We use holography to study sensitive dependence on initial conditions in strongly coupled field theories. Specifically, we mildly perturb a thermofield double state by adding a small number of quanta on one side. If these quanta are released a scrambling time in the past, they destroy the local two-sided correlations present in the unperturbed state. The corresponding bulk geometry is a two-sided AdS black hole, and the key effect is the blueshift of the early infalling quanta relative to the $t = 0$ slice, creating a shock wave. We comment on string- and Planck-scale corrections to this setup, and discuss points that may be relevant to the firewall controversy.
We study the butterfly effect of the AdS planar black holes in the framework of Einstein's general relativity. We find that the butterfly velocities can be expressed by a universal formula $v_{\rm B}^2 = TS/(2V_{\rm th} P)$. In doing so, we come upon a near-horizon geometrical formula for the thermodynamical volume $V_{\rm th}$. We verify the volume formula by examining a variety of AdS black holes. We also show that the volume formula implies that the conjectured reverse isoperimetric inequality follows straightforwardly from the null-energy condition, for static AdS black holes. The inequali…
We propose a connection between the butterfly velocity and the complexity growth rate in the context of thermodynamics of black holes where the cosmological constant is interpreted as thermodynamic pressure. According to the Smarr formula of black hole systems, there are different relations between butterfly velocity and complexity growth rate. The accuracy of this relationship has been checked for several models.
We show that there exists a class of charged BTZ-like black hole solutions in Lifshitz spacetime with a hyperscaling violating factor. The charged BTZ is characterized by a charge-dependent logarithmic term in the metric function. As concrete examples, we give five such charged BTZ-like black hole solutions and the standard charged BTZ metric can be regarded as a special instance of them. In order to check the recent proposed universal relations between diffusivity and the butterfly velocity, we first compute the diffusion constants of the standard charged BTZ black holes and then extend our c…
We apply the transformation of mixing azimuthal and internal coordinate or mixing time and internal coordinate to a stack of N black M-branes to find the Melvin spacetime of a stack of N black D-branes with magnetic or electric flux in string theory, after the Kaluza-Klein reduction. We slightly extend previous formulas to investigate the external magnetic and electric effects on the butterfly effect and holographic mutual information. It shows that the Melvin fields do not modify the scrambling time and will enhance the mutual information. In addition, we also T-dualize and twist a stack of N…
In this work we are about to investigate the effects of quintessence dark energy on evolution of the computational complexity relating to the AdS/CFT correspondence. We use $"complexity=action"$ conjecture for a charged AdS black hole surrounded by the dark energy at the quintessence regime. Then we try to find some conditions on the quintessence parameters where the Lloyd bound is satisfied in presence of affects of the quintessence dark energy on the complexity growth at the late time approximations. We compare late time approximation of the action growth by perturbed geometry in small limit…
In this note we remark that the butterfly effect can be used to diagnose the phase transition of superconductivity in a holographic framework. Specifically, we compute the butterfly velocity in a charged black hole background as well as anisotropic backgrounds with Q-lattice structure. In both cases we find its derivative to the temperature is discontinuous at critical points. We also propose that the butterfly velocity can signalize the occurrence of thermal phase transition in general holographic models.
We study the butterfly effect by considering shock wave solutions near the horizon of the AdS black brane in some of 3-dimensional Gravity models including; 3D Einstein Gravity, Minimal Massive 3D Gravity, New Massive Gravity, Generalized Massive Gravity, Born-Infeld 3D Gravity and New Bi-Gravity. We calculate the butterfly velocities of these models and also we consider the critical points and different limits in some of these models. By studying the butterfly effect in the Generalized Massive Gravity, we observe a correspondence between the butterfly velocities and right-left moving degrees …
We study charge diffusion in holographic scaling theories with a particle-hole symmetry. We show that these theories have a universal regime in which the diffusion constant is given by $D_c = C v_B^2/ (2 πT)$ where $v_B$ is the velocity of the butterfly effect. The constant of proportionality, $C$, depends only on the scaling exponents of the infra-red theory. Our results suggest an unexpected connection between transport at strong coupling and quantum chaos.
We study the mutual information between pairs of regions on the two asymptotic boundaries of maximally-extended anisotropic black-brane solutions. This quantity characterizes the local pattern of entanglement of thermofield double states which are dual to these geometries. We analyse the disruption of the mutual information in anisotropic shock wave geometries and show that the entanglement velocity plays an important role in this phenomenon. Besides that we compute several chaos-related properties of this system, like the entanglement velocity, the butterfly velocity and the scrambling time. …
When the Lyapunov exponent $λ_L$ in a quantum chaotic system saturates the bound $λ_L\leqslant 2πk_BT$, it is proposed that this system has a holographic dual described by a gravity theory. In particular, the butterfly effect as a prominent phenomenon of chaos can ubiquitously exist in a black hole system characterized by a shockwave solution near the horizon. In this paper we propose that the butterfly velocity can be used to diagnose quantum phase transition (QPT) in holographic theories. We provide evidences for this proposal with an anisotropic holographic model exhibiting metal-insulator …
In this paper, we study the holography of quasi-topological gravity in several aspects. We redo the calculation of shear viscosity on the boundary CFT with a new method which is associated with conserved Noether current and show that it has only one mode explicitly. Then we study the butterfly effect in AdS planar black hole and find it has two butterfly velocity modes because of the quasi-topological term. We obtain new black hole solution through introducing matter fields. We calculate the thermoelectric DC conductivity with momentum dissipation in quasi-topological gravity and find its resu…
We prove the equivalence of two holographic computations of the butterfly velocity in higher-derivative theories with Lagrangian built from arbitrary contractions of curvature tensors. The butterfly velocity characterizes the speed at which local perturbations grow in chaotic many-body systems and can be extracted from the out-of-time-order correlator. This leads to a holographic computation in which the butterfly velocity is determined from a localized shockwave on the horizon of a dual black hole. A second holographic computation uses entanglement wedge reconstruction to define a notion of o…
We study entanglement in thermofield double states of strongly coupled CFTs by analyzing two-sided Reissner-Nordstrom solutions in AdS. The central object of study is the mutual information between a pair of regions, one on each asymptotic boundary of the black hole. For large regions the mutual information is positive and for small ones it vanishes; we compute the critical length scale, which goes to infinity for extremal black holes, of the transition. We also generalize the butterfly effect of Shenker and Stanford to a wide class of charged black holes, showing that mutual information is di…
We explore the butterfly effect for black holes with rotation or charge. We perturb rotating BTZ and charged black holes in 2+1 dimensions by adding a small perturbation on one asymptotic region, described by a shock wave in the spacetime, and explore the effect of this shock wave on the length of geodesics through the wormhole and hence on correlation functions. We find the effect of the perturbation grows exponentially at a rate controlled by the temperature; dependence on the angular momentum or charge does not appear explicitly. We comment on issues affecting the extension to higher-dimens…
We study the robustness of quantum and classical information to perturbations implemented by local operator insertions. We do this by computing multipartite entanglement measures in the Hilbert space of local operators in the Heisenberg picture. The sensitivity to initial conditions that we explore is an illuminating manifestation of the butterfly effect in quantum many-body systems. We derive a "membrane theory" in Haar random unitary circuits to compute the mutual information, logarithmic negativity, and reflected entropy in the local operator state by mapping to a classical statistical mech…
Thermal states holographically dual to black holes in Einstein gravity display maximal Lyapunov growth as well as "butterfly effect cones". We study these effects in highly non-equilibrium states, obtained from an initial thermal state by the sudden injection of energy. We do this by computing out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) in BTZ-Vaidya spacetimes, which describe transitions between black holes at different temperatures. If both pairs of boundary operators appearing in the OTOC are inserted before the energy injection, we recover standard results, with butterfly effect cones displaying…
We recover the properties of a wide class of far from extremal charged black branes from the properties of near extremal black branes, generalizing the results of Danielsson, Guijosa and Kruczenski.
Applying squashing transformation to Kerr-Godel black hole solutions, we present a new type of a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole solution to the five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a Chern-Simon term. The new solutions generated via the squashing transformation have no closed timelike curve everywhere outside the black hole horizons. At the infinity, the metric asymptotically approaches a twisted S^1 bundle over a four-dimensional Minkowski space-time. One of the remarkable features is that the solution has two independent rotation parameters along an extra dimension associated with…
We have proposed the entropy formula of the black hole which is constructed by the intersecting D1-brane and D5-brane with no momentum, whose compactification radii are constrained by the surface gravities in ten-dimensions. We interpret the entropy of the black hole as the statistical entropy of the effective string living on the D5-brane. We further study the behavior of the absorption cross-section of the black hole using our entropy formula.
In present paper, we investigated the quantization of an electromagnetic field in the background of static spherically symmetric d-dimensional spacetime in the Boulware vacuum. We have also calculated the response rate of a static charge outside both d-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole and the GB black hole in the low-frequency regime, which can be expressed as the summation of hypergeometric functions.
We study thermodynamics of black holes in the deformed Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with coupling constant $λ$. For $λ=1$, the black hole behaves the Reissner-Norström black hole. Hence, this is different from the Schwarzschild black hole of Einstein gravity. A connection to the generalized uncertainty principle is explored to understand the Hořava-Lifshitz black holes.
In the spirit of Black Hole Complementary Principle, we have found the noncommutative membrane of Scharzchild Black Holes. In this paper we extend our results to Kerr Black Hole and see the same story. Also we make a conjecture that spacetimes is noncommutative on the stretched membrane of the more general Kerr-Newman Black Hole.
In a Randall-Sundrum theory (RS1) 3+1 dimensional black holes and higher dimensional black holes are not the natural continuations of each other. 3+1 dimensional black holes decay into a large number of 4+1 dimensional black holes at a critical mass, $M_{\rm crit}\sim 10^{32}$ TeV. Those black holes themselves may become unstable above another, albeit much smaller critical mass, $M_0\sim 10^3$TeV.
We review some of the most striking properties of the phase diagrams of higher dimensional black holes in pure gravity. We focus on static black hole solutions with Kaluza-Klein asymptotics and stationary black hole solutions in flat Minkowski space. Both cases exhibit a rich pattern of interconnected phases and merger points with topology changing transitions. In the first case, the phase diagram includes uniform and non-uniform black strings, localized black holes and sequences of Kaluza-Klein bubbles. In the latter case, it includes Myers-Perry black holes, black rings, black saturns and pi…
We study anti-de Sitter black holes in 2+1 dimensions in terms of Chern Simons gauge theory of the anti-de Sitter group coupled to a Source. Taking the source to be an anti-de Sitter state specified by its Casimir invariants, we show how all the relevant features of the black hole are accounted for. Enlarging the gauge symmetry to super AdS group, we obtain a supermultiplet of AdS black holes. We give explicit expressions for the masses and the angular momenta of the members of the multiplet.
We investigate the thermodynamics of Kerr-Newman-Kasuya black hole and the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole with a global monopole on inner and outer horizons. Products of surface gravities, surface temperatures, Komar energies, electromagnetic potentials, angular velocities, areas, entropies, horizon radii and the irreducible masses at the Cauchy and the event horizons are calculated. It is observed that the product of surface gravities, surface temperature product and product of Komar energies, electromagnetic potentials and angular velocities at horizons are not universal quantities for these…
We study charge and energy diffusion in simple holographic theories with broken translational symmetry. We find that when the effects of momentum relaxation are very strong the diffusion constants take universal values $D_{c} \sim D_{e} \sim \hbar v_B^2/(k_B T)$. Here $v_B$ is the velocity of the butterfly effect and the coefficients of proportionality depend only on the scaling exponents of the infra-red fixed point. Our results suggest that diffusion in these incoherent black holes is controlled by $τ\sim {\hbar}/(k_B T)$ independently of the mechanism of momentum relaxation.

We study phase transitions between black holes with scalar hair and topological black holes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. As the ground state solutions, we introduce the non-rotating BTZ black hole in three dimensions and topological black hole with hyperbolic horizon in four dimensions. For the temperature matching only, we show that the phase transition between black hole with scalar hair (Martinez-Troncoso-Zanelli black hole) and topological black hole is second-order by using differences between two free energies. However, we do not identify what order of the phase transitio…
We discuss the emergence of black hole shadow and photon-sphere in the context of $f(R)$ gravity. It is shown that the shadow is exponentially sensitive to linear instabilities of metric coming from some $f(R)$ solutions. Thus, the instabilities of photon circular trajectories, delimiting the black hole photon-sphere, are double exponentialized. Specifically we individuate two Lyapunov exponents, rather than only one, related to two different sources of chaos in geodesic orbits as a sort of butterfly effect. Such a result violates the black hole chaos bound proposed by Maldacena, Shenker and S…
We introduce a new microscopic quantity $\varepsilon $ that describes the contribution of a single black hole molecule to black hole entropy and give a key relation that this microscopic quantity is proportional to the macroscopic quantity -- entropy surface density $σ_{S}$, thus connecting a microscopic quantity to a macroscopic quantity of black holes. Such a connection provides a new probe for understanding the black hole microstructure from the macroscopic perspective. We also classify black holes in terms of entropy surface density. When its entropy surface density is larger (smaller) tha…
We argue that the gravitational shock wave computation used to extract the scrambling rate in strongly coupled quantum theories with a holographic dual is directly related to probing the system's hydrodynamic sound modes. The information recovered from the shock wave can be reconstructed in terms of purely diffusion-like, linearized gravitational waves at the horizon of a single-sided black hole with specific regularity-enforced imaginary values of frequency and momentum. In two-derivative bulk theories, this horizon "diffusion" can be related to late-time momentum diffusion via a simple relat…
We extend our recent discussion of four-dimensional black holes bound to a two-brane to include a negative cosmological constant on the brane. We find that for large masses, the solutions are precisely BTZ black holes on the brane, and BTZ `black strings' in the bulk. For smaller masses, there are localized black holes which look like BTZ with corrections that fall off exponentially. We compute when the maximum entropy configuration changes from the black string to the black hole. We also present exact solutions describing rotating black holes on two-branes which are either asymptotically flat…
In this paper we consider collision of two particle near the STU black hole and calculate center of mass energy. In the case of uncharged black hole we find that the maximum energy obtained near the black hole horizon which similarly happen for charged black hole. We verify that the black hole charge may be decreased or increased the center of mass energy near the black hole horizon.
An approach based on considerations of the non-classical energy momentum tensor outside the event horizon of a black hole provides additional physical insight into the nature of discrete quantum hair on black holes and its effect on black hole temperature. Our analysis both extends previous work based on the Euclidean action techniques, and corrects an omission in that work. We also raise several issues related to the effects of instantons on black hole thermodynamics and the relation between these effects and results in two dimensional quantum field theory.
We review exact solutions of black holes in higher dimensions, focusing on asymptotically flat black hole solutions and Kaluza-Klein type black hole solutions. We also summarize some properties which such black hole solutions reveal.
We extend the recently proposed Black Hole Entropy Distance Conjecture to the case of charged black holes in de Sitter space. By systematically studying distances in the space of black hole geometries with multiple horizons, we find that the distance is generically related to the logarithm of the entropy. From the infinite distance conjecture this predicts the appearance of a massless tower of modes in the limit of infinite entropy. Further, we study the evaporation of these black holes and relate it to the geometric distance. We find that the corresponding distance to the final stage of evapo…
We study some physical properties of black holes in Null Aether Theory (NAT)--a vector-tensor theory of gravity. We first review the black hole solutions in NAT and then derive the first law of black hole thermodynamics. The temperature of the black holes depends on both the mass and the NAT \textquotedblleft charge" of the black holes. The extreme cases where the temperature vanishes resemble the extreme Reissner-Nordström black holes. We also discuss the contribution of the NAT charge to the geodesics of massive and massless particles around the NAT black holes.
We make use of an internal symmetry of a truncation of the bosonic sector of the superstring and N=4 supergravity theories to write down an analogue of Robinson's identity for the black holes of this theory. This allows us to prove the uniqueness of a restricted class of black hole solutions. In particular, we can apply the methods of the preceding paper to prove the uniqueness of a class of accelerating black holes (the Stringy Ernst solution and Stringy C-metric) which incorporate the possibility of the black hole accelerating within an electromagnetic flux tube. These solutions and their as…
The thermodynamic geometry has been proved to be quite useful in understanding the microscopic structure of black holes. We investigate the phase structure, thermodynamic geometry and critical behavior of a Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole and a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in a cavity, which can reach equilibrium in a canonical ensemble. Although the phase structure and critical behavior of both cases show striking resemblance, we find that there exist significant differences between the thermodynamic geometry of these two cases. Our results imply that there may be a connection between the …
Since the Bekenstein's proposal that a black hole has equally spaced area spectrum, the quasinormal modes as the characteristic modes of a black hole have been used in obtaining the horizon area spectrum of the black hole. However, the area spectrum of the Kerr black hole in some previous works was inconsistent with the Bekenstein's proposal. In this paper, noting that black holes can have three types of resonance modes which are quasinormal modes (QNM), total transmission modes (TTM), and total reflection modes (TRM), we propose that all of these modes in highly damped regime should be used i…
The string-black hole correspondence is considered in the context of the correspondence principle proposed recently by Horowitz and Polchinski. We demonstrate that the entropy of string states and the entropy of a Schwarzschild black hole can be matched including the subleading terms which depend on mass logarithmically. We argue the necessity to include the string interaction (with coupling $g$) in the consideration and propose the $g^2$-dependent modification of the string entropy. The matching of it with the entropy of Schwarzschild black hole is analyzed.
We investigate scalarized charged black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar theory with two U(1) fields inspired by the $N=4$ supergravity. From the onset of the spontaneous scalarization (tachyonic instability of Reissner-Nordström black hole), these black holes are classified by the number of $n=0,1,2,\cdots$, where $n=0$ is called the fundamental black hole and $n=1,2,\cdots$ denote the $n$-excited black holes. Adopting radial perturbations, we show that the $n=0$ black hole is stable against the $s(l=0)$-mode scalar perturbation, whereas the $n=1,2$ excited black holes are unstable. This …
The main focus of this session was the presentation of new higher-dimensional black hole solutions, including black rings, black strings, and multi black holes, and the study of their properties. Besides new asymptotically flat and locally asymptotically flat black objects also new black holes with anti-de Sitter asymptotics were reported. The studies of their properties included the investigation of their stability, their thermodynamics, their analyticity and their existence. Furthermore, the geodesics in such higher-dimensional space-times were investigated.
