Kink dynamics in the underdamped and strongly discrete sine-Gordon lattice that is driven by the oscillating force is studied. The investigation is focused mostly on the properties of the mode-locked states in the {\it overband} case, when the driving frequency lies above the linear band. With the help of Floquet theory it is demonstrated that the destabilizing of the mode-locked state happens either through the Hopf bifurcation or through the tangential bifurcation. It is also observed that in the overband case the standing mode-locked kink state maintains its stability for the bias amplitudes that are by the order of magnitude larger than the amplitudes in the low-frequency case.
Evolution of the nonequilibrium inhomogeneities and topological defects is studied in terms of complex kink solutions of the sine-Gordon equation. The weakly damped oscillation of the sine-Gordon kink, named as the kink quasimode, is described explicitly. It is shown that the oscillatory kink behavior and the wave packet generation depend significantly on the initial nonequilibrium kink profile. In order to specify conditions of the generation of wobbling kinks with a multibreather structure we reformulate the direct scattering problem associated with the SG equation as the spectral problem of…
We prove the existence of an infinite number of internal (shape) modes of sine-Gordon solitons in the presence of some inhomogeneous long-range forces, provided some conditions are satisfied.
We consider radial sine-Gordon kinks in two, three and higher dimensions. A full two dimensional simulation showing that azimuthal perturbations remain small allows to reduce the problem to the one dimensional radial sine-Gordon equation. We solve this equation on an interval $[r_0,r_1]$ and absorb all outgoing radiation. Before collision the kink is well described by a simple law derived from the conservation of energy. In two dimensions for $r_0 \le 2$, the collision disintegrates the kink into a fast breather while for $r_0 \ge 4$ we obtain a kink-breather meta-stable state where breathers …
The main focus of the present work is to study quasi-one-dimensional kink-antikink stripes embedded in the two-dimensional sine-Gordon equation. Using variational techniques, we reduce the interaction dynamics between a kink and an antikink stripe on their respective time and space dependent widths and locations. The resulting reduced system of coupled equations is found to accurately describe the width and undulation dynamics of a single kink stripe as well as that of interacting ones. As an aside, we also discuss two related topics: the computational identification of the kink center and its…

A model of soliton-defect interactions in the sine-Gordon equations is studied using singular perturbation theory. Melnikov theory is used to derive a critical velocity for strong interactions, which is shown to be exponentially small for weak defects. Matched asymptotic expansions for nearly heteroclinic orbits are constructed for the initial value problem, which are then used to derive analytical formulas for the locations of the well known two- and three-bounce resonance windows, as well as several other phenomena seen in numerical simulations.
We consider kink-antikink collisions in the topological discrete sine-Gordon system. We find that the TDSG kink supports extra internal modes of vibration and this results in resonance effects of the kind seen for the continuum phi^4 theory.
A spatially-discrete sine-Gordon system with some novel features is described. There is a topological or Bogomol'nyi lower bound on the energy of a kink, and an explicit static kink which saturates this bound. There is no Peierls potential barrier, and consequently the motion of a kink is simpler, especially at low speeds. At higher speeds, it radiates and slows down.
The scattering of kinks and low-frequency breathers of the nonlinear sine-Gordon (SG) equation on a spatially localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation (defect) with a balanced gain and loss is investigated numerically. It is demonstrated that if a kink passes the defect, it always restores its initial momentum and energy and the only effect of the interaction with the defect is a phase shift of the kink. A kink approaching the defect from the gain side always passes, while in the opposite case it must have sufficiently large initial momentum to pass through the defect instead of being t…
The (2+1)-dimension Klein-Gordon generalised equation is numerically solved through the finite differences method. Only the sine-Gordon case is focused: kink and antikink solutions are obtained in cartesian coordinates and evidence of interaction in kink-kink collision is looked for in propagation velocity. Then the change of shape in light bullet solutions is quantified during propagation and in head-on collision. Lastly, the robustness of light bullets is verified in head-on collisions with kink, antikink, standing kink and standing breather. A 30o-collision between a light bullet and a stan…
We demonstrate that $π$-kinks exist in non-parametrically ac driven sine-Gordon systems if the ac drive is sufficiently fast. It is found that, at a critical value of the drive amplitude, there are two stable and two unstable equilibria in the sine-Gordon phase. The pairwise symmetry of these equilibria implies the existence of a one-parameter family of $π$-kink solutions in the reduced system. In the dissipative case of the ac driven sine-Gordon systems, corresponding to Josephson junctions, the velocity is selected by the balance between the perturbations. The results are derived from a pert…
We study numerically the kink-fermion interactions in a 1+1 dimensional toy model, which describes sine-Gordon kinks coupled to the massless Dirac fermions with backreaction. We show that the spectrum of fermionic modes strongly depends on the choice of the coupling, in particular, there are no localized modes for a minimal Yukawa coupling. We analyze the scattering of the fermionic packet by the kink. We demonstrate that the outcome of the collision dynamically depends on the phase of the incoming fermion packet, it results in alternating regimes of positive and negative acceleration of the k…
We propose a system of sine-Gordon equations, with the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry represented by balanced gain and loss in them. The equations are coupled by sine-field terms and first-order derivatives. The sinusoidal coupling stems from local interaction between adjacent particles in the coupled Frenkel-Kontorova (FK) chains and related sine-lattices, while the cross-derivative coupling, which was not considered before, is induced by \emph{three-particle} interactions, provided that the particles in the parallel FK\ chains move in different directions. Nonlinear wave structures are then studied…
In this paper, we numerically study the scattering of kinks in the noncanonical sine-Gordon model using Fourier spectral methods. The model depends on two free parameters, which control the localized inner structure in the energy density and the characteristics of the scattering potential. It has been conjectured that the kink solutions in the noncanonical model possess inner structures in their energy density, and the presence of these yields bound states and resonance structures for some relative velocities between the kink and the antikink. In the numerical study, we observed that the class…
We consider the propagation of sine-Gordon kinks in a planar curved strip as a model of nonlinear wave propagation in curved wave guides. The homogeneous Neumann transverse boundary conditions, in the curvilinear coordinates, allow to assume a homogeneous kink solution. Using a simple collective variable approach based on the kink coordinate, we show that curved regions act as potential barriers for the wave and determine the threshold velocity for the kink to cross. The analysis is confirmed by numerical solution of the 2D sine-Gordon equation.
Nonlinear space-time dynamics, defined in terms of celebrated 'solitonic' equations, brings indispensable tools for understanding, prediction and control of complex behaviors in both physical and life sciences. In this paper, we review sine-Gordon solitons, kinks and breathers as models of nonlinear excitations in complex systems in physics and in living cellular structures, both intra-cellular (DNA, protein folding and microtubules) and inter-cellular (neural impulses and muscular contractions). Key words: Sine-Gordon solitons, kinks and breathers, DNA, Protein folding, Microtubules, Neural c…
We study effects of Kac-Baker long-range dispersive interaction (LRI) between particles on kink properties in the discrete sine-Gordon model. We show that the kink width increases indefinitely as the range of LRI grows only in the case of strong interparticle coupling. On the contrary, the kink becomes intrinsically localized if the coupling is under some critical value. Correspondingly, the Peierls-Nabarro barrier vanishes as the range of LRI increases for supercritical values of the coupling but remains finite for subcritical values. We demonstrate that LRI essentially transforms the interna…
We study kink-antikink collisions in a particular case of the double sine-Gordon model depending on only one parameter $r$. The scattering process of large kink-antikink shows the changing of the topological sector. For some parameter intervals we observed two connected effects: the production of up to five antikink-kink pairs and up to three solitary oscillations. The scattering process for small kink-antikink has several possibilities: the changing of the topological sector, one-bounce collision, two-bounce collision, or formation of a bion state. In particular, we observed for small values …
We consider the existence and spectral stability of static multi-kink structures in the discrete sine-Gordon equation, as a representative example of the family of discrete Klein-Gordon models. The multi-kinks are constructed using Lin's method from an alternating sequence of well-separated kink and antikink solutions. We then locate the point spectrum associated with these multi-kink solutions by reducing the spectral problem to a matrix equation. For an $m$-structure multi-kink, there will be $m$ eigenvalues in the point spectrum near each eigenvalue of the primary kink, and, as long as the …
We study collisions of two, three, and four kinks of the double sine-Gordon model. The initial conditions are taken in a special form in order to provide collision of all kinks in one point. We obtain dependences of the maximal energy densities on the model parameter. We also analyze the final states observed in these collisions.
We consider the reflectionless transport of sine-Gordon solitons on a line. Transparent boundary conditions for the sine-Gordon equation on a line are derived using the so-called potential approach. Our numerical implementation of these novel boundary conditions proves the absence of the backscattering in transmission of sine-Gordon solitons through the boundary of the considered finite domains.
We studied the kink-antikink collision process for the "double sine-Gordon" (DSG) equation in 1+1 dimensions at different values of the potential parameter $R>0$. For small values of $R$ we discuss the problem of resonance frequencies. We give qualitative explanation of the frequency shift in comparison with the frequency of the discrete level in the potential well of isolated kink. We show that in this region of the parameter $R$ the effective long-range interaction between kink and antikink takes place.
We study whether or not sine-Gordon kinks exhibit internal modes or ``quasimodes.'' By considering the response of the kinks to ac forces and initial distortions, we show that neither intrinsic internal modes nor ``quasimodes'' exist in contrast to previous reports. However, we do identify a different kind of internal mode bifurcating from the bottom edge of the phonon band which arises from the discretization of the system in the numerical simulations, thus confirming recent predictions.
We consider effectively one-dimensional planar and radial kinks in two-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon models and focus on the sine-Gordon model and the $ϕ^4$ variants thereof. We adapt an adiabatic invariant formulation recently developed for nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations, and we study the transverse stability of these kinks. This enables us to characterize one-dimensional planar kinks as solitonic filaments, whose stationary states and corresponding spectral stability can be characterized not only in the homogeneous case, but also in the presence of external potentials. Beyond that, t…
We study the sine-Gordon kink diffusion at finite temperature in the overdamped limit. By means of a general perturbative approach, we calculate the first- and second-order (in temperature) contributions to the diffusion coefficient. We compare our analytical predictions with numerical simulations. The good agreement allows us to conclude that, up to temperatures where kink-antikink nucleation processes cannot be neglected, a diffusion constant linear and quadratic in temperature gives a very accurate description of the diffusive motion of the kink. The quadratic temperature dependence is show…
We analyze the diffusive motion of kink solitons governed by the thermal sine-Gordon equation. We analytically calculate the correlation function of the position of the kink center as well as the diffusion coefficient, both up to second-order in temperature. We find that the kink behavior is very similar to that obtained in the overdamped limit: There is a quadratic dependence on temperature in the diffusion coefficient that comes from the interaction among the kink and phonons, and the average value of the wave function increases with $\sqrt{t}$ due to the variance of the centers of individua…
We study the collision of a kink and an antikink in the double sine-Gordon model with and without the excited vibrational mode. In the latter case, we find that there is a limited range of the parameters where the resonance windows exist, despite the existence of a vibrational mode. Still, when the vibrational mode is initially excited, its energy can turn into translational energy after the collision. This creates one-bounce as well as a rich structure of higher-bounce resonance windows that depend on the wobbling phase being in or out of phase at the collision and the wobbling amplitude bein…
We study the kink-antikink scattering within the double sine-Gordon model. In the numerical simulations we found a critical value $v_{cr}$ of the initial velocity $v_{in}$, which separates two different scenarios: at $v_{in}<v_{cr}$ the kinks capture each other and form a bound state, while at $v_{in}>v_{cr}$ the kinks pass through each other and escape to infinities. We obtain non-monotonous dependence of $v_{cr}$ on the model parameter $R$. Besides that, at some initial velocities below $v_{cr}$ we observe formation and interaction of the so-called oscillons (new phenomenon), as well as esca…
We study properties of the localized solitons to the sine-Gordon equation excited on the attractive impurity by a moving kink. The cases of one- and two-dimensional spatially extended impurities are considered. For the case of one-dimensional impurity the possibility of excitation of the first even and odd high-amplitude impurity modes by the moving kink is demonstrated. For the case of two-dimensional impurity we show the possibility of excitation of the nonlinear high-amplitude waves of new type called here breathing pulson and breathing 2D soliton. We suggest different analytical expression…
We study the scattering of kink and antikink of the double sine-Gordon model. There is a critical value of the initial velocity $v_{cr}$ of the colliding kinks, which separates different regimes of the collision. At $v_{in}>v_{cr}$ we observe kinks reflection, while at $v_{in}<v_{cr}$ their interaction is complicated with capture and escape windows. We obtain the dependence of $v_{cr}$ on the parameter of the model. This dependence possesses a series of local maxima, which has not been reported by other authors. At some initial velocities below the critical value we observe a new phenomenon --…
In this report, the various 1D single soliton and multi-soliton solutions of the Sine-Gordon equation are explored. First the topological kink solitons and their properties for the Sine-Gordon, as well as the $ϕ^{4}$ model are investigated. This includes energy and momentum conservation laws for both models, as well as static kinks and antikinks. The Bogomol'nyi equation and the importance of Lorentz invariance are also discussed. Then in the second half, the focus is on Sine-Gordon multi-kink solutions, which are found by a separation of variables method rather than using inverse scattering o…
Recently, the method of one-dimensional maps was introduced as a means of generating exceptional discretisations of the $ϕ^4$-theories, i.e., discrete $ϕ^4$-models which support kinks centred at a continuous range of positions relative to the lattice. In this paper, we employ this method to obtain exceptional discretisations of the sine-Gordon equation (i.e. exceptional Frenkel-Kontorova chains). We also use one-dimensional maps to construct a discrete sine-Gordon equation supporting kinks moving with arbitrary velocities without emitting radiation.
We have examined the dynamical behavior of the kink solutions of the one-dimensional sine-Gordon equation in the presence of a spatially periodic parametric perturbation. Our study clarifies and extends the currently available knowledge on this and related nonlinear problems in four directions. First, we present the results of a numerical simulation program which are not compatible with the existence of a radiative threshold, predicted by earlier calculations. Second, we carry out a perturbative calculation which helps interpret those previous predictions, enabling us to understand in depth ou…
Sine-Gordon kinks are a much studied integrable system that possesses multi-soliton solutions. Recent studies on sine-Gordon kinks with space-dependent square-well-type potentials have revealed interesting dynamics of a single kink interacting with wells and barriers. In this paper, we study a class of smooth space-dependent potentials and discuss the dynamics of one kink in the presence of different wells. We also present values for the critical velocity for different types of barriers. Furthermore, we study two kinks interacting with various wells and describe interesting trajectories such a…
In our recent study the maximal values of kinetic and potential energy densities that can be achieved in the collisions of $N$ slow kinks in the sine-Gordon model were calculated analytically (for $N=1,2$, and 3) and numerically (for $4\le N\le 7$). However, for many physical applications it is important to know not only the total potential energy density but also its two components (the on-site potential energy density and the elastic strain energy density) as well as the extreme values of the elastic strain, tensile (positive) and compressive (negative). In the present study we give (i) the …
In Ref.[1] [Phys. Rev. B. {\bf 42}, 2290 (1990)] we used a rigorous projection operator collective variable formalism for nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations to prove the continuum Sine-Gordon (SG) equation has a long lived quasimode whose frequency $ω_s$= 1.004 $Γ_0$ is in the continuum just above the lower phonon band edge with a lifetime ($1/τ_s$) = 0.0017 $Γ_0$. We confirmed the analytic calculations by simulations which agreed very closely with the analytic results. In Ref.[3] [Phys. Rev. E. {\bf 62}, R60 (2000)] the authors performed two numerical investigations which they asserted ``show t…
In this reply to the comment by C. R. Willis, we show, by quoting his own statements, that the simulations reported in his original work with Boesch [Phys. Rev. B 42, 2290 (1990)] were done for kinks with nonzero initial velocity, in contrast to what Willis claims in his comment. We further show that his alleged proof, which assumes among other approximations that kinks are initially at rest, is not rigorous but an approximation. Moreover, there are other serious misconceptions which we discuss in our reply. As a consequence, our result that quasimodes do not exist in the sG equation [Phys. Re…
To study the propagation of nonlinear waves across Y- and T-type junctions, we consider the 2D sine--Gordon equation as a model and study the dynamics of kinks and breathers in such geometries. The comparison of the energies reveals that the angle of the fork plays no role. Motivated by this, we introduce a 1D effective equation whose solutions agree well with the 2D simulations for kink and breather solutions. For branches of equal width, breather crossing occurs approximately when $v > 1 - ω$, where $v$ is the breather celerity and $ω$ is its frequency. We then characterize the breathers in …
Dynamics of sine-Gordon kinks in the presence of rapidly varying periodic perturbations of different physical origins is described analytically and numerically. The analytical approach is based on asymptotic expansions, and it allows to derive, in a rigorous way, an effective nonlinear equation for the slowly varying field component in any order of the asymptotic procedure as expansions in the small parameter $ω^{-1}$, $ω$ being the frequency of the rapidly varying ac driving force. Three physically important examples of such a dynamics, {\em i.e.}, kinks driven by a direct or parametric ac fo…
We investigate a mechanical system consisting of infinite number of harmonically coupled pendulums which can impact on two rigid rods. Because of gravitational force the system has two degenerate ground states. The related topological kink - likely the simplest one presented in literature so far - is a compacton, that is it has strictly finite extension. In the present paper we elucidate the relation of such system with sine-Gordon model. Also, solutions describing waves with large amplitude, and an asymptotic formula for the width of the kink are obtained.
A parametrically forced sine-Gordon equation with a fast periodic {\em mean-zero} forcing is considered. It is shown that $π$-kinks represent a class of solitary-wave solutions of the equation. This result is applied to quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnets with an easy plane anisotropy, in a rapidly oscillating magnetic field. In this case the $π$-kink solution we have introduced corresponds to the uniform ``true'' domain wall motion, since the magnetization directions on opposite sides of the wall are anti-parallel. In contrast to previous work, no additional anisotropy is required to obtain a …
It is shown that the topological discrete sine-Gordon system introduced by Speight and Ward models the dynamics of an infinite uniform chain of electric dipoles constrained to rotate in a plane containing the chain. Such a chain admits a novel type of static kink solution which may occupy any position relative to the spatial lattice and experiences no Peierls-Nabarro barrier. Consequently the dynamics of a single kink is highly continuum like, despite the strongly discrete nature of the model. Static multikinks and kink-antikink pairs are constructed, and it is shown that all such static solut…

In this paper we consider two models of soliton dynamics (the sine Gordon and the ϕ^4 equations) on a 1-dimensional lattice. We are interested in particular in the behavior of their kink-like solutions inside the Peierls- Nabarro barrier and its variation as a function of the discreteness parameter. We find explicitly the asymptotic states of the system for any value of the discreteness parameter and the rates of decay of the initial data to these asymptotic states. We show that genuinely periodic solutions are possible and we identify the regimes of the discreteness parameter for which they a…
Recently for the sine-Gordon equation it has been established that during collisions of $N$ slow kinks maximal energy density increases as $N^2$. In this numerical study, the same scaling rule is established for the non-integrable $ϕ^4$ model for $N\le 5$. For odd (even) $N$ the maximal energy density is in the form of potential (kinetic) energy density. Maximal elastic strain is also calculated. In addition, the effect of the kink's internal modes on the maximal energy density is analysed for $N=1, 2, 3$. Our results suggest that in multi-soliton collisions very high energy density can be ach…

In this work we deform the phi^4 model with distinct deformation functions, to propose a diversity of sine-Gordon-like models. We investigate the proposed models and we obtain all the topological solutions they engender. In particular, we introduce non-polynomial potentials which support some exotic two-kink solutions.
We consider a spatially non-autonomous discrete sine-Gordon equation with constant forcing and its continuum limit(s) to model a 0-$π$ Josephson junction with an applied bias current. The continuum limits correspond to the strong coupling limit of the discrete system. The non-autonomous character is due to the presence of a discontinuity point, namely a jump of $π$ in the sine-Gordon phase. The continuum models admits static solitary waves which are called $π$-kinks and are attached to the discontinuity point. For small forcing, there are three types of $π$-kinks. We show that one of the kinks…
We investigate generalizations of the $ϕ^4$ and sine-Gordon models, including interactions with Dirac Fermions. We observe new resonance phenomena by taking the fermion back-reaction into account. First, we show that the vibrational mode responsible for the resonance structure of the $ϕ^4$ model has the same frequency as the energy of the fermion excited state when the back-reaction becomes more significant. Second, we consider the sine-Gordon model with the addition of a fermion field and find that a resonant structure appears, despite the absence of a scalar vibrational mode. The vibrational…
The generalized sine-Gordon (sG) equation was derived as an integrable generalization of the sG equation. In this paper, we develop a direct method for solving the generalized sG equation without recourse to the inverse scattering method. In particular, we construct multisoliton solutions in the form of parametric representation. We obtain a variety of solutions which include kinks, loop solitons and breathers. The properties of these olutions are investigated in detail. We find a novel type of solitons with a peculiar structure that the smaller soliton travels faster than the larger soliton. …
In this work we analyze the possibility that soliton dynamics in a simple nonlinear model allows functionally relevant predictions of the behaviour of DNA. This suggestion was first put forward by Salerno [Phys. Rev. A, vol. 44, p. 5292 (1991)] by showing results indicating that sine-Gordon kinks were set in motion at certain regions of a DNA sequence that include promoters. We revisit that system and show that the observed behaviour has nothing to do with promoters; on the contrary, it originates from the bases at the boundary, which are not part of the studied genome. We explain this phenome…
