In the current work we have investigated the influence of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling on spin-current of a single layer gapped graphene. It was shown that the Rashba coupling has a considerable role in generation of the spin-current of vertical spins in mono-layer graphene. The behavior of the spin-current is determined by density of impurities. It was also shown that the spin-current of the system could increase by increasing the Rashba coupling strength and band-gap of the graphene and the sign of the spin-current could be controlled by the direction of the current-driving electric field.
We have studied spin-depend electron tunnelling through the Rashba barrier in a monolayer graphene lattice. The transfer matrix method, have been employed to obtain the spin dependent transport properties of the chiral particles. It is shown that graphene sheets in presence of Rashba spin-orbit barrier will act as an electron spin- inverter.
Manipulation of Rashba effects in two-dimensional (2D) electron systems is highly desirable for controllable applications in spintronics and optoelectronics. Here, by combining first-principles investigation and model analysis, we use uniaxial stress to control BiTeI monolayer as a Rashba 2D semiconductor for useful spin and transport properties. We find that the stress-driven electron system can be described by an effective anisotropic Rashba model including all the three Pauli matrixes, and uniaxial stress allows an out-of-plane spin component. When appropriate electron carriers are introduc…
In this study, the Optical conductivity of substitutionary doped graphene is investigated in presence of the Rashba spin orbit coupling (RSOC). Calculations have been performed within the coherent potential approximation (CPA) beyond the Dirac cone approximation. Results of the current study demonstrate that the optical conductivity is increased by increasing the RSOC strength. Meanwhile it was observed that the anisotropy of the band energy results in a considerable anisotropic optical conductivity (AOC) in monolayer graphene. The sign and magnitude of this anisotropic conductivity was shown …
We investigate the effect of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the optoelectronic properties of n- and p-type monolayer MoS2. The optical conductivity is calculated within the Kubo formalism. We find that the spin-flip transitions enabled by the Rashba SOC result in a wide absorption window in the optical spectrum. Furthermore, we evaluate the effects of the polarization direction of the radiation, temperature, carrier density, and the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit parameter on the optical conductivity. We find that the position, width, and shape of the absorption peak or absorption wind…
Search of novel two-dimensional giant Rashba semiconductors is a crucial step in the development of the forthcoming nano-spintronics technology. Using first-principle calculations, we study a stable two-dimensional crystal phase of BiSb having buckled honeycomb lattice geometry, which is yet unexplored. The phonon, room temperature molecular dynamics and elastic constant calculations verify the dynamical and mechanical stability of the monolayer at 0~K and at room temperature. The calculated electronic bandstructure reveals the direct bandgap semiconducting nature of BiSb monolayer with presen…
We study the Magnus transport in a gapped 2D electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling using semiclassical Boltzmann transport formalism. Apart from its signature in the charge transport coefficients, the inclusion of Magnus velocity in the spin current operator enables us to study Magnus spin transport in the system. In particular, we study the roles of mass gap and Fermi surface topology on the behavior of Magnus Hall and Nernst conductivities and their spin counterparts. We find that the Magnus spin Hall conductivity vanishes in the limit of zero gap, unlike the universal spin Hall condu…
We study the electronic band structure of monolayer graphene when Rashba spin-orbit coupling is present. We show that if the Rashba spin-orbit coupling is stronger than the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, the low energy bands undergo trigonal-warping deformation and that for energies smaller than the Lifshitz energy, the Fermi circle breaks up into separate parts. The effect is very similar to what happens in bilayer graphene at low energies. We discuss the possible experimental implications, such as threefold increase of the minimal conductivity for low electron densities, the wavenumber depen…
Using the Kubo formalism, the magnetic properties of the system in the linear regime have been investigated. Mainly the effect of non-magnetic substrate on the spin susceptibility is calculated. Results show that the Rashba coupling interaction has a central role in the magnetic response function of the system and it is really remarkable since this type of spin orbit coupling can be effectively controlled by an external gate voltage. Most importantly it was shown that, in the presence of the Rashba interaction a magnetic phase transition could be observed. This magnetic phase corresponds to a …
We study a gapped graphene monolayer in a combination of uniform magnetic field and strain-induced uniform pseudomagnetic field. The presence of two fields completely removes the valley degeneracy. The resulting density of states shows a complicated behaviour that can be tuned by adjusting the strength of the fields. We analyze how these features can be observed in the sublattice, valley and full density of states. The analytical expression for the valley DOS is derived.
We take a wide-angle view of the problem of monolayer graphene (MLG) where spin-degeneracy lifting is assumed to be possible by wedging in the tunable Rashba spin-orbit coupling(RSOC) and the sub-lattice staggered potential. We next consider the AB-stacked bi-layer graphene (BLG) system (the A-carbon of the upper sheet lying on top of the B-carbon of the lower one) and assume that a perpendicular electric field is created by the external gates deposited on the BLG surface. This system exhibits the occurrence of trigonal warping due to a (skew) interlayer hopping leading to the well-known Lifsh…
A new family of the low-buckled Dirac materials which includes silicene, germanene, etc. is expected to possess a more complicated sequence of Landau levels than in pristine graphene. Their energies depend, among other factors, on the strength of the intrinsic spin-orbit (SO) and Rashba SO couplings and can be tuned by an applied electric field $E_z$. We studied the influence of the intrinsic Rashba SO term on the energies of Landau levels using both analytical and numerical methods. The quantum magnetic oscillations of the density of states are also investigated. A specific feature of the osc…
In this work, we present numerical results for the second and third order conductivities of the plain graphene and gapped graphene monolayers associated with the second and third harmonic generation, the optical rectification and the optical Kerr effect. The frequencies considered here range from the microwave to the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum, the latter end of which had not yet been studied. These calculations are performed in the velocity gauge and directly address the components of the conductivity tensor. In the velocity gauge, the radiation field is represented by a power series…
We propose that the hybridization between two sets of Rashba bands can lead to an unconventional topology where the two Fermi circles from different bands own in-plane helical spin textures with the same chiralities, and possess group velocities with the same directions. Under the weak spin injection, the two Fermi circles both give the positive contributions to the spin-to-charge conversion and thus induce the giant inverse Rashba-Edelstein Effect with large conversion efficiency, which is very different from the conventional Rashba-Edelstein Effect. More importantly, through the first-princi…
The weak interlayer Van Der Waals material \{beta}-Bi2Pd has recently been established as a strong topological superconductor candidate with unconventional spin-triplet pairing and Majorana zero modes at vortices. In this letter, we study the topological characters and the superconducting pairing, which are still obscure in monolayer \{beta}-Bi2Pd, in light of our effective theoretical model. We find that the non-Rashba spin-orbital coupling plays a critical role in realizing and tuning various novel topological natures. In particular, the spin-triplet p-wave superconducting pairing with Major…
In this paper, spin properties of monolayer MX (M=Ga, In and X=S, Se, Te) in the presence of strain are studied. Density functional theory is used to investigate spin properties. The strain changes modification of bandgap due to spin-orbit coupling, the results indicate the spin-orbit coupling has a higher effect in the compressive regime. Also, spin splitting in the conduction and valence bands respect to strain are compared for six materials. The location of conduction band minimum (CBM) imposed a type of spin properties. These materials with mirror symmetry can display the Rashba effect whi…

We study analytically and numerically spin effects in MoS_2 monolayer armchair quantum wires and quantum dots. The interplay between intrinsic and Rashba spin orbit interactions induced by an electric field leads to helical modes, giving rise to spin filtering in time-reversal invariant systems. The Rashba spin orbit interaction can also be generated by spatially varying magnetic fields. In this case, the system can be in a helical regime with nearly perfect spin polarization. If such a quantum wire is brought into proximity to an s-wave superconductor, the system can be tuned into a topologic…
Achieving combination of spin and valley polarized states with topological insulating phase is pregnant to promote the fantastic integration of topological physics, spintronics and valleytronics. In this work, a spin-valley-coupled quantum spin Hall insulator (svc-QSHI) is predicted in Janus monolayer $\mathrm{CSb_{1.5}Bi_{1.5}}$ with dynamic, mechanical and thermal stabilities. The inequivalent valleys have opposite Berry curvature and spin moment, which can produce a spin-valley Hall effect. In the center of Brillouin zone, a Rashba-type spin splitting can be observed due to missing horizont…
Within an effective Dirac theory the low-energy dispersions of monolayer graphene in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and spin-degenerate bilayer graphene are described by formally identical expressions. We explore implications of this correspondence for transport by choosing chiral tunneling through pn and pnp junctions as a concrete example. A real-space Green's function formalism based on a tight-binding model is adopted to perform the ballistic transport calculations, which cover and confirm previous theoretical results based on the Dirac theory. Chiral tunneling in monolayer gra…
Despite its extremely weak intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC), graphene has been shown to acquire considerable SOC by proximity coupling with exfoliated transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Here we demonstrate strong induced Rashba SOC in graphene that is proximity coupled to a monolayer TMD film, MoS2 or WSe2, grown by chemical vapor deposition with drastically different Fermi level positions. Graphene/TMD heterostructures are fabricated with a pickup-transfer technique utilizing hexagonal boron nitride, which serves as a flat template to promote intimate contact and therefore a strong i…
The electronic and optoelectronic properties of two dimensional materials have been extensively explored in graphene and layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Spintronics in these two-dimensional materials could provide novel opportunities for future electronics, for example, efficient generation of spin current, which should enable the efficient manipulation of magnetic elements. So far, the quantitative determination of charge current induced spin current and spin-orbit torques (SOTs) on the magnetic layer adjacent to two-dimensional materials is still lacking. Here, we report a l…
On the basis of tight-binding lattice model, the edge states of monolayer and bilayer graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with different edge terminations are studied. The effects of edge-hopping modulation, spin-orbital coupling (SOC), and bias voltage on bilayer GNRs are discussed. We observe the following: (i) Some new extra edge states can be created by edge-hopping modulation for monolayer GNRs. (ii) Intralayer Rashba SOC plays a role in depressing the band energy gap $E_g$ opened by intrinsic SOC for both monolayer and bilayer GNRs. An almost linear dependent relation, i.e., $E_g\sim λ_R$, is fo…
Two-dimensional gapped semi-Dirac (GSD) materials are systems with a finite band gap that their charge carriers behave relativistically in one direction and Schrödinger-like in the other. In the present work, we show that besides the two well-known energy bands features (curvature and chirality), the band-gap parameter also play a crucial role in the index- and magnetic field-dependence of the Landau levels (LLs) in a GSD system. We take the monolayer phosphorene as a GSD representative example to explicitly provide physical insights into the role of this parameter in determining the index- an…
We present a proposal for an adiabatic quantum pump based on a graphene monolayer patterned by electrostatic gates and operated in the low-energy Dirac regime. The setup under investigation works in the presence of inhomogeneous spin-orbit interactions of intrinsic- and Rashba-type and allows to generate spin polarized coherent current. A local spin polarized current is induced by the pumping mechanism assisted by the spin-double refraction phenomenon.
Generation of quasi-particle--hole pairs in gapped graphene monolayers in the combined field of two counterpropagating light waves is studied. The process represents an analogue of electron-positron pair production from the QED vacuum by the Breit-Wheeler effect. We show, however, that the two-dimensional structure of graphene causes some striking differences between both scenarios. In particular, contrary to the QED case, it allows for non-zero pair production rates at the energy threshold when the Breit-Wheeler reaction proceeds nonlinearly with absorption of three photons.
A topological insulator (TI) interfaced with an s-wave superconductor has been predicted to host an unusual form of superconductivity known as topological superconductivity (TSC). Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has been the primary approach in the scalable synthesis of the TI/superconductor heterostructures. Although the growth of epitaxial TI films on s-wave superconductors has been achieved, it remains an outstanding challenge for synthesizing atomically thin TI/superconductor heterostructures, which are critical for engineering the TSC phase. Here, we used MBE to grow Bi2Se3 films with the co…
We argue that edge electrons in monolayer WTe$_2$ can possess a "cooperative" orbital moment (COM) that critically impacts its edge magnetoresistance behavior. Arising from the cooperative action of both Rashba and Ising spin orbit coupling, COM quickly achieves large magnitudes (of order few Bohr magnetons) even for relatively small spin-orbit coupling strengths. As we explain, such large COM magnitudes arise from an unconventional cooperative spin canting of edge spins when Rashba and Ising spin orbit coupling act together. Strikingly, COM can compete with spin moments to produce an unusual …
The electronic properties of a graphene monolayer in a magnetic and a strain-induced pseudo-magnetic field are studied in the presence of spin-orbit interactions (SOI) that are artificially enhanced, e.g., by suitable adatom deposition. For the homogeneous case, we provide analytical results for the Landau level eigenstates for arbitrary intrinsic and Rashba SOI, including also the Zeeman field. The edge states in a semi-infinite geometry are studied in the absence of the Rashba term. For a critical value of the magnetic field, we find a quantum phase transition separating two phases with spin…
Gate tunable two-dimensional (2D) superconductors offer significant advantages when studying superconducting phase transitions. Here, we address superconductivity in exfoliated 1T'-MoTe2 monolayers with an intrinsic band gap of ~7.3 meV using electrostatic doping. Despite large differences in the dispersion of the conduction and the valence bands, superconductivity can be achieved easily for both electrons and holes. The onset of superconductivity occurs near 7-8K for both charge carrier types. This temperature is much higher than in bulk samples. Also the in-plane upper critical field is stro…
We calculate the transmission coefficient for a particle crossing a potential barrier in monolayer graphene with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and in bilayer graphene. We show that in both the cases one can go from Klein tunneling regime, characterized by perfect normal transmission, to anti-Klein tunneling regime, with perfect normal reflection, by tuning the Rashba spin-orbit coupling for a monolayer or the interplane coupling for a bilayer graphene. We show that the intermediate regime is characterized by a non-monotonic behavior with oscillations and resonances in the normal transmission ampl…
We propose the lead sulphide (PbS) monolayer as a 2D semiconductor with a large Rashba-like spin-orbit effect controlled by the out-of-plane buckling. The buckled PbS conduction band is found to possess Rashba-like dispersion and spin texture at the $M$ and $Γ$ points, with large effective Rashba parameters of $λ\sim5~$eV$Å~$ and $λ\sim1~$eV$~Å$, respectively. Using a tight-binding formalism, we show that the Rashba effect originates from the very large spin-orbit interaction and the hopping term that mixes the in-plane and out-of-plane $p$ orbitals of Pb and S atoms. The latter, which depends…
We theoretically study electronic transport through a region with inhomogeneous Rashba spin-orbit (RSO) coupling placed between two normal regions in a monolayer graphene. The inhomogeneous RSO region is characterized by linearly varying RSO strength within its borders and constant RSO strength in the central region. We calculate the transmission properties within the transfer matrix approach. It is shown that the amplitude of conductance oscillations reduces and at the same time the magnitude of conductance increases with increasing border thickness. We also investigate how the Fano factor ca…
We investigate the unusual features of the quantum transport in gapped monolayer graphene, which is in a pseudospin symmetry-broken state with a net perpendicular pseudomagnetization. Using these pseudoferromagnets (PFs), we propose a perfect pseudospin valve effect that can be used for realizing pseudospintronics in monolayer graphene. The peculiarity of the associated effects of pseudo spin injection and pseudo spin accumulation are also studied. We further demonstrate the determining effect of the sublattice pseudospin degree of freedom on Andreev reflection and the associated proximity eff…
We study theoretically transport through a semiconducting nanowire (NW) in the presence of Rashba spin orbit interaction, uniform magnetic field, and spatially modulated magnetic field. The system is fully gapped, and the interplay between the spin orbit interaction and the magnetic fields leads to fractionally charged fermion (FF) bound states of Jackiw-Rebbi type at each end of the nanowire. We investigate the transport and noise behavior of a N/NW/N system, where the wire is contacted by two normal leads (N), and we look for possible signatures that could help in the experimental detection …
The wavefunction of massless Dirac fermions is a two-component spinor. In graphene, a one-atom-thick film showing two-dimensional Dirac-like electronic excitations, the two-component representation reflects the amplitude of the electron wavefunction on the A and B sublattices. This unique property provides unprecedented opportunities to image the two components of massless Dirac fermions spatially. Here we report atomic resolution imaging of the two-component Dirac-Landau levels in a gapped graphene monolayer by scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. A gap of about 20 meV, driven by …
When the inversion symmetry is broken at a surface, spin-orbit interaction gives rise to spin-dependent energy shifts - a phenomenon which is known as the spin Rashba effect. Recently, it has been recognized that an orbital counterpart of the spin Rashba effect - the orbital Rashba effect - can be realized at surfaces even without spin- orbit coupling. Here, we propose a mechanism for the orbital Rashba effect based on sp orbital hybridization, which ultimately leads to the electric polarization of surface states. As a proof of principle, we show from first principles that this effect leads to…
We study theoretically the minimal conductivity of monolayer graphene in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The Rashba spin-orbit interaction causes the low-energy bands to undergo trigonal-warping deformation and for energies smaller than the Lifshitz energy, the Fermi circle breaks up into parts, forming four separate Dirac cones. We calculate the minimal conductivity for an ideal strip of length $L$ and width $W$ within the Landauer--Büttiker formalism in a continuum and in a tight binding model. We show that the minimal conductivity depends on the relative orientation of the sampl…
We study the intra-valley spin-orbit mediated spin relaxation in monolayers of MoS2 within a two bands effective Hamiltonian. The intrinsic spin splitting of the valence band as well as a Rashba-like coupling due to the breaking of the out-of-plane inversion symmetry are considered. We show that, in the hole doped regime, the out-of-plane spin relaxation is not very efficient since the spin splitting of the valence band tends to stabilize the spin polarization in this direction. We obtain spin lifetimes larger than nanoseconds, in agreement with recent valley polarization experiments.
Inversion symmetry in bilayer graphene allows for layered opposite Rashba spin-orbit coupling (LO-RSOC) -- the situation when the RSOC has the same magnitude but the opposite sign in two coupled spatially separated layers. We show that the LO-RSOC results in the loss of spin chirality in the momentum space, in contrast to the common uniform RSOC. This chirality loss makes it difficult to experimentally establish whether the LO-RSOC (on the scale of 10 meV) exists, because the band structure is insensitive to it. To solve this problem, we propose to identify the LO-RSOC either by gating to brea…
In a vicinity of the Fermi surface, graphene layers with bandgaps allow for closely simulating the vacuum of quantum electrodynamics and, thus, its yet unverified strong-field phenomenology with accessible field strengths. This striking feature is exploited to investigate a plausible materialization of dynamically assisted pair production through the analog production of light but massive pairs of Dirac quasiparticles. The process is considered in a field configuration combining a weak high-frequency electric mode and a strong low-frequency electric field oscillating in time. Its theoretical s…
We formulate and solve the perhaps simplest two-body bound state problem for interacting Dirac fermions in two spatial dimensions. A two-body bound state is predicted for gapped graphene monolayers in the presence of weakly repulsive electron-electron interactions and a Coulomb impurity with charge $Ze>0$, where the most interesting case corresponds to $Z=1$. We introduce a variational Chandrasekhar-Dirac spinor wave function and show the existence of at least one bound state. This state leaves clear signatures accessible by scanning tunneling microscopy. One may thereby obtain direct informat…
We demonstrate theoretically that the interaction of electrons in gapped Dirac materials (gapped graphene and transition-metal dichalchogenide monolayers) with a strong off-resonant electromagnetic field (dressing field) substantially renormalizes the band gaps and the spin-orbit splitting. Moreover, the renormalized electronic parameters drastically depend on the field polarization. Namely, a linearly polarized dressing field always decreases the band gap (and, particularly, can turn the gap into zero), whereas a circularly polarized field breaks the equivalence of valleys in different points…
We consider a Josephson junction bilayer consisting of two tunnel-coupled two-dimensional electron gas layers with Rashba spin-orbit interaction, proximitized by a top and bottom $s$-wave superconductor with phase difference $ϕ$ close to $π$. We show that, in the presence of a finite weak in-plane Zeeman field, the bilayer can be driven into a second order topological superconducting phase, hosting two Majorana corner states (MCSs). If $ϕ=π$, in a rectangular geometry, these zero-energy bound states are located at two opposite corners determined by the direction of the Zeeman field. If the pha…
We take a wide-angle view of the problem of monolayer graphene where the valley-mixing and the spin-degeneracy lifting are assumed to be possible by wedging in the requisite ingredients, viz. the atomically sharp scatterers and the strong Rashba coupling dominating over the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. This leads to eight Majorana-like modes (quasi-particles which are self-conjugate) close to the experimentally inaccessible Dirac points. Using Kubo formula we also show that the semi-classical diffusive (longitudinal) conductivity is nearly (2.018 e2/h) at room temperature for the disordered …
