We theoretically investigate the optical properties of parity-time (PT)-symmetric three dimensional metamaterials composed of strongly-coupled planar plasmonic waveguides. By tuning the loss-gain balance, we show how the initially isotropic material becomes both asymmetric and unidirectional. The highly tunable optical dispersion of PT -symmetric metamaterials provides a foundation for designing an entirely new class of three-dimensional bulk synthetic media, with applications ranging from sub-diffraction-limited optical lenses to non-reciprocal nanophotonic devices.
Metal losses affect the performance of every plasmonic or metamaterial structure; dealing with them will determine the degree to which these structures will find practical applications.
A plasmonic "molecule" consisting of a radiative element coupled with a sub-radiant (dark) element is theoretically investigated. The plasmonic "molecule" shows close resemblance to the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an atomic system. Because of its sub-wavelength dimension, this EIT-like "molecule" can be used as building block to construct a "slow light" plasmonic metamaterial.
We develop an approach to utilize anisotropic metamaterials to solve one of the fundamental problems of modern plasmonics -- parasitic scattering of surface waves into free-space modes, opening the road to truly two-dimensional plasmonic optics. We illustrate the developed formalism on examples of plasmonic refractor and plasmonic crystal, and discuss limitations of the developed technique and its possible applications for sensing and imaging structures, high-performance mode couplers, optical cloaking structures, and dynamically reconfigurable electro-plasmonic circuits.
Plasmonics and metamaterials have attracted considerable attention over the past decade, owing to the revolutionary impacts that they bring to both the fundamental physics and practical applications in multiple disciplines. Although the two fields initially advanced along their individual trajectories in parallel, they started to interfere with each other when metamaterials reached the optical regime. The dynamic interplay between plasmonics and metamaterials has generated a number of innovative concepts and approaches, which are impossible with either area alone. This review presents the fund…
We demonstrate polarization controlled absorption in plasmonic bimetallic metamaterials. We fabricate and experimentally characterize Au/Ni ring resonator arrays, where by varying the wavelength and polarization of the incident wave, local electromagnetic fields and dissipation can be suppressed or enhanced in the Au and Ni areas of the rings.
We report that hybridizing semiconductor quantum dots with plasmonic metamaterial leads to a multi-fold intensity increase and narrowing of their photoluminescence spectrum. The luminescence enhancement is a clear manifestation of the cavity quantum electrodynamics Purcell effect that can be controlled by the metamaterial's design. This observation is an essential step towards understanding loss compensation in metamaterials with gain media and for developing metamaterial-enhanced gain media.
Strongly anisotropic media with hyperbolic dispersion can be used for claddings of plasmonic waveguides. In order to analyze the fundamental properties of such waveguides, we analytically study 1D waveguides arranged of a hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) in a HMM-Insulator-HMM (HIH) structure. We show that hyperbolic metamaterial claddings give flexibility in designing the properties of HIH waveguides. Our comparative study on 1D plasmonic waveguides reveals that HIH-type waveguides can have a higher performance than MIM or IMI waveguides.
The development of responsive metamaterials has enabled the realization of compact tunable photonic devices capable of manipulating the amplitude, polarization, wave vector, and frequency of light. Integration of semiconductors into the active regions of metallic resonators is a proven approach for creating nonlinear metamaterials through optoelectronic control of the semiconductor carrier density. Metal-free subwavelength resonant semiconductor structures offer an alternative approach to create dynamic metamaterials. We present InAs plasmonic disk arrays as a viable resonant metamaterial at t…
We propose a design for optical-frequency double-negative metamaterials (DMNs) in which the unit cell is formed by a single-layer plasmonic inclusion. By introducing some properly arranged stepwise modulations onto the inclusions, the effective permittivity and permeability of the material may become simultaneously negative due to the excitation of higher-order multipole plamonic (electrostatic) resonances. The approach opens a possibility to construct low-loss optical DNMs with great engineering simplicity.
A metamaterials-based approach to making a wide-angle absorber of infrared radiation is described. The technique is based on an anisotropic Perfectly Impedance Matched Negative Index Material (PIMNIM). It is shown analytically that a sub-wavelength in all three dimensions PIMNIM enables absorption of close to 100% for incidence angles up to $45°$ to the normal. A specific implementation of such frequency-tunable PIMNIM based on plasmonic metamaterials is presented. Applications to infrared imaging and coherent thermal sources are described.
Hyperbolic plasmonic metamaterials provide numerous opportunities for designing unusual linear and nonlinear optical properties. We show that the modal overlap of fundamental and second-harmonic light in an anisotropic plasmonic metamaterial slab results in the broadband enhancement of radiated second-harmonic intensity by up to 2 orders of magnitudes for TM- and TE-polarized fundamental light, compared to a smooth Au film under TM-polarised illumination. The results open up possibilities to design tuneable frequency-doubling metamaterial with the goal to overcome limitations associated with c…
Electromagnetic absorbers have drawn increasing attention in many areas. A series of plasmonic and metamaterial structures can work as efficient narrow band absorbers due to the excitation of plasmonic or photonic resonances, providing a great potential for applications in designing selective thermal emitters, bio-sensing, etc. In other applications such as solar energy harvesting and photonic detection, the bandwidth of light absorbers is required to be quite broad. Under such a background, a variety of mechanisms of broadband/multiband absorption have been proposed, such as mixing multiple r…
We derive general coupled-mode equations describing the nonlinear interaction of electromagnetic modes in media with loss and gain. Our approach is rigorously based on the Lorentz reciprocity theorem, and it can be applied to a broad range of metal-dielectric photonic structures, including plasmonic waveguides and metamaterials. We verify that our general results agree with the previous analysis of particular cases, and predict novel effects on self- and cross-phase modulation in multi-layer nonlinear fishnet metamaterials.
Noble metals that currently dominate the fields of plasmonics and metamaterials suffer from large ohmic losses. New plasmonic materials, such as doped oxides and nitrides, have smaller material loss, and, using them in place of metals carries promise of reduced-loss plasmonic and metamaterial structures, with sharper resonances and higher field concentration. This promise is put to a rigorous analytical test in this work which reveals that having low material loss is not sufficient to have a reduced modal loss in plasmonic structures. To reduce the modal loss it is absolutely necessary for the…
A tri-layer metamaterial perfect absorber of light, consisting of (Al/ZnS/Al) films with the top aluminium layer patterned as an array of circular disk nanoantennas, is investigated for resonantly enhancing Raman scattering from C-60 fullerene molecules deposited on the metamaterial. The metamaterial is designed to have resonant bands due to plasmonic and electromagnetic resonances at the Raman pump frequency (725 nm) as well as Stokes emission bands. The Raman scattering from C60 on the metamaterial with resonantly matched bands is measured to be enhanced by an order of magnitude more than fr…
By embedding four-rod resonators inside double-split ring resonators superlattice, a planar composite metamaterial possessing tripod plasmonic resonances is fabricated. Double Fano resonances are observed where a common subradiant driven oscillator is coupled with two superradiant oscillators. As a classical analogue of four-level tripod atomic system, the transmission spectrum of the composite metamaterial exhibits a double Fano-based coherent effect. Transfer of absorbed power between two superradiant oscillators is controlled by manipulating two coupling strengths conjugated through the pol…
We show that a metallic plate with fractal-shaped slits can be homogenitized as a plasmonic metamaterial with plasmon frequency dictated by the fractal geometry. Owing to the all-dimensional subwavelength nature of the fractal pattern, our system supports both transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic surface plasmons. As a result, this structure can be employed to focus light sources with all-dimensional subwavelength resolutions and enhanced field strengths. Microwave experiments reveal that the best achievable resolution is only, and simulations demonstrate that similar effects can be rea…
Despite more than a decade of active research, the fundamental problem of material loss remains a major obstacle in fulfilling the promise of the recently emerged fields of metamaterials and plasmonics to bring in revolutionary practical applications. In the present work, we demonstrate that the problem of strong material absorption that is inherent to plasmonic systems and metamaterials based on plasmonic components, can be addressed by utilizing the time dimension. By matching the pulse profile to the actual response of a lossy metamaterial, this approach allows to offset the effect of the m…
We consider a simple configuration for realizing one-dimensional slow-light metamaterials with large bandwidth-delay products using stub-shaped Fabry-Perot resonators as building blocks. Each metaatom gives rise to large group indices due to a classical analog of the dressed-state picture of electromagnetically-induced transparency. By connecting up to eight metaatoms, we find bandwidth-delay products over unity and group indices approaching 100. Our approach is quite general and can be applied to any type of Fabry-Perot resonators and tuned to different operating wavelengths.
We demonstrate resonant Faraday polarization rotation in plasmonic arrays of bimetallic nano-ring resonators consisting of Au and Ni sections. This metamaterial design allows to optimize the trade-off between the enhancement of magneto-optical effects and plasmonic dissipation. Although Ni sections correspond to as little as ~6% of the total surface of the metamaterial, the resulting magneto-optically induced polarization rotation is equal to that of a continuous film. Such bimetallic metamaterials can be used in compact magnetic sensors, active plasmonic components and integrated photonic cir…
We consider an array of the meta-atom consisting of two cut-wires and a split-ring resonator interacting with an electromagnetic field with two polarization components. We prove that such metamaterial system can be taken as a classical analogue of an atomic medium with a double- $Λ$-type four-level configuration coupled with four laser fields, exhibits an effect of plasmon induced transparency (PIT), and displays a similar behavior of atomic four-wave mixing (FWM). We demonstrate that when nonlinear varactors are mounted onto the gaps of the split-ring resonators the system can acquire giant s…
Photoelectric properties of metamaterials containing non-centrosymmetric, similarly oriented metallic nanoparticles embedded in a homogeneous semiconductor matrix are theoretically studied. Due to the asymmetric shape of the nanoparticle boundary, photoelectron emission acquires a preferred direction, resulting in a photocurrent flow in that direction when nanoparticles are uniformly illuminated by a homogeneous plane wave. This effect is a direct analogy of the photogalvanic (or bulk photovoltaic) effect known to exist in media with non-centrosymmetric crystal structure, such as doped lithium…
Optical manipulation has attracted remarkable interest owing to its versatile and non-invasive nature. However, conventional optical trapping remains inefficient for the nanoscopic world. The emergence of plasmonics in recent years has brought a revolutionary change in overcoming limitations due to diffraction and the requirements for high trapping laser powers. Among the near-field optical trapping cavity-based systems, Fano resonant optical tweezers have a robust trapping capability. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate sequential trapping of 20 nm particles through the use of metamat…
In this paper, we present the design of cylindrical and spherical electromagnetic cloaks working at visible frequencies. The cloak design is based on the employment of layered structures consisting of alternating plasmonic and non-plasmonic materials and exhibiting the collective behavior of an effective epsilon-near-zero material at optical frequencies. The design of a cylindrical cloak to hide cylindrical objects is firstly presented. Two alternative layouts are proposed and both magnetic and non-magnetic objects are considered. Then, the design of spherical cloaks is also presented. The ful…
From the demonstration of saturable absorption by Vavilow and Levshin in 1926, and with invention of the laser, unavailability of strongly nonlinear materials was a key obstacle for developing optical signal processing, in particular in transparent telecommunication networks. Today, most advanced photonic switching materials exploit gain dynamics and near-band and excitonic effects in semiconductors, nonlinearities in organic media with weakly-localized electrons and nonlinearities enhanced by hybridization with metamaterials. Here we report on a new type of artificial nonlinearity that is nan…
We present an analytical study to the structure-modulated plasmonic angular momentum trapped on periodic metal-dielectric nano-wedges in the core region of a sectorial indefinite metamaterial. Employing a transfer-matrix calculation and a conformal-mapping technique, our theory is capable of dealing with realistic configurations of arbitrary sector numbers and rounded wedge tips. We demonstrate that in the deep-subwavelength regime strong electric field carrying high azimuthal variation can exist within only ten-nanometer length scale close to the structural center, and is naturally bounded by…
All-optical active plasmonic devices are of fundamental importance for designing efficient nanophotonic circuits. We theoretically propose and numerically investigate an active plasmonic device made up of a nonlinear epsilon-near-zero metamaterial slab of thickness smaller than 100 nanometers lying on a linear epsilon-near-zero metamaterial substrate. We predict that, in free-space coupling configuration, the device, operating at low-intensity, would display plasmon mediated hysteresis behavior since the phase difference between the reflected and the incident optical waves turns out to be mult…
Designing broadband enhanced chirality is of strong interest to the emerging fields of chiral chemistry and sensing, or to control the spin orbital momentum of photons in recently introduced nanophotonic chiral quantum and classical optical applications. However, chiral light-matter interactions have an extremely weak nature, are difficult to be controlled and enhanced, and cannot be made tunable or broadband. In addition, planar ultrathin nanophotonic structures to achieve strong, broadband, and tunable chirality at the technologically important visible to ultraviolet spectrum still remain el…
Recent advances in nano-fabrication techniques allow for the manufacture of optical metamaterials, bringing their unique and extra-ordinary properties to the visible regime and beyond. However, an analytical description of optical nano-plasmonic metamaterials is challenging due to the characteristic optical behaviour of metals. Here we present an analytical theory that allows to bring established microwave metamaterials models to optical wavelengths. This method is implemented for nano-scaled plasmonic wire-mesh and tri-helical metamaterials, and we obtain an accurate prediction for their disp…
Metamaterials with artificial optical properties have attracted significant research interest. In particular, artificial magnetic resonances in non-unity permeability tensor at optical frequencies in metamaterials have been reported. However, only non-unity diagonal elements of the permeability tensor have been demonstrated to date. A gyromagnetic permeability tensor with non-zero off-diagonal elements has not been observed at the optical frequencies. Here we report the observation of gyromagnetic properties in the near-infrared wavelength range in a magneto-plasmonic metamaterial. The non-zer…
We investigate enhanced harmonic generation processes in gain-assisted, near-zero permittivity metamaterials composed of spherical plasmonic nanoshells. We report the presence of narrow-band features in transmission, reflection and absorption induced by the presence of an active material inside the core of the nanoshells. The damping-compensation mechanism used to achieve the near-zero effective permittivity condition also induces a significant increase in field localization and strength and, consequently, enhancement of linear absorption. When only metal nonlinearities are considered, second …
Axionic electrodynamics predicts many peculiar magnetoelectric-based properties. Hitherto, simple structures such as one-dimensional multilayers were employed to explore these axionic magnetoelectric responses, and Fabry-Pérot interference mechanism was frequently applied to augment these effects. In this Letter, we propose a new mechanism, metamaterial-enhanced axionic magnetoelectric response, by taking advantage of intense enhancement of localized electromagnetic fields associated with plasmonic resonances. Through numerical simulations, we show that plasmonic metamaterial can enhance axion…
We consider plasmonic nanoantennas immersed in active host medium. Specifically shaped metal nanoantennas can exhibit strong magnetic properties in the optical spectral range due to the excitation of Magnetic Plasmon Resonance (MPR). A case when a metamaterial comprising such nanoantennas can demonstrate both "left-handiness" and negative permeability in the optical range is considered. We show that high losses predicted for optical "left- handed" materials can be compensated in the gain medium. Gains required to achieve local generation in such magnetic active metamaterials are calculated for…
Plasmonics is a rapidly emerging platform for quantum state engineering with the potential for building ultra-compact and hybrid optoelectronic devices. Recent experiments have shown that despite the presence of decoherence and loss, photon statistics and entanglement can be preserved in single plasmonic systems. This preserving ability should carry over to plasmonic metamaterials, whose properties are the result of many individual plasmonic systems acting collectively, and can be used to engineer optical states of light. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of quantum state filtering…
A simple metamaterial-based wide-angle plasmonic absorber is introduced, fabricated, and experimentally characterized using angle-resolved infrared spectroscopy. The metamaterials are prepared by nano-imprint lithography, an attractive low-cost technology for making large-area samples. The matching of the metamaterial's impedance to that of vacuum is responsible for the observed spectrally selective "perfect" absorption of infrared light. The impedance is theoretically calculated in the single-resonance approximation, and the responsible resonance is identified as a short-range surface plasmon…
Optical activity is a fundamental phenomenon originating from the chiral nature of crystals and molecules. While intrinsic chiroptical responses of ordinary chiral materials to circularly polarized light are relatively weak, they can be enhanced by specially tailored nanostructures. Here, nanorod metamaterials, comprising a dense array of vertically aligned gold nanorods, is shown to provide significant enhancement of the circular dichroism response of an embedded material. A nanorod composite, acting as an artificial uniaxial crystal, is filled with chiral mercury sulfide nanocrystals embedde…
In this article, a 2D plasmonic waveguide loaded with all dielectric anisotropic metamaterial, consisting of alternative layers of Si-SiO2, has been theoretically proposed and numerically analyzed. Main characteristics of waveguide i.e. propagation constant, propagation length and normalized mode area have been calculated for different values of ridge width and height at telecommunication wavelength. The respective 1D structure of the waveguide has been analytically solved for the anisotropic ridge as a single uniaxial medium with dielectric tensor defined by Effective Medium Theory (EMT). The…
We propose, solve, and discuss a simple model for a metamaterial incorporating optical gain: A single bosonic resonance is coupled to a fermionic (inverted) two-level-system resonance via local-field interactions. For given steady-state inversion, this model can be solved analytically, revealing a rich variety of (Fano) absorption/gain lineshapes. We also give an analytic expression for the fixed inversion resulting from gain pinning under steady-state conditions. Furthermore, the dynamic response of the 'lasing SPASER', i.e., its relaxation oscillations, can be obtained by simple numerical ca…

We review the basic physics behind light interaction with plasmonic nanoparticles. The theoretical foundations of light scattering on one metallic particle (a plasmonic monomer) and two interacting particles (a plasmonic dimer) are systematically investigated. Expressions for effective particle susceptibility (polarizability) are derived, and applications of these results to plasmonic nanoantennas are outlined. In the long-wavelength limit, the effective macroscopic parameters of an array of plasmonic dimers are calculated. These parameters are attributable to an effective medium corresponding…
In this paper, we proposed a theoretical model in the far-infrared and terahertz (THz) bands, which is a dumbbell-shaped graphene metamaterial arrays with a combination of graphene nanorod and two semisphere-suspended heads. We report a detailed theoretical investigation on how to enhance localized electric field and the absorption in the dumbbell-shaped graphene metamaterial arrays. The simulation results show that by changing the geometrical parameters of the structure and the Fermi level of graphene, we can change the absorption characteristics. Furthermore, we have discovered that the reso…
We demonstrate analytically and numerically that the dispersive Dirac cone emulating an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) behavior is a universal property within a family of plasmonic crystals consisting of two-dimensional (2D) metals. Our starting point is a periodic array of 2D metallic sheets embedded in an inhomogeneous and anisotropic dielectric host that allows for propagation of transverse-magnetic (TM) polarized waves. By invoking a systematic bifurcation argument for arbitrary dielectric profiles in one spatial dimension, we show how TM Bloch waves experience an effective dielectric function th…
The key feature of a thermophotovoltaic (TPV) emitter is the enhancement of thermal emission corresponding to energies just above the bandgap of the absorbing photovoltaic cell and simultaneous suppression of thermal emission below the bandgap. We show here that a single layer plasmonic coating can perform this task with high efficiency. Our key design principle involves tuning the epsilon-near-zero frequency (plasma frequency) of the metal acting as a thermal emitter to the electronic bandgap of the semiconducting cell. This approach utilizes the change in reflectivity of a metal near its pla…
Here we discuss the theory and analyze in detail the guidance properties of linear arrays of metamaterial/plasmonic small particles as nano-scale optical nanotransmission lines, including the effect of material loss. Under the assumption of dipolar approximation for each particle, which is shown to be accurate in the geometry of interest here, we develop closed-form analytical expressions for the eigen-modal dispersion in such arrays. With the material loss included, the conditions for minimal absorption and maximum bandwidth are derived analytically by studying the properties of such dispersi…
In this article, we propose a programmable plasmonic waveguide system (PPWS) to achieve several different functions based on metal coding metamaterials (MCMs) and inverse design technology. There is no need to spend much time on considering the relation between the function and the structure because the MCMs in the PPWS are reprogrammable. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the PPWS, we utilize it to achieve several filtering functions, including bandstop and bandpass filters. The simulation results exhibit that the performance of filters is improved based on genetic algorithm, parti…
We propose a design for a plasmonic copper metamaterial with a negative index of refraction at visible/near-infrared wavelengths. Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate negative refraction by a copper metamaterial prism, and perform a parameter extraction technique to verify the sign of the effective, electric permittivity and magnetic permeability. Our proposed design has a figure of merit comparable to similar silver-based metamaterials operating in the visible/near-infrared range. These findings have implications for the design of low cost plasmonic devices and negative-index metamater…
We introduce a general implementation of the recently proposed homogenization theory [Tsukerman, J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 28, 577 (2011)] allowing one to retrieve all 36 linear constitutive parameters of any 3D metamaterial with parallelepipedal unit cells. The effective parameters are defined directly as linear relations between pairs of coarse-grained fields, in contrast with methods where these parameters are obtained from reflection/transmission data or other indirect considerations. The method is applied to plasmonic metamaterials with spherical gold particles and split-ring resonators (SRR), r…
Electromagnetic response of metallic rod dimers is theoretically calculated for arbitrary planar arrangement of rods in the dimer. It is shown that dimers without an in-plane symmetry axis exhibit elliptical dichroism and act as "atoms" in planar chiral metamaterials. Due to a very simple geometry of the rod dimer, such planar metamaterials are much easier in fabrication than conventional split-ring or gammadion-type structures, and lend themselves to a simple analytical treatment based on coupled dipole model. Dependencies of metamaterial's directional asymmetry on the dimer's geometry are es…
The gain-assisted plasmonic analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a metallic metamaterial is investigated for the purpose to enhance the sensing performance of the EIT-like plasmonic structure. The structure is composed of three bars in one unit, two of which are parallel to each other (dark quadrupolar element) but perpendicular to the third bar (bright dipolar element), The results show that, in addition to the high sensitivity to the refractive-index fluctuation of the surrounding medium, the figure of merit for such active EIT-like metamaterials can be greatly enhan…
The second harmonic generation is one of the most important applications of nonlinear effect, which has attracted great interests in nonlinear optics and microwave in the past decades. To the best of our knowledge, however, generating the second harmonics of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) has not been reported. Here, we propose to generate the second harmonics of spoof SPPs with high efficiency at microwave frequencies using subwavelength-scale nonlinear active device integrated on specially designed plasmonic waveguides, which are composed of two ultrathin corrugated metallic strips printe…
Whether dispersal of plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) within a perovskite active layer can increase the efficiency of solar cells is a long-standing question. It is well known that inclusion of metallic NPs in an active layer can boost the surrounding near-field intensity around them owing to the dipolar localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR, also called antenna effect), which can increase light absorption by solar cells. However, the use of plasmonic NPs in perovskite solar cells has been barely reported, and it is not known whether inserting plasmonic NPs into a perovskite active layer prod…
We observe unique absorption resonances in silver/silica multilayer-based epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials that are related to radiative bulk plasmon-polariton states of thin-films originally studied by Ferrell (1958) and Berreman (1963). In the local effective medium, metamaterial descrip- tion, the unique effect of the excitation of these microscopic modes is counterintuitive and captured within the complex propagation constant, not the effective dielectric permittivities. Theoretical anal- ysis of the band structure for our metamaterials shows the existence of multiple Ferrell-Berreman…
We suggest and theoretically study the local field enhancement in a metamaterial sample shaped as a pyramid and formed by plasmonic nanoplates alternating with dielectric ones in parallel to the pyramid base. Due to very small thickness of metal nanoplates and different transversal sizes of them the structure not only offers the efficient conversion of the light wave field impinging the pyramid base into hot spots near the pyramid apex, but also a large number of plasmonic resonances at which the field enhancement holds. These resonances cover the whole visible range.
We present an analytical description of the nonlocal optical response of plasmonic nanowire metamaterials that enable negative refraction, subwavelength light manipulation, and emission lifetime engineering. We show that dispersion of optical waves propagating in nanowire media results from coupling of transverse and longitudinal electromagnetic modes supported by the composite and derive the nonlocal effective medium approximation for this dispersion. We derive the profiles of electric field across the unit cell, and use these expressions to solve the long-standing problem of additional bound…
We present an analytical model describing complex dynamics of a hybrid nonlinear system consisting of interacting carbon nanotubes (CNT) and a plasmonic metamaterial. Our model is based on the set of coupled equations, which incorporates well-established density matrix formalism appropriate for quantum systems (CNT are described as a two level system) and harmonic-oscillator approach ideal for modelling sub-wavelength plasmonic and optical resonators. We show that the saturation nonlinearity of CNT increases multifold in the resonantly enhanced near field of a metamaterial. In the framework of…
Recent advancements in metamaterials and plasmonics have promised a number of exciting applications, in particular at terahertz and optical frequencies. Unfortunately, the noble metals used in these photonic structures are not particularly good conductors at high frequencies, resulting in significant dissipative loss. Here, we address the question of what is a good conductor for metamaterials and plasmonics. For resonant metamaterials, we develop a figure-of-merit for conductors that allows for a straightforward classification of conducting materials according to the resulting dissipative loss…
