Using a numerical simulation of an isolated barred disc galaxy, we first demonstrate that the resonances of the inner bar structure induce more prominent features in the action space distribution for the kinematically hotter stars, which are less sensitive to the local perturbation, such as the transient spiral arms. Then, we analyse the action distribution for the kinematically hotter stars selected from the Gaia EDR3 data as the stars with higher values of radial and vertical actions. We find several resonance features, including two new features, in the angular momentum distribution similar to what are seen in our numerical simulations. We show that the bar pattern speeds of about $Ω_{\rm bar}\sim34$~km~s$^{-1}$~kpc$^{-1}$ and 42~km~s$^{-1}$~kpc$^{-1}$ explain all these features equally well. The resonance features we find correspond to the inner 4:1, co-rotation, outer 4:1, outer Lindblad and outer 4:3 (co-rotation, outer 4:1, outer Lindblad, outer 4:3 and outer 1:1) resonances, when $Ω_{\rm bar}\sim34$ (42) km~s$^{-1}$~kpc$^{-1}$ is assumed.

We have learned recently that the inner halo of the Milky Way contains a kinematically coherent component (Gaia-Enceladus) from a significant merger 10 Gyrs ago. By contrast the inner halo (defined to exclude the Magellanic Stream) contains no similar intruder stellar population of billion year age. The tracer we use to set the corresponding upper limit is Gaia asymptotic giant branch stars, rather than Gaia kinematics. The primary sample is drawn from Gaia DR2 with SkyMapper photometry. This is supplemented with PanSTARRS and 2MASS photometry. As the Gaia mission proceeds, a star formation hi…
The solar neighborhood contains disc stars that have recently crossed spiral arms in the Galaxy. We propose that boundaries in local velocity distributions separate stars that have recently crossed or been perturbed by a particular arm from those that haven't. Ridges in the stellar velocity distributions constructed from the second Gaia data release trace orbits that could have touched nearby spiral arms at apocentre or pericentre. The multiple ridges and arcs seen in local velocity distributions are consistent with the presence of multiple spiral features and different pattern speeds and impl…
We present a study of the membership of the Hyades open cluster, derive kinematically-modelled parallaxes of its members, and study the colour-absolute magnitude diagram of the cluster. We use Gaia DR1 Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) data complemented by Hipparcos-2 data for bright stars not contained in TGAS. We supplement the astrometric data with radial velocities collected from a dozen literature sources. By assuming that all cluster members move with the mean cluster velocity to within the velocity dispersion, we use the observed and the expected motions of the stars to determine i…
Based on the second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2) and spectroscopy from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data, we identified 20,089 halo stars kinematically and chemically. The halo streams in the solar neighborhood could be detected in the space of energy and angular momentum. We reshuffle the velocities of these stars to determine the significance of substructure. Finally, we identify 4 statistically significant substructures that are labeled GL-1 through 4. Among these substructures, GL-1 is previously known stream ("N2" stream) and the rest 3 substructu…
We determine the total dynamical density in the solar neighbourhood using the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) catalogue. Astrometric measurements of proper motion and parallax of stars inform us of both the stellar number density distribution and the velocity distribution of stars close to the plane. Assuming equilibrium, these distributions are interrelated through the local dynamical density. For the first time, we do a full joint fit of the velocity and stellar number density distributions while accounting for the astrometric error of individual stars, in the framework of Bayesian Hi…

We have derived accurate distances to Galactic globular clusters by combining data from the Gaia Early Data Release 3 with distances based on Hubble Space telescope HST data and literature based distances. We determine distances either directly from the Gaia EDR3 parallaxes, or kinematically by combining line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles with Gaia EDR3 and HST based proper motion velocity dispersion profiles. We furthermore calculate cluster distances from fitting nearby subdwarfs, whose absolute luminosities we determine from their Gaia EDR3 parallaxes, to globular cluster main-seque…
Clues to the origins and evolution of our Galaxy can be found in the kinematics of stars around us. Remnants of accreted satellite galaxies produce over- densities in velocity-space, which can remain coherent for much longer than spatial over-densities. This chapter reviews a number of studies that have hunted for these accretion relics, both in the nearby solar-neighborhood and the more-distant stellar halo. Many observational surveys have driven this field forwards, from early work with the Hipparcos mission, to contemporary surveys like RAVE & SDSS. This active field continues to flourish, …
We infer the gravitational potential of the Galactic disk by analysing the phase-space densities of 120 stellar samples in 40 spatially separate sub-regions of the solar neighbourhood, using Gaia's second data release (DR2), in order to quantify spatially dependent systematic effects that bias this type of measurement. The gravitational potential was inferred under the assumption of a steady state in the framework of a Bayesian hierarchical model. We performed a joint fit of our stellar tracers' three-dimensional velocity distribution, while fully accounting for the astrometric uncertainties o…
We combine GALEX and Gaia DR2 catalogs to track star formation in the outskirts of our Galaxy. Using photometry, proper motions and parallaxes we identify a structure of ~ 300 OB-type candidates located between 12 and 15 kpc from the Galactic center that are kinematically cold. The structure is located between l = 120 and 200 degrees, above the plane up to ~700 pc and below the plane to ~ 1 kpc. The bulk motion is disk-like; however we measure a mean upward vertical motion of 5.7 +-0.4 km/s, and a mean outward radial motion of between 8 and 16 km/s. The velocity dispersion along the least disp…
We explore the phase-space structure of nearby halo stars identified kinematically from Gaia DR2 data. We focus on their distribution in velocity and in "integrals of motion" space as well as on their photometric properties. Our sample of stars selected to be moving at a relative velocity of at least 210 km/s with respect to the Local Standard of Rest, contains an important contribution from the low rotational velocity tail of the disk(s). The $V_R$-distribution of these stars depicts a small asymmetry similar to that seen for the faster rotating thin disk stars near the Sun. We also identify …
We determine the Milky Way (MW) mass profile inferred from fitting physically motivated models to the Gaia DR2 Galactic rotation curve and other data. Using various hydrodynamical simulations of MW-mass haloes, we show that the presence of baryons induces a contraction of the dark matter (DM) distribution in the inner regions, r<20 kpc. We provide an analytic expression that relates the baryonic distribution to the change in the DM halo profile. For our galaxy, the contraction increases the enclosed DM halo mass by factors of roughly 1.3, 2 and 4 at radial distances of 20, 8 and 1 kpc, respect…
We investigate the frequency of occurrence of Galactic carbon stars as a function of progenitor mass using Gaia data. Small number statistics limit fidelity, but C star frequency agrees with that observed in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) down to $m \approx1.67$ M$_\odot$. At $m \approx 1.38$ M$_\odot$, the frequency rises by a factor of three even though the frequency appears to drop to zero for the MCs. In fact this is due to a lack of clusters at the key age range in the MCs. At $m \approx 1.24$ M$_\odot$ and below, no C stars are observed, corresponding to ages older than 4 Gyr. Within uncert…
Based on the first Gaia data release and spectroscopy from the LAMOST Data Release 4, we study the kinematics and chemistry of the local halo stars. The halo stars are identified kinematically with a relative speed of at least 220 km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the local standard of rest. In total, 436 halo stars are identified. From this halo sample, 16 high velocity (HiVel) stars are identified. We studied the metallicity and [$α$/Fe] distribution of these HiVel stars. Though most of HiVel stars are metal-poor, there are several stars that have metallicity above $-0.5$ dex. To understand the or…
The recent Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) represents an unparalleled revolution in Galactic Archaeology, providing us with numerous radial velocities chemical abundances for millions of stars, with all-sky coverage. We present a new chemical evolution model for the Galactic disc components (high- and low- $α$ sequence stars) designed to reproduce the new abundance ratios provided by the GSP-spec module for the Gaia DR3 and also constrained by the detailed star formation histories for both the thick and thin disc stars inferred from previous Gaia releases. Sophisticated modeling based on previous Ga…
Using the method that was developed in the first paper of this series, we measure the vertical gravitational potential of the Galactic disk from the time-varying structure of the phase-space spiral, using data from Gaia as well as supplementary radial velocity information from legacy spectroscopic surveys. For eleven independent data samples, we inferred gravitational potentials that were in good agreement, despite the data samples' varied and substantial selection effects. Using a model for the baryonic matter densities, we inferred a local halo dark matter density of $0.0085 \pm 0.0039$ M$_\…
We use the first Gaia data release, combined with RAVE and APOGEE spectroscopic surveys, to investigate the origin of halo stars within <~3 kpc from the Sun. We identify halo stars kinematically, as moving with a relative speed of at least 220 km/s with respect to the local standard of rest. These stars are in general more metal-poor than the disk, but surprisingly, half of our halo sample is comprised of stars with [Fe/H]>-1. The orbital directions of these metal-rich halo stars are preferentially aligned with the disk rotation, in sharp contrast with the isotropic orbital distribution of the…
We present an analysis of the kinematics of Galactic disc white dwarf stars in the Solar neighbourhood using data from Gaia Data Release 2. Selection of white dwarfs based on parallax provides the first large, kinematically unbiased sample of Solar neighbourhood white dwarfs to date. Various classical properties of the Solar neighbourhood kinematics have been detected for the first time in the WD population. The disc white dwarf population exhibits a correlation between absolute magnitude and mean age, which we exploit to obtain an independent estimate of the Solar motion with respect to the L…
We present a detailed analysis of kinematics of the Milky Way disk in solar neighborhood using GAIA DR3 catalog. To determine the local kinematics of the stellar disks of the Milky Way galaxy we use a complete sample of 278,228 red giant branch (RGB) stars distributed in a cylinder, centered at the Sun with a 1 kpc radius and half-height of 0.5 kpc. We determine separately the kinematical properties of RGB stars for each Galactic hemisphere in search for possible asymmetries. The kinematical properties of the RGB stars reveal the existence of two kinematically distinct components: the thin dis…
Although the stellar halo accounts for just ~1% of the total stellar mass of the Milky Way, the kinematics of halo stars encode valuable information about the origins and evolution of our Galaxy. It has been shown that the high transverse velocity stars in Gaia DR2 reveal a double sequence in the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram, indicating a bifurcation in the local stellar halo within 1 kpc. We fit these stars by updating the popular Besançon/Galaxia model, incorporating the latest observational results for the stellar halo and an improved kinematic description for the thick-disk from Schönr…
We show how astrometric and spectroscopic errors introduced by an unresolved binary system can be combined to give estimates of the binary period and mass ratio. This can be performed analytically if we assume we see one or more full orbits over our observational baseline, or numerically for all other cases. We apply this method to Gaia DR3 data, combining the most recent astrometric and spectroscopic data. We compare inferred periods and mass ratios calculated using our method with orbital parameters measured for non-single stars in Gaia DR3 and find good agreement. Finally, we use this metho…
We use the distribution of accreted stars in SDSS-Gaia DR2 to demonstrate that a non-trivial fraction of the dark matter halo within Galactocentric radii of 7.5-10 kpc and $|z| > 2.5$ kpc is in substructure, and thus may not be in equilibrium. Using a mixture likelihood analysis, we separate the contributions of an old, isotropic stellar halo and a younger anisotropic population. The latter dominates and is uniform within the region studied. It can be explained as the tidal debris of a disrupted massive satellite on a highly radial orbit, and is consistent with mounting evidence from recent st…
Stellar streams are ubiquitous in the Galactic halo and they can be used to improve our understanding of the formation and evolution of the Milky Way as a whole. The so-called Monoceros Ring might have been the result of satellite accretion. Guglielmo et al. have used N-body simulations to search for the progenitor of this structure. Their analysis shows that, if the Ring has a dwarf galaxy progenitor, it might be found in the background of one out of eight specific areas in the sky. Here, we use Gaia DR2 data to perform a systematic exploration aimed at confirming or rejecting this remarkable…
Our location in the Milky Way provides an exceptional opportunity to gain insight on the galactic evolution processes, and complement the information inferred from observations of external galaxies. Since the Milky Way is a barred galaxy, the study of motions of individual stars in the bulge and disc is useful to understand the role of the bar. The Gaia mission enables such study by providing the most precise parallaxes and proper motions to date. In this theoretical work, we explore the effects of the bar on the distribution of higher-order moments --the skewness and kurtosis-- of the proper …
We point out an anti-correlation between the central dark matter (DM) densities of the bright Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) and their orbital pericenter distances inferred from Gaia data. The dSphs that have not come close to the Milky Way center (like Fornax, Carina and Sextans) are less dense in DM than those that have come closer (like Draco and Ursa Minor). The same anti-correlation cannot be inferred for the ultra-faint dSphs due to large scatter. Including ultra-faints, a trend that dSphs with more extended stellar distributions tend to have lower DM densities emerges. A fr…
We cross-match the Alma catalog of OB stars with Gaia DR2 astrometry and photometry as a first step towards producing a clean sample of massive stars in the solar neighbourhood with a high degree of completeness. We analyze the resulting colour-absolute magnitude diagram to divide our sample into categories and compare extinction estimates from two sources, finding problems with both of them. The distances obtained with three different priors are found to have few differences among them, indicating that Gaia DR2 distances are robust. An analysis of the 3-D distribution of massive stars in the …
We study the dynamical properties of halo stars located in the Solar Neighbourhood. Our goal is to explore how the properties of the halo depend on the selection criteria used for defining a sample of halo stars. Once this is understood we proceed to measure the shape and orientation of the halo's velocity ellipsoid and we use this information to put constraints on the gravitational potential of the Galaxy. We use the recently released Gaia DR1 catalogue cross-matched to the RAVE dataset for our analysis. We develop a dynamical criterion based on the distribution function of stars in various G…
The low-metallicity, kinematically interesting dwarf stars studied by Stephens \& Boesgaard (2002, SB02) are re-examined using Gaia DR2 astrometry, and updated model atmospheres and atomic line data. New stellar parameters are determined based on the Gaia DR2 parallactic distances and Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database isochrones. These are in excellent agreement with spectroscopically determined stellar parameters for stars with [Fe/H]$>-2$; however, large disagreements are found for stars with [Fe/H]$\le-2$, with offsets as large as $Δ$T$_{\rm eff}\sim+500$ K and $Δ$log\,$g\sim+1.0$. A sub…
Knowledge of ages for stars formed over a galaxy's lifetime is fundamental to understand its formation and evolution. However, stellar ages are difficult to obtain since they cannot be measured from observations, being comparison with stellar models (Soderblom 2010) required. Alternatively, age distributions can be derived applying the robust technique of colour-magnitude diagram fitting (Gallart et al. 2005), till now mainly employed to study nearby galaxies. The new distances to individual Milky Way stars from the Gaia mission (Brown et al. 2018) have allowed us to use this technique to deri…
Galaxy formation entails the hierarchical assembly of mass, along with the condensation of baryons and the ensuing, self-regulating star formation. The stars form a collisionless system whose orbit distribution retains dynamical memory that can constrain a galaxy's formation history. The ordered-rotation dominated orbits with near maximum circularity $λ_z \simeq1$ and the random-motion dominated orbits with low circularity $λ_z \simeq0$ are called kinematically cold and kinematically hot, respectively. The fraction of stars on `cold' orbits, compared to the fraction of stars on `hot' orbits, s…
The dominant site of production of $r$-process elements remains unclear despite recent observations of a neutron star merger. Observational constraints on the properties of the sites can be obtained by comparing $r$-process abundances in different environments. The recent Gaia data releases and large samples from high-resolution optical spectroscopic surveys are enabling us to compare $r$-process element abundances between stars formed in an accreted dwarf galaxy, Gaia-Enceladus, and those formed in the Milky Way. We aim to understand the origin of $r$-process elements in Gaia-Enceladus. We fi…
Context. The study of the oldest and most metal-poor stars in our Galaxy promotes our understanding of the Galactic chemical evolution and the beginning of Galaxy and star formation. However, they are notoriously difficult to find, with only five stars at $\mathrm{[Fe/H]<-5.0}$ having been detected to date. Thus, the spectrophotometric data of 219 million sources which became available in the third Gaia Data Release comprise a very promising dataset for the identification of metal-poor stars. Aims. We want to use the low-resolution Gaia Blue Photometer / Red Photometer (BP/RP) spectra to ident…

The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) observed many open clusters as part of its programme to spectroscopically characterise the various Milky Way populations. GES spectroscopy and Gaia astrometry from its second data release are used here to assign membership probabilities to targets towards 32 open clusters with ages from 1-3800 Myr, based on maximum likelihood modelling of the 3D kinematics of the cluster and field populations. From a parent catalogue of 14398 individual targets, 5033 stars with uniformly determined 3D velocities, $T_{\rm eff}$, $\log g$ and chemistry are assigned cluster membership wi…
The Blanco DECam Bulge Survey (BDBS) has imaged more than 200 square degrees of the southern Galactic bulge, providing photometry in the ugrizy filters for $\sim 250$ million unique stars. The presence of a strong foreground disk population, along with complex reddening and extreme image crowding, has made it difficult to constrain the presence of young and intermediate age stars in the bulge population. We employed an accurate cross-match of BDBS with the latest data release (EDR3) from the Gaia mission, matching more than 140 million sources with BDBS photometry and Gaia EDR3 photometry and …
We use accurate estimates of aluminium abundance provided as part of the APOGEE Data Release 17 and Gaia Early Data Release 3 astrometry to select a highly pure sample of stars with metallicity $-1.5\lesssim {\rm [Fe/H]}\lesssim 0.5$ born in-situ in the Milky Way proper. We show that the low-metallicity ([Fe/H]$\lesssim -1.3$) in-situ component that we dub Aurora is kinematically hot with an approximately isotropic velocity ellipsoid and a modest net rotation. Aurora stars exhibit large scatter in metallicity and in a number of element abundance ratios. The median tangential velocity of the in…
Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are excellent laboratories to explore the radiation-driven implosion mode of star formation because they show evidence of triggered star formation. In our previous study, BRC 18 has been found to accelerate away from the direction of the ionizing Hii region because of the well known "Rocket Effect". Based on the assumption that both BRC 18 and the candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) are kinematically coupled and using the latest Gaia EDR3 measurements, we found that the relative proper motions of the candidate YSOs exhibit a tendency of moving away from the ioniz…
The tidal disruption of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy has generated a spectacular stream of stars wrapping around the entire Galaxy. We use data from $Gaia$ and the H3 Stellar Spectroscopic Survey to identify 823 high-quality Sagittarius members based on their angular momenta. The H3 Survey is largely unbiased in metallicity, and so our sample of Sagittarius members is similarly unbiased. Stream stars span a wide range in [Fe/H] from $-0.2$ to $\approx -3.0$, with a mean overall metallicity of $\langle$[Fe/H]$\rangle=-0.99$. We identify a strong metallicity-dependence to the kinematics of the s…
Measurements of [Fe/H] and radial velocity are presented for 89 RR Lyrae (RRL) candidates within 6 kpc of the Sun. After removal of two suspected non-RRL, these stars were added to an existing database, which yielded 464 RRL with [Fe/H] on a homogeneous scale. Using data from the Gaia satellite (Data Release 2), we calculated the positions and space velocities for this sample. These data confirm the existence of a thin-disc of RRL with [alpha/Fe] ~ solar. The majority of the halo RRL with large total energies have near zero angular momenta about the Z axis. Kinematically these stars closely re…
We identify members of 65 open clusters in the solar neighborhood using the machine-learning algorithm StarGO based on Gaia EDR3 data. After adding members of twenty clusters from previous studies (Pang et al. 2021a,b; Li et al. 2021) we obtain 85 clusters, and study their morphology and kinematics. We classify the substructures outside the tidal radius into four categories: filamentary (f1) and fractal (f2) for clusters $<100$ Myr, and halo (h) and tidal-tail (t) for clusters $>100$ Myr. The kinematical substructures of f1-type clusters are elongated; these resemble the disrupted cluster Grou…
Previous studies based on the analysis of Gaia DR2 data have revealed that accreted stars, possibly originating from a single progenitor satellite, are a significant component of the halo of our Galaxy, potentially constituting most of the halo stars at $\rm [Fe/H] < -1$ within a few kpc from the Sun and beyond. In this paper, we couple astrometric data from Gaia DR2 with elemental abundances from APOGEE DR14 to characterize the kinematics and chemistry of in-situ and accreted populations up to $\rm [Fe/H] \sim -2$. Accreted stars appear to significantly impact the Galactic chemo-kinematic rel…
We present a new catalog of 40502 globular cluster (GC) candidates in NGC 5128 out to a projected radius of $\sim$150 kpc, based on data from the Panoramic Imaging Survey of Centaurus and Sculptor (PISCeS), Gaia Data Release 2, and the NOAO Source Catalog. Ranking these candidates based on the likelihood that they are true GCs, we find that approximately 1900 belong to our top two ranking categories and should be the highest priority for spectroscopic follow-up for confirmation. Taking into account our new data and a vetting of previous GC catalogs, we estimate a total GC population of $1450 \…
We perform analysis of the three-dimensional kinematics of Milky Way disk stars in mono-age populations. We focus on stars between Galactocentric distances of $R=6$ and 14 \,kpc, selected from the combined LAMOST DR4 red clump giant stars and Gaia DR2 proper motion catalogue. We confirm the 3D asymmetrical motions of recent works and provide time tagging of the Galactic outer disk asymmetrical motions near the anticenter direction out to Galactocentric distances of 14\,kpc. Radial Galactocentric motions reach values up to 10 km s$^{-1}$, depending on the age of the population, and present a no…
We report the serendipitous discovery of three new open clusters, named UFMG 1, UFMG 2 and UFMG 3 in the field of the intermediate-age cluster NGC 5999, by using Gaia DR2 data. A colour-magnitude filter tailored for a proper selection of main-sequence stars and red clump giants turned evident the presence of NGC 5999 and these three new stellar groups in proper motion space. Their structural parameters were derived from King-profile fittings over their projected stellar distributions and isochrone fits were performed on the clusters cleaned colour-magnitude diagrams built with Gaia bands to de…
A comprehensive kinematic model of the LMC disk from star clusters and field stars using Gaia DR3: Tracing the disk characteristics, rotation, bar, and the outliers
Recent observational studies identified a foreground stellar sub-structure traced by red clump (RC) stars (~ 12 kpc in front of the main body) in the eastern regions of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and suggested that it formed during the formation of the Magellanic Bridge (MB), due to the tidal interaction of the Magellanic Clouds. Previous studies investigated this feature only up to 4.0 deg from the centre of the SMC due to the limited spatial coverage of the data and hence could not find a physical connection with the MB. To determine the spatial extent and properties of this foreground…
Because of its particular orientation around the Galaxy - i.e., in a plane nearly perpendicular to the Galactic plane and containing both the Sun and Galactic center - the Sagittarius (Sgr) stream provides a powerful means by which to measure the solar reflex velocity, and thereby infer the velocity of the Local Standard of Rest (LSR), in a way that is independent of assumptions about the solar Galactocentric distance. Moreover, the solar reflex velocity with respect to the stream is projected almost entirely into the proper motion component of Sgr stream stars perpendicular to the Sgr plane, …
The Gaia DR2 catalog is the best source of stellar astrometric and photometric data available today. The history of the Milky Way galaxy is written in stone in this data set. Parallaxes and photometry tell us where the stars are today, when were they formed, and with what chemical content, i.e. their star formation history (SFH). We develop a Bayesian hierarchical model suited to reconstruct the SFH of a resolved stellar population. We study the stars brighter than $G\,=\,15$ within 100 pc of the Sun in Gaia DR2 and derive a SFH of the solar neighbourhood in agreement with previous determinati…
The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has already begun to discover what will ultimately be thousands of exoplanets around nearby cool bright stars. These potential host stars must be well-understood to accurately characterize exoplanets at the individual and population levels. We present a catalogue of the chemo-kinematic properties of 2,218,434 stars in the TESS Candidate Target List using survey data from Gaia DR2, APOGEE, GALAH, RAVE, LAMOST, and photometrically-derived stellar properties from SkyMapper. We compute kinematic thin disc, thick disc, and halo membership probabiliti…
In the Gaia era, the majority of stars in the Solar neighbourhood have parallaxes and proper motions precisely determined while spectroscopic age indicators are still missing for a large fraction of low-mass young stars. In this work we select 756 overluminous late K and early M young star candidates in the southern sky and observe them over 64 nights with the ANU 2.3m Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory using the Echelle (R=24,000) and Wide Field spectrographs (WiFeS, R=3000-7000). Our selection is kinematically unbiased to minimize the preference against low-mass members of stellar associ…
We risk reaching false scientific conclusions if we test our physical theories against subsets of the Gaia catalogue without correcting for the biased process by which stars make it into our sample. In this paper we produce selection functions for three Gaia science samples to enable the community to correct for this bias. We estimate the probability that a source in Gaia EDR3 will have i) a reported parallax and proper motion, ii) an astrometric renormalised unit weight error below 1.4, or iii) a reported radial velocity. These selection functions are estimated as a function of $G$-band appar…
