The irreversible thermodynamics of a continuous medium with magnetic dipoles predicts that a temperature gradient in the presence of magnetisation waves induces a magnetic induction field, which is the magnetic analog of the Seebeck effect. This thermal gradient modulates the precession and relaxation. The Magnetic Seebeck effect implies that magnetisation waves propagating in the direction of the temperature gradient and the external magnetic induction field are less attenuated, while magnetisation waves propagating in the opposite direction are more attenuated.
We develop a simple theory for the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect in n-doped InSb in an external magnetic field. We consider spin-$1/2$ electrons in the conduction band of InSb with a temperature gradient parallel to the applied magnetic field. In the absence of spin-orbit interactions, a Boltzmann equation approach leads to a spin current parallel to the field and proportional to the temperature gradient. The calculated longitudinal spin Seebeck coefficients oscillates as a function of magnetic field B; the peak positions are approximately periodic in 1/B. The oscillations arise when the Fe…
We calculate the phonon, electron and magnon temperature profiles in yttrium iron garnet/platinum bilayers by diffusive theory with appropriate boundary conditions, in particular taking into account interfacial thermal resistances. Our calculations show that in thin film hybrids, the interface magnetic heat conductance qualitatively affects the magnon temperature. Based on published material parameters we assess the degree of non-equilibrium at the yttrium iron garnet/platinum interface. The magnitude of the spin Seebeck effect derived from this approach compares well with experimental results…
We found a strong influence of the composition of the magnetic material on the temperature dependence of the tunneling magneto-Seebeck effect in $MgO$ based tunnel junctions. We use \textit{ab initio} alloy theory to consider different $Fe_xCo_{1-x}$ alloys for the ferromagnetic layer. Even a small change of the composition leads to strong changes in the magnitude or even in the sign of the tunneling magneto-Seebeck effect. This can explain differences between recent experimental results. In addition, changing the barrier thickness from six to ten monolayers of $MgO$ leads also to a non-trivia…
In this paper we investigate the spin-resolved thermoelectric properties of strongly correlated molecular junctions in the linear response regime. The magnetic molecule is modeled by a single orbital level to which the molecular core spin is attached by an exchange interaction. Using the numerical renormalization group method we analyze the behavior of the (spin) Seebeck effect, heat conductance and figure of merit for different model parameters of the molecule. We show that the thermopower strongly depends on the strength and type of the exchange interaction as well as the molecule's magnetic…
We theoretically consider the spin Seebeck effect, the charge Seebeck coefficient, and the thermoelectric figure of merit in superconducting hybrid structures including either magnetic textures or intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. We demonstrate that large magnitudes for all these quantities are obtainable in Josephson-based systems with either zero or a small externally applied magnetic field. This provides an alternative to the thermoelectric effects generated in high-field ($\sim 1$ T) superconducting hybrid systems, which were recently experimentally demonstrated. The systems studied contain …
The tunnel magneto-Seebeck effect is the dependence of the thermopower of magnetic tunnel junctions on the magnetic configuration. It is conventionally interpreted in terms of a thermoelectric generalization of the tunnel magnetoresistance. Here, we investigate the heat-driven electron transport in these junctions associated with electron-magnon scattering, using stochastic Landau-Lifshitz phenomenology and quantum kinetic theory. Our findings challenge the widely accepted single-electron picture of the tunneling thermopower in magnetic junctions.
The thermoelectric power, including the Nernst and Seebeck effects, in graphene nanoribbon is studied. By using the non-equilibrium Green function combining with the tight-binding Hamiltonian, the Nernst and Seebeck coefficients are obtained. Due to the electron-hole symmetry, the Nernst coefficient is an even function of the Fermi energy while the Seebeck coefficient is an odd function regardless of the magnetic field. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, the Nernst and Seebeck coefficients are almost independent of the chirality and width of the nanoribbon, and they show peaks when th…
We investigate the spin-dependent thermoelectric effects in magnetic graphene in both diffusive and ballistic regimes. Employing the Boltzmann and Landauer formalisms we calculate the spin and charge Seebeck coefficients (thermopower) in magnetic graphene varying the spin splitting, temperature, and doping of the junction. It is found that while in normal graphene the temperature gradient drive a charge current, in the case of magnetic graphene a significant spin current is also established. In particular we show that in the undoped magnetic graphene in which different spin carriers belong to …
The Tunneling Anisotropic Magneto-Thermopower (TAMT) and the Tunneling Anisotropic Spin-Seebeck (TASS) effects are studied for a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) composed of a ferromagnetic electrode, a zinc-blende semiconductor and a normal metal. We develop a theoretical model for describing the dependence of a thermally induced tunneling current across the MTJ on the in-plane orientation of the magnetization in the ferromagnetic layer. The model accounts for the specific Bychkov-Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions present in these systems, which are responsible for the $C_{2v}$ sym…
We theoretically investigate the spin-dependent Seebeck effect in an Aharonov-Bohm mesoscopic ring in the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions under magnetic flux perpendicular to the ring. We apply the Green's function method to calculate the spin Seebeck coefficient employing the tight-binding Hamiltonian. It is found that the spin Seebeck coefficient is proportional to the slope of the energy-dependent transmission coefficients. We study the strong dependence of spin Seebeck coefficient on the Fermi energy, magnetic flux, strength of spin-orbit coupling, and tempe…

In the absence of an external magnetic field and a spin-polarized charge current, an antiferromagnetic system supports two degenerate magnon modes. An applied thermal bias activates the magnetic dynamics, leading to a magnon flow from the hot to the cold edge (magnonic spin Seebeck current). Both degenerate bands contribute to the magnon current but the orientations of the magnetic moments underlying the magnons are opposite in different bands. Therefore, while the magnon current is nonzero, the net spin current is zero.
We develop a Boltzmann transport theory of coupled magnon-phonon transport in ferromagnetic insulators. The explicit treatment of the magnon-phonon coupling within the Boltzmann approach allows us to calculate the low-temperature magnetic-field dependence of the spin-Seebeck voltage. Within the Boltzmann theory we find that this magnetic field dependence shows similar features as found by Flebus et al. [Phys. Rev. B 95, 144420 (2017)] for a strongly coupled magnon phonon system that forms magnon-polarons, and consistent with experimental findings in yttrium iron garnet by Kikkawa et al. [Phys.…
We theoretically investigate the temperature gradient-dependent or unidirectional Seebeck effect (USE) in a magnetic/ nonmagnetic topological insulator (TI) heterostructure with in-plane magnetization in terms of the semiclassical electron dynamics and Fermi golden rule. The USE has a quantum origin arising from the magnon asymmetric scattering of surface Dirac electrons on TI. We discuss the USE in the heterostructures, Cr$_{x}$(Bi$_{1-y}$Sb$_y$)$_{2-x}$Te$_{3}$/ (Bi$_{1-y}$Sb$_{y})_2$Te$_{3}$. The USE exhibits $\cosϕ$-dependence (measured from $y$-direction) on the orientation of magnetizati…
The interplay between charge, spin, and heat currents in magnetic nano systems subjected to a temperature gradient has lead to a variety of novel effects and promising applications studied in the fast-growing field of spincaloritronics. Here we explore the magnetothermoelectrical properties of an individual magnetic domain wall in a permalloy nanowire. In thermal gradients of the order of few Kelvin per micrometer along the long wire axis, we find a clear magneto-Seebeck signature due to the presence of a single domain wall. The observed domain wall magneto-Seebeck effect can be explained by t…
A non-uniform temperature profile may generate a pure spin current in magnetic films, as observed for instance in the spin Seebeck effect. In addition, thermally induced elastic deformations may set in that could affect the spin current. A self-consistent theory of the magnonic spin Seebeck effect including thermally activated magneto-elastic effects is presented and analytical expressions for the thermally activated deformation tensor and dispersion relations for coupled magneto-elastic modes are obtained. We derived analytical results for bulk (3D) systems and thin magnetic (2D) films. We ob…
The interplay between spin and heat currents at magnetic insulator|nonmagnetic metal interfaces has been a subject of much scrutiny because of both fundamental physics and the promise for technological applications. While ferrimagnetic and, more recently, antiferromagnetic systems have been extensively investigated, a theory generalizing the heat-to-spin interconversion in noncollinear magnets is still lacking. Here, we establish a general framework for thermally-driven spin transport at the interface between a noncollinear magnet and a normal metal. Modeling the interfacial coupling between l…
We probe the spin Seebeck effect in Gd$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$/Pt hybrid structures as a function of temperature and observe two sign changes of the spin Seebeck signal with decreasing temperature. A first sign change occurs at a temperature close to the Gd$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ magnetic compensation point at around 280 K. There the spin Seebeck signal changes sign abruptly with unaltered amplitude, indicating that the spin current is mainly caused by the magnetic Fe sub-lattices, which reorient their directions at this temperature. A second, more gradual sign change takes place around the order…
We theoretically propose a nonreciprocal spin Seebeck effect, i.e., nonreciprocal spin transport generated by a temperature gradient, in antiferromagnetic insulators with broken inversion symmetry. We find that nonreciprocity in antiferromagnets has rich properties not expected in ferromagnets. In particular, we show that polar antiferromagnets, in which the crystal lacks the spatial inversion symmetry, exhibit perfect nonreciprocity --- one-way spin current flow irrespective of the direction of the temperature gradient. We also show that nonpolar centrosymmetric crystals can exhibit nonrecipr…
Following the theoretical approach by Xiao et al [Phys. Rev. B 81, 214418 (2010)] to the spin Seebeck effect, we calculate the mean value of the total spin current flowing through a normalmetal/ ferromagnet interface. The spin current emitted from the ferromagnet to the normal metal is evaluated in the framework of the Fokker-Planck approach for the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. We show that the total spin current depends not only on the temperature difference between the electron and the magnon baths, but also on the external magnetic field and magnetic anisotropy. Apart from t…
We report the observation of magnon spin currents generated by the Spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in a bulk single crystal of the easy-plane antiferromagnet NiO. A magnetic field induces a non-degeneracy and thereby an imbalance in the population of magnon modes with opposite spin. A temperature gradient then gives rise to a non-zero magnon spin current. This SSE is measured both in a local and a non-local geometry at 5$\,$K in bulk NiO. The magnetic field dependence of the obtained signal is modelled by magnetic field splitting of the low energy magnon modes, affecting the spin Seebeck coefficient…
The angular dependence of the thermal transport in insulating or conducting ferromagnets is derived on the basis of the Onsager reciprocity relations applied to a magnetic system. It is shown that the angular dependence of the temperature gradient takes the same form as that of the anisotropic magnetoresistance, including anomalous and planar Hall contributions. The measured thermocouple generated between the extremities of the non-magnetic electrode in thermal contact to the ferromagnet follows this same angular dependence. The sign and amplitude of the magneto-voltaic signal is controlled by…
The spin Seebeck effect is studied across a charge insulating magnetic junction, in which thermal-spin conjugate transport is assisted by the exchange interactions between the localized spin in the center and electrons in metallic leads. We show that, in contrast with bulk spin Seebeck effect, the figure of merit of such nanoscale thermal-spin conversion can be infinite, leading to the ideal Carnot efficiency in the linear response regime. We also find that in the nonlinear spin Seebeck transport regime, the device possesses the asymmetric and negative differential spin Seebeck effects. In the…
The longitudinal Seebeck coefficient of the charge-ordered layered crystals in a strong quantizing magnetic field normal to layers plane has been determined. The conditions whereby charge ordering parameter and chemical potential are oscillating functions of magnetic field induction are considered. The longitudinal Seebeck coefficient has been calculated for two models of relaxation time:i)constant relaxation time and ii)relaxation time proportional to the longitudinal velocity. It has been shown that in a quasi-classical region of magnetic fields for the case of relaxation time proportional t…
We have developed a vectorial type of measurement for the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in epitaxial NiFe$_2$O$_4$ thin films which have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on MgGa$_2$O$_4$ (MGO) with (001) and (011) orientation as well as CoGa$_2$O$_4$ (011) (CGO), thus varying the lattice mismatch and crystal orientation. We confirm that a large lattice mismatch leads to strain anisotropy in addition to the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the thin films using vibrating sample magnetometry and ferromagnetic resonance measurements. Moreover, we show that the existence of a magnetic strain aniso…
We derive thermomagnonic torque and its "$β$-type" dissipative correction from the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The "$β$-type" dissipative correction describes viscous coupling between magnetic dynamics and magnonic current and it stems from spin mistracking of the magnetic order. We show that thermomagnonic torque is important for describing temperature gradient induced motion of skyrmions in helical magnets while dissipative correction plays an essential role in generating transverse Magnus force. We propose to detect such skyrmionic motion by employing the transverse spin Se…
Thermoelectric effects in magnetic tunnel junctions are currently an attractive research topic. Here, we demonstrate that the tunnel magneto-Seebeck effect (TMS) in CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB tunnel junctions can be switched on to a logic 1 state and off to 0 by simply changing the magnetic state of the CoFeB electrodes. We enable this new functionality of magnetic tunnel junctions by combining a thermal gradient and an electric field. This new technique unveils the bias-enhanced tunnel magneto-Seebeck effect, which can serve as the basis for logic devices or memories in a green information technology wi…
Using a simplified microscopic model of coupled spin and lattice excitations in a ferromagnetic insulator we evaluate the magnetic-field dependence of the spin Seebeck effect at low temperatures. The model includes Heisenberg exchange coupling, a harmonic lattice potential, and a pseudo-dipolar exchange interaction. Our approach goes beyond previous work [Phys. Rev. B 98, 134421 (2018)] in that it does not rely on the a priori assumption of a fast equilibration of the magnon and phonon distributions. Our theory shows that singular features in the magnetic-field dependence of the spin Seebeck e…
In this work, we study the conductance and the thermoelectric properties of a quantum dot embedded between two metallic leads with a side-coupled triple quantum dot molecule under a magnetic field. We focus on the spin polarization and thermoelectric quantities. Our results show the possibility of design an efficient spin filter device besides a noticeable enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient driven by the asymmetry in the quantum dots energy levels and a tunable pure spin Seebeck effect is obtained. This behavior also holds in the interacting case, where a pure spin Seebeck effect can be ob…
We propose inducing Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons in a magnetic insulator by a heat flow oriented toward its boundary. At a critical heat flux, the oversaturated thermal gas of magnons accumulated at the boundary precipitates the condensate, which then grows gradually as the thermal bias is dialed up further. The thermal magnons thus pumped by the magnonic bulk (spin) Seebeck effect must generally overcome both the local Gilbert damping associated with the coherent magnetic dynamics as well as the radiative spin-wave losses toward the magnetic bulk, in order to achieve the threshold of…
We consider the spin-current driven dynamics of a magnetic nanostructure in a conductive magnetic wire under a heat gradient in an open circuit, spin Seebeck effect geometry. It is shown that the spin-current scattering results in a spin-current torque acting on the nanostructure and leading to precession and displacement. The scattering leads also to a redistribution of the spin electrochemical potential along the wire resulting in a break of the polarity-reversal symmetry of the inverse spin Hall effect voltage with respect to the heat gradient inversion.

We present measurements of magneto-Seebeck effect on a spin valve with in-plane thermal gradient. We measured open circuit voltage and short circuit current by applying a temperature gradient across a spin valve stack, where one of the ferromagnetic layers is pinned. We found a clear hysteresis in these two quantities as a function of magnetic field. From these measurements, the magneto-Seebeck effect was found to be 0.82%.
We develop a low-temperature, long-wavelength theory for the interfacial spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in easy-axis antiferromagnets. The field-induced spin-flop (SF) transition of Néel order is associated with a qualitative change in SSE behavior: Below SF, there are two spin carriers with opposite magnetic moments, with the carriers polarized along the field forming a majority magnon band. Above SF, the low-energy, ferromagnetic-like mode has magnetic moment opposite the field. This results in a sign change of the SSE across SF, which agrees with recent measurements on Cr$_2$O$_3$/Pt and Cr$_2$O…
The origin of the suppression of the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect by applied magnetic fields is studied. We perform numerical simulations of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of motion for an atomistic spin model and calculate the magnon accumulation in linear temperature gradients for different strengths of applied magnetic fields and different length scales of the temperature gradient. We observe a decrease of the magnon accumulation with increasing magnetic field and we reveal that the origin of this effect is a field dependent change of the frequency distribution of the p…
To construct reliable material platforms and to uncover new rules to realize spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) and thermal spin-filtering effect (SFE) are core topics in spin caloritronics. Here we design several single-layer boron-nitrogen nanotubes (BNNTs) with n boron (nitrogen) atoms substituted by carbons in every unit cell. We find that for n = 1, the magnetic BNNTs generate a good SSE with nearly symmetric spin-up and spin-down currents; while as the carbon dopant concentration increases (c.f. n $\geq$ 2), a high rotational symmetry of the carbons contributes to generate the SSE with more symme…
Efficient generation of spin polarization is the central focus of spintronics. In magnetic materials, spin currents can arise from heat currents by the conventional spin Seebeck effect. Recently, chiral phonons with definite handedness and angular momenta have also produced profound impacts on multiple research fields. In this paper, starting with nonequilibrium distribution of chiral phonons under temperature gradient, we find a new spin selectivity effect - chiral phonon activated spin Seebeck (CPASS) effect, in chiral materials without magnetic order nor spin-orbit coupling. With both phono…
We study the nonequilibrium Seebeck spin transport across metal-magnetic insulator interfaces. The conjugate-converted thermal-spin transport is assisted by the exchange interaction at the interface, between conduction electrons in the metal lead and localized spins in the insulating magnet lead. We predict the rectification and negative differential spin Seebeck effect and resolve their microscopic mechanism, as a consequence of the strongly-fluctuated electronic density of states in the metal lead. The rectification of spin Peltier effect is also discussed. The phenomena predicted here are r…
We study the phenomenon of spin-current rectification in a one-dimensional XXZ spin chain in the presence of a thermal drive. In our model a pure spin current is generated by a temperature difference between two harmonic heat baths which in turn creates a spin voltage via the spin-Seebeck effect. Along with a local spin-current operator definition and the nonequilibrium modified Redfield solution we study the spin-rectification ratio as a function of system size and external magnetic field. Intriguing effects are observed at low temperatures such as oscillations with system size and high range…
We have studied the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect in a polar antiferromagnet $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$ in contact with a Pt film. Below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$, spin Seebeck voltages whose magnetic field dependence is similar to that reported in antiferromagnetic MnF$_{2}$$\mid$Pt bilayers are observed. Though a small weak-ferromagnetic moment appears owing to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in $α$-Cu$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{7}$, the magnetic field dependence of spin Seebeck voltages is found to be irrelevant to the weak ferromagnetic moment…
Thermal-bias-induced spin angular momentum transfer between a paramagnetic metal and ferromagnetic insulator is studied theoretically based on the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) phenomenology. Magnons in the ferromagnet establish a nonequilibrium steady state by equilibrating with phonons via bulk Gilbert damping and electrons in the paramagnet via spin pumping, according to the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Subthermal magnons and the associated spin currents are treated classically, while the appropriate quantum crossover is imposed on high-frequency magnetic fluctuations. We ide…
We investigate the spin-dependent Seebeck coefficient and the tunneling magneto thermopower of CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ) in the presence of thermal gradients across the MTJ. Thermal gradients are generated by an electric heater on top of the nanopillars. The thermo power voltage across the MTJ is found to scale linearly with the heating power and reveals similar field dependence as the tunnel magnetoresistance. The amplitude of the thermal gradient is derived from calibration measurements in combination with finite element simulations of the heat flux. Based on this, larg…
We report first-principles calculations of inelastic Seebeck coefficients in an aluminum monatomic junction. We compare the elastic and inelastic Seebeck coefficients with and without local heating. In the low temperature regime, the signature of normal modes in the profiles of the inelastic Seebeck effects is salient. The inelastic Seebeck effects are enhanced by the normal modes, and further magnified by local heating. In the high temperature regime, the inelastic Seebeck effects are weakly suppressed due to the quasi-ballistic transport.
We investigate the thermoelectric properties of Fe/MgO/Fe(001) magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) by means of the linear-response theory combined with a first-principles-based Landauer-Büttiker approach. We find that the Seebeck coefficient of Fe/MgO/Fe(001) MTJs strongly depends on the barrier thickness and the tetragonal distortion. A compressive tetragonal distortion of the in-plane lattice parameter in the MTJs provides interface resonant states just above the Fermi energy. This causes resonant tunneling in the MTJs and significantly enhances the Seebeck coefficient when the thickness of the…
Understanding heat generation and transport processes in a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) is a significant step towards improving its application in current memory devices. Recent work has experimentally demonstrated the magneto-Seebeck effect in MTJs, where the Seebeck coefficient of the junction varies as the magnetic configuration changes from a parallel (P) to an anti-parallel (AP) configuration. Here we report the study on its as-yet-unexplored reciprocal effect, the magneto-Peltier effect, where the heat flow carried by the tunneling electrons is altered by changing the magnetic configur…
The spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) in platinum (Pt) and tantalum (Ta) on yttrium iron garnet (YIG) has been investigated by both externally heating the sample (using an on-chip Pt heater on top of the device) as well as by current-induced heating. For SSE measurements, external heating is the most common method to obtain clear signals. Here we show that also by current-induced heating it is possible to directly observe the SSE, separate from the also present spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) signal, by using a lock-in detection technique. Using this measurement technique, the presence of additional…
We theoretically investigate the Tunneling Anisotropic Magneto-Seebeck effect in a realistically-modeled CoPt|MgO|Pt tunnel junction using coherent transport calculations. For comparison we study the tunneling magneto-Seebeck effect in CoPt|MgO|CoPt as well. We find that the magneto-Seebeck ratio of CoPt|MgO|Pt exceeds that of CoPt|MgO|CoPt for small barrier thicknesses, reaching 175% at room temperature. This result provides a sharp contrast to the magnetoresistance, which behaves oppositely for all barrier thicknesses and differs by one order of magnitude between devices. Here the magnetores…
The rising field of spin caloritronics focuses on the interactions between spin and heat currents in a magnetic material; the observation of the spin Seebeck effect opened the route to this branch of research. This paper reports the results of a round robin test performed by five partners on a single device highlighting the reproducibility problems related to the measurements of the spin Seebeck coefficient, the quantity that describes the strength of the spin Seebeck effect. This work stimulated the search for more reproducible measurement methods through the analysis of the systematic effect…
This Letter presents ab initio calculations of the magneto-thermoelectric power (MTEP) and of the spin-Seebeck coefficient in MgO based tunnel junctions with Fe and Co leads. In addition, the normal thermopower is calculated and gives for pure Fe and Co an quantitative agreement with experiments. Consequently, the calculated values in tunnel junctions are a good estimation of upper limits. In particular, spin-Seebeck coefficients of more than 100 μV/K are possible. The MTEP ratio exceed several 1000% and depends strongly on temperature. In the case of Fe leads the MTEP ratio diverges even to i…
Transverse magneto-thermoelectric effects are studied in permalloy thin films grown on MgO and GaAs substrates and compared to those grown on suspended SiN membranes. The transverse voltage along platinum strips patterned on top of the permalloy films is measured vs. the external magnetic field as a function of angle and temperature gradient. After the identification of the contribution of the planar and anomalous Nernst effects, we find an upper limit for the transverse spin Seebeck effect, which is several orders of magnitude smaller than previously reported.
We propose a new type of the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) emerging from the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in asymmetric four-terminal electron systems. This system generates spin currents or spin voltages along the longitudinal direction parallel to the temperature gradient in the absence of magnetic fields. The remarkable result arises from the breaking of reflection symmetry along the transverse direction. In the meantime, the SSE along the transverse direction, so-called the spin Nernst effect, with spin currents or spin voltages perpendicular to the temperature gradient can be simultaneously rea…
A micro-patterned spin Seebeck device is fabricated using an on-chip heater. Current is driven through a Au heater layer electrically isolated from a bilayer consisting of Fe$_3$O$_4$ (insulating ferrimagnet) and a spin detector layer. It is shown that through this method it is possible to measure the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (SSE) for small area magnetic devices, equivalent to traditional macroscopic SSE experiments. Using a lock-in detection technique it is possible to more sensitively characterize both the SSE and the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), as well as the inverse spin Hall e…
We first bring up the concept of spin-current Seebeck effect based on a recent experiment [Nat. Phys. {\bf 8}, 313 (2012)], and investigate the spin-current Seebeck effect in quantum dot (QD) systems. Our results show that the spin-current Seebeck coefficient $S$ is sensitive to different polarization states of QD, and therefore can be used to detect the polarization state of QD and monitor the transitions between different polarization states of QD. The intradot Coulomb interaction can greatly enhance the $S$ due to the stronger polarization of QD. By using the parameters for a typical QD, we…
