 GHz water maser source (G031.58+00.07) toward W43, we derived a distance of $5.49^{+0.39}_{-0.34}$ kpc to W43. By associating the masers with CO molecular clouds, and associating the clouds kinematically with CO longitude-velocity spiral features, we assign W43 to the Scutum spiral arm, close to the near end of the Galactic bar.…
Galactic bars are unstable to a vertical buckling instability which heats the disk and in some cases forms a boxy/peanut shaped bulge. We analyze the buckling instability as an application of classical Euler buckling followed by nonlinear gravitational Landau damping in the collisionless system. We find that the buckling instability is dictated by the kinematic properties and geometry of the bar. The analytical result is compared to simulations of isolated galaxies containing the disk and dark matter components. Our results demonstrate that violent buckling does not destroy bars while a less e…
We use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12, which is the largest available white dwarf catalog to date, to study the evolution of the kinematical properties of the population of white dwarfs in the Galactic disc. We derive masses, ages, photometric distances and radial velocities for all white dwarfs with hydrogen-rich atmospheres. For those stars for which proper motions from the USNO-B1 catalog are available the true three-dimensional components of the stellar space velocity are obtained. This subset of the original sample comprises 20,247 objects, making it the largest sample of wh…
We produce a kinematic analysis of AGN-hosting cluster galaxies from a sample 33 galaxy clusters selected using the X-ray Clusters Database (BAX) and populated with galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8 (DR8). The 33 galaxy clusters are delimited by their relative intensity of member galaxy substructuring as a proxy to core merging to derive two smaller sub-samples of 8 dynamically active (merging) and 25 dynamically relaxed (non-merging) states. The AGN were selected for each cluster sub-sample by employing the WHAN diagram to the strict criteria of log$_{10}$([NII]…
Bars have a complex three-dimensional shape. In particular their inner part is vertically much thicker than the parts further out. Viewed edge-on, the thick part of the bar is what is commonly known as a boxy-, peanut- or X- bulge and viewed face-on it is referred to as a barlens. These components are due to disc and bar instabilities and are composed of disc material. I review here their formation, evolution and dynamics, using simulations, orbital structure theory and comparisons to observations.
We report the first high spectral resolution study of 17 M giants kinematically confirmed to lie within a few parsecs of the Galactic Center, using R=24,000 spectroscopy from Keck/NIRSPEC and a new linelist for the infrared K band. We consider their luminosities and kinematics, which classify these stars as members of the older stellar population and the central cluster. We find a median metallicity of <[Fe/H]>=-0.16 and a large spread from approximately -0.3 to +0.3 (quartiles). We find that the highest metallicities are [Fe/H]<+0.6, with most of the stars being at or below the Solar iron abu…
A new method for selecting stars in the Galactic bar based on 2MASS infrared photometry in combination with stellar proper motions from the Kharkiv XPM catalogue has been implemented. In accordance with this method, red clump and red giant branch stars are preselected on the color -- magnitude diagram and their photometric distances are calculated. Since the stellar proper motions are indicators of a larger velocity dispersion toward the bar and the spiral arms compared to the stars with circular orbits, applying the constraints on the proper motions of the preselected stars that take into acc…
This study is based on high quality astrometric and spectroscopic data from the most recent releases by Gaia and APOGEE. We select $58\,882$ thin and thick disk red giants, in the Galactocentric (cylindrical) distance range $5 < R < 13$~kpc and within $|z| < 3$~kpc, for which full chemo-kinematical information is available. Radial chemical gradients, $\partial \rm{[M/H]} / \partial \rm{R}$, and rotational velocity-metallicity correlations, $\partial V_ϕ/ \partial \rm{[M/H]}$, are re-derived firmly uncovering that the thick disk velocity-metallicity correlation maintains its positiveness over t…
We have identified the four most significant features in the UV velocity distribution of solar neighborhood stars: H1, H2 in the Hercules stream and W1, W2 in the Wolf 630 stream. We have formulated the problem of determining several characteristics of the central Galactic bar independently from each of the identified features by assuming that the Hercules and Wolf 630 streams are of a bar-induced dynamical nature. The problem has been solved by constructing 2:1 resonant orbits in the rotating bar frame for each star in these streams. Analysis of the resonant orbits found has shown that the ba…
We use the VVV survey observations in bulge regions close to the Galactic plane to trace the bar inclination at the Galactic latitude b\sim\pm1° and to investigate a distinct structure in the inner regions of the bar that was previously detected at positive latitude (b=+1°). We use the (J-Ks) colors of the red clump stars to obtain reddening values on 6 x 6 arcmin scale, minimizing the problems arising from differential extinction. Dereddened magnitudes are then used to build the luminosity function of the bulge in regions of ~0.4 sq deg to obtain the mean red clump magnitudes. These are used …
The center of our galaxy is home to a massive black hole, SgrA*, and a nuclear star cluster containing stellar populations of various ages. While the late type stars may be too old to have retained memory of their initial orbital configuration, and hence formation mechanism, the kinematics of the early type stars should reflect their original distribution. In this contribution we present a new statistic which uses directly-observable kinematical stellar data to infer orbital parameters for stellar populations, and is capable of distinguishing between different origin scenarios. We use it on a …
We present orbit analysis for a sample of 8 inner bulge globular clusters, together with one reference halo object. We used proper motion values derived from long time base CCD data. Orbits are integrated in both an axisymmetric model and a model including the Galactic bar potential. The inclusion of the bar proved to be essential for the description of the dynamical behavior of the clusters. We use the Monte Carlo scheme to construct the initial conditions for each cluster, taking into account the uncertainties in the kinematical data and distances. The sample clusters show typically maximum …
