We prove two types of functional equations for double series of Euler type with complex coefficients. The first one is a generalization of the functional equation for the Euler double zeta-function, proved in a former work of the second-named author. The second one is more specific, which is proved when the coefficients are Fourier coefficients of cusp forms and the modular relation is essentially used in the course of the proof. As a consequence of functional equation we are able to determine trivial zero divisors.
Direct links between generalized harmonic numbers, linear Euler sums and Tornheim double series are established in a more perspicuous manner than is found in existing literature. We show that every linear Euler sum can be decomposed into a linear combination of Tornheim double series of the same weight. New closed form evaluations of various Euler sums are presented. Finally certain combinations of linear Euler sums that are reducible to Riemann zeta values are discovered.
We first survey the known results on functional equations for the double zeta-function of Euler type and its various generalizations. Then we prove two new functional equations for double series of Euler-Hurwitz-Barnes type with complex coefficients. The first one is of general nature, while the second one is valid when the coefficients are Fourier coefficients of a cusp form.
The distribution of the zeros of the Euler double zeta-function $ζ_2(s_1,s_2)$, in the case when $s_1=s_2$, is studied numerically. Some similarity to the distribution of the zeros of Hurwitz zeta-functions is observed.
The double zeta function was first studied by Euler in response to a letter from Goldbach in 1742. One of Euler's results for this function is a decomposition formula, which expresses the product of two values of the Riemann zeta function as a finite sum of double zeta values involving binomial coefficients. In this note, we establish a q-analog of Euler's decomposition formula. More specifically, we show that Euler's decomposition formula can be extended to what might be referred to as a ``double q-zeta function'' in such a way that Euler's formula is recovered in the limit as q tends to 1.
The fact that the double zeta values at n and m can be written as a sum of products of two zeta values and of zeta value at m+n, whenever n+m is odd is due to Euler. We shall show a weak version of this result for the Galois l-adic realization.
In 1776, L. Euler proposed three methods, called prima methodus, secunda methodus and tertia methodus, to calculate formulae for double zeta values. However strictly speaking, his last two methods are mathematically incomplete and require more precise reformulation and more sophisticated arguments for their justification. In this paper, we reformulate his formulae, give their rigorous proofs and also clarify that the formulae can be derived from the extended double shuffle relations.
In this paper we shall develop a theory of (extended) double shuffle relations of Euler sums which generalizes that of multiple zeta values (see Ihara, Kaneko and Zagier, \emph{Derivation and double shuffle relations for multiple zeta values}. Compos. Math. \textbf{142} (2)(2006), 307--338). After setting up the general framework we provide some numerical evidence for our two main conjectures. At the end we shall prove the following long standing conjecture: for every positive integer n $$ζ(\{3\}^n)=8^nζ(\{\ol2,1\}^n).$$ The main idea is to use the double shuffle relations and the distribution…
For a non-negative integer $N$, let $\mathcal{Z}_{N}:=\sum^N_{c = 0} \mathbb{Q} \cdot ζ(-c,s+c)$, where the right-hand side is the vector space spanned by the Euler-Zagier double zeta functions over $\mathbb{Q}$. In this paper, we show that $\mathcal{Z}_{N} =\bigoplus^{N}_{c = 0 : \text{even}} \mathbb{Q} \cdot ζ(-c,s+c)$, where $\bigoplus$ is the direct sum of vector spaces. Moreover, we give a family of relations that exhaust all $\mathbb{Q}$-linear relations on $\mathcal{Z}_{N}$.
We study the behavior of zero-divisors of the double zeta-function $ζ_2(s_1,s_2)$. In our former paper \cite{MatSho14} we studied the case $s_1=s_2$, but in the present paper we consider the more general two variable situation. We carry out numerical computations in order to trace the behavior of zero-divisors. We observe that some divisors approach the points with $s_2=0$, while other divisors approach the points which are solutions of $ζ(s_2)=1$.
In this note we give the Kolyvagin recursion in cyclotomic Euler systens a new and universal interpretation with the help of the double complex method introduced by Anderson and further developed by Das and Ouyang. Namely, we show that the recursion satisfied by Kolyvagin classes is the specialization of a universal recursion independent of the chosen field satisfied by universal Kolyvagin classes in the group cohomology of the universal ordinary distribution a la Kubert. Further, we show by a method involving a variant of the diagonal shift operation introduced by Das that certain group cohom…
In this paper, we define a parametric variant of generalized Euler sums and call them the (alternating) parametric Euler $T$-sums. By using the contour integration method and residue theorem, we establish several explicit formulae for the linear parametric Euler $T$-sums. Furthermore, by applying the results, we obtain explicit formulae for the Hoffman's (alternating) double $t$-values and Kaneko-Tsumura's (alternating) double $T$-values.
As automorphic $L$-functions or Artin $L$-functions, several classes of $L$-functions have Euler products and functional equations. In this paper we study the zeros of $L$-functions which have the Euler products and functional equations. We show that there exists some relation between the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function and the zeros of such $L$-functions. As a special case of our results, we find the relations between the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function and the zeros of automorphic $L$-functions attached to elliptic modular forms or the zeros of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions attached to …
The double zeta function is a function of two arguments defined by a double Dirichlet series, and was first studied by Euler in response to a letter from Goldbach in 1742. By calculating many examples, Euler inferred a closed form evaluation of the double zeta function in terms of values of the Riemann zeta function, in the case when the two arguments are positive integers with opposite parity. Here, we consider a signed analog of Euler's evaluation: namely a reduction formula for the signed double zeta function that reduces to Euler's evaluation when the signs are specialized to 1. This formu…
In this paper, we give Hurwitz-Lerch zeta distributions with $0 < σ\ne 1$ by using the Gamma function. Moreover, we define Hurwitz-Lerch type of Euler-Zagier double zeta distributions not only in the region of absolute convergence but also the outside of the region of absolute convergence.
We establish precise relations between Euler systems that are respectively associated to a $p$-adic representation $T$ and to its Kummer dual $T^*(1)$. Upon appropriate specialization of this general result, we are able to deduce the existence of an Euler system of rank $[K:\mathbb{Q}]$ over a totally real field $K$ that both interpolates the values of the Dedekind zeta function of $K$ at all positive even integers and also determines all higher Fitting ideals of the Selmer groups of $\mathbb{G}_m$ over abelian extensions of $K$. This construction in turn motivates the formulation of a precise…
We study the L-functions associated to Siegel modular forms (equivalently, automorphic representations of ${\rm GSp}(4,\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$) both theoretically and numerically. For the L-functions of degrees 10, 14, and 16 we perform representation theoretic calculations to cast the Langlands L-function in classical terms. We develop a precise notion of what it means to test a conjectured functional equation for an L-function, and we apply this to the degree 10 adjoint L-function associated to a Siegel modular form.
In this paper, we study the alternating Euler $T$-sums and $§$-sums, which are infinite series involving (alternating) odd harmonic numbers, and have similar forms and close relations to the Dirichlet beta functions. By using the method of residue computations, we establish the explicit formulas for the (alternating) linear and quadratic Euler $T$-sums and $§$-sums, from which, the parity theorems of Hoffman's double and triple $t$-values and Kaneko-Tsumura's double and triple $T$-values are further obtained. As supplements, we also show that the linear $T$-sums and $§$-sums are expressible in…
We give analogs for Euler's constant and ln(4/Pi) of the well-known double integrals for zeta(2) and zeta(3). We also give a series for ln(4/Pi) which reveals it to be an "alternating Euler constant."
By using various expansions of the parametric digamma function and the method of residue computations, we study three variants of the linear Euler sums, related Hoffman's double $t$-values and Kaneko-Tsumura's double $T$-values, and establish several symmetric extensions of the Kaneko-Tsumura conjecture. Some special cases are discussed in detail to determine the coefficients of involved mathematical constants in the evaluations. In particular, it can be found that several general convolution identities on the classical Bernoulli numbers and Genocchi numbers are required in this study, and the…
We give an explicit formula for the shuffle relation in a general double shuffle framework that specializes to double shuffle relations of multiple zeta values and multiple polylogarithms. As an application, we generalize the well-known decomposition formula of Euler that expresses the product of two Riemann zeta values as a sum of double zeta values to a formula that expresses the product of two multiple polylogarithm values as a sum of other multiple polylogarithm values.
In this article, we prove (many parts of) the rank two case of the Kato's local epsilon-conjecture using the Colmez's p-adic local Langlands correspondence for GL_2(Q_p). We show that a Colmez's pairing defined in his study of locally algebraic vectors gives us the conjectural epsilon-isomorphisms for (almost) all the families of p-adic representations of Gal(overline{Q}_p/Q_p) of rank two, which satisfy the desired interpolation property for the de Rham and trianguline case. For the de Rham and non trianguline case, we also show this interpolation property for the "critical" range of Hodge-Ta…
Let $0 < a \le 1$, $s,z \in {\mathbb{C}}$ and $0 < |z|\le 1$. Then the Hurwitz-Lerch zeta function is defined by $Φ(s,a,z) := \sum_{n=0}^\infty z^n(n+a)^{-s}$ when $σ:=\Re (s) >1$. In this paper, we show that the Hurwitz zeta function $ζ(σ,a) := Φ(σ,a,1)$ does not vanish for all $0 <σ<1$ if and only if $a \ge 1/2$. Moreover, we prove that $Φ(σ,a,z) \ne 0$ for all $0 <σ<1$ and $0 < a \le 1$ when $z \ne 1$. Real zeros of Hurwitz-Lerch type of Euler-Zagier double zeta functions are studied as well.
In this paper, we give Hurwitz zeta distributions with $0 < σ\ne 1$ by using the Gamma function. During the proof process, we show that the Hurwitz zeta function $ζ(σ,a)$ does not vanish for all $0 <σ<1$ if and only if $a \ge 1/2$. Next we define Euler-Zagier-Hurwitz type of double zeta distributions not only in the region of absolute convergence but also the outside of the region of absolute convergence. Moreover, we show that the Euler-Zagier-Hurwitz type of double zeta function $ζ_2 (σ_1,σ_2\,;a)$ does not vanish when $0<σ_1<1$, $σ_2>1$ and $1<σ_1+σ_2<2$ if and only if $a \ge 1/2$.

Associated to a newform $f(z)$ is a Dirichlet series $L_f(s)$ with functional equation and Euler product. Hecke showed that if the Dirichlet series $F(s)$ has a functional equation of a particular form, then $F(s)=L_f(s)$ for some holomorphic newform $f(z)$ on $Γ(1)$. Weil extended this result to $Γ_0(N)$ under an assumption on the twists of $F(s)$ by Dirichlet characters. Conrey and Farmer extended Hecke's result for certain small $N$, assuming that the local factors in the Euler product of $F(s)$ were of a special form. We make the same assumption on the Euler product and describe an approac…
In this paper we discuss three types of the mean values of the Euler double zeta function. In order to get results we introduce three approximate formulas for this function.
We prove asymptotic formulas for mean square values of the Euler double zeta-function $ζ_2(s_0,s)$, with respect to $\Im s$. Those formulas enable us to propose a double analogue of the Lindel{ö}f hypothesis.
In this paper, we rewrite two forms of an Euler-Ramanujan identity in terms of certain Dirichlet series and derive functional equation of the latter. We also use the Weierstrass-Enneper representation of minimal surfaces to obtain some identities involving these Dirichlet series and one complex parameter.
Using an integral of a hypergeometric function, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for irrationality of Euler's constant $γ$. The proof is by reduction to known irrationality criteria for $γ$ involving a Beukers-type double integral. We show that the hypergeometric and double integrals are equal by evaluating them. To do this, we introduce a construction of linear forms in 1, $γ$, and logarithms from Nesterenko-type series of rational functions. In the Appendix, Sergey Zlobin gives a change-of-variables proof that the series and the double integral are equal.
The first aim of this paper is to construct new generating functions for the generalized λ-Stirling type numbers of the second kind, generalized array type polynomials and generalized Eulerian type polynomials and numbers, attached to Dirichlet character. We derive various functional equations and differential equations using these generating functions. The second aim is provide a novel approach to deriving identities including multiplication formulas and recurrence relations for these numbers and polynomials using these functional equations and differential equations. Furthermore, by applying…
We give new proofs of two functional relations for the alternating analogues of Tornheim's double zeta function. Using the functional relations, we give new proofs of some evaluation formulas found by H. Tsumura for these alternating series.
If E is an elliptic curve over Q and K is an imaginary quadratic field, there is an Iwasawa main conjecture predicting the behavior of the Selmer group of E over the anticyclotomic Z_p-extension of K. The main conjecture takes different forms depending on the sign of the functional equation of L(E/K,s). In the present work we combine ideas of Bertolini and Darmon with those of Mazur and Rubin to shown that the main conjecture, regardless of the sign of the functional equation, can be reduced to proving the nonvanishing of sufficiently many p-adic L-functions attached to a family of congruent m…
In this paper, we give a simple proof of the functional relation for the Lerch type Tornheim double zeta function. By using it, we obtain simple proofs of some explicit evaluation formulas for double $L$-values.
There is a mysterious connection between the multiple polylogarithms at N-th roots of unity and modular varieties. In this paper we "explain" it in the simplest case of the double logarithm. We introduce an Euler complex data on modular curves. It includes a length two complex on every modular curve. Their second cohomology groups recover the Beilinson-Kato Euler system in K_2 of modular curves. We show that the above connection in the double logarithm case is provided by the specialization at a cusp of the Euler complex data on the modular curve Y_1(N). Furthermore, specializing the Euler com…
In this paper, we generalize the partial fraction decomposition which is fundamental in the theory of multiple zeta values, and prove a relation between Tornheim's double zeta functions of three complex variables. As applications, we give new integral representations of several zeta functions, an extension of the parity result to the whole domain of convergence, concrete expressions of Tornheim's double zeta function at non-positive integers and some results for the behavior of a certain Witten's zeta function at each integer. As an appendix, we show a functional equation for Euler's double ze…
In this paper we determine possible decompositions of Euler polynomials $E_k(x)$, i.e. possible ways of writing Euler polynomials as a functional composition of polynomials of lower degree. Using this result together with the well-known criterion of Bilu and Tichy, we prove that the Diophantine equation $$-1^k +2 ^k - \cdots + (-1)^{x} x^k=g(y),$$ with $g\in \mathbb{Q}[X]$ of degree at least $2$ and $k\geq 7$, has only finitely many integers solutions $x, y$ unless polynomial $g$ can be decomposed in ways that we list explicitly.
As one of the asymptotic formulas of the zeta-function, Hardy and Littlewood gave asymptotic formulas called the approximate functional equation. In this paper, we prove an approximate functional equation of the Barnes double zeta-function $ ζ_2 (s, α; v, w ) = \sum_{m=0}^\infty \sum_{n=0}^\infty (α+vm+wn)^{-s} $. Also, applying this approximate functional equation and the van der Corput method, we obtain upper bounds for $ ζ_2(1/2 + it, α; v, w) $ and $ ζ_2(3/2 + it, α; v, w) $ with respect to $ t $ as $ t \rightarrow \infty $.
We conjecture that the logarithm of the absolute value of the constant in the functional equation of the Hasse-Weil L-function of a variety X over Z is equal to a certain Arakelov de Rham Euler characteristic of X. This generalizes the fact that the constant in the functional equation of the zeta function of a number field is the square root of the discriminant of its ring of integers. We show that this conjecture is equivalent to Bloch's conjecture which expresses the conductor as the degree of a localized Chern class of the differentials. We prove both of these conjectures in the case of "ta…
The definition for the $p$-adic Hurwitz-type Euler zeta functions has been given by using the fermionic $p$-adic integral on $\mathbb Z_p$. By computing the values of this kind of $p$-adic zeta function at negative integers, we show that it interpolates the Euler polynomials $p$-adically. Many properties are provided for the $p$-adic Hurwitz-type Euler zeta functions, including the convergent Laurent series expansion, the distribution formula, the functional equation, the reflection formula, the derivative formula, the $p$-adic Raabe formula and so on. The definition for the $p$-adic Euler $L$…
This paper treats about one of the most remarkable achievements by Riemann, that is the symmetric form of the functional equation for ζ(s). We present here, after showing the first proof of Riemann, a new, simple and direct proof of the symmetric form of the functional equation for both the Eulerian Zeta function and the alternating Zeta function, connected with odd numbers. A proof that Euler himself could have arranged with a little step at the end of his paper "Remarques sur un beau rapport entre les séries des puissances tant direct que réciproches". This more general functional equation g…
