We propose a design for a plasmonic copper metamaterial with a negative index of refraction at visible/near-infrared wavelengths. Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate negative refraction by a copper metamaterial prism, and perform a parameter extraction technique to verify the sign of the effective, electric permittivity and magnetic permeability. Our proposed design has a figure of merit comparable to similar silver-based metamaterials operating in the visible/near-infrared range. These findings have implications for the design of low cost plasmonic devices and negative-index metamaterials in the visible / near-infrared.
Photonic spin Hall effect in transmission is a transverse beam shift of the out-coming beam depending on polarization of the in-coming beam. The effect can be significantly enhanced by materials with high anisotropy. We report the first experimental demonstration of the photonic spin Hall effect in a multilayer hyperbolic metamaterial at visible wavelengths (wavelengths of 520 nm and 633 nm). The metamaterial is composed of alternating layers of gold and alumina with deeply-subwavelength thicknesses, exhibiting extremely large anisotropy. The angle resolved polarimetric measurements showed the…
In nanoscale photonic devices, the demand for multifunctionality from metasurface 2D optics increases rapidly. To explore fine-tuning in the design metric, we reinvestigated the trapezoid shape copper metasurface with Finite-Difference Time-Domain simulation for efficiently using linearly polarized light for two different functionalities. From the plasmonic band structure, we see how the degree of asymmetry in geometry affects the efficient resonance coupling of the traveling plasmonic modes, along with different types of mode hybridization profiles related to the nanoantenna's geometric shape…
Optical materials with vanishing dielectric permittivity, known as epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials, have been shown to possess enhanced nonlinear optical responses in their ENZ region. These strong nonlinear optical properties have been firmly established in homogeneous materials; however, it is as of yet unclear whether metamaterials with effective optical parameters can exhibit a similar enhancement. Here, we probe an optical ENZ metamaterial composed of a subwavelength periodic stack of alternating Ag and SiO$_2$ layers and measure a nonlinear refractive index $n_2 = (1.2 \pm 0.1) \times …
A metamaterial absorber converts solar radiation into heat for applications in thermoelectric generators and solar thermophotovoltaics. A metamaterial absorber typically consists of metallic parts separated by an insulator layer which does not allow the total heat extraction via direct heat conduction. Here, we propose wide-angle and broadband metamaterial absorber comprising an insulator layer, metal grating, and metal back plane (IMM) that allows the total heat extraction via direct heat conduction. We have formulated the quasi-analytical solution (QANS) of the IMM-absorber by applying the c…
The concept of metamaterials emerged in years 2000 with the achievement of artificial structures enabling non conventional propagation of electromagnetic waves, such as negative phase velocity of negative refraction. The electromagnetic response of metamaterials is generally based on the presence of optically-resonant elements (or meta-atoms) of sub-wavelength size and well designed morphology so as to provide the desired electric and magnetic optical properties. Top-down technologies based on lithography techniques have been intensively used to fabricate a variety of efficient electric and ma…
Graphene photonics has emerged as a promising platform for providing desirable optical functionality. However, graphene's monolayer-scale thickness fundamentally restricts the available light matter interaction, posing a critical design challenge for integrated devices, particularly in wavelength regimes where graphene plasmonics is untenable. While several plasmonic designs have been proposed to enhance graphene light interaction in these regimes, they suffer from substantial insertion loss due to metal absorption. Here we report a non-resonant metamaterial-based waveguide platform to overcom…
Active and analog tuning of the phase of light is needed to boost the switching performance of photonic devices. However, demonstrations of this type of tuning in the pivotal visible spectral region are still scarce. Herein we report active analog tuning of the phase of visible light reflected by a bismuth-based metamaterial, enabled by a reversible solid-liquid transition. This metamaterial, fabricated by a lithography-free approach, consists of two-dimensional assemblies of polydisperse plasmonic bismuth nanostructures embedded in a refractory and transparent aluminum oxide matrix. Analog tu…
We present a guide for the design and fabrication of a CMOS-compatible metamaterial microstructure as an absorber of visible light with exceptionally high absorption efficiency (~ 98%), for wavelengths 400nm-700nm. The structural parameters of the microstructure have been optimized by using Finite Element method (FEM) based COMSOL multyphysics software simulations. An optimized 2D unit cell of the structure consists of 4um by 160 nm TiN base on glass substrate covered with 70 nm thick silicon dioxide (SiO2). A periodic structure of titanium nitride (TiN) straps (each of 90 nm thick and 2-micro…
In the present paper, a half-wave plate (HWP) based on a birefringent metamaterial is numerically designed to operate in the visible range. The proposed structure consists of an array of double-pattern perpendicular rectangular aperture (RAA) engraved into opaque silver film deposited on a glass substrate. One of the apertures is glass filled. The operating principle of this plate is based on the excitation and the propagation of one guided mode inside each aperture but with different effective index. At the output side, a phase difference is obtained whose value mainly depends on the metal th…
Chalcogenide glasses are exceptional materials that show a wide contrast in optical properties upon phase change and are highly researched for reconfigurable electronic and nanophotonic devices. Here, we report the first proof-of-concept demonstration of a non-volatile, switchable hyperbolic metamaterial based on a chalcogenide glass. By using the $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}$ (GST) alloy as one of the components of a multilayered nanocomposite structure and exploiting its phase change property, we demonstrate a hyperbolic metamaterial in which the Type-I hyperbolic dispersion $(ε_{\perp} < 0, ε_{\para…
Realizing remarkable tunability in optical properties without sacrificing speed is critical to obtain all optical ultrafast devices. In this work, we investigate the ultrafast temporal behavior of optically tunable epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials, operating in the visible spectral range. To perform this the ultrafast dynamics of the hot electrons is acquired by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy and studied based on two-temperature model (2TM). We show that pumping with femtosecond pulses changes the effective permittivity of the metamaterial more than 400 %. This significant modulation…
Metamaterials have introduced a whole new world of unusual materials with functionalities that cannot be attained in naturally occurring material systems by mimicking and controlling the natural phenomena at subwavelength scales. However, the inherent absorption losses pose fundamental challenge to the most fascinating applications of metamaterials. Based on a novel plasmon injection (PI or Π) scheme, we propose a coherent optical amplification technique to compensate losses in metamaterials. Although the proof of concept device here operates under normal incidence only, our proposed scheme ca…
We propose a design for an universal absorber, characterized by a resonance frequency that can be tuned from visible to microwave frequencies independently of the choice of the metal and the dielectrics involved. An almost resonant perfect absorption up to 99.8 % is demonstrated at resonance for all polarization states of light and for a very wide angular aperture. These properties originate from a magnetic Fabry-Perot mode that is confined in a dielectric spacer of $λ/100$ thickness by a metamaterial layer and a mirror. An extraordinary large funneling through nano-slits explains how light ca…
The fabrication of functional metamaterials with extreme feature resolution finds a host of applications such as the broad area of surface/light interaction. Non-planar features of such structures can significantly enhance their performance and tunability, but their facile generation remains a challenge. Here, we show that carefully designed out-of-plane nanopillars made of metal-dielectric composites integrated in a metal-dielectric-nanocomposite configuration, can absorb broadband light very effectively. We further demonstrate that electrohydrodynamic printing in a rapid nanodripping mode, i…
Zero-index metamaterials (ZIMs) feature a uniform electromagnetic mode over a large area in arbitrary shapes, enabling many applications including high-transmission supercouplers with arbitrary shapes, direction-independent phase matching for nonlinear optics, and collective emission of many quantum emitters. However, most ZIMs reported till date are passive, with no method for the dynamic modulation of their electromagnetic properties. Here, we design and fabricate a magnetically tunable ZIM consisting of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) pillars sandwiched between two copper clad laminates in the mi…
Nanophotonic engineering of light-matter interaction at subwavelength scale allows thermal radiation that is fundamentally different from that of traditional thermal emitters and provides exciting opportunities for various thermal-photonic applications. We propose a new kind of integrated and electrically controlled thermal emitter that exploits layered metamaterials with lithography-free and dielectric/metallic nanolayers. We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that the proposed concept can create a strong photonic bandgap in the visible regime and allow small impedance mismatch…
Designing broadband enhanced chirality is of strong interest to the emerging fields of chiral chemistry and sensing, or to control the spin orbital momentum of photons in recently introduced nanophotonic chiral quantum and classical optical applications. However, chiral light-matter interactions have an extremely weak nature, are difficult to be controlled and enhanced, and cannot be made tunable or broadband. In addition, planar ultrathin nanophotonic structures to achieve strong, broadband, and tunable chirality at the technologically important visible to ultraviolet spectrum still remain el…
Hyperbolic Metamaterials, as a non-magnetic anisotropic artificial structure, show metal properties in one direction and dielectric behavior in orthogonal directions. The proposed hyperbolic metamaterial filter in this project is designed with the metal wire mesh perpendicular to the alternative layers of dielectric materials, keeps TM center wavelength unchanged for the different angle of incident light in MDIR regime. The geometric size of this nanostructure is smaller than the working wavelength and supports big wavevectors due to hyperbolic dispersion. In contrast with conventional Bragg s…
In this article, we report the growth of gold nanorods on glass substrates and copper nanoparticle thin films by cylindrical direct current magnetron sputtering (CDCMS) at room temperature. The grown gold nanorods have short lengths of < 20nm and show negative optical parameters in UV-Vis region. So far negative permittivity and permeability were only shown for complex artificial structures. In a case of simple structures like gold nanorods, the negative optical parameters were only predicted by simulation methods and considering ideal structures and they were not yet reported by experimental …
We employ both the effective medium approximation (EMA) and Bloch theory to compare the dispersion properties of semiconductor hyperbolic metamaterials (SHMs) at mid-infrared frequencies and metallic hyperbolic metamaterials (MHMs) at visible frequencies. This analysis reveals the conditions under which the EMA can be safely applied for both MHMs and SHMs. We find that the combination of precise nanoscale layering and the longer infrared operating wavelengths puts the SHMs well within the effective medium limit and, in contrast to MHMs, allows the attainment of very high photon momentum states…
Structural colors are a result of the scattering of certain frequencies of the incident light on micro- or nanoscale features in a material. This is a quite different phenomenon from that of colors produced by absorption of different frequencies of the visible spectrum by pigments or dyes, which is the most common way of coloring used in our daily life. However, structural colors are more robust and can be engineered to span most of the visible spectrum without changing the base material, only its internal structure. They are abundant in nature, with examples as colorful as beetle shells and b…
Silver is considered to be the king among plasmonic materials because it features low inelastic absorption in the visible and infrared (vis-IR) spectral regions compared to other metals. In contrast, copper is commonly regarded as being too lossy for plasmonic applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate vis-IR plasmons in long copper nanowires (NWs) with quality factors that exceed a value of 60, as determined by spatially resolved, high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements. We explain this counterintuitive result by the fact that plasmons in these metal wires…
Negative reflection and negative refraction are exotic phenomena that can be achieved by platforms such as double-negative metamaterial, hyperbolic metamaterial, and phase-discontinuity metasurface. Recently, natural biaxial van der Waals (vdW) materials, which support extremely anisotropic, low-loss, and highly confined polaritons from infrared to visible regime, are emerging as promising candidates for planar reflective and refractive optics. Here, we introduce three degrees of freedom, namely interface, crystal direction, and electric tunability to manipulate the reflection and refraction o…
We report on the optical and physical characterization of metallic nanowire (NW) metamaterials fabricated by electrodeposition of ~30 nm diameter gold nanowires in nano-porous anodic aluminum oxide. We observe a uniaxial anisotropic dielectric response for the NW metamaterials that displays both epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and epsilon-near-pole (ENP) resonances. We show that a fundamental difference in the behavior of NW-metamaterials from metal-dielectric multilayer (ML) metamaterials is the differing directions of the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and epsilon-near-pole (ENP) dielectric responses relat…
Increasing the refractive index available for optical and nanophotonic systems opens new vistas for design: for applications ranging from broadband metalenses to ultrathin photovoltaics to high-quality-factor resonators, higher index directly leads to better devices with greater functionality. Although standard transparent materials have been limited to refractive indices smaller than 3 in the visible, recent metamaterials designs have achieved refractive indices above 5, accompanied by high losses, and near the phase transition of a ferroelectric perovskite a broadband index above 26 has been…
