We present a pedagogical introduction to the problem of evolving a head on collision of two Aichelburg-Sexl gravitational shock waves in D-dimensions, using perturbative techniques. We follow a constructive approach with examples, going in some detail through: the set up of the exact initial conditions and their properties; perturbative methods in flat space-time with Green function solutions; and numerical strategies to evaluate the integral solutions. We also discuss, briefly, radiation extraction methods adapted to this problem, together with some of the results for this system.

Asymmetric Collision of Two Shock Waves in AdS_5

We consider high energy collisions of two shock waves in AdS_5 as a model of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions in the boundary theory. We first calculate the graviton field produced in the collisions in the NLO and NNLO approximations, corresponding to three- and four-graviton exchanges with the shock waves. Universal hydrodynamic flow in holographic planar shock collisions

We study the collision of planar shock waves in AdS$_5$ as a function of shock profile. In the dual field theory the shock waves describe planar sheets of energy whose collision results in the formation of a plasma which behaves hydrodynamically at late times. We find that the post-collision stress tensor near the light cone exhibits transient non-universal behavior which depends on both the shock width and the precise functional form of the shock profile. Asymmetric shockwave collisions in $\text{AdS}_{5}$

Collisions of asymmetric planar shocks in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory are studied via their dual gravitational formulation in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. The post-collision hydrodynamic flow is found to be very well described by appropriate means of the results of symmetric shock collisions. Towards Collisions of Inhomogeneous Shockwaves in AdS

We perform a numerical simulation of the evolution of inhomogeneities with transverse profile in a collision of gravitational shockwaves in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. This constitutes a step closer towards an accurate holographic description of the thermalization of a strongly coupled plasma, which can model the dynamics of heavy ion collisions. The results indicate that the considered inhomogeneities typically become hydrodynamical earlier or at the same moment when hydrodynamics applies to the background, even though they decay slowly.

A Note on the Collision of Reissner-Nordström Gravitational Shock Waves in AdS

We study the collision of two Reissner-Nordström gravitational shock waves in AdS and show that the charge completely prevents the formation of marginally trapped surfaces of the Penrose type with topology S^(D-2), independently of the energy and the value of the impact parameter. In the case of head-on collisions, a numerical analysis shows that no trapped surfaces with topology S^1 \times S^(D-3) form either.

Holography and off-center collisions of localized shock waves

Using numerical holography, we study the collision, at non-zero impact parameter, of bounded, localized distributions of energy density chosen to mimic relativistic heavy ion collisions, in strongly coupled N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Shock wave collisions in AdS5: approximate numerical solutions

We numerically study the evolution of a boost-invariant N=4 SYM medium using AdS/CFT. We consider a toy model for the collision of gravitational shock waves, finding that the energy density first increases, reaches a maximum and then starts to decrease, matching hydrodynamics for late times. Collision of Shock Waves in Einstein-Maxwell Theory with a Cosmological Constant: A Special Solution

Post-collision space-times of the Cartesian product form M'xM'', where M' and M'' are two-dimensional manifolds, are known with M' and M'' having constant curvatures of equal and opposite sign (for the collision of electromagnetic shock waves) or of the same sign (for the collision of gravitational shock waves). We construct here a new explicit post-collision solution of the Einstein-Maxwell vacuum field equations with a cosmological constant for which M' has constant (nonzero) curvature and M'' has zero curvature.

Collision of Electromagnetic Shock Waves Coupled with Axion Waves: An Example

We present an exact solution that describes collision of electromagnetic shock waves coupled with axion plane waves. The axion has a rather special coupling to the cross polarization term of the metric. The initial data on the null surfaces is well-defined and collision results in a singularity free interaction region. Our solution is a generalization of the Bell-Szekeres solution in the presence of an axion field.
