For the spin-$\{1}{2}$ Fermi-Hubbard model we derive the kinetic equation valid for weak interactions by using time-dependent perturbation expansion up to second order. In recent theoretical and numerical studies the kinetic equation has been merely stated without further details. In this contribution we provide the required background material.
A systematic derivation of Boltzmann equation is presented in the framework of closed-time-path formalism. Introducing a new type of probe, the expectation value of number operator is calculated as a functional of source. Then solving for the source by inverting the relation, the equation of motion for number is obtained when the source is removed, and it turns out to be the Boltzmann equation. The inversion formula is used in the course of derivation.
We present a derivation of Boltzmann principle $S_{B}=k_{B}\ln \mathcal{W}$ based on classical mechanical models of thermodynamics. The argument is based on the heat theorem and can be traced back to the second half of the nineteenth century with the works of Helmholtz and Boltzmann. Despite its simplicity, this argument has remained almost unknown. We present it in a modern, self-contained and accessible form. The approach constitutes an important link between classical mechanics and statistical mechanics.
I calculate the hydrodynamic limit of the BGK approximation of the Boltzmann equation for the case of a long stress relaxation time and find that the stress obeys a viscoelastic constitutive equation. The constitutive equation is different from standard constitutive equations used for polymeric liquids in that it is not ``objective'' because inertial effects are important. I calculate the exact solution for the stresses for simple shear flow and elongational flow.
The constant temperature derivation, which is a model-free derivation of the Boltzmann factor, is generalized in order to develop a new simple model-free derivation of a power-law Tsallis factor based on an environment with constant heat capacity. It is shown that the integral constant T_0 appeared in the new derivation is identified with the generalized temperature T_q in Tsallis thermostatistics. A constant heat capacity environment is proposed as a one-real-parameter extension of the Boltzmann reservoir, which is a model constant temperature environment developed by J.J. Prentis et al. [Am.…
Introducing the Boltzmann distribution very early in a statistical thermodynamics course (in the spirit of Feynmann) has many didactic advantages, in particular that of easily deriving the Gibbs entropy formula. In this note, a short derivation is proposed from the fundamental postulate of statistical mechanics and basics calculations accessible to undergraduate students.
Maxwell's velocity distribution is known to be universally valid across systems and phases. Here we present a new and general derivation that uses the central limit theorem (CLT) of the probability theory. This essentially uses the idea that repeated intermolecular collisions introduce randomness in the velocity change in the individual components of the velocity vector, leading to, by the CLT, a Gaussian distribution. To complete the derivation, we next show that the mean-square velocity or the standard deviation follows exactly from Boltzmann's formula relating entropy to the density of stat…
We present a simple quantum-mechanical derivation of correlation function of Langevin sources in the semiclassical Boltzmann--Langevin equation. The specific case of electron--phonon scattering is considered. It is shown that the assumption of weak scattering leads to the Poisson nature of the scattering fluxes.
We show that the Boltzmann factor has a geometrical origin. Its derivation follows from the microcanonical picture. The Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution or the wealth distribution in human society are some direct applications of this new interpretation.
A framework for relativistic thermodynamics and statistical physics is built by first exploiting the symmetries between energy and momentum in the derivation of the Boltzmann distribution, then using Einstein's energy-momentum relationship to derive a PDE for the partition function. It is shown that the extended Boltzmann distribution implies the existence of an inverse four-temperature, while the form of the partition function PDE implies the existence of a quantizable field theory of classical statistics, with hints of an associated gravity like gauge theory. An adaptation of the framework i…
Boltzmann's Principle S = k ln W was repeatedly criticized by Einstein since it lacked a proper dynamical foundation in view of the thermal motion of the particles, out of which a physical system consists. This suggests, in particular, that the statistical mechanics of a system in thermal equilibrium should be based on dynamics. As an example, a dynamical derivation of the density expansions of the two-particle distribution function, as well as of the thermodynamic properties of a moderately dense gas in thermal equilibrium, is outlined here. This is a different derivation than the usual one b…
The resolution of the Maxwell's demon paradox linked thermodynamics with information theory through information erasure principle. By considering a demon endowed with a Turing-machine consisting of a memory tape and a processor, we attempt to explore the link towards the foundations of statistical mechanics and to derive results therein in an "operational" manner. Here, we present a derivation of the Boltzmann distribution in equilibrium as an example, without hypothesizing the principle of maximum entropy. Further, since the model can be applied to non-equilibrium processes, in principle, we …
In this paper we propose a novel approach to construct macroscopic balance equations and constitutive equations describing various irreversible phenomena. It is based on the general principles of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and consists of four basic steps: picking suitable state variables, choosing a strictly concave entropy function, separating entropy fluxes and production rates properly, and determining a dissipation matrix. Our approach takes the advantage of both EIT and GENERIC formalisms, and shows a direct correspondence with Levermore's moment closure hierarchies for the Boltzmann…
In the paper the possible approaches to the rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann kinetic equation with hard sphere collisions from underlying dynamics are considered. In particular, a formalism for the description of the evolution of infinitely many hard spheres within the framework of marginal observables in the Boltzmann--Grad scaling limit is developed. Also we give consideration to one more approach of the description of the kinetic evolution of hard spheres in terms of a one-particle distribution function governed by the non-Markovian generalization of the Enskog equation and the Boltzman…
A derivation of the Boltzmann equation from the Liouville equation by the use of the Grad limiting procedure in a finite volume is proposed. We introduce two scales of space-time: macro- and microscale and use the BBGKY hierarchy and the functional formulation of classical mechanics. According to the functional approach to mechanics, a state of a system of particles is formed from the measurements, which are rational numbers. Hence, one can speak about the accuracy of the initial probability density function in the Liouville equation. We assume that the initial data for the microscopic density…
We study the Boltzmann transport equation for the Bose-Hubbard chain in the kinetic regime. The time-dependent Wigner function is matrix-valued with odd dimension due to integer spin. For nearest neighbor hopping only, there are infinitely many additional conservation laws and nonthermal stationary states. Adding longer range hopping amplitudes entails exclusively thermal equilibrium states. We provide a derivation of the Boltzmann equation based on the Hubbard hamiltonian, including general interactions beyond on-site, and illustrate the results by numerical simulations. In particular, conver…
Uniform shear flow is a paradigmatic example of a nonequilibrium fluid state exhibiting non-Newtonian behavior. It is characterized by uniform density and temperature and a linear velocity profile $U_x(y)=a y$, where $a$ is the constant shear rate. In the case of a rarefied gas, all the relevant physical information is represented by the one-particle velocity distribution function $f({\bf r},{\bf v})=f({\bf V})$, with ${\bf V}\equiv {\bf v}-{\bf U}({\bf r})$, which satisfies the standard nonlinear integro-differential Boltzmann equation. We have studied this state for a two-dimensional gas of …
We present a derivation of generalized Poisson-Boltzmann equations starting {from} classical theories of binary fluid mixtures, employing an approach based on the Legendre transform as recently applied to the case of local descriptions of the fluid free energy. Under specific symmetry assumptions, and in the linearized regime, the Poisson-Boltzmann equation reduces to a phenomenological equation introduced by (Bazant et al., 2011), whereby the structuring near the surface is determined by bulk coefficients.
A microscopic model is established for financial Brownian motion from the direct observation of the dynamics of high-frequency traders (HFTs) in a foreign exchange market. Furthermore, a theoretical framework parallel to molecular kinetic theory is developed for the systematic description of the financial market from microscopic dynamics of HFTs. We report first on a microscopic empirical law of traders' trend-following behavior by tracking the trajectories of all individuals, which quantifies the collective motion of HFTs but has not been captured in conventional order-book models. We next in…
We show that vertex corrections to the quasi-harmonic Green-Kubo theory of heat transport in insulators naturally lead to a generalisation of the expression for the conductivity that could be derived from the linearized Boltzmann equation, when the effects of the full scattering matrix are accounted for. Our results, which are obtained from the Mori-Zwanzig memory-function formalism, provide a fully ab initio derivation of the linearized Boltzmann transport equation and establish a connection between two recently proposed unified approaches to heat transport in insulating crystals and glasses.
It is shown that early suggested derivation of the Boltzmann kinetic equation for dilute hard sphere gas from the time-reversible BBGKY equations is incorrect since in fact a priori substitutes for them definite irreversible equations. Alternative approach to analysis of the hard sphere gas is formulated which conserves the reversibility and makes it clear that at any gas density one can reduce the BBGKY equations to the Boltzmann equation only in case of spatially uniform gas.
The late-time dynamics of quantum many-body systems is organized in distinct dynamical universality classes, characterized by their conservation laws and thus by their emergent hydrodynamic transport. Here, we study transport in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with different masses of the two fermionic species. To this end, we develop a quantum Boltzmann approach valid in the limit of weak interactions. We explore the crossover from ballistic to diffusive transport, whose timescale strongly depends on the mass ratio of the two species. For timescales accessible with matrix product operators,…
Ludwig Boltzmann had a hunch that irreversibility exhibited by a macroscopic system arises from the reversible dynamics of its microscopic constituents. He derived a nonlinear integro-differential equation - now called the Boltzmann equation - for the phase space density of the molecules of a dilute fluid. He showed that the Second law of thermodynamics emerges from Newton's equations of motion. However Boltzmann realized that stosszahlansatz, employed in the derivation, smuggles in an element of stochasticity into the transport equation. He then proposed a fully stochastic description of entr…
The interaction between charged bodies in an ionic solution is a general problem in colloid physics and becomes a central topic in the study of biological systems where the electrostatic interaction between proteins, nucleic acids, membranes is involved. This problem is often described starting from the simple one-dimensional model of two parallel charged plates. Several different approaches to this problem exist, focusing on different features. In many cases, an intuitive expression of the pressure exerted on the plates is proposed, which includes an electrostatic plus an osmotic contribution…
We study a mechanical system that was considered by Boltzmann in 1868 in the context of the derivation of the canonical and microcanonical ensembles. This system was introduced as an example of ergodic dynamics, which was central to Boltzmann's derivation. It consists of a single particle in two dimensions, which is subjected to a gravitational attraction to a fixed center. In addition, an infinite plane is fixed at some finite distance from the center, which acts as a hard wall on which the particle collides elastically. Finally, an extra centrifugal force is added. We will show that, in the …
In this paper, we analyze in a mathematically rigorous fashion the validity of the Boltzmann transport equation within quantum field theory. We work within the specific model of a hermitian, scalar field with polynomial self-interaction in two-dimensional Minkowski space. Our main results are as follows: Firstly, that one can obtain a non-perturbative, exact integro-differential equation for the number densities, which we called the pre-Boltzmann equation. We secondly take the long-time-dilute-medium limit of this equation, to obtain a simpler equation. This limiting equation is qualitatively …
The Stefan-Boltzmann (SB) law relates the emissivity $q$, given in $Wm^{-2}$, of an ideal black-body cavity at thermal equilibrium to the fourth power of the absolute temperature $T$ as $q=σT^4$, with $σ= 5.67 \times 10^{-8} \ W m^{-2} K^{-4}$ the SB constant, firstly estimated by Stefan to within $11$ per cent of the actual value. The law is a pillar of modern physics since its microscopic derivation implies the quantization of the energy related to the electromagnetic field. Somewhat astonishing, Boltzmann presented his derivation in 1878 making use only of electrodynamic and thermodynamic c…
We consider the microscopic solutions of the Boltzmann-Enskog equation discovered by Bogolyubov. The fact that the time-irreversible kinetic equation has time-reversible microscopic solutions is rather surprising. We analyze this paradox and show that the reversibility or irreversibility property of the Boltzmann-Enskog equation depends on the considered class of solutions. If the considered solutions have the form of sums of delta-functions, then the equation is reversible. If the considered solutions belong to the class of continuously differentiable functions, then the equation is irreversi…
A new form of the model collision operator for a Boltzmann gas of hard spheres and Coulomb plasma is derived. One-component and many-component systems are considered. The collision operator proposed takes properly into account the relaxation of the first 13 hydrodynamic moments. An expression for the intensity of the Langevin source in the model kinetic equation is obtained in the same approximation. A technique for reconstruction of the model collision integral based on a known expression for the model linearized operator is proposed. It is shown that, within our model, the collision integral…
Boltzmann's struggle with a derivation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics is sketched. So is his first derivation of the connection between entropy and probability in 1877. Planck's derivation and quantum mechanical modifications of Boltzmann's connection between entropy probability are given next. Then Einstein's objections to a purely probabilistic rather than a dynamical interpretation of entropy are discussed. Finally, the dynamical basis of the Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen distribution for very chaotic systems is sketched and appears to be an example of Einstein's dynamical interpretation of entro…
We derive generic relativistic hydrodynamical equations with dissipative effects from the underlying Boltzmann equation in a mechanical and systematic way on the basis of so called the renormalization-group (RG) method. A macroscopic frame vector is introduced to specify the frame on which the macroscopic dynamics is described. Our method is so mechanical with only few ansatz that our method give a microscopic foundation of the available hydrodynamical equations, and also can be applied to make a reduction of the kinetic equations other than the simple Boltzmann equation.
The origin of the Boltzmann factor is revisited. An alternative derivation from the microcanonical picture is given. The Maxwellian distribution in a mono-dimensional ideal gas is obtained by following this insight. Other possible applications, as for instance the obtaining of the wealth distribution in the human society, are suggested in the remarks.
In this work, we study the formal connections between the non-linear Fokker-Planck Equation associated with the non-additive entropy and the Boltzmann Equation with the non-additive correlation functional. The collisional term following the $q$-algebra is adopted. In the derivation of the non-additive Fokker-Planck Equation, two constraints are imposed on the final result: i) that the entropic index $q$ is a characteristic parameter of the non-additive systems with a value that does not change with time, and ii) that for $q \rightarrow 1$ a smooth transition for the standard Fokker-Planck Equa…
We report on a work in progress, whose goal is a systematic field theoretical derivation of the quantum transport equations for baryon production in the electroweak plasma at a first order phase transition in the limit of slowly varying background fields (thick wall limit). We start with the Schwinger-Dyson equations for the two point Green function written in the closed time contour (CTC) formalism. The quantum Boltzmann equations for the density matrix arise when the SD-equations are expanded to the first order in the gradients in the on-shell limit. In this paper we consider only scalar fie…
We show from first principles the emergence of classical Boltzmann equations from relativistic nonequilibrium quantum field theory as described by the Kadanoff-Baym equations. Our method applies to a generic quantum field, coupled to a collection of background fields and sources, in a homogeneous and isotropic spacetime. The analysis is based on analytical solutions to the full Kadanoff-Baym equations, using the WKB approximation. This is in contrast to previous derivations of kinetic equations that rely on similar physical assumptions, but obtain approximate equations of motion from a gradien…
