We report the PACS-100um/160um detections of a sample of 42 GALEX-selected and FIR-detected Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z ~ 1 located in the COSMOS field and analyze their ultra-violet (UV) to far-infrared (FIR) properties. The detection of these LBGs in the FIR indicates that they have a dust content high enough so that its emission can be directly detected. According to a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with stellar population templates to their UV-to-near-IR observed photometry, PACS-detected LBGs tend to be bigger, more massive, dustier, redder in the UV continuum, and UV-brighter than PACS-undetected LBGs. PACS-detected LBGs at z ~ 1 are mostly disk-like galaxies and are located over the green-valley and red sequence of the color-magnitude diagram of galaxies at their redshift. By using their UV and IR emission, we find that PACS-detected LBGs tend to be less dusty and have slightly higher total star-formation rates (SFRs) than other PACS-detected UV-selected galaxies within their same redshift range. As a consequence of the selection effect due to the depth of the FIR observations employed, all our PACS-detected LBGs are LIRGs. However, none of them are in the ULIRG regime, where the FIR observations are complete. The finding of ULIRGs-LBGs at higher redshifts suggests an evolution of the FIR emission of LBGs with cosmic time. In an IRX-$β$ diagram, PACS-detected LBGs at z ~ 1 tend to be located around the relation for local starburst similarly to other UV-selected PACS-detected galaxies at their same redshift. Consequently, the dust-correction factors obtained with their UV continuum slope allow to determine their total SFR, unlike at higher redshifts. However, the dust attenuation derived from UV to NIR SED fitting overestimates the total SFR for most of our PACS-detected LBGs in age-dependent way: the overestimation factor is higher in younger galaxies.
Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) represent one of the kinds of star-forming galaxies that are found in the high-redshift universe. The detection of LBGs in the FIR domain can provide very important clues on their dust attenuation and total SFR, allowing a more detailed study than those performed so far. In this work we explore the FIR emission of a sample of 16 LBGs at z ~ 3 in the GOODS-North and GOODS-South fields that are individually detected in PACS-100um or PACS-160um. These detections demonstrate the possibility of measuring the dust emission of LBGs at high redshift. We find that PACS-detec…
In this work we analyze the physical properties of a sample of 56 spectroscopically selected star-forming (SF) Ly$α$ emitting galaxies at 2.0$\lesssim$z$\lesssim$3.5 using both a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting procedure from rest-frame UV to mid-IR and direct 160$μ$m observations taken with the Photodetector Array Camera & Spectrometer (PACS) instrument onboard \emph{Herschel Space Observatory}. We define LAEs as those Ly$α$ emitting galaxies whose rest-frame Ly$α$ equivalent widths (Ly$α$ EW$_{rest-frame}$) are above 20Å, the typical threshold in narrow-band searches. Ly$α$ emitti…
We present first insights into the far-IR properties for a sample of IRAC and MIPS-24um detected Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z ~ 3, as derived from observations in the northern field of the Great Observatories Origins Survey (GOODS-N) carried out with the PACS instrument on board the Herschel Space Observatory. Although none of our galaxies are detected by Herschel, we employ a stacking technique to construct, for the first time, the average spectral energy distribution of infrared luminous LBGs from UV to radio wavelengths. We derive a median IR luminosity of L_{IR} = 1.6 x 10^12 Lo, placi…
One remaining open question regarding the physical properties of Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) is their dust content and its evolution with redshift. The variety of results is large and with those reported by now is difficult to establish clear relations between dust, other fundamental parameters of galaxies (star-formation rate, metallicity or age) and redshift. In this Letter, we report \emph{Herschel} PACS-100$μ$m, PACS-160$μ$m and \emph{Spitzer} MIPS-24$μ$m detections of a sample of spectroscopically GALEX-selected LAEs at z$\sim$0.3 and $\sim$1.0. Five out of ten and one out of two LAEs are detec…
Lyman alpha blobs (LABs) are spatially extended lyman alpha nebulae seen at high redshift. The origin of Lyman alpha emission in the LABs is still unclear and under debate. To study their heating mechanism(s), we present Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of the 20 cm radio emission and Herschel PACS and SPIRE measurements of the far-infrared (FIR) emission towards the four LABs in the protocluster J2143-4423 at z=2.38. Among the four LABs, B6 and B7 are detected in the radio with fluxes of 67+/-17 microJy and 77+/-16 microJy, respectively, and B5 is marginally detected at 3…
We present Herschel far-infrared (FIR) observations of two sub-mm bright quasars at high redshift: SDSS J1148+5251 (z=6.42) and BR 1202-0725 (z=4.69) obtained with the PACS instrument. Both objects are detected in the PACS photometric bands. The Herschel measurements provide additional data points that constrain the FIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of both sources, and they emphasise a broad range of dust temperatures in these objects. For lambda_rest ~< 20mu, the two SEDs are very similar to the average SEDs of quasars at low redshift. In the FIR, however, both quasars show excess emi…
The analysis of the physical properties of low-redshift Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) can provide clues in the study of their high-redshift analogues. At $z \sim 0.3$, LAEs are bright enough to be detected over almost the entire electromagnetic spectrum and it is possible to carry out a more precise and complete study than at higher redshifts. In this study, we examine the UV and IR emission, dust attenuation, SFR and morphology of a sample of 23 GALEX-discovered star-forming (SF) LAEs at $z \sim 0.3$ with direct UV (GALEX), optical (ACS) and FIR (PACS and MIPS) data. Using the same UV and IR limiting…
We use deep 70, 100 and 160 um observations taken with PACS, the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer on board of Herschel, as part of the PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP) guaranteed time, to study the relation between star formation rate and environment at redshift ~ 1 in the GOODS-S and GOODS-N fields. We use the SDSS spectroscopic catalog to build the local analog and study the evolution of the star formation activity dependence on the environment. At z ~ 1 we observe a reversal of the relation between star formation rate and local density, confirming the results based on Spitzer 24 um …
In this first paper on the results of our Herschel PACS survey of local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), as part of our SHINING survey of local galaxies, we present far-infrared spectroscopy of Mrk 231, the most luminous of the local ULIRGs, and a type 1 broad absorption line AGN. For the first time in a ULIRG, all observed far-infrared fine-structure lines in the PACS range were detected and all were found to be deficient relative to the far infrared luminosity by 1 - 2 orders of magnitude compared with lower luminosity galaxies. The deficits are similar to those for the mid-infrared…
We present Herschel-PACS observations of rest-frame mid-infrared and far-infrared spectral line emissions from two lensed, ultra-luminous infrared galaxies at high redshift: MIPS J142824.0+352619 (MIPS J1428), a starburst-dominated system at z = 1.3, and IRAS F10214+4724 (F10214), a source at z = 2.3 hosting both star-formation and a luminous AGN. We have detected [OI]63 micron and [OIII]52 micron in MIPS J1428, and tentatively [OIII]52 micron in F10214. Together with the recent ZEUS-CSO [CII]158 micron detection in MIPS J1428 we can for the first time combine [OI], [CII] and far-IR (FIR) cont…
Using Herschel PACS and SPIRE observations as part of the HerMES, we explore the far-IR properties of a sample of mid-IR selected starburst dominated ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z ~ 2. We derive robust estimates of infrared luminosities (L_IR) and dust temperatures (Td) of the population and find that galaxies in our sample range from those that are as cold as high-z sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) to those that are as warm as optically faint radio galaxies (OFRGs) and local ULIRGs. We also demonstrate that a significant fraction of our sample would be missed from ground based …
FIR imaging of interacting galaxies allows locating even hidden sites of star formation and measuring of the relative strength of nuclear and extra-nuclear star formation. We want to resolve the star-forming sites in the nearby system of the Antennae. Thanks to the unprecedented sharpness and depth of the PACS camera onboard ESA's Herschel Space Observatory, it is possible for the first time to achieve a complete assessment of individual star-forming knots in the FIR with scan maps at 70, 100, and 160 um. We used clump extraction photometry and SED diagnostics to derive the properties related …
We present the first detection of a correlation between the Lyman-$α$ forest and cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing. For each Lyman-$α$ forest in SDSS-III/BOSS DR12, we correlate the one-dimensional power spectrum with the CMB lensing convergence on the same line of sight from Planck. This measurement constitutes a position-dependent power spectrum, or a squeezed bispectrum, and quantifies the non-linear response of the Lyman-$α$ forest power spectrum to a large-scale overdensity. The signal is measured at 5~$σ$ and is consistent with the $Λ$CDM expectation. We measure the linear bias o…
The formation of the first galaxies is accompanied by large accretion flows and virialization shocks, during which the gas is shock-heated to temperatures of $\sim10^4$ K, leading to potentially strong fluxes in the Lyman alpha line. Indeed, a number of Lyman alpha blobs has been detected at high redshift. In this letter, we explore the origin of such Lyman alpha emission using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations that include a detailed model of atomic hydrogen as a multi-level atom and the effects of line trapping with the adaptive mesh refinement code FLASH. We see that baryons fall into…
We present Herschel-PACS spectroscopy of the [OI]63um far-infrared cooling line from a sample of six unlensed and spectroscopically-confirmed 870um-selected submillimetre (submm) galaxies (SMGs) at 1.1<z<1.6 from the LABOCA Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS) Submm Survey (LESS). This is the first survey of [OI]63um, one of the main photodissociation region (PDR) cooling lines, in SMGs. New high-resolution ALMA interferometric 870um continuum imaging confirms that these six Herschel-targeted SMG counterparts are bona fide sources of submm emission. We detect [OI]63um in two SMGs with a S…
We analyse the rest-frame UV-to-NIR spectral energy distribution (SED) of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs), star-forming (SF) BzK (sBzK), and UV-selected galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5 in the COSMOS, GOODS-N, and GOODS-S fields. Additionally, we complement the multi-wavelength coverage of the galaxies located in the GOODS fields with deep FIR data taken from the GOODS-Herschel project. We find that sBzK galaxies represent the general population of SF galaxies at z ~ 2 better than LBGs. For a given stellar mass, LBGs tend to have bluer optical colours than sBzK and UV-selected galaxies. We find clean PAC…
We derive the distribution of the synchrotron spectral index across NGC6946 and investigate the correlation between the radio continuum (synchrotron) and far-infrared (FIR) emission using the KINGFISH Herschel PACS and SPIRE data. The radio--FIR correlation is studied as a function of star formation rate, magnetic field strength, radiation field strength, and the total gas surface brightness. The synchrotron emission follows both star-forming regions and the so-called magnetic arms present in the inter-arm regions. The synchrotron spectral index is steepest along the magnetic arms ($α_n \sim 1…
We present Herschel/PACS spectroscopic maps of the dwarf galaxy NC4214 observed in 6 far infrared fine-structure lines: [C II] 158mu, [O III] 88mu, [O I] 63mu, [O I] 146mu, [N II] 122mu, and [N II] 205mu. The maps are sampled to the full telescope spatial resolution and reveal unprecedented detail on ~ 150 pc size scales. We detect [C II] emission over the whole mapped area, [O III] being the most luminous FIR line. The ratio of [O III]/[C II] peaks at about 2 toward the sites of massive star formation, higher than ratios seen in dusty starburst galaxies. The [C II]/CO ratios are 20 000 to 70 …
The Lyman alpha line is a robust tracer of high redshift galaxies. We present estimates of Lyman alpha emission from a protogalactic halo illuminated by UV background radiation fields with various intensities. For this purpose, we performed cosmological hydrodynamics simulations with the adaptive mesh refinement code FLASH, including a detailed network for primordial chemistry, comprising the formation of primordial molecules, a multi-level model for the hydrogen atom as well as the photo-ionization and photo-dissociation processes in a UV background. We find that the presence of a background r…
The formation of the first stars is an exciting frontier area in astronomy. Early redshifts z ~ 20 have become observationally promising as a result of a recently recognized effect of a supersonic relative velocity between the dark matter and gas. This effect produces prominent structure on 100 comoving Mpc scales, which makes it much more feasible to detect 21-cm fluctuations from the epoch of first heating. We use semi-numerical hybrid methods to follow for the first time the joint evolution of the X-ray and Lyman-Werner radiative backgrounds, including the effect of the supersonic streaming…
We present the first results of a survey of the [CII]158um emission line in 241 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) comprising the Great Observatories All-sky Survey (GOALS) sample, obtained with the PACS instrument on board Herschel. The [CII] luminosities of the LIRGs in GOALS range from ~10^7 to 2x10^9 Lsun. We find that LIRGs show a tight correlation of [CII]/FIR with far-IR flux density ratios, with a strong negative trend spanning from ~10^-2 to 10^-4, as the average temperature of dust increases. We find correlations between the [CII]/FIR ratio and the strength of the 9.7um silicate abso…
We use a new method to model fluctuations of the Lyman-Werner (LW) and Lyman-alpha radiation backgrounds at high redshift. At these early epochs the backgrounds are symptoms of a universe newly lit with its first stars. LW photons (11.5-13.6 eV) are of particular interest because they dissociate molecular hydrogen, the primary coolant in the first minihalos. By using a variation of the halo model, we efficiently generate power spectra for any choice of radiation background. We find that the LW power spectrum typically traces the matter power spectrum at large scales but turns over at the scale…
The Lyman-alpha forest is a unique probe of large-scale matter density fluctuations at high redshift (z > 2). It is possible to obtain 3D maps of the matter distribution from Lyman-alpha data, using tomographic reconstruction methods. Here, we present the largest tomographic map of matter fluctuations at z > 2, over the Gpc^3 volume covered by Lyman-alpha forest from SDSS-IV quasar spectra in the Stripe 82 field. We present a catalog of high-redshift voids constructed from this map. The measurement of the cross-correlation between these voids and the Lyman-alpha forest provides the first obser…
We use the photometric redshift method of Chakrabarti & McKee (2008) to infer photometric redshifts of submillimeter galaxies with far-IR (FIR) $\it{Herschel}$ data obtained as part of the PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP) program. For the sample with spectroscopic redshifts, we demonstrate the validity of this method over a large range of redshifts ($ 4 \ga z \ga 0.3$) and luminosities, finding an average accuracy in $(1+z_{\rm phot})/(1+z_{\rm spec})$ of 10%. Thus, this method is more accurate than other FIR photometric redshift methods. This method is different from typical FIR photometric meth…
We present the Cosmic Lyman-$α$ Transfer code (COLT), a massively parallel Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code, to simulate Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) resonant scattering through neutral hydrogen as a probe of the first galaxies. We explore the interaction of centrally produced Ly$α$ radiation with the host galactic environment. Ly$α$ photons emitted from the luminous starburst region escape with characteristic features in the line profile depending on the density distribution, ionization structure, and bulk velocity fields. For example, anisotropic ionization exhibits a tall peak close to line centre …
Utilizing state-of-the-art, adaptive mesh-refinement cosmological hydrodynamic simulations with ultra-high resolution (114h-1pc) and large sample size (>3300 galaxies of stellar mass >10^9Msun), we show how the stellar light of Lyman Break Galaxies at z=2 is distributed between optical/ultra-violet (UV) and far-infrared (FIR) bands. With a single scalar parameter for dust obscuration we can simultaneously reproduce the observed UV luminosity function for the entire range (3-100 Msun/yr) and extant FIR luminosity function at the bright end (>20Msun/yr). We quantify that galaxies more massive or…
Recent theoretical work has suggested that Lyman-alpha nebulae could be substantially polarized in the Lyman-alpha emission line, depending on the geometry, kinematics, and powering mechanism at work. Polarization observations can therefore provide a useful constraint on the source of ionization in these systems. In this Letter, we present the first Lyman-alpha polarization measurements for a giant Lyman-alpha nebula at z~2.656. We do not detect any significant linear polarization of the Lyman-alpha emission: P_{Lyman-alpha}=2.6+/-2.8% (corrected for statistical bias) within a single large ape…
We present the first dynamical mass measurements for Lyman alpha galaxies at high redshift, based on velocity dispersion measurements from rest-frame optical emission lines and size measurements from HST imaging, for a sample of nine galaxies drawn from four surveys. These measurements enable us to study the nature of Lyman alpha galaxies in the context of galaxy scaling relations. The resulting dynamical masses range from 1e9 to 1e10 solar masses. We also fit stellar population models to our sample, and use them to plot the Lyman alpha sample on a stellar mass vs. line width relation. Overall…
The fraction of ionizing photons (fesc) that escape from z>6 galaxies is an important parameter when assessing the role of these objects in the reionization of the Universe, but the opacity of the intergalactic medium precludes a direct measurement of fesc for individual galaxies at these epochs. We argue, that since fesc regulates the impact of nebular emission on the spectra of galaxies, it should nonetheless be possible to indirectly probe fesc well into the reionization epoch. As a first step, we demonstrate that by combining measurements of the rest-frame UV slope beta with the equivalent…
We present the methodology for, and the first results from, a new imaging program aimed at identifying and characterizing the host galaxies of damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs) at z>2. We target quasar sightlines with multiple optically-thick HI absorbers and use the higher-redshift system as a "blocking filter" (via its Lyman-limit absorption) to eliminate all far-ultraviolet (FUV) emission from the quasar. This allows us to directly image the rest-frame FUV continuum emission of the lower-redshift DLA, without any quasar contamination and with no bias towards large impact parameters. We in…
As Lyman-alpha photons are scattered by neutral hydrogen, a change with redshift in the Lyman-alpha equivalent width distribution of distant galaxies offers a promising probe of the degree of ionization in the intergalactic medium and hence when cosmic reionization ended. This simple test is complicated by the fact that Lyman-alpha emission can also be affected by the evolving astrophysical details of the host galaxies. In the first paper in this series, we demonstrated both a luminosity and redshift dependent trend in the fraction of Lyman-alpha emitters seen within color-selected Lyman-break…
We investigate the process of metal-free star formation in the first galaxies with a high-resolution cosmological simulation. We consider the cosmologically motivated scenario in which a strong molecule-destroying Lyman-Werner (LW) background inhibits effective cooling in low-mass haloes, delaying star formation until the collapse or more massive haloes. Only when molecular hydrogen (H2) can self-shield from LW radiation, which requires a halo capable of cooling by atomic line emission, will star formation be possible. To follow the formation of multiple gravitationally bound objects, at high …
We present a new model for the observed Lyman alpha blobs (LABs) within the context of the standard cold dark matter model. In this model, LABs are the most massive halos with the strongest clustering (proto-clusters) undergoing extreme starbursts in the high-z universe. Aided by calculations of detailed radiative transfer of Lya photons through ultra-high resolution (159pc) large-scale (>30Mpc) adaptive mesh-refinement cosmological hydrodynamic simulations with galaxy formation, this model is shown to be able to, for the first time, reproduce simultaneously the global Lya luminosity function …
The hydrogen Ly$α$ forest is an important probe of the $z>2$ Universe that is otherwise challenging to observe with galaxy redshift surveys, but this technique has traditionally been limited to 1D studies in front of bright quasars. However, by pushing to faint magnitudes ($g>23$) with 8-10m large telescopes it becomes possible to exploit the high area density of high-redshift star-forming galaxies to create 3D tomographic maps of large-scale structure in the foreground. I describe the first pilot observations using this technique, as well discuss future surveys and the resulting science possi…
We present the results of a Herschel-PACS study of a sample of 97 LINERs at redshift z\sim 0.3 selected from the zCOSMOS survey. Of these sources, 34 are detected in a least one PACS band, enabling reliable estimates of the far-infrared L(FIR) luminosities, and a comparison to the FIR luminosities of local LINERs. Many of our PACS-detected LINERs are also UV sources detected by Galex. Assuming that the FIR is produced in young dusty star-forming regions, the typical star-formation rates (SFRs) for the host galaxies in our sample is \sim 10 M_Sun yr-1, 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than in man…
We present observations of a luminous galaxy at redshift z=6.573 --- the end of the reioinization epoch --- which has been spectroscopically confirmed twice. The first spectroscopic confirmation comes from slitless HST ACS grism spectra from the PEARS survey (Probing Evolution And Reionization Spectroscopically), which show a dramatic continuum break in the spectrum at restframe 1216 A wavelength. The second confirmation is done with Keck + DEIMOS. The continuum is not clearly detected with ground-based spectra, but high wavelength resolution enables the Lyman alpha emission line profile to be…
Faint star-forming galaxies at $z\sim 2-3$ can be used as alternative background sources to probe the Lyman-$α$ forest in addition to quasars, yielding high sightline densities that enable 3D tomographic reconstruction of the foreground absorption field. Here, we present the first data release from the COSMOS Lyman-Alpha Mapping And Mapping Observations (CLAMATO) Survey, which was conducted with the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck-I telescope. Over an observational footprint of 0.157$\mathrm{deg}^2$ within the COSMOS field, we used 240 galaxies and quasars at $2.17<z<3.00$, with a mean comoving …
[Abridged] We present maps of the main cooling lines of the neutral atomic gas ([OI] at 63 and 145 micron and [CII] at 158 micron) and in the [OIII] 88 micron line of the starburst galaxy M82, carried out with the PACS spectrometer on board the Herschel satellite. By applying PDR modeling we derive maps of the main ISM physical parameters, including the [CII] optical depth, at unprecedented spatial resolution (~300 pc). We can clearly kinematically separate the disk from the outflow in all lines. The [CII] and [OI] distributions are consistent with PDR emission both in the disk and in the outf…
Using four different suites of cosmological simulations, we generate synthetic spectra for galaxies with different Lyman continuum escape fractions (fesc) at redshifts z=7-9, in the rest-frame wavelength range relevant for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRSpec instrument. By investigating the effects of realistic star formation histories and metallicity distributions on the EW(Hb)-beta diagram (previously proposed as a tool for identifying galaxies with very high fesc), we find that neither of these effects are likely to jeopardize the identification of galaxies with extreme Lyman cont…
We report the detection of the most luminous high-redshift Lyman Alpha Emitting galaxy (LAE) yet seen, with log L(Ly alpha) = 43.9 ergs/s. The galaxy -- COSMOS Lyman alpha 1, or COLA1 -- was detected in a search for ultra-luminous LAEs with Hyper Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope. It was confirmed to lie at z = 6.593 based on a Lyman alpha line detection obtained from followup spectroscopy with the DEIMOS spectrograph on Keck2. COLA1 is the first very high-redshift LAE to show a multi-component Lyman alpha line profile with a blue wing, which suggests that it could lie in a highly ionized re…
We present the first lensing total mass estimate of a galaxy, at redshift 2.207, that acts as a gravitational deflector and damped Lyman-alpha absorber on the background QSO SDSS J1135-0010, at redshift 2.888. The remarkably small projected distance, or impact parameter, between the lens and the source has been estimated to be 0.8 +/- 0.1 kpc in a recent work. By exploiting the Sloan Digital Sky Survey database, we establish a likely lensing magnification signal in the photometry of the QSO. This is determined to be 2.2 mag brighter (or 8 times more luminous) than the median QSO at comparable …
We present the first results from the ongoing LAGER project (Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization), which is the largest narrowband survey for $z \sim$ 7 galaxies to date. Using a specially built narrowband filter NB964 for the superb large-area Dark-Energy Camera (DECam) on the NOAO/CTIO 4m Blanco telescope, LAGER has collected 34 hours NB964 narrowband imaging data in the 3 deg$^2$ COSMOS field. We have identified 23 Lyman Alpha Emitter (LAE) candidates at $z$ = 6.9 in the central 2-deg$^2$ region, where DECam and public COSMOS multi-band images exist. The resulting luminosity f…
Allowing for enhanced Ly$α$ photon line emission from Population III dominated stellar systems in the first forming galaxies, we show the 21-cm cosmic dawn signal at $10<z<30$ may substantially differ from standard scenarios. Energy transfer by Ly$α$ photons emerging from galaxies may heat intergalactic gas if HII regions within galaxies are recombination bound, or cool the gas faster than by adiabatic expansion if reddened by winds internal to the haloes. In some cases, differential 21-cm antenna temperatures near $-500$ mK may be achieved at $15<z<25$, similar to the signature detected by th…
The next generation of telescopes aim to directly observe the first generation of galaxies that initiated the reionization process in our Universe. The Lyman Alpha (Lya) emission line is robustly predicted to be the most prominent intrinsic spectral feature of these galaxies, making it an ideal target to search for and study high redshift galaxies. Unfortunately the large Gunn-Peterson optical depth of the surrounding neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) is thought to render this line extremely difficult to detect prior to reionization. In this paper we demonstrate that the radiative transfer ef…
