A Theorem on Ellipses, an Integrable System and a Theorem of Boltzmann

We study a mechanical system that was considered by Boltzmann in 1868 in the context of the derivation of the canonical and microcanonical ensembles. This system was introduced as an example of ergodic dynamics, which was central to Boltzmann's derivation. It consists of a single particle in two dimensions, which is subjected to a gravitational attraction to a fixed center. In addition, an infinite plane is fixed at some finite distance from the center, which acts as a hard wall on which the particle collides elastically. Finally, an extra centrifugal force is added. We will show that, in the absence of this extra centrifugal force, there are two independent integrals of motion. Therefore the extra centrifugal force is necessary for Boltzmann's claim of ergodicity to hold.

Nearly circular domains which are integrable close to the boundary are ellipses

Projective Dynamics and an Integrable Boltzmann Billiard Model

The aim of this note is to explain the integrability of an integrable Boltzmann billiard model, previously established by Gallavotti and Jauslin in arXiv:2008.01955, alternatively via the viewpoint of projective dynamics. The additional first integral is shown to be related to the energy of a corresponding system on a hemisphere. We show that this viewpoint applies to certain other billiard models in the plane defined through Kepler-Coulomb problems as well. The approach also leads to a family of integrable billiard models on the sphere defined through the spherical Kepler-Coulomb problem.

On the Local Birkhoff Conjecture for Convex Billiards

The classical Birkhoff conjecture claims that the boundary of a strictly convex integrable billiard table is necessarily an ellipse (or a circle as a special case). Genericity on curves and applications: pseudo-integrable billiards, Eaton lenses and gap distributions

In this paper we prove results on Birkhoff and Oseledets genericity along certain curves in the space of affine lattices and in moduli spaces of translation surfaces.
